Recruit to visit Memphis

Thomas Robinson, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound high school senior power forward from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., will take his second of three official campus visits this weekend.

Robinson, who attended KU's national championship ring banquet on Sept. 19, will travel to the University of Memphis with fellow KU target Xavier Henry. Robinson is slated to visit Southern California on Oct. 17-18.

Memphis coach John Calipari traveled to Washington, D.C., on Monday to visit with Robinson's mom. KU coach Bill Self is slated to visit with Robinson's mom this morning, then travel to New Hampshire to watch Robinson work out tonight.

"It's a good opportunity to visit Memphis so he has something to compare Kansas to. He will probably sit down next week with his mom to discuss the visits," Brewster coach Jason Smith told

Michael Snaer, a 6-4 senior shooting guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., who has visited Missouri, Florida State and Marquette, tells he will visit UCLA this weekend and Kansas for the Oct. 17 Late Night in the Phog.

Does anyone know the dates of the early signing period?

CBaller13 10 years, 9 months ago

I also don't think Memphis can expect to sign all of these players. They signed Tyreke Evans who is a 2 guard last year and there is no guarantee he is leaving. Therefore they have a logjam in the backcourt with him, C.J. Henry, Willie Kemp, Wall, and Henry if they all go there. I think they get Wall or Henry -- not both. Then we have to just hope that Robinson or Orton comes to KU. If Elijah Johnson passes on us I'm sure we can get Snaer or Cheek. Snaer is intriguing because I read somewhere that he is a big time defender and we all know Self loves that stuff.

TYSHAWN TAYLOR IS WAY BETTER THAN MOST OF YOU THINK...he will be a starter at KU from day one, i know you kansas natives are in love with Travis, and dont get me wrong i like him, but he wont start over Tyshawn, there is absolutely no way. I watched the games in Canada and i think Tyshawn Taylor will be a superstar for us in the coming years....On another note everyone needs to forget about Xavier Henry, he is probably rocking memphis gear already around his town, it isnt a big deal we arent going to get him, and we will only have 1 or 2 scholorships available after this year unless sherron or cole leaves early and that is very unlikely. Sherron is 5'11 he isnt going to be a lock first rounder so its not going to happen, and cole is going to go through some ups and downs this year so dont bet on him going pro after this year either.... Expect to see Cole get in alot of foul trouble this year the way he tries to cock-back and swat every shot. Notice how Kaun blocked shots last year, by going straight up to avoid the foul, Cole tries to beat it into the crowd which is exciting, but if you miss its going to be a foul. Starting 5SherronTyshawnMarioMarcus Cole-self already said Tyshawn has a great chance to start at KU from day one, Coach Self never says stuff like that before the season not even last year with Sherron/Russell or Kaun/Jackson so go ahead and bet he is going to be starting not travis.

bmkjayhawk 10 years, 9 months ago

Don't forget Dominic Cheek and Elijah Johnson.

Joe Ross 10 years, 8 months ago

agreed jaybate.i dont see how it could even be a choice...

CBaller13 10 years, 8 months ago

Jason I completely agree. I'm not saying Taylor isn't worthy of starting, I just think he can play the role Sherron used to and come off the bench to spell Travis or Sherron. Releford is the real deal 2 guard and I think he will be a solid starter.

Timmay97 10 years, 9 months ago

How many scholarships could KU potentially have next year? Can we even sign three players? We have Henry, Wall, Orton, Stephenson and Robinson as our primary targets. I think we'll end up with two.....Henry and Orton. If not Henry, then Stephenson. Wall is a dream choice.

Baha 10 years, 9 months ago

I agree crooner, I would be very happy with Cheek, Robinson and Orton... I sounds like Robinson is going to visit Memphis with Xavier... Maybe X and Wall are going to try and pull him to Memphis with them... I believe in Coach Self and in the end we will be fine...

Marcia Parsons 10 years, 9 months ago

Nutflush: I believe Tehan is also a walk-on.

