Henry UK visit April 25-26

Basketball recruits Xavier Henry and his brother, C.J., plan on visiting Kentucky the weekend of April 25-26, the players’ father, Carl Henry, told the Lexington Herald-Leader on Wednesday. The two players, who have been released from the Memphis letters-of-intent, also have KU and Memphis on their list. Carl Henry has told Memphis likely is not an option.

KEITHMILES05 11 years, 1 month ago

It'd be nice if you would print the ENTIRE Carl Henry comment. Why bother with tidbits?

When he was asked if UK should be considered the front runner, he replied yes. He also said something to the effect "kids change their minds."

Due tell Carl.

You should just not even be talking. Every other day you talk to the media and get them all whipped up.

Just stop.

Life will continue, we will be proud, and KU BB will be extraordinary, as always, with or without OAD's and their affect on the minds of the anxious. The Henry's know they will be appreciated and featured at Kansas in a national spotlight into April 2010 and beyond, whereas they will, at best, help launch the career of Calipari in another possible tenuous coaching tenure at Kentucky. Their opportunity, their choice. KU will still be great and given the opportunity, kick some serious Wilcat gluteus.

blackhawkjayhawk 11 years, 1 month ago

Let's see......the dad was a star player at KU.....the brother already committed to KU once.....KU wins the national championship in 08......Self wins national Coach of the Year in 09......a lottery pick player elects to return instead of go pro.......the starting point guard elects to stay.....and yet X still can't pull the trigger to be a Jayhawk?

Has anyone talked to Lance Stephenson recently?

Chicago_JHawk 11 years, 1 month ago

Haven't heard anything out of the Stephenson camp in several days. Self visited him on Friday and he visited SJU over the weekend, right? Reports are he's down to those two. Any word on when he may announce a decision?

Zags reports Memphis is now making a push for him, too. I can't see that developing into anything.

Michael Pannacciulli 11 years, 1 month ago

don't even mention X anymore until he decides to go to UK on the 27th. Lance will go play for Isaiah at Fire Isaiah University. It will be the new home for one and dones.

GabrielMichael 11 years, 1 month ago

It's obviously not my decision but I'd prefer Lance to X. Lance approached Coach Self so we know he wants to come to KU. KU has a good history with guards from NY/NJ. Xavier and his brother have both already passed on KU once... now as their supposed second choice they're still waffling. Please let them go to UK Coach Self. Sign Lance!

Dyrk Dugan 11 years, 1 month ago

the timing of this is curious. why next week? it's still 8 days a way....they already know about what's the infatuation with Calipari? cause that's what this is....a complete hypnotism by this coach.

cause when X committed, the main reason was his brother. to play alongside his brother...and he was at Memphis. Now they're both free to roam, and Dad has been quoted that if there were no other factor...just Xavier's decision...he'd come to Kansas. So what's changed? they're both free of what is the deal?

i'm still holding out hope that is just a courtesy visit. and this is the only weekend available. I like Lance, but with the choice, it's the X man all the way. We'll see what happens....but again, quite curious.

Chris Weaver 11 years, 1 month ago

let's not be too harsh on these guys and how their decision making process plays out. both brandon rush and julian wright made it to the hill with some pretty suspect thinking. the important thing is getting them here. both X and lance would be welcomed contributers to our 2010 national championship. we'd be pleased to be fans of either of them, and i will feel bad next year in march for the other when he gets bounced from the tourney and has to watch what might have been.

Timmay97 11 years, 1 month ago

This article is interesting only because of what Henry says toward the end. Apparantly, Henry got upset in the Mickey D's all star game because he wasn't getting the ball enough at the end of the game.

Anyone else getting annoyed about Henry and the obvious fact that he's being FORCED to go to college (because of the rules). I honestly think he has no clue what it would be like to play at Allen Fieldhouse against a team like Mizzou.

jayhawkinnc 11 years, 1 month ago

I'm tired of the X drama. Just pick a school already! I don't want him to come to KU if he's going to be like this. He's not coming to Lawrence. He turned us down once and I can totally see him turning us down again. He's just out for himself. I say we forget about X and quickly sign Lance. I would hate to whiff on both of them.

Jeffery Barrett 11 years, 1 month ago

They're not coming. CJ is in love with Cal and is convincing X to go wherever he goes.

HawkSC 11 years, 1 month ago

Lance Stephenson, come on down!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike Hamilton 11 years, 1 month ago

We are all excited with the media "frenzy" of the college decisions for these prime-time players but every year it seems to get worse and worse. I am going to announce this weekend, no wait, lets wait till next week or later. I know the media and fans add to this "madness" but it appears that these young men also love all the attention they are getting. Some people suggest we should give them a break as this is the biggest decision of these young men's lives but how big is it to decide where to go to college for one year for these OAD's? I am a big KU fan and I would love to get one of them but right now, I am not holding my breath for either.

jchawkfan 11 years, 1 month ago

Let me guess, CJ wants guaranteed playing time when he is eligible. When Self talked to CJ he probably told him that he would have a chance to compete for playing time just like he tells his 5 star recruits. Some other coach out there, (I don't think I need to name him) is promising playing time and who knows what else. Therefore IMOP CJ is the one driving the car to UK.

Another thing I thought was kind of funny. They had Coach Cal on espn PTI yesterday and they asked him if its fair that he is tring to take his recruits to UK with him. And Cal said something along the lines of, I really didn't even talk to any of them, then he switched the question around, and that he would never ask an exsisting player to follow him. Like Taggert ect. Never did address the Henry brothers.

prairie_dog 11 years, 1 month ago

Xavier--rhymes with "yippee-yo-ki-yay".

