GameDay Cram Session: Baylor
KUSports.com online editor Jesse Newell & Journal-World sports editor Tom Keegan discuss what to expect from the Kansas men's basketball team's road game against Baylor.
6Sports Preview: Kansas at Baylor
6Sports' Kevin Romary takes a look at the 'Big Monday' matchup between the Jayhawks and Baylor.
Waco, Texas Power forward. That two-word combination seldom seemed accurate for a Kansas University basketball team that for much of this season desperately needed somebody, anybody, to give center Cole Aldrich a helping elbow.
Fatigued forward. Flinching forward. Even finesse forward, but not power forward.
That all changed Monday night inside Baylor University’s strangely not sold-out Ferrell Center, where three men defined the power forward position for Kansas in a mighty impressive 75-65 victory against the talented-but-reeling Bears.
Marcus Morris scored KU’s first eight second-half points, and when Aldrich went to the bench because of his fourth foul with 8:16 left in the game, Markieff Morris and Mario Little cleaned up underneath, doing all the dirty work in Aldrich’s absence.
The three players, close friends off of the court, combined for 34 points and 18 rebounds in 48 minutes.
“They played great,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “Markieff went after every ball like a man, and Mario made some key plays for us. He’s just got a natural feel. ... (Marcus) played great. He got off to a terrible start ... but he was able to change it. That’s a sign of guys growing up. I thought he and ’Kieff and Mario, they were all fabulous in the second half.”
If this team continues to improve and contends for a Big 12 title with a roster so inexperienced such a lofty goal didn’t seem realistic, then Big Monday’s 45-37 second half will be looked back upon as the moment it grew muscles.
Once Aldrich, playing with a somewhat cumbersome plastic mask to protect his broken nose, was whistled for his fourth foul, the Bears knew their opportunity had arrived to close the five-point deficit. Instead, KU went on a 10-5 run that was book-ended by buckets from Markieff Morris and Little. Sherron Collins, who played a phenomenal second half at both ends, took care of the other six points during the stretch.
“Any time you can get a team’s best interior player on the bench with four fouls, you always want to try to attack,” Baylor’s talented senior post player Kevin Rogers said. “Their interior players stepped up and made plays for them.”
Markieff Morris and Little were the ones who attacked. Self accurately predicted Little, who started the season sidelined by a leg injury, would toughen up the Jayhawks. It’s not a stretch to believe that the twins, seeing Little handle so well the expectations of such a demanding coach, followed his lead.
Nobody needed to grow up more than the Morris twins, who never had to work hard to earn playing time before coming to Kansas. They arrived out of shape, worked themselves into far better condition, and then had to learn the lesson that can escape freshmen: When you think you’re playing hard, play a whole lot harder.
It’s not fair to twins to group them together all the time, but Marcus and Markieff certainly don’t make it easy to avoid doing so. They tend to have their good and bad games together.
Marcus in the past two games: 36 minutes, 19 points, 13 rebounds. Markieff in the past two games: 31 minutes, 19 points, 13 rebounds.

Twins are slowly getting better in each game. Still get their shot blocked way to much, but are real board monsters and learning to play a little D!

I hope this is the beginning of having effective power forward play. We really needed it.

Tom, super and exactly right. The 'Hawks" needed this to happen. Finally, Cole is getting the support he really needs (especially now with his broken nose). Obviously, this needs to continue in every game. It should be emphasized that this was a genuine outstanding team and coaching effort. The power forwards stepped up and the guards continued their outstanding season play. The coaching staff needs a genuine thank you for the way the substitution rotation was handled. Great work, team. rock chalk and really looking forward to the OSU game. Hey, the NC squad from last year seemed to have a "little" trouble with OSU. Great potential, motivation for this year's squad.

Still would like to see more dunks out of the twins. Regardless, I love the rebounding effort from both of them.

The twins are beginning to play like Kansas Basketball players. This is a big step forward in their development. jpstrayer, you have to realize these two are young and have not had to assert themselves physically to score. Hours in the weightroom this spring and summer will translate into more power in their game. You have to learn to crawl before you walk and last night was proof that Bill is pushing them to in that direction. There will still be ups and downs with this group, but will Coach Self pushing them it will be more up than down!

Impressed with all 3 but am still waiting for the true breakout game for Mario. More than 25 minutes, more than 20 points and 10 rebounds. He has it in him. Seems he was more comfortable last night and was really elevating. While we are sweating out many games this conference season the team is going to get better and better. Looking forward to seeing it all play out.

Lets all remember that Baylor is one of the worst defensive teams in the Big 12. I'm not taking anything away from the Morris twins.....they had a phenominal game.....I would like to see them step up against the big boys.....Texas and OU. Also, lets see if they both can put together two great games in a row. I think more impressive than their scoring is their rebounding. KU needs someone to step up on the boards. Cole can't do it all by himself. As much as I see the twins improving, I sometimes feel that Tyshawn digresses. I wish he would be more aggressive and get that shot up more often. I know he's not a great outside shooter, but make a few, and they will start going in. Cudos to Brady Morningstar. The ONLY reason why he played those 40 minutes is defense. This kid is in great shape and never seems to get tired. He has grown on me more than any other Jayhawk this year. Fabulous game Brady. You kept those guards in check. Lastly, how many BIG shots has Tyrel Reed hit for this team. Just when a team is coming back, Tyrel puts an end to it. Terrific play on his part.

lonestar...just sayin'...that's all anyone sees on ESPN now days is dunks...one would think that an 18-19 kid would take advantage of any opportunity to dunk the ball. Yet Marcus and Markief, both seem to opt for a lay-up or a soft put back. Baylor's young players had not problem dunking on KU...Acy had two dunks on KU. Dunking has a beatiful advantage in that is really boost your FG%...again Acy is a prime example. I may be way off base with this, but still I would like to see a player with enough passion to attack the goal strong...rather than throw up soft lay-ups and baby hooks. Those latter shots have a far greater chance of missing than a dunk...of course Mario Little might disagree since he missed a dunk last night. That's just my opinion...that and $2 might buy you a small cup of coffee.

Little wasn't "really elevating" when he came up short on the dunk! But I agree with your comments that he is definitely seeing him get better and does have a big game in him. His explosiveness will come with time as the leg gets stronger, but I it definitely isn't all there yet for him.

I agree about Little. Its nice to so plainly see someone who knows what to do (and decisively!) when he gets the ball. Being able to create his own shot takes a great burden off of Sherron. He has the athleticism (at 90%...) to do what it takes to help the team in any given situation, and that's amazing & sorely needed.

ralsterI agree completely with your assessment of Little. I don't think he feels completely confident in his body yet. When he does, I think he will be a force to be reckoned with. He's another creative scorer. He can do a little of everything. We need him to give us 25-30 minutes in March.
