Markieff leads class

Barry Hinson, that guy wearing glasses who sits next to Jeremy Case on the baseline at Allen Fieldhouse, spoke to an alumni group recently and sprinkled the air with a dose of reality.

“One thing you really want to do is take freshmen, and you want to shove them into a microwave, and you want to speed the process up,” Hinson, the former Missouri State coach now working in external relations in the athletic department, told the alumni. “That’s one of the things you just can’t do in basketball. As much as you want to microwave maturation, it doesn’t happen.”

Freshmen progress and regress, progress and regress, progress and regress, and the best you can hope for is that the forward steps tend to be longer than the backward ones. The best you can hope for when three freshmen get significant minutes on the same team is that all three don’t regress on the same day.

Thanks to Markieff Morris, the 6-foot-9 freshman from Philadelphia, that wasn’t a problem Saturday in a scary, 66-61 survival act in Allen Fieldhouse against a Colorado team that will fight all season to stay out of the Big 12 basement.

It’s not that Morris didn’t have his freshman moments, such as when he gave up an easy bucket late in the shot clock and when he threw a bad pass under the basket, but overall he made more positive contributions than negative ones. Sure, he committed three fouls in 12 minutes, but not even a nuclear reactor, much less a microwave, is going to bring about quick change there.

He played with a sense of purpose, with an energetic step and love for the game that doesn’t always show itself. Morris contributed four offensive rebounds and 10 points, both career highs. His two-game totals: 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots in 19 minutes. That’s progress, which of course isn’t to stay that the days or regression are behind him.

Against Nebraska, his twin, Marcus, made a couple of mistakes, and was limited to seven minutes for his lack of effort. Markieff played seven minutes, the same total, though it was a productive seven minutes. When it was suggested he might have been paying for the sins of his brother, Markieff smiled.

“We’re always grouped together, no matter what,” Markieff said. “Coach tried not to group us together, but then he came back to grouping us together. ... It’s just like that. That’s how coach groups us.”

If the words seem critical in print, they didn’t come off that way when spoken. Kansas coach Bill Self had acknowledged in the past that he needed to do a better job of talking about them separately. Markieff said he has talked to Self about it.

“Sometimes I do, but then he always gets back to it,” he said. “He always gets off it a couple days, then he’s back on it. I just try to do what he tells me to do. Both of us try to have good days so he can always put us together in the same category.”

It’s human nature to tend to view identical twins as one, and in fact, the twins themselves tend to refer to themselves as “we” far more than “I.”

Marcus, by the way, also had four offensive rebounds and seven boards total to go with six points. Combined, they had 16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots in 32 minutes. That adds up to one very productive player.

Good article, Tom, on looking at the sum total productivity of the Morris twins. Part of the responsibility lies on their shoulders to distinguish themselves from one another. I hope they understand that point, and more than just applied to basketball.

There's no doubt the twins are getting better. I just hope everyone -- fans, coaches, and even themselves -- has patience as they progress. They will be significant contributors to this program.

I think this is very encouraging when they needed two the twins stepped up and got us a win yesterday. It's nice to see when others drop off we still have more players to step up.

They HAVE progressed this year. They startred ate and were way out of shape. They have plenty of ability. The question is will they work on their defense, more hustle and ht the weight room to get rid of the baby fat!l

At 17-4 on Feb 1, 2009 KU is well on it's way to 20 plus victories and a NCAA invitation. Tyshawn, and twins have logged significant time while Releford is starting to ramp up. The only question mark is Q.T. and even he is getting some PT.Collins and Cole have fulfilled our expectations while Reed and Morningstar have exceeded our goals. Little is proving he is every bit as good as advertised. I am afraid Appleton and Teahan have dropped by the wayside. Throw in the recruitment of Withey, Robinson and Johnson for next year and I think this will be an excellent transition season. We want to be National Champions every year. A lofty goal but unrealistic. However, every year can be a year of development in order to allow that NC shot every once in a while. 2010 could be a special season .Let's enjoy this one for what it is....reload!!!

Oakville-Agreed completely. No one, MOST especially a Jayhawk fan, wants to ever talk about lowered expectations. We win. That's who we are. That's what we do. But we definitely aren't pulling a Florida-style repeat. I won't say I'll be fine with losing a couple, because there hasn't been a loss in 15 years that didn't make me angry. However, as you said, 20+ wins and a tournament trip, and I'll be ok with that. Only at KU can that be considered "lowered expectations"!Rock those Bears tonight, Hawks!

Minor point - they are fraternal, not identical twins (they just happen to look identical!)

If you look at Jesse Newell's blog, he has a link to the latest ESPN bracketology, which has KU as a 4 seed. Although I think that's a little higher than KU deserves at this point, it still makes you think that maybe it's not impossible that KU could repeat. Obviously the odds are heavily against it, but I'm not willing to say yet that we "definitely aren't pulling a Florida-style repeat." With the talent on this team and the leadership of Sherron and Cole (not to mention Sherron's experience from last year), a repeat is certainly not out of the realm of possibility. In fact, imagine if Mario had been healthy all year; this team would likely be 19-2 and somewhere around the top 10. Would you say then that KU definitely wouldn't repeat? However you look at it, it's been a pretty remarkable season. How many teams in the country could lose their entire starting five and virtually all of their scoring and rebounding, then come back to start the next season 17-4 and 6-0 in the conference? It truly is a testament to the players and of course to Bill Self, Danny and the other coaches.

Good points actorman. Self has these guys playing pretty well considering the circumstances. Starting tonight we have all of our toughest league games left to play but to be 17-4 at this point is a pretty good accomplishment.Although getting a 4 seed in the NCAA is still quite a stretch, it looks like we are in a much better postion to at least get into the tournament than we were 3 or 4 weeks ago. A 4 seed is possible. If we continue to improve, the following would not be to unrealistic to hope forSeason 23-7Big 12 Tnmt 2-1NCAA 2-1 _____Total 27-9
