Oklahoma forward Blake Griffin congratulates Kansas center Cole Aldrich as they leave the court after the Jayhawks' 87-78 win.

No Griffin, no problem for Jayhawks
Kansas took sole possession of first place in the Big 12 by beating Oklahoma on Monday.
There’s no way Oklahoma power forward Blake Griffin could have played in Monday’s key conference clash against Kansas University.
Those who watched the game on ESPN saw the 6-foot-10 sophomore phenom rubbing his temples on the home team’s bench, agonizing from the after-effects of the concussion he sustained Saturday at Texas.
But for talk-around-the-water cooler’s-sake, what if college basketball’s leading player-of-the-year candidate had been on the court for, say, 30 to 40 minutes?
Here’s Daily Oklahoman columnist Jenni Carlson’s take:
“With Griffin, the Sooners beat the Jayhawks by double figures,” Carlson wrote for Monday’s newspaper and online edition. “He was in no shape to play against the Jayhawks. If he would’ve been, the Sooners would’ve dominated because Griffin would’ve dominated.
“The Sooner big man would’ve had his way with Cole Aldrich. Despite 15 points and 20 rebounds, the Jayhawk center was oddly underwhelming in a game where he faced a depleted frontline. He should’ve asserted himself Monday night, going to the goal and taking advantage of his prowess. Instead, Aldrich settled for jumpers and hooks.
“The two big fellows have known each other for several years, and they walked off the court together Monday night.
“‘I wish I would’ve had the opportunity to play against him tonight,’ Aldrich said. ‘He’s fantastic.’
“Griffin would’ve shown it against Aldrich. He would’ve eaten his lunch, his snack and his dinner, too.”
Certainly those paragraphs could be bulletin-board material for the Jayhawks if there’s an upcoming rematch in the Big 12 postseason tournament in Oklahoma City. As it stands now, suffice it to say KU fans will beg to differ with the OKC writer.
“It definitely would have been a different type game,” KU assistant coach Joe Dooley said on Tuesday’s Hawk Talk radio show. “The pace may have been slower in some regards. They’d probably have thrown it in more. As far as the outcome, I can’t tell you that. The game probably would have had a different feel.
“Cole ... he went and got it,” Dooley added of Aldrich pursuing the basketball. “With Blake not out there, there are a few more rebound opportunities. He was terrific as usual.”
Coach Bill Self agreed that Aldrich had a big impact.
“Cole gets 20. That is remarkable,” Self said. “Our second-leading rebounder gets three (Marcus Morris) and we outrebound them by five (38-33). Cole’s been unbelievable.
“We certainly hope to play them again. It’d mean we each won one or two games in the Big 12 tournament. It’s not often our guys get a chance to play against the player of the year and No. 1 NBA draft pick,” Self added.
Aldrich also hopes to play against his buddy.
“We talked a little bit before the week started. We were looking forward to facing each other. He’s off the charts good,” Aldrich said. “I look forward to playing against him in the future.”
• Instant classic?: It remains to be seen if Monday’s game will be deemed an ESPN “Instant Classic.” The Jayhawks at one point trailed by 14 points (22-8), then led by 20 (58-38) before seeing the lead dip to three.
“We talked about them coming out with energy and playing at a high level because Blake wasn’t playing,” Self said Tuesday, referring to the Sooners rallying around their fallen hero. “We weren’t good early. We got sped up and didn’t make shots on top of everything else.
“We didn’t guard like we’re capable. The light came on for whatever reason and defensively we were great from the 10-minute mark the first half until the 10-minute mark of the second. Unfortunately those other minutes they scored 60 points. They had 40 points the last 10 minutes in large part because fouls extended the game.
“Our guys showed a lot of character and poise. We were on the verge of putting ourselves in a hole we couldn’t get out of. To turn it on a dime like the kids did was pretty remarkable,” Self added.
• Stephenson update: Lance Stephenson, a 6-foot-5 guard from Lincoln High in Brooklyn, N.Y., who attended last Saturday’s KU-Nebraska game in Allen Fieldhouse, is planning on making trips to Wake Forest and UCLA, his dad told Rivals.com. Stephenson, however, said in an interview that appears on zagsblog.net he has eliminated USC and UCLA and is down to KU, St. John’s, Maryland and Wake.
His dad told Rivals his son will likely make his college choice known on April 15. Stephenson told zagsblog that he might announce his choice on March 21 if his team makes the PSAL title game in Madison Square Garden.
“The fans at Kansas are great,” Stephenson told Rivals.com. “I just love how they cheer the players and how they treat them. I was very surprised when people came up and knew who I was. Some of the people asked me for autographs. I enjoyed the game, too. It was a tough game, but Kansas pulled away late.”
• Johnson in Festival: KU signee Elijah Johnson tells Rivals.com he’ll play in the Kentucky Derby festival all-star game on April 11 at Freedom Hall in Louisville.
• Collins on list: KU’s Sherron Collins has been named a Naismith Trophy midseason candidate, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Tuesday. League members joining Collins include Texas guard A.J. Abrams and Oklahoma forward Blake Griffin. There are 30 candidates in all.

