Former Kansas University basketball players Darrell Arthur and Mario Chalmers on Friday apologized for being expelled from the NBA's Rookie Transition program.
Both said they broke rules in having women in their rooms, but denied published reports that they used marijuana while in Arthur's room.
Chalmers of the Miami Heat released an apology through the team "to NBA commissioner David Stern, Heat owner Micky Arison, Heat president Pat Riley, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and the Kansas basketball family."
"Everyone who knows me knows I am a good person and I pride myself on doing the right thing," Chalmers said. "I am embarrassed this happened. I broke the rules, but I did not smoke marijuana."
Chalmers and Arthur could be fined up to $20,000 apiece and may face a suspension at the start of the season. They will have to attend the NBA orientation program next September.
"I made a poor decision in putting myself in the situation that I did," Chalmers said. "It is a dream of a lifetime to play in the NBA and be part of the Miami Heat. I look forward to starting my NBA career. This was a one-time occurrence and it won't happen again."
Arthur apologized through the Memphis Commercial-Appeal newspaper.
"About the marijuana, I didn't have any," Arthur said. "I didn't have anything to do with marijuana or anything like that. I'd like to clear that up. ... I used bad judgment by bringing the girls in and violating the rules. I'm not a bad kid or anything. I just put myself in a bad situation. I want to apologize to the GM, the owner and all the fans. You won't hear my name in anything like this from here on out. It'll be straight and narrow from here."
Arthur told the paper he plans to rectify the situation in part by counseling Memphis youths.
"I want kids not to make the mistake I made," Arthur said. "I want to try to teach them the right thing to do. If you follow the rules you won't be in the same position I'm in. I feel terrible. I should have never opened the door. If I wouldn't have done that, everything would have been cool. I knew the rules and I made a mistake."
Miami Heat president Pat Riley called the expulsion of Chalmers "an embarrassment."
"It's something that really can't be tolerated," Riley said. "The shame of it is it is an embarrassment. He's absolutely embarrassed and morose about it. I don't think he's that kind of person, and I don't think he'll get himself caught in that kind of situation again."
The NBA Transition Program they were booted from focuses on life skills, handling finances, the importance of character and image, the difference between NBA and NCAA game rules, legal matters and dealing with media.
The situation early Wednesday morning became aggravated when Arthur and Chalmers initially refused security entry into the room at the resort. That decision prompted police officers to become involved.

20 years old and several hot women knock on your door at 11:00 at night and want to party. Hey, they opened the door even though they shouldn't have as Arthur said. At least, we know these guys are normal young males.

Mario's parents are really nice people. You have to feel for them in this incident. Tough learning experience. Reputations, at least good ones, are fragile things. And how many times have we heard (in print) Coach Self preach 'don't put your self in bad situtations' to Jayhawk basketballers. Moral of the story: If you are young, rich, and famous, you are a large target. Learn when to duck, guys!

Darrell said a lot when he said "I am not a bad kid or anything"If you still see yourself as a "kid", and not a "man"... then maybe you should've kept you're butt in college until you do grow up!

They didnt have or smoke marijuana?!? Give me a break. Why did the smoke alarm go off? Why was there a woman locked in the bathroom repeatedly flushing the toilet? Smoking pot is not even a big deal. Wow a couple of rich 20 and 21 year olds had pot and women in their hotel room, weird. Just own up to your mistakes.

These guys are Jayhawks and while I don't like what happened, I support them. Hopefully they learned a valuable lesson. Sometimes the rules suck, but you have to obide by them. If you don't, then man up, and accept the consequences. It sounds to me, from their apologies they are ready to do that. Next time there is a knock at the door and a hot woman is standing there with a fattie and a lighter, slam the door , lock it and start counting your numerous blessings. Best of luck guys. Make us proud...

This is why these two "young men" should have stayed in school and graduated. By then maybe they would have realized that this was a mistake and rules are rules. And maybe they could have helped bring another title to Jayhawk land down the road. A devout Jayhawk fan since "Wilt" !

There are only two relevant facts in this case in my own mind:1. What they did was wrong! People here should be ashamed for suggesting that their infractions should be overlooked or even soft-peddled. I went through life as pubescent and young-adult male and I know the thrill of the opposite sex. I made mistakes there myself so this is not about being hypocritical. But I wasnt given a "pass" for doing things I knew were wrong either, and there were consequences for my actions. Furthermore, when Mario and Darrell decided to leave EARLY for the NBA, they were making an implicit statement that they were READY to become professionals!!!! So I echo ksstreaker's remarks in that regard.2. Having said all of the above, what is equally true is that Mario and Darrell should be given support. That's what a family is for. You pick each other up when you are down. So for all of these people with nothing but malice and negativity for these young men, you can go to hell. People make mistakes! ALL people make mistakes, so if there be any among you without sin let him cast the first stone. They are sorry for what they've done and I guarantee you the embarrassment they have brought upon their families for this incident would have been punishment enough without the fines and expulsions. They need to be given the freedom to move on from this and recover thier dignities. I feel they should be embraced just as much now as they were when they led us to a championship.

The big thing here that doesn't make sense to me is the actions of the NBA. They were at a rookie seminar that teaches rookies how to AVOID situations that they were caught in, so what does the NBA do, kicks them out and will make them complete the seminar NEXT year, a little late don't you think. If I was Stern, I think I would want them in the seminar ASAP. Maybe the whole orientation would have been more effective for all the rookies, as an example, if they were allowed to continue the orientation.Rock Chalk Champion-Hawk

I think it was the right move to kick them out of the rookie seminar. They broke the rules and brought a lot of unwanted attention on themselves and the NBA. Why should all of the other players at this camp who are following the rules have to deal with this distraction?

Niether of them said that there wasn't marijuana in the room. Mario said "I did not smoke marijauna" and Darrell said "I didn't have anything to do with marijuana or anything like that." Sure, perhaps these girls showed up knocking on their door and brought tidings of pot. I definitely believe that there was marijauna in the room... I believe that probably both of them smoked some. But seriously, I don't think that Mario and Darrell are "potheads" or are habitual users or any kind. I do believe that both of them are embarrassed and are remorseful for their mistakes. This whole thing has been blown out of proportion, not by the NBA, not by ESPN or KUSports.com, but by all of the people who want comment on these articles saying that all professional athletes use weed, and that this is proof that Mario and Darrell are potheads. And also by the people who go overboard wanting to crucify these two for making a single mistake.JBurtin/Ross are right. Consider this a lesson learned and don't forget it. There will be consequences for your actions.

I agree about them not using MJ. I mean they should certainly be taken a their word, no reason to assume guilt rather than innocence. Further, these guys are subject to random drug testing that will only intensify after this incident. It is not at all unlikely that they were looking for some action from some girls who wanted to light up. You know, people can say no.

I am hopefully sure that they will not screw up again. I am sure that a pee test has been already done, so if they lied to their coach, they would be in more dog poop! So take them at their word! Thanks Darnell Jackson for the great letter! You are truly CLASS!

Interesting comment by Shady: "If I hadnt opened the door, everything wouldve been fine..." (paraphrase). It could be that the groupies picked their room, and the 2 youngsters (read: immature/starstruck/naive-to-NBA) unwittingly opened their door, and in walks the wrong kind of party. Obviously this is fairly commonplace, I deduce, as the NBA has put together a 4 day presentation called 'Rookie Camp' to cover pitfalls just such as this. Cmon guys, you both made us SO proud for us to give up on you or write you off. Mistake made. Lesson learned. We all move on. Still rootin' for you both to win (in everything...). And you will. Its what champs do.