Not many players are a pain in the a** before they get here.

Brett Forreal 11 years, 1 month ago

X is not coming. Hopefully we can still land Lance. X and CJ are too much like Calipari. All about the fame, show, and $. Calipari has given CJ probably bunches of promises and who knows what else to land X. X needs to go there his heart is not a KU and it is evident that he doesn't care by now. X doesn't care about college, it is just a business deal to him.

avaholic 11 years, 1 month ago

Be careful what you wish for. I can see both X and Lance not coming here. To many of us are already claming the title next year when we really need one of these guys to sign with us. We need another scorer on the wing that can get to the basket and hit an open shot. Just let the process carry itself out.

We don't need daily updates about what these guys had for breakfast so we really don't need stories like this. The Henry's said that a decision would not come for awhile so let's leave it at that. Concentrate on the one you can get now.

6hawks 11 years, 1 month ago

Forget "X" and stop reporting on his every move. We need to "fill" the slot with Lance and "Make X's " decision for him. Make it EASY for X and sign LANCE!

WilburNether 11 years, 1 month ago

Bill, sign Stephenson, and let the Henrys go play with themselves. I'm tired of their act, and see no reason why they should be welcome here. Once upon a time, sure, but their conduct has been disgusting.

Sally Presson 11 years, 1 month ago

I'm sick of waiting on the "Henry's" to decide whether or not they are going to grace us with their presence. I know X is an outstanding player but it's obvious he really doesn't want to come to KU. We need to move on and go after Wall and Stephenson. Wall may be out he has a mile long list, but Stephenson has us on his short list. It's not like KU needs to baby these guys and beg them to come to the greatest school in the nation for goodness sake!!! Let's go get Lance and he'll be so glad he chose KU.

Rock Chalk!!!

TexasHawk44 11 years, 1 month ago

This shouldn't be a surprise. Initially I was hopeful that Henry wanted to come to KU but after the first 3-4 days, it became more and more clear that he has no intention of signing here. If he wanted to come to KU he would already be on the bus. CJ doesn't want to play for KU and that means that Xavier will not be a Jayhawk. They both signed with Cal at Memphis. I would be surprised if they don't want to play for him at a better program. I guess the Meeks situation might have some bearing but I just don't think the Henry boys really ever intended to come.

Hopefully Stephenson will still end up at KU. He is a helluva player and would be a great addition on the hardwood to our team. He can get to the basket and is very strong and tough. For me it is like seeing a young Sherron (only six inches taller and with a pull up J). He looks like he has that kind of ability to get to the rack. Only, unlike former Jayhawks like Kenny Gregory, he can shoot. But much like Gregory, he can finish STRONG!

Either way, I am looking forward to a great season. I don't know that Henry brothers and I wish them the best, but personally I am sick of this crap. Either you want to come here or you don't. They clearly don't. Let them play for Cal. CJ, who seems to be running the show, can ride the pine at UK just like he would have at KU -- if he even gets cleared to play. I hope UK sucks next year. Cannot stand greasy Johnny C. Kentucky should be careful what they wish for. He is the alter-ego of Rick Pitino. Pitino has class. Cal has none. They are getting the Wal-mart version of what they think they have, in my opinion.

Hopefully Lance knows that smart KU fans have always wanted him to be a Hawk. I hope he comes and can be a part of a magical season in 09-10!

cre017 11 years, 1 month ago

If X truly thought KU was the front runner he would have already signed. I'm so tired of the drama with these kids, especially the 1 and done kids! I wish the NBA would get rid of the rule that a kid essentially has to play a year of college ball. The NBA should either make it two years in College or get rid of the entry rules all together. Kids that commit to the NBA out of high school will either succeed or fall on their face. If enough kids see their peers fall then maybe, just maybe most will consider going to college to not only play ball but to graduate. Mr. Collins I'm very proud of you. I hope you consider taking a summer load and then just get it all done in the fall. I have a great deal of respect for what you are doing.

kufankam 11 years, 1 month ago

as mentioned before.... the story is simple. CJ wants to play. CJ is not guaranteed to play at KU but is fuaranteed that at UK. Xavier idolizes CJ. when asked what players (in NBA) he tries to emulate, X said, "my brother". X is guilty of one very, very minor thing... he has a misplaced infatuation for his brother. i would love to see X finally say, "CJ, i love ya, but i want to compete for a national championship", and come to KU.

by the way, it is getting old that people are posting advice for HCBS. if he thought like most of you did about X, he would have already just signed someone else. and who knows, maybe he has told X and Lance, "whoever wants it, it's yours" AND MAYBE THEY ARE BOTH WAITING. at this point, it is all speculation, yet everyone thinks that KU is waiting on X and holding Lance out. has anyone seen any FACTUAL evidence to support that is truly the case. by the way, zagsblog, rivals and/or scout are not always factual and even those sites have only contended that it is "thought" that KU is waiting on X before considering lance. or.... KU is waiting on lance because of the whole BornReady documentary. either one of these guys will be great next year. i trust that Self would not be going after them otherwise.

Brett Forreal 11 years, 1 month ago

X is scared that if he comes to KU, which he is not that is evident he will have to ride the bench for awhile. Self won't play you unless you are the best and earn it and maybe X is scared that he won't be the best for awhile and that will ruin his chances of going to the NBA in a year. X doesn't want to get shown up by the talent Self already has. College is just a bothersome bee to X. Go the fast path with Cal is much easier.

lahawkfan 11 years, 1 month ago

Bring on Lance. I am sick of this already. The Henry's aren't coming let's move on to some who DOES want to be here, "Born Ready". Besides I see Lance as a "potential" 2 year player as opposed to henry who is a for sure OAD!!!! Let's role the dice on Lance!

