Kansas volleyball wins two

Jayhawks defeat Xavier, Murray St.

— Kansas University’s volleyball team defeated Xavier, 3-1, and Murray State, 3-0, on Saturday at the Middle Tennessee State University Invitational.

Karina Garlington had 13 kills, while Allison Mayfield and Paige Mazour each recorded 10 in KU’s 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 victory over MSU. Mazour also hit a team-high .500 attack percentage along with sophomore Lauren Hagan.

Hagan finished with a career-high seven kills in her first career start.

Defensively, Kansas had 46 digs, compared to MSU’s 33. Mayfield had a team-high 11 digs for her first career double-double.

KU was able to stay ahead of the Racers for most of set two, but MSU made it close. Ahead 21-18, Kansas strung together three straight points from a Garlington kill, a Melissa Manda service ace and a combined block by Nicole Tate and Mazour. Kansas put the set away shortly after with a solo block by Garlington, her second of the match.

In set three, the Jayhawks scored nine of the contest’s final 12 points to put the match away at 25-18.

Mazour had 14 kills, while Allison Mayfield had 11 and Brittany Williams seven in a 16-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 victory over Xavier.

KU improved to 2-1 on the season.

nice comeback pair of wins, after a disappointing first match loss.

We'll see how it goes....they open Big 12 play at Moo....always pretty tough.

Hot Damn! Another Jayhawk team heard from. The little bit I read/heard going into this tournament, I was hoping for maybe one win. Instead of that, (after first night jitters), we see decisive wins over two teams pundits had rated being better than KU.

Coach may have the squad to reach a few team goals this year -- top tier of conference, advance a few rounds in NCAA tourney. Bring it, ladies!
