— No offense to Leno, Letterman, Conan or Craig Ferguson.

But when Bill Self hops in the sack late at night, he's choosing a re-run over comedy on his TV: tape of Kansas University's 75-68 national-championship victory over Memphis.

"I've watched it 50 times. It's how I go to bed," Self, KU's sixth-year coach, said, entertaining a batch of reporters at Thursday's Big 12 Media Day in downtown Oklahoma City.

"I play the first part when we're playing well. I fast forward through all the parts when we're playing bad. I've gotten to the point now I fall asleep before Mario's shot.

"My wife and kids come in and say, 'Oh no. We're not watching it again!" Self added. "I love it. I love we won, but I love how we won it. Those guys were men out there playing. I remember when we recruited those guys, they were boys. They couldn't get the ball past halfcourt against Arizona. To win it three years later, that's what I think of when I'm watching it."

He's hoping his young 2008-09 Jayhawk team copies the likes of Mario Chalmers, Brandon Rush, Russell Robinson, Darnell Jackson, et al., learning from some possible hard knocks this nonconference season to grow and win it all themselves someday.

The process has started.

KU has had five practices since last week's Late Night in the Phog.

"It takes us an hour to do something last year's team took five minutes to do," said Self, who returns just four scholarship players.

"But still they work hard that entire hour at it, and they are trying. So that's exciting. These guys for whatever reason are so bought in trying to please. That's so fun to coach. They don't know what they are doing, but are trying to do whatever you tell them to do."

It has been slow going in teaching the basics to KU's seven newcomers.

"On our play card last year for the national-championship game, we had 53 plays, 53 different things we can do," Self said. "We've got two in right now, and we still can't remember those two. It takes time. It takes repetition.

"I'm being dead serious. We put in press offense yesterday and oooh," he grunted. "It's a good thing we did it at the end of practice. It would have ruined practice if we did it at the beginning."

Self is pleased to report two guys with experience, Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich, have led the way.

"Sherron is 'the guy' with us. It's the way I want it, to be his team," Self said.

And Cole ... "I mean he averaged two points a game last year and I'm surprised every time he misses now," Self said of the confident, active big man. "He certainly has raised everybody's expectation level of him."

Those two figure to be locks for starting positions.

"We'll probably end up starting three newcomers - two of them will probably for sure be freshmen, maybe a third, so we'll be young," Self said, not naming the three by name.

He was asked if freshman guard Tyshawn Taylor was "good enough to start from day one."

"I'm not saying he will (start), but talent wise absolutely," Self said. "He has a chance to be a really good player. 'Special' may be a little strong (word) right now because he's so young. He is different because he's so fast."

What about juco transfer Mario Little who can play small forward and power forward?

"He could (start) but he's been nicked with the stress fracture," Self said of a lower leg injury that Self said is healing. "I want to see him 100 percent. He's not been 100 percent since he's been here."

Twins Marcus and Markieff Morris?

"They are probably a little bit further along - both of them - than I thought they were," Self said. "Both are gifted skill wise. Neither one are college defenders - at all - maybe they'll get there. They have the knack for getting the ball in the basket."

Small forward Travis Releford has also been good.

"Travis is a catch it and drive it (player)," Self said. "He will be a good player. He has some things to improve on to be hard to guard. He can be a great defender."

Self said hopes to get juco guard Tyrone Appleton on the court within a week. He's been out with a hip flexor injury.

Of power forward Quintrell Thomas, Self said: "He's going to be good. He's an undersized four man. Even though he's 6-7 he's not real big. Absolutely he can play a comparable role to what Cole had last year. I can see that occurring."

To be fair ... Self also rattled off the names of KU's returning guards - Tyrel Reed, Brady Morningstar and Conner Teahan as having shots at starting slots and/or meaningful minutes. He said he's been impressed with all three.

It's still mighty early, evidenced by the interesting early practices.

"It's a lot harder this year because we have teaching. We've got to do things over, show them how to work hard. Even we are teaching," junior guard Collins said of the returning players teaching the rookies.

"It's a little different this year. Coach is more patient this year," Aldrich noted. "He's showing 'em how to do things. It can be frustrating at times. It's like me last year. I didn't quite understand it. Once things start to click and they will ... those (new) guys will be really good."

