KU recruit scores 11

— Future Kansas University basketball guard Elijah Johnson scored 11 points off 5-of-6 shooting in the Black Team’s 151-145 loss to the Gold Squad in Saturday’s Derby Festival Classic at Freedom Hall.

Johnson, a 6-2 point guard from Las Vegas’ Cheyenne High, had eight assists against two turnovers in 19 minutes.

After the game, Johnson told that he speaks often with Xavier Henry, who has asked out of a letter-of-intent with Memphis and now is also considering KU and Kentucky.

Johnson said Henry, a 6-6 guard from Oklahoma City, was “struggling between Kansas and Kentucky right now.” Johnson said that he thought there was a “65 percent chance he would go to Kansas and 45 percent chance he would attend UK.” The Website noted Henry “may not be the best at percentages, but his instinct that Kansas is a slight favorite may be true.”

Johnson waved a KU shirt to the fans during introductions, drawing boos from a majority of the 13,111 fans. A clip of Johnson’s spectacular dunk to conclude the scoring is available at

That's awesome that EJ waved a Jayhawk shirt in Bluegrass country.

sick nasty!!! i think that should be his new nickname

lv_jhwk 10 years, 9 months ago

As evidenced by his percentages on X's decision, EJ has definitely taken the saying "give 110%" to heart!!

FlaHawk 10 years, 9 months ago

“65 percent chance he would go to Kansas and 45 percent chance he would attend UK.” says Johnson. At KU, we don't recruit for math abilities or no one X is confused onhis choice. He is highly leveraged it appears :-)!

Rock Chalk Championship...Kansas takes the title!... will happen with EJ and Robinson... These kids will put us over the top!

Tough and confident kid, going into Kentucky and Louisville territory and waving a KU shirt to the fans. I just became an instant Elijah Johnson fan!

Chris Weaver 10 years, 9 months ago

son - they are going to love you on the hill. representing in kentucky -

and that dunk was sick.

Fred Davis 10 years, 9 months ago

How awesome is this kid? He starts the game by representing his Hawks and then caps if off with the nastiest dunk of the night... While everyone has gotten lost in the Xavier and Lance drama, we overlooked that Bill has brought in two extremely talented kids already... Regardless of who does or doesn't decide to attend KU, 2009-2010 is going to be a very exciting season...

Matt Bowers 10 years, 9 months ago

That's whats up. Waving the Kansas shirt was just as sweet.

melrank 10 years, 9 months ago

Awsome dunk and throwing down the gauntlet with the KU shirt is really a nice touch, but 5 of 6 shooting and 8 assists with only 2 turnovers in an all star game? That might say something about this kid.

I'd say there is a 70-40 chance he will do that dunk during the closing moments of next years blow-out of K State at AFH :)

Anyone watch the USA vs. World team game. X and Wall both participants. Wall is incredible. X dropped a lot of 3's and I think he was the high scorer. However, Wall gets well above the rim on slams and blocks. He can jump from the free throw line, much like Jordan, to slam.

Tony Bandle 10 years, 9 months ago

WOW!!!! Maybe we KU fans have our third scoring threat and just don't know it yet.

Perry Ellis...I got to see him play and even as a freshmen, I think he could make it in a KU eight man rotation. Let's see if Roy and Cal and Coach K show up for this kid!!!

PS... if X sees those EJ clips, he might think twice about KU....good to see this kid is even working on the recruiting trail for HCBS. He may end up selling popcorn at AFH during the timeouts!!! Looks like a real winner.

JHAWKBALLER 10 years, 9 months ago

What about Thomas Robinson, I thought he played in this game too. EJ will electrify AFH.

tulsahawkfan 10 years, 9 months ago

EJ also had a pretty sweet two-handed 360 dunk earlier in the same game: Nothing beats the other but this kid obviously is a stud athlete.

tennesseest 10 years, 9 months ago

WOW, What a Dunk!!! And the T-Shirt waving is exactly the type of pride all of us in Jayhawk Nation have. Who cares about X and all of his drama?! Let's sign kids that WANT TO BE HERE!! If he's considering Kentucky, the excuse of him not wanting KU because of his brother is BS. If Lance wants to play here, let's sign him NOW! Kids who care about the name on the jersey more than the name on the back succeed at KU(Jackson, Kaun, Rush, Arthur, Chalmers, Aldrich, Collins- EJ!!!)!!! Championships lead to Draft Picks!

best thing 8 assists with 2 turnovers! this has been addition we need. True point to dish to Sherron & Tyshawn & Cole & Morris & Mario & Robinson & X ? & Lance? will have to play intense. guys will know give 110% and take a rest someone coming in do the same no depth in country could match. some rotations EJ , Sherron, Cole, Marcus & Tyshawn start . Tyshawn spectactular dunk and steal extreme defense... fist up in comes X ... Cole 2 blocks outlet and 2 slams... in comes Robinson.... Marcus steal dunk, block & foul... in comes Markieff.... all can average double digits and minutes.. plenty of room. who would have this depth Sherron , Cole , Marcus, Markieff , Tyshawn , EJ , Robinson , X , Lance , Brady , Mario , Releford , Tyrell WOW no team could match our intensity. no one would ever have to get tired... one out equal in. team could score 100 and play toughest D.