That is the same jenni carlson that got ripped by mike gundy during the "I am a man" rant. It is also worth noting that she is a ku graduate. I guess she knows where her bread is buttered by writing those words about Aldrich.

Someone want to explain to me how Stephenson could even think about Wake, St. John's and Maryland over KU? As far as tradition goes, it's not even close. You can't be in any better environment than Allen Fieldhouse.
Call me crazy, but if we don't get Stephenson, we WILL get John Wall. KU will get one last 5 star pickup. Self knows how to clamp down and bring the big boys in.

The Texas-OU game would be more logical as an ESPN Instant Classic game. Not that I don't relish the victory from Monday, but who would have thought that Texas would lose to Nebraska and a few games later beat OU with such a solid effort. At least Blake played some minutes in thier game, which would qualify it more of a Classic,
What ESPN should do, is to run the KU-Mizz. Columbia game first and then replay the upcoming matchup from this Sunday when we embarass them and send them running home to their mommies! The end of the game would be particularly note-worthy when our fans don't act like they've never had a home win and storm the court.

interesting article in the capitol journal today. it talks about how far this team has come since the games in Canada last summer. this team has matured a lot since then and is a legetimate contender for the big 12 championship. i think one of the espn announcers, during the oklahoma game said KU might even be considered for a 2 seed in the ncaa tournement. I don't know if i would go that far but one thing is for sure, when other teams see KU in their bracket they will take notice.

drgnslayr (anonymous) says…
Carlson's words are just that... words. Anyone can second-guess history and rewrite it to their liking.
Daily Kansan article:
In my rewrite of Monday's game, with Blake playing, I see the Jayhawks winning by 20. Blake can't handle the #1 defense in the conference, and suffers a frustrated game trying to figure out all the different defenses (and players) KU throws at him. Cole blocks 4 of his shots coming from weak side.
Because of Blake's bad game, and since when he plays the entire team softens up and let's it be "the Blake show" OU only scores 64 points on offense, many of those points coming late when facing the KU scrubs.
KU wins 84 - 64.
Carlson can stuff that in her pipe and smoke it!
Rewriting history only creates a fairytale and doesn't change the reality and will never turn an "L" into a "W." Dream on Carlson....
whitechocolate (anonymous) says…
Timmay-
Someone, and I can't remember who, recently did a stat sheet on colleges who produce the best NBA players. I believe Wake Forest was top of the pile with Tim Duncan and others. So while those other schools can't match KU tradition, players who are eyeing the next level might not always be sold on wins, but other factors that will aid their careers. Their are quite a few NBAers who played at smaller or even no-name programs. That said, Self and KU are going to give Lance the best college experience hands down.
As far as Carlson is concerned, it's the duty of a columnist to stir the pot and create conversation. Everyone in OKC knows her name after the Gundy incident and knows she's a KU grad. If she were to write anything favorable about KU's game she'd be hounded for alum bias. As it were, she did the complete opposite, which like Gary says is great board material.
There's also a nice response in her newest column today from a poster who compared OU's normal game states with Monday nights. The summary is this: even if the Sooners had Griffin, the adjusted numbers don't justify a victory, much less the kind of blowout Carlson was suggesting.

Let's give credit where credit is due. If any of you have seen Jenni lately, then you'd realize she knows a little something about eating lunches, snacks and dinners.
Lots and lots and lots of lunches, snacks and dinners.