JayJayPG 11 years, 1 month ago

A lot of people seem to think that when X became available, we all of a sudden stopped recruiting Lance and put him on the back burner (and upset him in doing so) by going after Henry again. I can't imagine that we would shoot ourselves in the foot like that knowing full well that this would only upset him.

Like several others have said (and I am probably just repeating other speculation), I believe that Stephenson wants to come to KU, but doesn't want to compete for minutes with Xavier. I think he was ready to announce his intent to come to KU until Xavier became available. He probably assumed that Xavier would take another look at KU and Lance made the decision (himself) to hold out without any contact from KU. If Xavier/CJ do miraculously commit to KU, he will probably end up at St. John's. If not, he's dead set on becoming a Jayhawk. At this point, he is just waiting for Xavier to make a decision. With Cole/Sherron coming back, I can only imagine that Lance's desire to be a Jayhawk is even stronger now since he wants to win a championship (assuming this is true).

Steve Gantz 11 years, 1 month ago

I can't wait for November so we don't have to read "stories" about a kid visiting some college in Kentucky.

WRDK24 11 years, 1 month ago

Off the topic but has anyone else read this...

jchawkfan 11 years, 1 month ago

Has anyone seen the comment made on zagsblog in the newest article on Lance. Someone made the statement that they heard Lance was one campus yesterday and signed his letter to play. I would think if that was true it would have been mentioned on this site. So I don't know if I believe it 100%. Guess that is how rumors start. It would be awsome if it was true.

Sorry if someone mentioned this while I was writing this boss came in had to stop for awhile.

kansasjayhawks528807 11 years, 1 month ago

KU needs to forget about the henrys. they say one thing and do another. KU offers everything x says he wants but he still doesnt commit. he is leading KU fans on. he doesnt want to come here. he claims his family is so important to him but he still doesnt commit. if i were him i would be honored to have the opportunity to play where my parents played and bring back some memories of their careers. he claims he wants to make sure he makes the best decision for himself, which is great, but what are we talking about here? choosing between KU and any other school is a no brainer. KU has absolutely everything anybody could want. it doesnt matter where he plays, he will still be going to the nba next year. he doesnt really need any special training to get there. my point is if someone is offering you something and it is everything you want you accept it. why look further? what does he want? we need to tell him WE DO NOT WANT YOU. why let him make our decision? we want lance. lance doesnt shoot the 3 as good as x but he plays with much more determination and intensity. lance can get to the hole much better and create for others much better and he plays much harder on defense. get lance!

Jaminrawk 11 years, 1 month ago

It's fine. He can let his older brother decide for him and win nothing. Kinda like Blake Griffin. Yeah, individual awards aside, Griffin never achieved the "team" goals he wanted to. At least the kids that commit to places like KU and UNC want to win. People who commit to Calipari want to pad stats and miss free throws.

hawk_of_ages 11 years, 1 month ago

Have these boards been infiltrated by Kentucky fans? I sure hope the Henrys aren't scrolling down here and reading anonymous "KU fans" calling X a drama queen merely because he's going to visit Lexington.

Chill out, people.

100 11 years, 1 month ago

There are so many UK/ Mizzou/ Memphis posters on this site:

According to ESPN & FoxSports, we are THE frontrunners for X...

Have some patience KU fans -- don't start "believing something" just because a bunch of posters are saying something.

Again, I repeat -- KU is the frontrunner for X.

TexasHawk44 11 years, 1 month ago

Zagsblog and shiver and scout and a lot of places are not factual all of the time. Hmm...that is a shock. Just like a lot of the garbage that gets posted on sites like these by fans is not exactly factual.

I don't think anyone on here truly thinks that they are giving Bill Self advice. I doubt very much that Bill Self or any of these potential recruits give a rat's "azz" what any of us fans think about who should or should not wear a KU uniform. That is why they pay Self the 3 million-plus.

I do think, however, that this is a great way for fans to vent their frustrations, their hopes and dreams about the team that they love. It is the modern water cooler. And while I have called out folks on here for making stupid comments and starting ridiculous rumors (not to mention butchering the hell out of grammar and language), that is what is both fun and at the same ridiculous about posting on sites like this.

I for one am a displaced Jayhawk in the teeth of Longhorn and Aggie country, so this one of the few forums that I can go on to talk, dream, and bleed KU basketball. So, thanks to the Journal World for giving us this. While they don't always break the latest gossip or sometimes even real stories on KU (though they often do the latter), it is one place that I can go where I know the information is typically very accurate. Thanks for that.

TexasHawk44 11 years, 1 month ago

drgnslayr: i don't always agree with your posts, but I agree with this one. I would rather have Lance than Henry. I think Lawrence would be a breath of fresh air for the kid. NY kids are tough-minded and that is a GREAT thing to have on your team. X is a good kid and a great player but I really don't think he is coming to KU. I hope we sign Lance and move run the table on the Big 12 and win all the marbles in the big dance...

100 11 years, 1 month ago

He is being fair and giving the original Coach he signed with a chance.

That will be a very shallow bench next year at UK. Even SEC teams (gasp) will be able to run the starting five (consisting of several 18 year olds) ragged.

So again, KU faithful, let the kid take his visit and see what UK has to offer!

There is only one (one) place he is certified to win a championship next year and go off to the NBA in style like Rush, Chalmers, Jackson, Arthur (and via Russia Cleveland Cavs) Kaun.