What?No mention of Matt Kleinmann getting sig mins?Seriously...Collins and Aldrich lock 1 and 5.Markieff backs up Aldrich and plays big minutes.Self says three frosh may start?Says Releford can be a "great defender," so Releford is third starter.Last two are tough.Looks like he planned on Little and Marcus Morris to start and Taylor to be the nitro boost that Sherron was last year, but Little's been too nicked to justify, Marcus' D sucks, and so Taylor may have to start. That's four.Starting Reed makes them too small and slow unless they are playing cream puffs. Reed may start five games early, but after that Marcus to start.Quintrell is already defined a 5-10 mpg man. Marcus with no D means a long season. Marcus with D means a good season. Are you working on your slides, Marcus?

keithmiles05,You don't know what you're talking about when dissing Teahan. The kid was the MO coaches' player of the year, and two-time MO Gatorade player of the year, and won the DiRenna as best KC player of the year. KU was lucky to get him as a walk-on. L-U-C-K-YHe was recruited by Stanford, Iowa, Purdue, et al.Oh, and in case you didn't know, Missouri prep basketball is a hell of a lot better than Kansas prep basketball.

I think he's talking about starting his 5 best players.Sherron, Tyshawn, Mario, Marcus, Cole. That is dependent on Mario's leg, and how far the freshman come defensively. If Mario's leg doesn't stop hurting you can throw Travis in at #3.

The one thing you can't "teach" is size. Marcus has that. He can learn to be a good defender, not great, but good. KU needs him in the lineup. He will cause a lot of matchup problems for most teams because of his versatility ala Rush.I know we won it all last year, but I'm so eager to see these new guys play. I don't know much about them, their games, or how they play. It's all new, and I can't wait to see the team develop as they did three years ago. Three more weeks......I've waited this long, I think I can wait a bit longer for the season to start.

jhawk23.....Calm down. Yes, Teahan did get recognized in all the ways you mentioned. But does that make him an elite basketball player? No.Is he an elite shooter? From what I have seen, YES. The kid has deep range on the 3. He's tall enough to rise over the typical 1 or 2 guard for his shot.Is he an elite defender? From what I have seen, NO. He doesn't have quick feet. He'll never be able to lock down a 3 guard, let alone a 2. He may even be a liability on the defensive end of the floor. Self, rightly so, emphasizes defense over shooting. He's basically Matt Lawrence (MU shooting guard) in Crimson & Blue.

jhawk23, I completely agree with you. Teehan is a talent we are lucky to have. I am not going to sit here and say he should start, but don't be surprised when you see him getting significant minutes this year. He is a great outside threat, has size, and know how to play D. He was offered several scholarships at other D1 schools and turned them down to come to walk on at KU. He is a great athlete, and a smart basketball player that will be good for KU down the stretch of the season. All you people who say no way Teehan will play, just wait. That is all I am saying.

No offence, jhawk23 but if Connor Teahen logs serious minutes for KU then the future is not as bright as many of us thought it was. He's a great kid with a lot of talent and he probably would have played a lot at Stanford, Iowa and Purdue. The problem is that he chose a school with numerous players that have exceptional talent and they will play before him once they learn the system. I love having him on the team and I hope he logs some early minutes if other guys aren't pulling their weight (like Vinson and Hawkins) but you shouldn't expect him to be a serious factor at KU. I'm not sure if most people realize how much talent we've had since Self has arrived. Roy did a great job while he was here but many of those players wouldn't find the court if you stacked them up against Roy's guys.

jhawk23 has lost his/her mind if you think MO prep basketball is better than KS. Every year the best MO team come over to Kansas to play in various tournaments and get trounced. Rockhurst during Teahan's senior year came into the St. Thomas Aquinas tournament ranked number 1 in MO, and got blasted by a not very good Shawnee Mission South team. Last year, SM East annihilated MO's two time (undefeated state champ) by over 30 points.

jhawk23,Teahan won a number of the awards you mention for his play in football. He was the starting QB for Rockhurt's always good football team. ShepHawk, a lot of times, those Missouri rankings overrank the suburban teams and underrank the innercity schools - hence why pretty regularly an inner city squad from either KC or StL makes a run in the Missouri state tournament from "out of nowhere." Don't trust the Missouri rankings at all - there is a TON of bias towards certain schools among the coaches in Missouri. I grew up in the KC area and watched this happen all the time. Now for the lineup.Collins and Aldrich were locks before, they are locks now.Self says three freshmen, because Little has been banged up. That's the tip off right there of who the three guys are. Opening night starting lineup will be (provided there are no injuries):PG - Sherron CollinsSG - Tyshawn TaylorG - Travis Releford (would be little if 100%)F - Marcus Morris (need his inside scoring)C - Cole AldrichMarkieff comes off the bench because he can pretty easily replace either Cole or his brother. Little can come off the bench for anybody in that lineup. If he replaces Sherron, Tyshawn slides to the point, Releford to the 2, Little plays the 3. If he comes in for Cole, Marcus mans the 5, Little plays the 4, we play small ball and run like crazy. Appleton eventually will be the other guard off the bench, and QBlock will get his 8-12 mpg as he develops into a lunch pail guy. Tyrel Reed gets the other backcourt minutes in the semi-regular rotation, while Morningstar and Teahan get mop up duty, along with Kleinmann.