We all knew these excuses would surface.
It is true OU did not have Blake, and he MAY have proved to be a difference maker.
If you have the chance to watch the game again please take note of what OU had to replace Blake. It was foul calls. Don't let the end of game stats mislead (those game extenders don't count). Talk about potential game changers. It's one thing the defend a top player, but how do you defend a whistle?
turdferguson (anonymous) says…
drgnslayr, you are dead on. This is basically a work of fiction.
The fact is KU beat the only team that they had the opportunity to play on Monday. It is hilarious that this type of blatant homerism was even printed.
This stuff is flat out laughable. Yeah, I'm sure OU would have gotten every point that they actually did, plus the easy 40 points that Griffin would have put up. This chick is living in a fantasy land. Her logic is even bad. Cole was "underwhelming" against a Griffinless team. So she's saying Cole didn't even take advantage of Griffin being out, and should have won the game handily (if not for a barrage of late 3's by a couple of unknowns).
Here are some other "facts" you may have heard about blake griffin:
-Blake Griffin is a two ton man-mountain who can palm a medicine ball!
-Blake Griffin rides to practice on a tornado?
-Blake Griffin once used a live rattle snake as a condom!
-His poop is considered currency in Argentina.
-He once punched a hole in a cow just to see who was coming up the road.
-He orchestrated the merger between UNICEF and Smith & Wesson.
-They say Gene Roddenberry got the idea for Star Trek by listening to Blake talk in his sleep.
-He's a ten foot tall beastman who showers in vodka and feeds his baby shrimp scampi.
-They use Blake's foreskin as a tarp when it rains at Yankee stadium.
-We once had a bachelor party for Blake. He ate the entire cake before we could tell him there was a stripper in it.
-Blake named the group Sha Na Na. They did not want to be called that.
-If you drop a phonograph needle on Blake's nipple, it plays the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.
-Did I ever tell you about the time he taught his son how to drive? He did it by entering him in the Indy 500. The kid wrecked and died. Blake said it would've happened sometime.
-He breastfeeds John Madden!
-He killed Wolfman Jack with a trident.
-All the Yes album covers are Griffin family photos.
-Blake's semen can form into a liquid human - like the guy from 'Terminator 2.
-Blake ranks 18th in the AP College Football Poll.
-He sweats Gatorade
-Blake Griffin is the father of every kid in Norman
-One time I was with Blake in the back of a pickup truck, along with a live deer. Blake goes up to the deer and says, 'I'm Blake Griffin! SAY IT!' Then he manipulates the deer's lips in such a way as to make it say, 'BlakeGriffin' ... It wasn't exactly like it, but it was pretty good for a deer!

Apparently she doesn't know a thing about what she is talking about. The game would have had a completely different feel to it. Can she seriously make this assessment without the game with Griffin actually being played? No one knows if Cole would have played even better against his buddy. I just don't think she really knows what she is talking about. I may be wrong but reading some of these statements it appears she just doesn't understand the game.m It would have been a completely different game. Would Griffin have dominated? Not likely.
There are numerous reasons why her statements are incorrect. One of them, Cole probably would have played a different game. In all honesty I think Cole would have took it to Griffin, I may be wrong but that's the sense I get from him. Competitor.

And the comments about Griffin eating lunches and dinners comes from pure blindness, bitterness, frustration and ignorance. When KU comes back to play OU the type of game that is played will most certainly be different. Self would have a much different game plan to be sure. That's another thing: Bill Self is one of the greatest college coaches in the game currently and is on pace to go down as one of the winning-est coaches in KU history. That's saying a lot. Those young players of his and the job that they've done thus far against all odds, losing all 5 starters, Aldrich had no meaningful part in beating Memphis - you've got to hopefully realize that Kansas under Self is going to be as dangerous against OU with Griffin as ever. Thanks to your inflammatory comments (KUSports.com by the way respects OU and Griffin and shows the class that you lack) you can bet KU will make you eat your words. You are quite the instigator! You are definately trying to make it in a man's world aren't you? You are completely disrespectful and don't understand the dynamics of the game and underestimate just how great of a coach Self is. You have no clue just how instrumental Cole was in Monday's game and KU's success the next time around will hopefully make you realize you were talking out of your ass ... thanks for giving Kansas ZERO credit for the job that they did at your place. As other people have commented over the past few days on here, part of the reason Cole didn't go for 20 points or anything like that is because he had virtually no touches for the last quarter of the game. If no one passes him the ball it's not really his fault if he isn't scoring.

Cole got his season average for points (15), 9 rebounds over his average (11) and 2 more blocks then his season average. How would you say that is underachieving? It's not like OU front line is terrible with out Blake Griffin. To expect Griffin to go for 40pts and 30rebs against the best post defensive player he has seen all year is ridiculous!
OU average margin of victory in Big 12 play is 8.3 points a game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KU average margin of victory in Big 12 play is 11.7 points a game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jenni why would they blow out ku if Griffin played?

I have no problem with a sports columnist being a homer and stirring the pot. I disagree with her "analysis," but I have no problem with her writing that column for that group of readers. Hell, most of the people who post on here are outraged when the LJW staff dares to pick someone other than the Hawks. Most people want their sports writers to be homers. I actually prefer a bit more objective analysis, but reading a homer is sometimes fun, too.
I really must agree, however, with those on here who called out all the sexist remarks. Bashing her simply because she's a "her" is utterly classless. Grow up.