That's why ESPN & FoxSports say X will go to KU.

Jaminrawk 11 years, 1 month ago

I just don't understand what the Henrys wouldn't like about:

1) Playing for a national championship winning coach in Bill Self 2) Playing at a school they grew up rooting for 3) Playing somewhere their family would love to see them go 4) Playing on a loaded squad primed for another title run 5) PLaying for a program itching for a talented swingman like Xavier 6) Playing for a program that will make them both better all around players than they could ever imagine. Look how many guys Self has sent to the NBA (including his Illinois recruits) in comparison to Calipari. Look how many are still there.

Don't believe the hype about Calipari boys, his moving to UK was a blessing in disguise and a second chance to make the right choice.

Joel Hood 11 years, 1 month ago

I’m not sure I understand why so many posters are reacting with such shock and anger. The Henry’s have said all along that they are reopening their recruitment. We all seem to get really caught up in the world of rumors that drive message boards such as this. It just shows how passionate we are for our Hawks. There is no better coach or program in the country than what we have at KU. I’m anxious to see how this all plays out, but I feel pretty good that HCBS has a much greater handle on the recruiting health of KU than any of us do.

Steve Brown 11 years, 1 month ago

I trust HCBS and if we don't sign anyone else we are going to be pretty darn good. Add a year experience on to what we have coming back, oh my!!

Take the names off of it and if we have room for another player, then I would rather have a left over Gillispie recruit for 4 yrs than a OAD Cal recruit as his recent studs, albeit great individual players, can't hit free throws and won't play defense..

Orton anyone?

hawk_of_ages 11 years, 1 month ago

That's some quality trolling, there, Maxhawk. Really, who needs evidence, reasoning or nuance when you can just spout ill-informed, anonymous insults at 18-year-old kids?

jahawkdave 11 years, 1 month ago

I would love to know what is really going on behind the scenes with all these decisions and recruiting, it would make a great reality show.

I think X will go with Cal once again, I'm not that hyped about Lance (go ahead and call me an idiot Tex44), I do trust Self, so if he wants Lance fine by me.

My speculation is that Lance was hoping for some playing time guarantees at KU but was getting the opp. to compete from Self, I can't see Lance not taking an offer at KU just to wait and see if X might take it, and I can't see Self telling Lance to wait, while he tries to sign x, nor do I see Lance willing to wait to be second choice. Who knows how all this is going down... Makes for good fodder though.

My prediction is Releford will greatly improve and be our starting 3 man.

Blake Post 11 years, 1 month ago

90% of you are "sick of this"? ya sound like a bunch of girls. We waited on King Arthur and it paid off. We picked up Rush late. Henry is a legacy. After KUs national championship a year ago, you should not be sick of anything unless it is unemployment, pirates, etc. Get a freakin' clue and stop yapping. The sons of Carl Henry, a great KU player, are welcome here if they want to come. As stated by some of you, I think there are a bunch of tiger lilies posting here, so discount all of the negatives. I suppose if other players such as Wilt, Clyde, Danny, Raef, Pierce, Jo Jo, Darnell, etc. etc. had sons who were trying to decide, we would just bash them?
The KU team talks about it like it is a family, so until a son of our basketball family decides to go somewhere else, I should think we treat him like our own... and even if one goes elsewhere, there is still that little matter a bunch of you have forgotten or never learned: KU people used to pride themselves on behaving with class. Do we still? Prove it.... except when dealing with mizzoo, of course. :D

100 11 years, 1 month ago

Top 10 Reasons X & CJ will come to KU:

  1. Paved roads!
  2. A campus that doesn't look like a trailer park
  3. Toilets that flush!
  4. Ladies that speak fluent English
  5. Health care!
  6. Professors that require students to wake up before class
  7. A basketball complex that is owned by the University
  8. One word -- Naismith
  9. Two words -- Danny Manning
  10. Diamonds are forever on a ring finger!

JHaWk4EvA 11 years, 1 month ago

I say we fully concentrate on getting Lance and let X take his sweet time deciding. He had the opportunity to sign and play with a national championship caliber team and passed for whatever reasons. Now we have given him a second chance to make the right decision and carry on his parents legacies and he still isn't convinced this is the right place. I think Lance would be perfect for our team because more than anything he has a will to win. We would have a very tuff back court with chi town's own Sherron and Taylor from Jersey, then if we added Brooklyn's Lance Stephenson with our stacked front court we will be set. Although i think X is a slightly better outside shooter, we need another slasher besides sherron that can create his own shot in certain situations. Lance also seems like he plays defense with much more intensity which Self always loves. Like others have said Lance might even stay for a couple of years and at that point he would be a FORCE. Bottom line we should make Lance our first priority. Anyone heard any updates on him?

BabyJay2009 11 years, 1 month ago

All of you will be surprised next week (earliest) or within 12 days at the latest. HCBS has something else up his sleeves! You just wait.

ravenjayhawk 11 years, 1 month ago

Too much drama. He's had about 18 years to decide about Kansas. Do we really want someone who realistically does not want to be here? We will have great chemistry without him actually. I know it took Darrell Arthur a long time, but he did not have 3 family members who had talked to him about Kansas for his entire life.

TexasHawk44 11 years, 1 month ago

hawkman1031: do you have something against girls? I sort of like them... But I guess bashing girls is full of "class". Nice call! Oh and by the way, I think the real number is 91.3 percent that are sick of the recruiting drama. I don't like the X bashing either but that doesn't mean that people can't be weary of the speculation, does it? I guess for you it does mean that.

