2008 KU-MU football

— Saturday’s 40-37 loss to Kansas University might have had an effect on many of the Missouri players, but MU quarterback Chase Daniel didn’t want to be included in that bunch.

Shortly after the game, Daniel was asked if it would be difficult to recover from the loss.

“(It’s) not hard at all, for the fact of, hey, we’re in the (Big 12) championship game,” Daniel said matter-of-factly. “Not Kansas, not Kansas State, not Baylor. No one else. We’re in the championship game.

“So would we have liked to keep the momentum up and go in? Yeah, sure. It’s a big week, a championship week.”

Because the Tigers clinched the Big 12 North title before Saturday’s game, they will return to Arrowhead Stadium next weekend to face the Big 12 South representative.

Daniel seemed certain that a loss to his team’s biggest rival wouldn’t linger.

“We’ll right ourselves tonight,” Daniel said. “There’s no 24-hour rule about this. It’s getting over it as soon as you can, because if you don’t, you’re going to get embarrassed by a great team from the South.”

Other Tigers seemed more disheartened by the defeat.

Junior linebacker Sean Weatherspoon stood stunned on the sideline after the game while KU players celebrated on the field.

“I didn’t know what was going on. It was just disbelief that it happened the way it did,” Weatherspoon said. “It’s just something I’m not used to. I’ve never lost to Kansas.

“Today was just a shocking feeling because those guys, they think about us all season, and we think about them all season. At the end of the season, we get together, and they got the best of us today. It’s just disbelief.”

MU receiver Tommy Saunders also wasn’t hiding his disappointment.

“It’s doesn’t matter if you go 0-10 — you want to beat Kansas,” Saunders said. “It really hurts to lose against them, but they’re a good team.”

With a 37-33 lead, MU had a chance to win the game at the end, as KU faced a fourth-and-seven at the MU 26 with 33 seconds left.

The Tigers went with an all-out blitz, but KU quarterback Todd Reesing was able to avoid the rush before finding Kerry Meier in the end zone for the game-deciding, 26-yard touchdown.

“We brought a lot of guys,” MU coach Gary Pinkel said. “One of our safeties came later than we would have liked. That’s just executing.

“I thought it was a good call. I’ve been doing this a long time. When it’s a good call and it works, it’s a good call. It went through me, and I knew they were doing it. I thought it was a good call.”

Pinkel also bemoaned an errant call by the officials. In the final minute, Meier caught a pass, but as he turned upfield, his knee hit the ground.

Officials ruled he had stayed on his feet, and the clock was stopped after Meier ran out of bounds.

MU challenged the play and had it overturned, but KU was able to snap the ball quickly when the clock restarted after the stoppage in play.

Had the clock continued running, KU might have lost 10-20 valuable seconds.

“That didn’t help,” Pinkel said. “That was a really critical call, because that clock runs, and they would have had to use a timeout. That was huge when you’re fighting for every second and trying to pressure the offense.

“But, things like that happen. There are a lot of other things that can happen in a football game that affect the outcome more than that.”

Wow. Just another reason to dislike Missouri. Instead of congratulating the Jayhawks, he's whining about a bad call??The bad call was the challenge you bonehead. You gave us precious time to gather ourselves and catch a breath so you could prove a point? What a bonehead! And, if I am not mistaken we lost a yard and a half and gained 2 seconds on the clock. Gee coach, you were right, thank you so much.Chase Daniel is a punk as well. He sure fits the Missouri mold well.Maybe the sweetest win in the most entertaining, heart stopping game I have ever watched.Great to be a Jayhawk!! Love this team!!7-5 is just huge compared to the alternative.

Man, I don't know about the rest of ya guys but if College had a sport that was based on Whining, I definitely wouldn't want to face Missouri. They'd have to be ranked number one. Seems like they have the recruitment of whiners down pat. It just amazes me that they can't admit that the better team won. Mangino just needs to keep on doing what he has been doing. Finding them really coachable kids who appreciate what it means to be a Jayhawk and play the game with class and dignity and don't whine about every downturn or bad call that comes there way. Let's go Jayhawks and win whatever Bowl game is thrown our way. rock chalk!!!!!!!!!