Is she wrong? Probably. 20 points is a pretty big prediction.
Would it have been a completely different game? Yes
Would we have won? Who knows. Our chances would be less, although they would have hit many less threes, and would have had much less success with a full court press. In fact we probably wouldn't have seen it.
She's right on one thing -- he didn't play and we won.
What's nice is two things:
1. She's given our kids wood for the fire in case we run into them in the big12 tourney (or NCAA tourney for that matter).
2. Lastly, thanks to Griffin being out, our weakness was thoroughly exposed. Now the entire nation knows we can't handle full court pressure. Perfect timing with MU coming to town, as well as to get this major weakness fixed before the NCAA tourney.
If Griffin had played, as a coaching staff, the emphasis would not be on fixing this problem for six days.
So I say, Thank you for your article.
And get better soon Blake Griffin!

Fabio,
True. We would have been working on full court press anyway.
But thanks to Griffin being out we were exposed in a really embarrassing way. The 20 point lead we had with 9 minutes to go wouldn't have been there for us. They wouldn't have played full court pressure.
It takes a "hold on" win like this to really show a coach how poor we are at attacking a press. The Missouri game was one thing -- we didn't handle it well.
But for a 20 pt lead (which couldve easily turned into a 30 point victory) to get dwindled down to 3 (and nearly tied) in a five minute span...
That's poor. Let's face it -- that OU game cemented what all of us were nervous about during the KSU & MU games...
We haven't put much emphasis on attacking a press in practice this year.
Thanks to OU, we can rest assured Self is spending a ton of time working with the guys on this relatively simple lesson.
Desperation= Full Court Press (unless your guys haven't been taught "how" to thrash it)
OakvilleJHawk (anonymous) says…
Hints on beating the full court press:
1] Play good defense and don't let them score to set up.
2] Put your big man in the middle, pass to him to let him dish or get fouled.
3]Aggressively attack up the middle with pass off options on both sides.
4]Send someone deep.
5]Never pick up your dribble.
6]Let Morningstar inbound with Marcus screening for Taylor or Collins
7] Have Angelina Jolie stand up and flash the defense just before the inbounds pass.
Allright, allright ......I know #7 is ridiculous. I should have said Monica Belluchi!!!

If we learned anything from The Butterfly Effect, it's that even a minor change produces wildly unpredictable results. That, and Ashton Kutcher cannot act to save his life. Bottom line, no one knows what would have happened if BG had played. He played against us last year and got hurt, so that could have happened. He's had bad games, so that could have happened. So: it doesn't really matter what she might have written for the LJW.
And it doesn't really matter what Blake might have done.
All that matters is what KU will do to OU with Blake.
Blake could score a ton of points and be very dominant, the same way Durant and Beasley and other marquis players KU has faced have been.
But KU under Self often finds a way to beat opponents despite their greats going off.
This much is for sure: KU will play a very different kind of game against OU with Blake. And Blake will play a very different kind of game too.
OU in my opinion, remains the better team in terms of talent and maturity.
Self remains the better coach.
People who think that because the last game was close, adding Blake ensures an OU victory, don't understand Eddie Ball as coached by Bill.
OU will give KU different things with Blake and take away different things. It is quite possible that Blake can handle Cole. But Cole just keeps getting a little better all the time. He is getting farther and farther away from the player Jordan Miller and the MSU thugs handled. KU's team chemistry is getting more and more sorted as time goes on, whereas OU is just trying to maintain what they have.
On any given night...

Jaybate, glad to see you blogging again!
The whole rip on KU is funny. What I read is that Blake is the entire team and they run everything through him. What they don't understand is that KU will always spread the wealth. It is true that Collins is our go to guy, but even if he is out of it, we are still in it because multiple people score for us.

fabio, I always enjoy your posts about sports. I can't say the same about your Sarah Paaaylin comment. So she managed to pay all 5 government employees in Alaska? Incredible. Maybe we should give her the keys to the country.
But seriously, despite my screen name, I am not a liberal. I am pretty moderate and agree with both parties on different issues. I just think Sarah Palin is a joke, and I don't want her anywhere near Washington.
Back to sports, I can't believe the boys can win the Big XII by winning three extremely winnable games! I never saw this coming back when the season started. Let's finish strong and do better than Mizzou ever has in our "rebuilding year!"

I completly understand the issue of jc's writitng and the commentary, but seriously people who want to comment on her looks rather than her articles need to grow up! I love this university, but if this was a man writing this article no one would make a comment about his looks, only his writing abilities. Let's look and comment on the article not the person who wrote it. Show some respect, not only to a fellow sports lover but to a fellow alum(Even though she doesn't always have complete faith in our team!!) Rock chalk babies!!!!