I simply can't wait for the 2010 season to begin. Standing O ;) for EJ here on the hill and he will definitely get a lot of love here at KU.

Come on already Xavier and CJ...fulfill your prophecies and take part of your destined family tradition and cap it off with a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Tbird_KU 10 years, 9 months ago

Whooaa!!! HCBS was right, this kid will be the best athelete on the team!

What a difference a dunk makes! :-)

Elijah. Ancient Prophet of Getting to the Rim. First man to have dunked in the Jerusalem City League back in 100 B. C. First man to have windmilled on the Mount of Olives. First man to have gone base line on the Roman national team. First man to have posted up the King of Persia, a natural 2 guard himself, in a one on one game played before 500,000 left-handed fans, and belly dancing cheer leaders.

Fast forward two millenia...

Welcome Elijah the New. Coming from the American Sinai of Nevada to the Mount of Oread and the Temple of Allen to play his game.

I don't want to rain on anyone’s parade...but lets be a little realistic here guys. Look at the score of that game? I'll believe he's the second coming when he can do that against a Big XII defense. My guess is he's gunna get slapped around much the way Mario Chalmers did when he first to took the court in college.

melrank 10 years, 9 months ago

Jaybate, that was right up there with the orginal Okieballer schtick. Pun intended. Funny.

No rain on my parade. Most Big XII kids can't do that in their drive way. We need that type of athleticism on our team next year.

rockchalker07 10 years, 9 months ago

Well...he might as well have been on his driveway. Look at the defense in the video, THEY'RE WALKING! Are you kidding me!? When he's forced to play tight Bill Self Man for 40 minutes he won't be 360 dunking jack! Enjoy the highlight while you can, he'll be good but you'll never see that in any "real" game.

KUSmurf 10 years, 9 months ago

I don't know, this dunk still impresses me more for a high school allstar game.

Haha, but seriously though, I would love to see some of that from Elijah in game (however rarely it is)

Tony Bandle 10 years, 9 months ago

Oh, come on rockchalker07.

Lighten up a bit. We all know it was an "ALL-Star" Game which translates each guy takes turns doing something outrageous. You're most likely correct about that move in true gametime.

HOWEVER, you're missing the point. The point is Elijah is capable of doing that move, translating into extra athleticicsm which WILL make a difference in game circumstances. Most importantly EJ wants to be a Jayhawk and isn't afraid to let everyone know about it.

Mr. Robinson is also going to be an impact player when he makes the O and D boards his "neighborhood"

Add Jeff Withey, Condor II with a smooth sense of movement with an outside touch to go with his 7'-0" height.

If Cole and Collins stay [ call them the C and C Express], the OADs we are talking about will be boni [Is that the plural of bonus???}

Man, if EJ can recruit the Henry brothers for us, I think there'll be a 90% chance that we'll win a title next year, with a 20% chance someone will upset us in the final four.

Dirk Medema 10 years, 9 months ago

KUSmurf - Thanks for the post. I was dreaming of that even before I got to yours. Best thing was that Durant was trailing and thinking he was being set up for the final throw done. It was sort of in your face to his own "teammate", but really just setting the stage for things to come.

I like the similarity of Sherron to EJ, even if there really isn't much similarity at all in their game. Just continue to represent.

He's from Vegas, sometimes their math is a little different when calculating odds. Luckily we have math tutors at KU.

I watched that game and those two dunks at the end of the game where AWESOME! Especially that last one! And he had one earlier in the game it was a one handed dunk in traffic where he jumped mid way in the lane and threw it down. He looked a lot like mario playing defense, his length and quickness should get him tons of steals. He made one for 2 from three his three point shot didn't look as smooth as mario more like taylors but hey I only saw him shoot a few. Anyway most impressive thing was his passing he had some awesome bounce passes and no looks, and only 2 turnovers!!! Peyton Siva the mcdonalds all american going to louisville that people couldn't stop talking about had 8-10 assists as well but he turned it over like 10 times and missed a ton of shots, honestly johnson was one of the most impressive he just wasn't very selfish with the ball like some of the others. Oklahoma state had a really nice looking guard in the game I can't remember his name but he had like 20 points. And i hope we get xavier or lance but man that Snaer kid that picked florida state over us had like 30 points and couldn't be stopped sucks we missed out on him. But oh well with sherron and Cole coming back and johnson and robinson coming in it's going to be an awesome year for sure!