CBaller13 10 years, 9 months ago

BRush - starter from day 1Sherron - should have started from day 1 - better than RussRobWright - starter from day 1Arthur - started some but played minutes like a starterChalmers - starter for most of the seasonThese are all borderline top 20 recruits. I think it is 100% reasonable to think that 2, maybe 3 of the '09 recruits could start because talent wise they are above anything we have other than Cole, Sherron and maybe Marcus.

Lance Hobson 10 years, 9 months ago

There is a reason Sherron was on the court at the end.

jaygirl193 10 years, 9 months ago

NCAA basketball Early Signing Period is November 12-19, 2008. Per Henry has been quoted in several articles saying that Xavier wants to announce his decision before the High School basketball season starts.

justanotherfan 10 years, 8 months ago

Let's look at the bright side on this, folks.Say we split with Memphis on this whole thing. And say we get the lesser of the split, just hypothetically based on the rankings. They get Wall, Henry and Favors. We get Stephenson, Orton and either Cheek, Snaer or Johnson. I doubt anyone sheds a tear for that kind of recruiting class. Granted, they would have the #1 class in the country. But we wouldn't be far behind.

2009 Recruiting trail...Kansas vs. Memphis. I have listed only the recruits who are the top ten at their position.Memphis Recruits:(position rank- Player)1PG- John Wall1SG- Xavier Henry2SG- Kenny Boynton (not considering Kansas)4SG- Lance Stephenson3PF- Renardo Sidney (not considering Kansas)7PF- Thomas Robinson1C- Derrick Favors4C- Rashanti Harris (not considering Kansas)Kansas Recruits:1PG- John Wall5PG- Elijah Johnson (not considering Memphis)1SG- Xavier Henry4SG- Lance Stephenson5SG- Michael Snaer (not considering Memphis)6SG- Dominic Cheek (not considering Memphis)1SF- Jordan Hamilton (not considering Memphis)9SF- Terrence Boyd (not considering Memphis)7PF- Thomas Robinson1C- Derrick Favors3C- Daniel Orton (not considering Memphis)9C- Kyryl Natyazhko (not considering Memphis)This information, together with knowing how many scholarships each team will have to give next year, will help to clarify the recruiting picture.

jaybate 10 years, 8 months ago

jross,What the heck is the matter with Boynton, Sidney and Harris? Don't these guys know the balance of power has shifted in college basketball and that KU is the only serious program left? :-)

Steve Day 10 years, 9 months ago

Early Signing Period is 3 weeks after the start of official practice. This year practice begins Oct 17, so its 3 weeks after that.Rock Chalk!

CBaller13 10 years, 9 months ago

I want Johnson, Henry and Orton/Robinson. That gives us a pg, sf, and c. Insert Releford at 2 and Marcus at 4 and you have a sick starting 5 in 2009-2010. Then, you have Taylor, Little and Markieff coming off the bench. I say we tell Morningstar his scholarship is gone next year. You have to figure Sherron is gone and maybe Cole. That leaves us with 3, maybe 4 scholarships. I say in that scenario we are a final four team in either maybe 2009-2010 or 2010-2011 definately if Henry stays.

KU 10 years, 9 months ago

One of the great things about having more high-quality recruiting targets than we have scholarships is that it may put a little pressure on one or more of them to commit early for fear of missing out on a spot. When is the early signing period?

CBaller13 10 years, 9 months ago

Taylor played for St. Anthony's which had Rosario and Cheek among others. Also, he's a true pg and we already have Sherron who will be playing that role. Releford is a sg, not a sf. I wouldn't exactly say that Marcus is a sf either -- He's a sf/pf a la Julian Wright and I think we have gone that route before. As for Sherron being better than Russell, you are crazy if you think a healthy Sherron isn't better than RussRob. Russell Robinson is a great player and I loved him as our 3rd guard, but in no way was he ever better than Sherron. Sherron was our best player for a good portion of 2006-2007 and has demonstrated that he is on another level when healthy.

CBaller13 10 years, 9 months ago

One last thing. Nolan Dennis, a 6'5" shooting guard in 2009 has already signed with Memphis -- yet another player in their backcourt.

