KU vs. Missouri
Kansas City, Mo. With Missouri University standout and national all-purpose-yardage leader Jeremy Maclin on the field during Saturday’s Border War matchup at Arrowhead Stadium, there was a good chance fans would be treated to a standout performance by an electric, do-it-all performer.
And they were.
It just wasn’t Maclin.
In addition to catching nine passes for 115 yards and a touchdown, KU sophomore receiver Dezmon Briscoe replaced struggling kick returner Marcus Herford and returned seven kicks for 195 yards — a 28-yard average — to finish with a game-high 310 all-purpose yards and emerge as an impressive special-teams weapon.
“I made some personnel changes a couple of weeks ago that I thought were good, and then the return (team) didn’t have rhythm,” said Kansas coach Mark Mangino, whose team entered the game last in the nation in kickoff returns. “So then I just felt that we needed to change the return man, too, and it ended up being good for us.”
Briscoe’s surprising effort — he never had returned kicks during his time at Kansas — gave the Jayhawks some of the best field position they’ve had all season and helped set the tone for quarterback Todd Reesing’s 375-yard, four-touchdown performance.
“(They) told me that I could be the starting kickoff returner,” said Briscoe, who said the move came about after he was messing around with the kick-return unit after a recent practice. “It’s a great honor to get back there and just do what I can do.”
In a reversal of roles, meanwhile, Herford was part of one of the game’s biggest plays, catching a 31-yard pass late in the fourth quarter that set up an eight-yard Kansas touchdown one play later that gave the Jayhawks a 33-30 lead.
It was Herford’s first catch of the season and one that Mangino said illustrated the team-first mentality of Herford, who was a preseason all-Big 12 selection at kick returner.
“He’ll be the first to admit that things weren’t great on that kickoff return,” Mangino said of Herford. “Nobody was more disappointed than him. ... Give the kid credit. Instead of pout, he goes out and makes a play in the final drive of the game.”
As for the kick-returner position, however, it looks as if Briscoe will be handling those duties heading into Kansas’ yet-to-be-determined bowl game.
Despite sustaining a harsh blow during a return late in the game, Briscoe said Saturday that he’s more than willing to proceed as the team’s top return man.
And his coach didn’t seem to have much problem with that.
“The only thing is we’re running Dezmon kind of thin,” said Mangino. “But he’ll have some time to rest before our next game, so he’ll be OK.”

It's incredible to think that with the season Briscoe is having, he may not even make second-team All Big XII. In any other conference, he'd most likely be first team.

With all this talk of Micheal Crabtree it is Briscoe who is put on the back burner. This kid is amazing and deserves to be all big 12 this year!!!!

Is there a diagram somewhere about the players shifting positions (e.g., Dez to KR, Patterson to DB)? I think it is awesome but cannot remember all the changes.

If I am not mistaken, it appears that Briscoe, Meier, Reesing, Sharp, the two tackles {Hatch and Spikes} Quigley,Patterson, Dedeaux will be back on offense plus a couple of hot frosh redshirts I am guessing. Scoring won't be the problem next year if the interior OLine can be rebuilt-RG,C,LG all seniors this year.Defense may be the problem losing a DE, all three LB,s and a CB.It finally took the Mizzou game for the linebacking corp to play up to expectations, so watch out for this group next year.

Meier redshirted his first year, so he is only a jr.If Patterson moves back to WR from CB, it would only be because Kande beats him out as a true freshman. Otherwie, he is back with Thornton @ CB. We lose Resby from the DB's, and the rarely used Harper. There is a crew of sophs waiting to take over at both OL and LB's.DE isn't a huge concern to me, tho it would have been less if Young had stayed committed. My guess is the DE play will improve as the DT's improve and demand more attention from OL's.Grooming the players to replace next year's seniors could be the much greater challenge. In the meantime, let's just revel in the Border victory, and appreciate the extra month of practice for the team, assuming they heal enough in the next couple weeks to take advantage of it.

Oakville:I believe Dedeaux is a Sr. He's rarely used anyway. I think the TE you're thinking of Biere. He's gonna be a stud.

Herford may not of had as good of a season in kickreturns, however when you come into the season as Preseason All America, have already broke the school record, and yes again leading the nation in kickreturn yards, you are a threat to all of big 12 that says everything, however (not) being utilized on wide receiver, like God knows he should of been obviously he has the hands and the speed inspite of he kept his head up high did not pout, and still is making big plays for the team, I am glad he and Briscoe are good teammates, there is only one bowl game left to play you guys, keep making it happen, but I do feel Briscoe is a target to get pounded, maybe should not do (every) return, so he will still be able to be at his best at wide receiver, trust me on this one, once the other team gets wind that Briscoe is doing both positions they are going to try like hell to take his legs off of his body, Coach Magino really needs to think about that. Utilize him wisely. Herford I will see you in the 2009 Draft! Keep the good work up!

Bris-coe! Bris-coe! was the chant coming out of the student section (KU Endzone) and it was well deserved. Dez and the return team changed the game, giving the offense something it hasn't had in our losses: field position. Props to the entire team, coaching staff, and loyal fans who got out to the game and surely will never forget it. Rock Chalk.

I agree with with you jhawker_87, I still say hopefully he can be rotated on some of the returns, so he is not so targeted, I mean let's not get the guy killed out there , so he can last the entire game, especialy since he is one of our star wide receivers

Briscoe is our most talented offensive player, our only Sunday guy on that side of the ball right now. When Briscoe is involved and getting touches, we can be dangerous offensively (see OU game) against the elite teams. I think we would have a better return game, but Mangino seems to really micro manage his returners, which hurts their confidence. That's not meant as a huge criticism, since Mangino is far and away the most successful KU football coach ever, but you have to admit that we have had guys show flashes and then disappear after a bad game.