I do think X is a good kid and a great player and has the right to play wherever he wants. I simply think that people (myself included) are tired of waiting. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be patient but it is human nature to get weary of waiting. Unfortunately, human nature also makes many of us mean-spirited and nasty at times too. I don't mind impatience by itself. It is when it is combined with ignorance that it becomes unbearable.

Note: Wilt might have several hundred undisclosed kids and grandkids running around that could suit up for us. Talk about a potential pipeline!

Jayhawkdave: Why would I call you an idiot because you don't like Lance? That is your opinion. Hey, you are entitled like all of us. I personally like his game and think he would make a nice addition to an already strong team. For me, it is hard not to like a top 10 recruit who plays the wing where we could really use some help, but again that is only my opinion.

As someone else posted on here earlier, Coach Self has one scholarship and I am completely convinced that he will end up with a quality player that will help our team. Maybe it will be Lance or X or Orton or who knows? Well, probably Bill Self -- that is who.

In the meantime, this like sitting at the electronic version of the Wheel and shooting the bull over a few cold ones with a diverse group of people -- some of them you like and some of them you cannot stand. But in this case (except to the idiot Mizzou and Kentucky posers), we all have a common love and interest -- Jayhawk basketball. And in the end, that is what it is all about here... Just an opinion.

hawk_of_ages 11 years, 1 month ago

Hawkman1031, I really appreciate your comments about KU fans showing some "class." It's too bad so few in this discussion thread are paying attention.

I've really had it up to here with those of you who insist on bashing an 18-year-old KU prospect whom you know absolutely nothing about. By your standards, Kirk Hinrich is also not a "true Jayhawk" -- after all, he committed to Iowa State and only came to Kansas after Tim Floyd left.

Everyone keeps saying that X's KU ties should have made this a no-brainer -- forgetting that it was those very same KU ties that led to his Memphis commitment. Calipari developed a relationship with Carl Henry because they were at KU at the same time.

I would love to have X -- or Lance for that matter. Or neither, if it comes to that. We'll be title contenders next year either way. But enough with the whining and name-calling, please...

thank you... thank you.... thank you!

i would like to preface that i will gladly take X or lance. it does not matter to me. what matters to me is people speaking so ignorantly based on their own emotions or beliefs as to what someone else (X) should do with his own life.

raven jayhawk,

X has had 18 yrs to decide where he wants to go? so are suppose to expect that sherron's son shermarr should be committing before he is out of diapers? seriously?! so since X has had family who went to KU, that means he cannot consider what school may be best for him?! seriously?

henry is a "slightly" better shooter than lance? how many games have you seen X play? how many games have you seen lance play? slightly? hmmm

c;mon people... these are real kids yet some of you people talk about them like they are recruits on your playstation. all the while, many of you have never seen them play in more than one game (McD's) and a couple of mix tapes on YouTube. considering another school is not a big deal!!!!! in fact, most all recruits do it. the only difference is that now, we get comments and blogs with up to the second updates and so some of you get worked into a frenzy.

whatever team takes the court at late night next october will be a team that i will be thrilled to see, even if some of the recruits may have had the nerve to consider another school.

Re: The John Wall story on zagsblog

“Carolina’s not really on my list,” he said. “I talked to Roy [Williams] before he went to the Final Four and I haven’t talked to him since then so I don’t know where that’s going.”

Well if there was any chance of him going to Carolina, it vanished right there. We all know what happens when you call Coach Williams "Roy"

Carl Henry was just on Lawrence Radio, 1320 Sports Talk. He said CJ and X would likely have a decision by this weekend and he didn’t know anything about the visit to UK on April 25th. He actually seemed a bit exasperated by the whole process and appeared to have no influence over their decision. Carl described CJ talking about liking the dribble drive style of Cal, where the guards run and push the offense up the floor. Carl said he tried to show CJ how KU does the same thing with Sherron, but it didn’t really seem to sink in with CJ. I feel bad for Carl, it is obvious he’d like them to go to KU, but insists it has to be their decision.

kufankam 11 years, 1 month ago

that is hilarious! i read that and thought the exact same thing... for all the talk of henry being a drama queen, wall sure seems to be getting a free pass. wall seems to be the one trying to live in the limelight. it seems like every other day he adds a school to his list. it will be interesting who the four will be next week?

that is an interesting bit of info... anyone think kentucky has a shot to be faster than ku next year?! i certainly don't. i think Carl is right, look at sherron's ability to push tempo. besides, ku's bigs are MUCH faster than the likes of patterson and orton.

TO ALL 2009 KU RECRUITING PROSPECTS: You have the unique opportunity to come to KU and, if you work very hard and sacrifice self for team, become a valuable addition to a squad that has many proven elements already in place. If you should choose to join this exclusive club, you will be led by two talented and mentally tough men -- Collins and Aldrich -- from whom you can learn a lot... about basketball and life. It's your choice. But if you are looking for a way station between AAU ball and the NBA, you should probably look elsewhere.

Tyler Daniels 11 years, 1 month ago

You guys have to understand, we aren't JUST waiting for X and CJ to make their decision, we are still waiting for Lance to make a decision too! We have offered both of them a scholarship and neither one of them has signed. For all of you saying "Forget X and just sign Lance" and etc, we have been waiting just as long for Lance as we have for Xavier. We offered a scholarship to Lance when Xavier was signed with Memphis! Don't you think if Lance really wanted to play for KU, he would have signed with KU already?

