(Expletive) chant remains

The Jayhawks were one-point favorites going into Saturday's game against Texas Tech, but that certainly wasn't the case by the end.

The University Daily Kansan's effort to bring a new kickoff chant to Memorial Stadium succeeded Saturday, but the effort to rid the old obscene chant failed.

The newspaper polled students on which new proposed chant they liked best, and the winner was: "Kayyyyyy (kick) Youuuuuuu!" Some students executed the chant, which triggered a roar of approval from other sections of the stands. Yet, a large portion of the students stayed with the old chant, "Rip his (expletive) head off!," which was ripped off from the Adam Sandler movie "The Waterboy."

This is important because KU is an institution of higher education. Kids need to learn to speak truthfully. Just when was the last time KU ripped anybody's head off? Can't talk like that if you can't play defense.

I like how the language gets people upset but the violence in the chant seems to be fine. This has as much sense as the MPAA.

Did you really think they were going to yell kaaaaaay u. Come on the more this is brought up the more the students are going to yell "rip his expletive head off". I watched the game on tv and i thought out of all the games this was the first time i could hear it real well which means they were yelling it alot louder than normal. Way to go students keep up the good work and dont change a thing, just remember that you pay a lot of money to go to KU so you can say whatever you want. Dont let them tell you what to do!!! Rock Chalk!!!

... And everyone expected what exactly? I'm just looking forward to another UDK with multiple articles about the chant. I love how there's been something in that for pretty much every day.Oh, avaholic, the violence doesn't bug anybody because it quickly became clear that our defense wasn't going to be ripping any heads off yesterday. From what I heard, the real reason the university is trying to get rid of the chant is that Adidas is threatening to drop us. I dunno if it's true, but that would make sense. Dollar signs...

breaking news____Mangino after hearing about all this chant non-sense decides to stop scoring against Texas Tech. All in an effort to avoid the "rip his f----ing head off' chant.

It's not like they made it up, so why do they keep repeating this unoriginal yell from a really stupid movie? I think KU has some really dumb students. Luckily most of them will be gone before they are seniors.

This is a case of the vocal minority. No, not the students still yelling it. The people who are so offended by it.You don't teach kids about things by hiding them from them. Don't want your children using this word? Well then instead of assuming you can shelter them from it, use this as a chance to explain to them that there are some words not to be used in everyday conversation and this is one of them. While most of the bandwagon...err crowd... left by halftime, I was in the student section until the 1:30 in the fourth quarter mark. Standing about two rows behind me was a group of alums, easily in their sixties. By this time, the "dark" part of conversation had ended, and we were light heartedly poking fun at ourselves and the team. As soon as we reached the red zone on that last touch down drive, an older gentlemen, obviously an alum, behind me yelled "Quick, score a touchdown! I want to yell rip his ****ing head off!!!" and preceded to do just that on the ensuing kick off. He was well into his AARP years. So I'm sick of hearing all this "immature, stupid college students" nonsense. Words are words. Plenty of teachers/lecturers/professors at this university have used that word in class, whether you like it or not. Using a word does not make one stupid, but being so horribly offended by four simple letters does. Don't like the word? Don't say it. That's your choice. The student section, however, probably will.

I was encouraged by the new chant of "rock chalk" and "jayhawk" going back and forth between the halves of the stadium.I've tried to get the cheerleading coach to try something similar to this last year because I thought that the "go" "jayhawks" was just too generic. I kind of threw him under the bus on the message board last week because the only one he ever tried was just too complex.I was thinking that because of the football chant issue going around it was likely that he read the comment section about it trolling for ideas. Perhaps he read my comment and decided to give something simpler a try.If you do read this. Sorry that I was so harsh, I probably should have just emailed you again.I think that the new chant that you came up with took off really well and seemed to energize the team and the crowd. Hopefully you felt the results were good enough that you'll try it again next week against a team that doesn't have us so badly overmatched. Kind of hard to get a crowd pumped back up when the team gives up 49 straight points.I don't know what to tell you on the kickoff chant. I'm not opposed to changing it, but it's just easier said than done.
