Kansas head coach Bill Self speaks at the 2008 Big 12 Media Day.

Kansas University junior forward Mario Little, who has been bothered by a stress fracture in his lower left leg off and on since last spring, will sit out the next two to four weeks of basketball practice and games as he continues to receive treatment.
"Mario's leg is not responding. He's going to take an extended period of time off," KU coach Bill Self said Friday. "It's just not getting better, so we're going to take an approach where he's totally off it. We'll let the stress fracture continue to heal as opposed to trying to work through it now."
Little has his left foot in a boot and was using crutches Friday to keep weight off his leg.
"There's not much rehab you can do," Self said. "He'll do the bone stimulator. He'll ice. He'll do a few things basketball-wise, but we're not going to let him be on the court for at least two weeks, but that's probably going to be closer to four."
Little, last year's junior college player of the year at Chipola (Fla.) Community College, figures to miss KU's Nov. 4 and 11 exhibition games. The regular-season opener is Nov. 16 versus UMKC.
"He hasn't felt right since he's been here," Self said of Little, who said he first felt pain in pick-up games after the conclusion of last season. He took some time off after KU's Labor Day weekend trip to Canada, but has felt pain again lately.
No surgery is being considered at this time.
"It is showing that it's healing," Self said of X-rays of the fracture. "We will take the approach to totally stay off it awhile."
And if it bothers him after returning in a few weeks?
"Probably just give it more time," Self said.
KU junior guard Tyrone Appleton, who has yet to practice in live drills because of a hip flexor injury, has been able to participate in non-contact drills where he can run straight ahead. He is unable to cut. Self has said he hopes Appleton can return within a week.
¢ Clinic begins: Several hundred small college, junior college and high school coaches are in town for Self's annual coaches clinic. The coaches attended Friday's practice, will attend a morning session of camp, watch KU's football game against Texas Tech, then return for a late-afternoon clinic session.

Reed, Teahan and Morningstar get their big chance for the next four weeks. Who will emerge as capable? And most likely this big chance will turn into an additional four week window, as Little works his way back into shape. Injuries. They always become the sticks in the river that create the chaotic eddies down stream. This team gets its first chance to master turbulence. Destiny as always, is sensitively dependent on initial conditions.Post Script: Rest Little till January if its necessary.

Jaybate, the way you put it, it's a blessing in disguise. More players would get the opportunity to get valuable game time minutes and get further developed. You'd never know when you need those back-ups to come through for us.

Well, the starting lineup is starting to look more and more like it will have 3 freshmen in it on opening night. It's kind of weird how both of our Juco transfers have been banged up already. The thing about Little is he's got about the most experience on the team and we'll need him. This year will be a little bit unlike others in the respect that the results of games in the non-conf season COULD be a little more important. (if we end up on the bubble on Selection Sunday)

My question is if he knew he had a stress fracture since spring, why in the name of dumb-asserry didn't he rest it over the summer instead of waiting for practice to start and make it worse?

I don't think this injury is a blessing in disguise at all. We all said the same thing last year with Brandon Rush going down and then Rodrick Stewart stepped in. Rodrick did a great job, but he didn't help out at all during conference or at the end of the season. I've always been a Reed and Morningstar fan and I've always thought there was room in the rotation for one of them in the rotation despite this injury to Little. It definitely will allow some guys to step up short-term, but somebody will be left out in the cold just like Rodrick was last year.

I agree it was more than dumb that he did not let it heal this summer. Somebody dropped the ball on this one.

On the recruiting note (off topic), I don't think Collins or Aldrich will be leaving after this year. Yet I still would like to see them add two of those kids (if X comes). Somebody like a Cheek or Snaer. I have heard concerns with Stephenson being a team player... but those could be unfounded. I want a solid big wing that will be around for a few years with EJ and Robinson. With only losing two to graduation I believe that we need one of the practice players to step up for the team and give up their scholarship (Buford... maybe Teahan, Morningstar or possibly Reed if they are not going to make an impact on the court in big games). I like these kids and am glad they are part of the program but we have a chance for something great next year with the growing up that this team will go through this year.Bringing in Robinson side by side with Aldrich, with Morris Twins and Q in there... exciting future!I love the upside of Tyshawn and Releford. We will be young this year, expectations are somewhat low and we will surprise a lot of people as nobody knows this team.

This group is not used to the intensity of Div 1 bball practice.

I don't think there is much of a risk that KU is a bubble team at the end of the year. I don't think we'll finish lower than 4th in the Big XII and the conference will get at least 5 teams in.As for Little, I'm just upset we have to wait to see him in action. I think it will give Releford and Taylor alot more minutes though.

Some times you have got to suck it up and play hurt...just kiddin. Better that we get these injuries out of the way now instead of later, plus these type of things are not uncommon. Athletes at this level are playing hard nose basketball year round and it is bound to take a toll on your body. Yes Mario should have gotten the injury taken care, but lets face it, when you go from the Red Roof Inn to Waldorf Astoria you try to please. Cannot blame the kid for trying. This means:1. Reed, Teahan, Morningstar get their break and opportunity to step up2. It brings the team together, creating a bond that is necessary to battle on the court3. We develop a solid 6-8 man out of one of the three This is not the end of the world and Self is going to guide this team, like every other team he has coached. What would we blog about if everything were perfect? CMKUbLu304 no need to freak out, it is not like the stock market lost 30% of its value and your 401k is in the gutter.Strlkewso not too many people are used to Div 1 bball practice. However, they would not be at Kansas if Self did not think they could handle it. Hell of a football game today.Rock Chalk

Everyone is going to be impressed with Mario Little--wise to wait and unleash him when he is 100%. He is going to have to play himself in shape also, so we may see him hit his stride actually in mid-Dec. Of course I hope its sooner. But Div1 conditioning takes time.

Reed will emerge as the best back-up. Saw him in summer leagues. Chisled. Played good D and made his 3-pointers.

Reed and Releford will get their chance. I don't think Teahan and Morningstar will be able to compete against good teams especially during big XII play.

Teahan and Buford are walkons. Morningstar shouldn't even have a scholie cause his dad is already employed at KU and can go there for free.

justanotherfan.....I think you pegged the opening day line-up pretty well, although Teahan might be the backcourt foul trouble sub instead of Morningstar. Then after Little and Appleton return, Quintrell's PT will drop to about 7-10 minutes per game max. I think they are calling him 6'7 but he might be 6'6. I don't think he's that good of a jumper, so he doesn't play bigger than he is. At this time, he looks like a man without a position at the D1 level. Teahan and Morningstar will go back to cheerleading after Little and Appleton return