Michael Bratisax 11 years, 1 month ago

Isn't decision making a key part of being a top point guard? Between Lance and Xavier, I'm more than ready to move on. Next year's team doesn't need them. Elijah Johnson is the nations #5 rated point guard, Taylor will be much more consistent, Morningstar and Reed will have the confidence to take the 3 when needed and the nations top returning point guard, Sherron Collins, will be running the show. Even Releford will have matured and should be able to play key minutes. A one and done may only disrupt team unity. Enough already. moveon.jayhawk

If X was going to KU he would have committed by now.. The sad part for his dad is he has no influence in this matter and its showing. His sons are not doing him any favor by roasting him over the media fire. Let your dad off the hook and just say NO to KU, it's not fair to him. Let's get on with Lance and let X find out he can go to UK but he can't beat KU...

Some things amaze me about this...

First, KeithMilesS05 always seems to be the first poster. Congratulations sir/ma'am.

Second, I could not agree with him/her any more.

Third, the majority of posters don't want this kid or his brother. What I do want to see is more links to Willie Warren tea-baggin on a monster jam.

Fourth, and most important, is it disgusting that you have to read an article on the Henry's to get information about Stephenson?

Did we completely screw up getting Lance for the pipe dream that is the Henry's?

ehett2 11 years, 1 month ago

Not worried... Cal can't teach free throws and didn't learn that those are a VITAL part of the college game... until he learns I don't fear UK at all.

Lance Hobson 11 years, 1 month ago

Forget this guy. Why would we even want someone who's in love with Calippari? This guy is one and done and won't have a major impact on college basketball, so we need to move on. I'd rather have a guy who will develop and show leadership as an upperclassman. Xavier is a lacky to Cal and for such a good player is very flaky, just as his dad has been with the constant commenting to the media.

mjlindsm 11 years, 1 month ago

Sounds like Carl wants his kids to go to KU, Xavier isn't sure, and CJ wants to go to wherever Calipari is? No matter what decision they make, you've gotta respect that. I'd love to have Xavier. As soon as these egomaniacs and/or pessimists start spouting off on how much they hate Henry because he hasn't made up his mind yet, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy that they won't come to KU. X will understandably take the David Padgett route of "I don't want to be in Lawrence if everyone (meaning the vocal minority) there hates me."

Does Lance remind anyone an awful lot of Bill Walker? Strong, 6'5", good midrange and inside game without a great 3-point stroke, one of the best high school players around, has an attitude/chip-on-the shoulder? They even look a little bit alike. Walker at that point in his life was much more athletic than what I've seen from Lance and Lance a bit more polished of a scorer, but I just can't help thinking how many similarities they have. Anyone else notice this or agree?

mjlindsm 11 years, 1 month ago

Anyone else read that a St. John's player is transferring? Uh-oh. They needed a scholarship to get Lance. This is bad news.

jaybate 11 years, 1 month ago

} Losing Orton is brutal, one of those losses few will notice, as long as they are living on the dream of a ring for next year. But its Hole city in the middle when Cole leaves. With Orton, we would have had an experienced bruiser ready to take Cole's place immediately. Without Orton, no experienced bruiser in the paint until 3 seasons from now, unless one believes Kieff and Withey will alchemically transform from 4s playing the 5 to a 5s playing the 5.

} Someone explain Orton's comment that he's staying at UK, because it would be too tough to re-open recruiting. How tough is picking up the phone and calling Bill Self and saying send me the paper work to fill out to come to KU? Why would he have had to reopen recruiting at all? Are we to infer that Self turned him down again and leaving UK meant looking for a new school? What gives here?

} How quickly one's perception of things can change in a day. Yesterday, it looked like KU was in the driver's seat and had been for a week or so. Today the Orton domino fell the wrong way and now one wonders if the X and Lance dominoes might follow that wrong direction, too?

} X Forecast: he will go to UK. Why? Not just because of Orton, but because Carl will be given a job. It will be announced a couple of months after X and CJ announce--a decent interval as they say. Pastner didn't offer Carl a job, because he believed Carl had no interest. Carl also only rejected Pastner's offer. He said he had his AAU work to attend to. He left the door open for a job offer at UK, or KU. It appears a job for Carl is the only way to keep the Henry family "together and happy," as X keeps saying he is trying to do, unless the Henry boys go to an Oklahoma school.

} The only way I see X coming to KU now is if Perk and Self fork up a very fat job at KU for Carl. One almost gets the feeling the Henry family is giving both UK and KU time to outbid each other on Carl's possible job offer.

} My common sense tells me Self would sign Lance today, if Lance were willing. A bird in the hand in this case is worth two in the bush. Self doesn't need X to win the ring next year. Lance would do just as well. Inference: Lance must be holding Self up for some reason.

} Theutus, get ready to watch Brady for another year at the three.

} Did anyone notice Norm Roberts shed a big today. Anyone bet Quintrel is in a St. John's uniform next year?

Ugh! It didn't occur to me to worry about St. Jack's clearing one for Lance. Yeow!

Aligned 11 years, 1 month ago

These recruiting saga's really make you appreciate a guy like Aldrich. He knew he wanted to go to KU and committed as a junior, if I remember correctly, and never wavered. Now he has a couple Big 12 championships under his belt, along with a NC ring, one of a handful of triple-doubles in NCAA tournament history, and many other prestigious awards. Then he decides that he likes being here so much that he turns down what looks to be a certain lottery pick situation to return for another year. What a fabulous student athlete.

Jack Wilson 11 years, 1 month ago

As I have been saying for a number of weeks now, many times told I was an idiot .. even on these pages, we have blown it. We aren't getting X or Lance. Lance was a done deal. We should have simply taken his commitment and forgotten X. Now, we'll get neither of them because we hesitated on Lance.

