KU volleyball tops alumni

The Kansas University volleyball team defeated the KU alumni in its first action of the 2009 season, 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-13), on Saturday night at Horejsi Center.

Junior Karina Garlington led KU with nine kills, followed by senior Brittany Williams, who contributed seven. The Jayhawks exhibited sharp defense, picking up 40 total digs. Junior libero Melissa Manda led with 10, while Nicole Tate and Allison Mayfield added seven apiece.

Tate notched 30 assists throughout the contest, while also adding two kills.

As a team, the Jayhawks tallied 37 kills, as opposed to 24 for the alumni. KU also dominated in blocks, leading the alumni 7-1.

“We had three main goals tonight,” KU coach Ray Bechard said. “We wanted to do well in hitting, serving and passing and I think we hit all three goals. I really like where we’re at as a team.”

Savannah Noyes, who graduated in 2008, led the alumni squad with six kills. Emily Brown added five kills and two service aces, while Abbie Jacobsen tallied five kills, two digs and one block.

Kansas officially kicks off its 2009 season with the Middle Tennessee State Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Jayhawks will take on MTSU, Xavier and Murray State.
