Drake drills KU softball, 7-1

Thursday was a forgettable day for Kansas University’s struggling softball team.

“We’ve had better days, that’s for sure,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said.

And few worse than the 7-1 loss to Drake at Arrocha Ballpark.

The Jayhawks didn’t field (three errors), didn’t hit (two safeties) and pitcher Val George was roughed up for nine hits, including four doubles and a home run.

In suffering its fourth loss in the last five games, Kansas looked listless, unfocused and mentally weary.

“It’s confidence,” Bunge said. “We’re a team playing without a lot of confidence. When you have multiple players struggling it’s tough.”

KU’s team batting average dipped to .233, by far the worst in the Big 12. Drake left-hander Brynne Dordel, who came in with an unglamorous 3.27 earned-run average, allowed only a single to Allie Clark in the second and Val Chapple’s leadoff home run in the sixth.

On the flip side, Rose Magaddino, Drake’s No. 9 hitter, came in with a .100 batting average and no extra base-hits, but slammed a two-run homer over the left field fence in the Bulldogs’ four-run second.

Kansas (17-27) was charged with three errors, but missed cutoffs and threw to the wrong base a couple of times. Drake (27-18) was charged with just one error.

“No one wants to play like we did today,” KU senior outfielder Dougie McCaulley said. “At this point in the season we’ve got to step up.”

Kansas will try to bounce back this weekend against Baylor, currently in third place in Big 12 standings. Games are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday at Arrocha Ballpark.

•Notes: Brittany Hile, who shares catching duties with Elle Pottorf, suffered a broken right wrist when hit by a pitch last weekend in Texas, but isn’t being listed as out for the season. “It’s a week-to-week thing,” Bunge said. … Chapple’s third homer of the season was the 17th of her career. … Seniors Chapple, George, Pottorf, McCaulley and Stevie Crisosto will all be honored in a brief ceremony following Sunday’s game.

Very disappointing performance. The team is slowly falling apart after being ranked early in the season.