And anyone who thinks we're a national title contender without one of them (or Wall), is delusional. If Brady Morningstar is starting; if Reed is getting any real time; forget it. We need a true 3rd option. Without it, we're not a real contender.

TexasHawk44 11 years, 1 month ago

JayBate: are you really Bill Self in disguise? You seem to know a lot of details about the KU program that nobody else is privy to. Losing Orton is not a disaster. He is not Wilt or Kareem. There are other Bigs that will be talented that Self can recruit to replace Cole. If Self were that worried about it he would have signed Orton to begin with. KU was his first choice, not UK.

Or are you really Greasy Johhny C. in disguise? Because you already know that Carl will get a job at UK. Wow! You must be Slick Johnny!

Give me a break!

TexasHawk44 11 years, 1 month ago

highelitemajor: i agree we could really use a 3. I hope that we have not blown it with Lance. We do need a third scorer. However, we do have three other quality recruits coming in (including Withey). None of them are 3's but Self has a good history of using pg/combo guards to get offense -- look at Illinois in the past.

I don't know what happened for sure or what is going to happen and anyone on this board who says they do is both a member of the coaching staff or a recruits family member PLUS they are a psychic. And I for one, don't believe anyone posting on here fits any of that criteria.

Chicago_JHawk 11 years, 1 month ago

Why are people so convinced we hesitated on Lance? Unless we spoke to him (and broke NCAA regs to do it), he's the one who hesitated. The offer has been on the table this whole time, unless I'm missing something. It's up to him to make a decision he's comfortable with.

Michael Bratisax 11 years, 1 month ago are 100% correct. I would have corralled Orton. He is the type of anchor teams are built around.

the jayhawks do not need either, i believe cole and sherron can carry this team on their backs next year all the way to a national title...they should've gotten to the final 4 this year.

The "drama" really isn't in the recruits, but in we bloggers. If I didn't get up and log on every day to read the latest update from ljw and read everyone's opinions, I would not have "THE observational recruiting blue balls". Every day I get up looking for something new and, unfortunately, we have signed no recruit(s).

I feel guilty for loosing sight of how our 'rebuilding' team made such off season gains and put together a great season.

Hey LJW- put some information together on the off-season regimens our players/coaches plan.

TexasHawk44 11 years, 1 month ago

again: if Orton is the next Shaq, why did Self pass the first time?

jaybate 11 years, 1 month ago

Here's my concern. You are really as weird as you appear in pixels. Now that is scary. :-)

But let's get down to today's lesson plan, shall we?

Unless Self can land someone this year, as good or better than Orton, it means that when Coach Self recruits this future ether center you are anticipating, he will come in as a green freshman the season after next. This means that KU will have all this great talent and a green center. This means KU will not have a chance at winning a ring until the sapling center's sophmore or junior years. Teams with green centers do not win rings. Capice?

Even the freakishly mature Kevin Love could not propel a talented and experienced and deep UCLA team to a ring.

Even Greg Oden, the 18 year old with the 40 year old face, could not propel a talented Ohio State team to a ring.

Even Wilt Chamberlain as a sophomore could not lead a team to a ring.

Even Bill Russell as a sophomore could not lead a team to a ring.

The only frosh centers I can recall leading teams to rings were Kareem and Walton.

Now do you see the freaking problem, you secret Adam Sandler?!

Eric Williams 11 years, 1 month ago

Jaybate -

How come you are on this Orton kick? It's funny, when I hear about UK's recruiting class they talk about Meeks (return?) Patterson (return?) Cousins (commit) and then they talk Henry and Wall. Funny no mention of Orton being part of that "core". But then again Orton is the kind of player that you recruit to come off the bench and then truly play in his sophomore year? Give me a break.

Re: Carl Henry taking a job at UK, He said he wouldn't work at "any" school because he wants to work with youth and that "he's done coaching his kids, it's someone else's job now"

But we're supposed to believe that the great, anonymous Jaybate knows more than Carl Henry himself.

The way I see your opinion on the Orton angle is that you LACK the confidence in our current bigs to pick up the slack. Morris twins, Withey and Robinson apparently are only supporting characters and in your eyes Daniel Orton (A UNPROVEN HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR WHO HASN'T PLAYED A COLLEGE GAME) is the savior of University of Kansas basketball.

Give me a break. Every year there are 10-20 big guys that could potentially "change the game". Next year you'll be saying, we made the right move by passing on Orton because "INSERT FUTURE PLAYER HERE" is now available to sign with KU.

We don't need Orton, because we're not recruiting for 2010-11 season, we're preparing for a run at the 09-10 title.

ESPN says X will be a Jayhawk.

FoxSports says X will be a Jayhawk.

Carl (according to interview today) wants his kids to be Jayhawks.

X has reported today he might not make the UK trip afterall.

X wants to win a ring.

X wants to play fast.

KU will average 90+ a game next year.

KU will run more than they have since 2003.

UK will average 60+ (due mostly to a thin bench)

UK will be winded by the 2nd half (again, thin bench, young kids)

The KU fanbase (the real posters) want X & CJ (our original signee).

X & CJ both want championship rings.

KU will win one next year.

The UK thin benchers might not make the NCAA tournament.

Perhaps in the next 3 days we'll finally get the big declaration over with.

Rock Chalk X & CJ

Allen Fieldhouse looks forward to meeting you both.

Larry Smith 11 years, 1 month ago

Here is one thing to consider: KU was Orton's first choice. Coach Self decided to offer Robinson instead. That tells me that Coach Self knew exactly who he wanted and went out and got him.