I really doubt that Teahen will start this season. But with his shooting ability, why couldn't he log significant minutes? Let's not forget about role players folks. Many times, teams have guys that are just pure shooters who come in to drain some threes. I think Teahen is lacking in quickness and defensive ability (based on last year). But why not a Billy Thomas like player? Also, I was impressed with the way Tyrel Reed looked in what little of the scrimmage I saw. I know it's a tired comparison, but I saw a little Kirk in him. He looks quicker to me early on. I think he'll really have to battle for minutes, but by the time he is a Junior and Senior he could be a significant team leader. Let's not forget the old-fashioned college basketball player: Guys can improve and hit their strides as Juniors and Seniors. Not all of them have to be stars their first 2 years.

I loved this article! This was the best article I've read in a long time about the Jayhawks. It's refreshing to know that we have a coach who is able to adapt to the different scenarios of his teams as well as his players.""On our play card last year for the national-championship game, we had 53 plays, 53 different things we can do," Self said. "We've got two in right now, and we still can't remember those two. It takes time. It takes repetition.""I'm being dead serious. We put in press offense yesterday and oooh," he grunted. "It's a good thing we did it at the end of practice. It would have ruined practice if we did it at the beginning."You have to love Bill Self's honesty when it comes to his teams. It's refreshing to hear those quotes above and I just laughed when I read them. It really is awesome to see the "Process" of how his teams "Progress" and we're witnessing it for the first time with this new group of players. Last years team I was very excited about the start of the season, but it was a nervous excitement as I knew all the expectations that came with that team. This years team also has expectations, but I'm excited in a sense that I'm almost giddy about this team because I want to see their obstacles and see them try to overcome them. I just really enjoyed this piece by Mr. Bedore because there are so many unknowns with this team; However on the flip side, Bill Self makes you feel the excitement with his honesty and opinions about his team.

Let's also not forget that our perimeter guys HAVE to be better defenders to keep Cole out of silly foul situations with guys driving until the Morris twins become more adept at help defense. That means the guys that can contain their man (Sherron, Travis, Mario, Tyshawn) will get the lion's share of the minutes outside so that our bigs aren't left exposed.By the way, I am hoping for at least one "this is for the people" dunk from a Morris twin each week.

Somebody above posted Teahan as "as Billy Thomas player" you must be joking???? Billy Thomas is the the NBA, Teahan can shoot but Billy Thomas is a player, and a player with high socks if I may add. Teahan, Reed, and Morningstar are going to have a hard time getting any minutes much beyond what we saw Cole have last year, I like all three of them and thought maybe someday they would get their chance to play real minutes, but we are getting a lot more recruits than I had expected........ I watched the interview that this article was written on, and Bill Self loves Tyshawn Taylor, there is absolutely no way tyshawn taylor doesnt start every game this year, unless it is injury related, this kid is a flat out player, does everything well and is a lightning bolt on the floor, I know you locals love Releford but his best bet is to start over Little not Taylor. One of the twins will come off of the bench to balance the rotation, because if the both start who subs in for Cole? not QT at 6'7, so it is a lock one of the twins comes off of the bench, but i am excited about this year, i see no reason why we couldnt win it all as a 2 or 3 seed. dont sleep on these kids they are going to be a top 10 team. mark my words

I personally think that Aldrich will help make the Morris twins better defenders because of his help defense. Cole is an extremely intimidating presense, even more so than Kaun to me......reason being, I get the feeling that he's more in control (body movement) than Kaun was. We are all expecting a breakout year for Aldrich, and I think we'll get it. He's a phenomenal rebounder and has an eye for the ball. Assuming he can stay out of foul trouble, I bet he will be top 3 in rebounding in the Big 12. I actually think that Cole has the ability to average a double double.Again, I'm so eager to see the season begin. I want to see our new guys. And remember everyone......we just came off a national championship and lost all our starters, plus a top 6 man. Have this in your head......we are going to lose a minimum of 10 games next year!!!We have an extremely tough schedule, and a young team. Hopefully, by tourney time, we'll be in sync.

I find Bill Self's comment about the Morris twins having a knack for scoring extremely encouraging. This means that the twins are scoring against Cole, who is known for his defense being tall and long. Many high school big man can score against under sized/ under talented opponents, but get shut down at the college level facing 7 foot defenders like Cole. So for Bill Self to note the Morris twin's scoring ability after they have been battling Cole is making me extremely happy. We will be a good team by March.