CBaller13 10 years, 9 months ago

the problem with Taylor is that Sherron is the main scorer and Releford is glue guy type. They mesh better. Taylor will definately play a major role. Therefore I think the five will be:SherronRelefordLittleMarcusCole

bryan123456789 10 years, 9 months ago

What do you mean Tyshawn Taylor isnt a glue guy??? He averaged 10pts a game in high school that screams glue guy... why on earth do you think we would play 1PG 3SF and 1C? thats makes zero sense my friend.... Why do you assume Releford is a glue guy? i am not tryin to be an A-hole, but everything about Tyshawn Taylor makes him out to be a glue guy. And why did someone above post Sherron was better than Russell? if he was better he would have started! just becasue you might be better offensively and individually doesnt mean you a better basketball player. There is a reason Russ played over sherron and it wasnt because sherron is better

Jonathan Andrews 10 years, 9 months ago

I wouldn't be a bit disappointed if we "only" ended up with 3 of Johnson, Snaer, Cheek, Robinson and Orton. Wall and Henry are truly special, and we still have at least a chance at a couple of the other 1st-tier prospects. But the 5 I mentioned will probably all be McDonald's All-Americans. It's not as though we're scraping the bottom of the barrel if we whiff on John and/or Xavier.

JNHawks 10 years, 8 months ago

wo, Russ Rob was a better all around player than Sherron, better defender, better distributer, better team player (at least last season), that is why he started. Sherron was in at the end because Russ was having trouble with the very talented Memphis team. We all know Sherron made probably the best play of the game with the steal and 3, but lets not say anything bad about Russel, he was one of our many keys to success the last 3 years!

Nutflush21 10 years, 9 months ago

LJ World Staff- Can you update us on the number of scholarships KU has to give? The only senior on this years squad is a walk-on... With a total of 13 scholarhips to give, Im assuming that Kleinman, Teahan and Morningstar are on scholarship this year with Buford and Bechard as the walk-ons. I guess thats potentially 3 scholarships KU can allocate elsewhere if needed.

Timmay97 10 years, 9 months ago

This is an interesting article. guys think that both Wall and Henry are going to Memphis. That's insane! I think our recruiting class this year killed us in getting both, but I still think we'll get one of them. We got Rush, didn't we?

mbmerriman 10 years, 9 months ago

i hate it when people assume that our new recruits will just step in and start day one, that never happens, you have to be a truly special player to start from day one, assuming we get Robinson, Cheek, and Orton our starting lineup in 2009 will most likely only players capable of starting for KU from day one are wall and henry

bmkjayhawk 10 years, 9 months ago

Anybody know what the article about Wall on Rivals has to say?

CBaller13 10 years, 9 months ago

all I can get out of it is that he enjoyed his visit here but I figure that's the typical response after a recruit makes a visit. One thing I think helps us with Wall is his similarity to Sherron Collins. Both haven't lived an easy life and hopefully Coach Self can give John Wall what he has given Sherron.

Drew Bender 10 years, 8 months ago

There is a reason RussRob was named Mr. Jayhawk two or three out of four years at KU... Cant remember who got it this year but you know what i mean

To all the handwringers regarding Henry, Wall, et al, if it seems implausible that these players would go to Memphis instead of KU, then it probably is.To borrow a Lebowskism, take a chill pill. Oh, and wash it down with a White Putin--same as White Russian but with GEORGIAN vodka, instead of Smirnoff, plus the usual coffee liqueur (e.g., Kahlða or Tia Maria), and cream served in an old-fashioned glass with ice.Losing out on some of them means little, except that Coach Cal is part of the legacy and its inevitable Memphis gets some of them.If we do lose them all, we can be sure that there are some incentives that are not being discussed openly yet.

CBaller13 10 years, 8 months ago

If Tyreke Evans stays another year at Memphis, both Henry and Wall would not start. I just have a feeling as though we are going to get one or the other. I also think if we get Wall, we also get Cheek and Robinson or Cheek and Orton. If we get Henry, I can see us getting Orton and Elijah Johnson. Time will tell. The Hansbrahs didn't go to the same school. The Carrolls didn't go to the same school. The Capels didn't go to the same school. If for some reason we lose out on both, I would be perfectly happy with Snaer, Cheek and Orton/Robinson. That's still 3 top 20 recruits.

bmkjayhawk 10 years, 8 months ago

Does anyone know much about Snaer? Some say he's a lean to stay in California and either go to UCLA or Stanford.