DoubleDD 11 years, 1 month ago

The X is a dead issue, can we please move on. He isn't coming, he won't be coming. Before he commited to Memphis, KU was his number 2 only because he wanted to play with his brother CJ. Now with CJ riding the bench where ever he goes (except Memhpis) Kansas is now competing against Kentucky. hmm. 100 you say fans like me are being hard on the X and I should chill out. First explain to me how the X is considering Kentucky. X said from his own mouth that he was only choosing Memphis over KU because he wanted to play with his brother. Well news flash he won't being playing with CJ at Kentucky either, but he is making a visit next week. hmm. I don't know about you but I live in the real world, and I suggest you wake up from your dream. X doesn't want to play at KU. As most KU fans I would love to see X play his lone season in the Phog, but its not happening. My only regret with the X is he may have cost us Lance. 100 I'll chill out, if you get a clue.

100 11 years, 1 month ago

From a hot off the press EsPN Christopher Lawlor Article:

What X Henry had to say about his finalists:

Kansas:"Its only a four and a half hour drive from Oklahoma City, my brother originally committed there out of high school before signing a professional baseball contract, and I know the Kansas tradition through my mom & Dad. When my dad recieved a DVD of their 2008 national championship season, I watched it 50 times; it gave me chills," he said.

Kentucky:"I don't know anything about the program's history, but I do know Calipari is coach. Cal has a feel for building a program. He makes you already feel part of the program and wants you to succeed. He'll tell you honestly if you are ready for the NBA."

Two things stick out here. X is not stupid -- he is very aware Cal is "building", which means essentially UK might frankly not be very good next year.

Secondly, his heart is obviously with Kansas. He needs to feel "wanted" by Self to the point of "already" being part of the program. Presumably this is happening already as his UK trip has been cancelled.

Lastly X says, "I need to learn the game & get stronger. I'd like to go where the school could win the national championship."

KEITHMILES05 11 years, 1 month ago

Henry's have NO time table to visit UK. This is updated straight from the horses mouth of Xavier. Of course he hasn't spoken to pops so thing will be changing, no doubt.

Chicago_JHawk 11 years, 1 month ago

Someone posting on the Zags article makes a good point. If the Morningstar paying his own way thing is true, then KU has two scholarships available. Lance backed off when X became available again b/c he doesn't want to play with X - a highly rated frosh at the same position. He doesn't want to sign and then have X come too, so he's waiting on X's decision.

X is obviously going where CJ goes, but was quoted as saying it's not ablout playing with him, but keeping the family together. Seems like he'd be willing to go to a place where CJ has to sit out a year. So, it sounds to me like CJ needs to decide where he wants to be, bite the bullet and transfer, then hope for the best with the NCAA. X will follow him. Hopefully it will be soon, so Lance can either sign w/ us if X goes to UK or stays at Memphis, or Lance signs somewhere else if X comes here. If it drags out, though, I could see him signing somewhere else in the meantime.

TexasHawk44 11 years, 1 month ago

Jaybate: you are just a bad joke... Please...

I mean you are really laughable and in this case: uninformed.

Self passed on Orton. Self is the coach of Kansas. You on the other hand are moronic anonymous poster spewing your "insider information" and "well-honed analysis" to the nobody-with-half-a-brain-gives-a-damn club.

As I have said numerous times and as Jayhawk86 also points out. Self did not want Orton or he would have signed him in the first place. Until you are running the KU program, what you think, say and write means just as little as anyone else on this site. So go breath some oxygen and get a clue...Capice? Claro? Entiende? Get it? Huh?

p.s. Adam Sandler? What? Pixels? Huh? Grow up...

jhawkln: The article isn't saying Lance is with Syracuse. They are referencing him to another Mr New York State b-ball player. I read it 2-3 times before it made sense. AGAIN, Lance has not signed with Syracuse!!

I don't care which of these two guys sign, but I've always wanted Lance. I like Henry but when he signed with Memphis, it gave me reason to question his real intentions.

Lastly, the reference to Lance's KU intentions and now waiting, he never signed with KU or any other team. That's the difference between Lance and X! X signed KU away and that's why most in KU nation want Lance over X. I think we're all settling on either recruit and in then end we'll come together to support whoever signs.

Jeff Kilgore 11 years, 1 month ago

As I have said before, wouldn't it be simpler for Self to set a deadline for recruits? Easier on him, and we still get great recruits. I would rather have Stephenson in than have to wait another week for Henry. He turned us down once, so I expect that he'll do it again. Truthfully, we'll do great without either one. We can win it all without them if players reach their potential. I am not checking on these players until I hear someone at work tell me real news. This waiting is like junior high girls wanting to know about some boyband concert. I'm embarrassed.

Eric Williams 11 years, 1 month ago

Remember a lot of these guys have egos. Xavier and Lance included.

They like to be the center of attention. I think John Wall is holding out to be the "last" recruit so that the whole nation is watching.

Then he'll do some stupid press conference with 5 hats on the table and he'll fake at each hat, then pick up UNC, THEN drop UNC and pick up Duke. Then he will be forever hated at UNC and ESPN will writer 15 articles interview each UNC and Duke player and getting there perspective, aka sensational quotes, and make us all read crap.

I think that Lance and Xavier secretly like having KU and UK (XH) and KU, Maryland, and St. John's (LS) fans wrapped around their fingers.

They are milking it for all it's worth.

Brett Glover 11 years, 1 month ago

Well, I can't complain about having X. Beside the story that everyone really likes about, i Just really hope we get Lance even though we might not...