I don't know that we lose ten games, but I definitely think we will lose at least seven or eight. We should still be pretty tough at home, which will insulate us from some loses. On the road, we could lay a few eggs - I'm thinking at OU, at Baylor, maybe at ISU, at KSU or Mizzou, at Arizona. Those games could have us looking kind of bad (remember the 30 point beating we took in Stillwater three or four years ago?). At AFH, we probably won't lose more than once or twice. Maybe Texas comes in and beats us, or A&M. We may drop a non con game early on. We will probably absorb at least one Why-Did-We-Recruit-THESE-Guys game to some random team (like the Oral Roberts loss). We will probably have a random night where we can't score. There will probably be some other random night where we give up 15 layups and Coach Self calls four frustrated timeouts to sub in anybody that can stay in front of a guy. We will get everyone's best shot this year. Each game will make our guys better. And next year, after getting pushed around a little this year, everyone will pay.

The one "advantage" if you can call it that (not sure you can), is simply the fact that OTHER than Cole and Sherron, NO ONE on this team has his "slot" yet.And its pretty apparent its an wide open competition, which I'd hope these guys take as a chance to get minutes.I'd predict by the end of the the 5-6 games the rotation will begin to take shape. As long as its "ready" by Big 12 time, I think thats all we can ask.

Key Questions by Player that Must Be Answered Positively for KU to Have Good Year, Finish Strong and Make the 16 in the Madness:Will Sherron be able to get a J off against a lock down 2 shifted on to him; i.e., can he dribble off screens, or come off screens and get the J off against the other team's best perimeter defender, who will often be much taller? Will Cole get fouling under control this year or next? Will Cole be able to perfect Manning's jump hook, so he can do more than be a garbage man around the basket? Can Releford hit the three when left wide open? Can Taylor hit the three when left wide open?Is Taylor strong enough to defend a true 2, when the switches come? Can Marcus Morris learn to defend 3s and 4s by mid season? Can Markieff Morris learn to defend 4s and 5s by February? Can Markieff Morris stand the violence in the paint, when he only has Aldrich, Thomas and Kleinmann to test him in practice? Can Tyrel Reed, Teahan and Morningstar play enough defense to make their shots matter? Can Quintrell Thomas defend and rebound enough to make his absense of offensive game tolerable even for 10 mpg?Can Tyrone Appleton get well, so that KU can establish a second extremely physical presense on the perimeter at the 1 or 2, when needed? Is Mario Little really a lock down defender at the D1 level ate either the 2 or the 3?If ALL of the questions above were to be answered positively, KU would be a serious threat for post season play?If NONE of the questions above can be answered positively, KU could easily fall to a .500 team.Practice, practice, practice.

A lot of discussion about Teahan, Reed, and some about Morningstar...I really do like Teahan's 3pt pure shot--he could still improve across the board--but how often do you see a 6'5" QB with "footspeed"? Maybe he could be a Steve Kerr-type of role player?? Reed, I personally hope/hoped could become another Kirk Hinrich, but Kirk was on a different team, talent-wise. Morningstar, well...doubtful--isnt he a 5th year player (22 or 23yrs old?), which tells you all you need to know. These guys could be starters at any midmajor. Now--I havent even mentioned the 'starting 7'--that is the level of talent Self is bringing in, or at least raw athleticism. Those guys just come out of the 'box' with more. Listen to Self: all he talks about are the first 7 or 8 players. And he respectfully mentions the bottom of the roster a bit as well...just like the last 4yrs--athleticism and raw talent prevails. As it should: so many more options. Look at last year's team, able to play any style of ball, versatile enough to run offense through several players, and athletic enough for help-defense to erase the occasional mistake. Ask UNC. Our guys made theirs look 1-dimensional and totally exposed the difference between a Roy-coached A+ talent, and a Bill-coached A+ talent. Love it.

Im also amazed at the "53 plays" comment--that explains alot. It shows what type of smarts may be required to run this machine. That helps explain some of what happened in Aaron Mile's senior year--its a lot to ask to learn a new system for only 1 season. It explains why CJ Giles got little playingtime--as Self said at a luncheon: "he had trouble remembering the plays". It casts that much more respect on Russell Robinson to run that show so well the last 2yrs. You guys see my point here? Maybe we are the 'Duke' of the midwest--requiring really heady players to execute all that is asked of them (sorry for that analogy! I dont like Duke really, just respect Coach K...) I guess we will continue to discover the depth and greatness of Bill Self.

Lebowski,If all questions are answered positively, I think they could go deep in the Madness. Positive answers would mean this team would be extremely tough down the central axis of PG and Center; this always makes for a very tough team. Positive answers would mean there would be enough three point shooting to make teams pay big for concentrating on Sherron and Cole. Positive answers would mean there would be enough excellent defenders to play wreak havoc in the passing lanes (aka Self defense) and deny most teams match-up advantages.I agree with you that all positive answers is unlikely. But I think that we have learned with Bill Self that if he just gets 3/4s positive answers he can mask the rest of the weaknesses at least to the 16.But if he were to get all positives, I do think this team a lot of potential match up advantages and sufficient depth to be a threat at year's end.