Joe Ross 10 years, 8 months ago

You know...I just looked at the bottom left of this website. Take a moment and look for yourself. Do you see "2003, 2004, and 2007 EPpy Award Winner"? Well congratulations are in order to the Lawrence Journal World, who was mentioned alongside such publications as the New York Times and People magazine for being one of the best online publications in 2008! to all of you who constantly rail against the LJW and its writers, guess what: youre idiots! And once again, "thank you" to the LJW for providing this forum from at least ONE grateful viewer.

Joe Ross 10 years, 8 months ago

um...and the LJW CONTINUES to kick butt! just won the 2008 "Best overall Newspaper website" award" (for its circulation size)....NATIONALLY!For those of you who come on here talking about how terrible the columnists are, beware: Ill expose your naivete.CONGRATS AGAIN, LAWRENCE JOURNAL WORLD!!!!

Speaking of recruiting classes...Top recruiting classes of 2004 (and the highest rated player that school signed)1. Kentucky 2. Kansas 3. Texas 4. Indiana 5. UCLA 6. Oregon7. Louisville 8. Florida 9. Memphis 10. Alabama Now let's rerank those programs based on how they did.1. (8) Florida - two titles in four years. 2. (5) UCLA - three Final Fours in four years.3. (2) Kansas - one title overcomes the two first round losses.4. (9) Memphis - two Elite Eights, one title game5. (3) Texas - two Elite Eights, two first weekend exits6. (7) Louisville - a FF, an E8, an early loss and an NIT. A little of everything.7. (1) Kentucky - made every tournament, but didn't do much other than the E8 as freshmen.8. (4) Indiana - four postseasons (NIT, three first weekend exits)9. (10) Alabama - Three postseasons (NIT, two first weekend exits)10. (6) Oregon - Two tournaments, but two complete flameouts.I'm sure the folks in Lexington, Bloomington, Tuscaloosa and Eugene want to know where their return on top 10 recruiting classes went.

jasonsgill 10 years, 8 months ago

I think Tyshaun Taylor will play the role Sherron has the past few years and be the first off the bench at both the 1 and the 2, if you've seen him play you understand that he would be an ideal change of pace pick me up guy. I would expect him to get similar minutes as Releford and possibly Sherron. I think he has exceeding talent, but it's very difficult to pass up a 6'6 guy who can play the 2 in Releford and who would come in posing match up problems. As for the 3 I think Mario Little has too much talent to come off the bench. And he similarly will pose a lot of match up problems with his ability to play inside out. I think the 4 is tough to finger, but I would guess the better of the Morris twins. Finally Cole at 5.By the end of the year my guess would be:SherronTravisMarionMarcus (or Markieff I'm not straight on them yet)Colewith Tyshaun as a surefire 6th man and the other morris twin likely 7. I think 8 will depend on who progresses the most. Same with the 4th guard.

Dirk Medema 10 years, 8 months ago

Lebowski - Didn't Hairston also talk about Carmelo-izing Oregon (vs. joining KU)? Hehehe. Lovng to LMAO on that one.I believe Wall has said that he will wait until late (?Spring?) to announce where he is going. As the number 1 PG, and with a history of so many plyers/coaches leaving programs, that sounds really smart to me. He'll have a great offer regardless.IMO Sherron only lacks a bit of control in his game leadership. I think it is written all over his face in the interviews at the end of the NC game. He knows he had the chance to seal the deal in regulation by running the clock, when instead he attacked and turned the ball over. This is where Colison and other PG's (need) to excell. I look for Sherron to make a huge leap in this regards this year, and then join a weak '09 guard draft. When Sherron leads a very young KU deep into March then leaves, it sets the perfect stage for Wall coming to KU in '09.

jaybate 10 years, 8 months ago

dagger108,Can't say yet about the ring, but Sherron be gone fo' sho come spring.