Has Mizzou EVER lost a game and not blamed it on the refs? I was there, and while the Meier call MAY have been controversial, the refs did an awesome job of letting these two teams play without dictating the outcome very much. Classless Tiggers, Daniel and Pinkel, can kiss my ass. When Gary rolls up to Seattle and finally gets to go home, he can whine to Pac 10 refs instead of Big XII ones.Good job KU. You deserved it, and you are the better team, with no premadonna whiny biotches like Daniel who have scrotums on their chin like Peter Griffin on Family Guy.rcjhku!rhfho!

I can't believe Pinkie is such an idiot. The one yard they gained with the challenge doesn't begin to compensate for the free time out he gave us. It's HIS fault, nobody else's!

Okay, let's think about this before we open our sore loser mouth, Pinkel? The refs get that call right, the clock keeps running, and instead of scoring with :27 left, we score with less than 10 seconds left and maybe your sorry Tiggers don't even get that field goal attempt. Bottom line is, in the end, that call helped both KU AND Fizzou, buuuut, I guess when you are a sore loser and grasping at straws, any excuse will work, right?

Doesn't Pinkle realize that we might not have called a time out? We left them, what, 30 seconds for their last drive? We still had plenty of time to score and I know coach would have loved to leave as little on the clock as possible. If the right call was made, they may have had only enough time for a Hail Mary.

McCoy is in fact a junior, but also made a well-documented decision to file "exploratory paperwork" to see what his draft stock is. In a league in which Tyler Thigpen and that guy on the 49ers (name escapes me) are starting at QB, McCoy will be a 1st round pick and is as good as gone.

You're talking about Alex Smith, who was the first pick in the draft and looks pretty bad at this point. On the other hand, if the Niners had picked Aaron Rodgers instead, ... never mind, they're still the Niners of today, not the '80s and '90s.

I have to agree with the fans here--all more astute than Pinkel--that the challenge to the bang-bang judgement call was unbelievably stupid. At full speed, it was easy to miss, and even if ruled down, Todd would have made a play or called timeout anyway. There was plenty of clock at that point. But a challenge can't guess at how much time might have run off the clock, since KU could have called an immdiate T.O. It was a weird and whiny thing to do. Meier had the greatest game in one-legged KU history. He kept getting open on guts alone--MU never respected his gimpy speed. Can't say as I blame them.

What I found funny was the that Pinkel OK'd the blitz at the end and challenged the play where Meier's knee touched the ground which gave us extra time to talk about plays. These were his decisions. But he blamed his safety for blitzing late. I like how he threw his safety under the bus. I can't wait to see how bad a coach he really is when his offensive coordinator gets hired by another school to be their head coach.

Daniel has no shot in the NFL. He's a good college QB when there is no pressure on him. In the NFL he will have pressure all the time. He panics under pressure. The hell with him anyway. Enjoy getting trounced by OU then having a good game against a mid level Big 10 team.Have I missed Keegan's ratings?

Unfazed my *ss. His response clearly demonstrates otherwise. This kid should know how to lose big games by now. He's experienced a number of them. OU "take three" will be no different. He'll finish off a MU career with record passig numbers earned not by his arm but by the legs of his receivers after they catch his 5 yard dump passes. This is the most overrated player in all of college football and he will finish with all of Tiger Nation wanting what they never got.

he gave us a full minute by challenging that call (like an official in real time can see a knee grazing the ground when the player keeps running full speed like Meier did). Of course our guys had a chance to get up to the line after he challenged it! Duh. He also should remember KU TD came with 30 secs or so left. And he's complaining about "10 or 20" seconds? AFTER a challenge? The deciding play would have still occurred, Mr. MU coach, aka "Coach Penis Breath". So what CPB is really saying is this:"i'm dissapointed that we lost to KU, but i'm more disappointed in the officials: How could the officials NOT see that Meier's knee was down in real time? It cost us the game."

I lke that, refering to Mizzu as "the slavers". As for you, Mr. Daniels, sorry you didn't go to the NFL last year. You got suckered into staying another year so that your stock could go up. Well, I think there might have been a stock crash. Hope that Maclin learns from your mistake. You had a great year last year and blew it. Now, you will get embarrassed by OU, probably lose a bowl game and where is that going to take you? Canada? Europe? Macklin, leave before you ruin your life.
