Fans cheer during Kansas University's game against Missouri on Nov. 24, 2007, at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. Kansas and Missouri certainly did their part to close the gap in the Big 12, as the Jayhawks and Tigers played in the most high-profile conference football game of 2007.

KU, MU extend KC deal
This weekend is the Border War between KU and Mizzou at Arrowhead Stadium, and that's where the rivalry will stay until 2012.
Opinions differ on KU-MU Arrowhead deal
Everyone has an opinion about the location of the KU-Missouri football game.
Kansas and Missouri have extended their deal to play their annual football game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.
Kansas Athletics, the Kansas City Chiefs and the University of Missouri announced Thursday that they have agreed to conduct the annual Border War at the stadium for the next four years, from 2009 to 2012. Kansas will be host for the game in 2009 and 2011, while Missouri will be the "home" team in 2010 and 2012.
Thursday's announcement does not include information about financial compensation or other responsibilities, as the parties have not yet signed a contract, said Jim Marchiony, an associate athletics director at Kansas.
"We're still working out the final details," he said.
But the agreement is a commitment that the games will, in fact, be played off campus for the next four years.
"This agreement enables the University of Kansas to bring a game to the back yard of its largest alumni base," Lew Perkins, Kansas athletics director, said in a statement. "It is an outstanding opportunity to showcase this great rivalry on a terrific national stage. In addition, it gives our players the experience of competing in one of the NFL's premier stadiums - an experience they will never forget."
Last season, KU and Missouri moved their game to Arrowhead for the first time. That was KU's "home" game, which pitted the undefeated and No. 2-ranked Jayhawks against Missouri, which at the time had one loss and was ranked No. 4 nationally.
Missouri won the game, 36-28. Attendance was listed at 80,537, ranking it No. 2 on the stadium's all-time list.
This season's game, a Missouri "home" game, is set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Arrowhead. Missouri already has clinched the Big 12 North title, and will play in the Big 12 championship game, also at Arrowhead. Kansas, at 6-5, is bowl eligible.

dittoI know some people are for this game and some people are against it, and I can see both sides of the story. However,Don't you think it would be nice if the administration would ask for a vote from the fans as to whether or not we wanted to have this game at Arrowhead? We're all being asked to put our own vehicles at risk to go to a stadium with 40,000 Missouri fans that would think nothing of slashing my tires, breaking out my windows, etc..., yet my opinion was not asked as to whether I was willing to foot the bill for it when it happens.Splitting up the parking lots will help some, but this isn't like the OU/Texas game where the fanbases have a mutual respect for each other's programs and most of the fans can leave the game on the field. Missouri's fans simply do not understand what a classy fanbase is, and are unwilling to try to change. I hear the same excuse time and again from their fans on the message boards,.The difference that they don't take into account is how the fanbases react when bad fans do stupid things. Several years ago some idiot took it upon himself to slash the tires of a bunch of Nebraska fans. Instead of making excuses for this guy our fanbase reacted appropriately by being embarrassed by our idiotic fan. Once the moron in question realized that he wasn't a hero, the incident has not been repeated by anyone in years.I guess my point is that everything about this game looks like a positive decision when you're riding in a limo to the game and sitting in a pressbox full of mature adults. Even if Lew were to drive his own vehicle to the game and park it near some Missouri fans, he would be able to easily pay for any damage that they caused because he's a wealthy person. I don't happen to be made of money, and this decision seems to be out of touch with an average fan like myself.

Very, very disappointing. College games, especially a rivalry like this one, should stay on campus where there is a home field advantage to be had. Designating one team as the home team at Arrowhead is meaningless. It cost us the North Championship last year.

It is all about the $$$. KU is a poor schoole in the Big XII and needs more revenue streams/ This helps us get closer to MU spending as KU Memorial is much smaller than MU stadium. We gain more net $$$ than MU does at Arrowhead when you look at the net increase in attendance and compensation.I don't like it but it provides KU a subtle advantage on MU.

This is VERY disheartening and frustrating, I wish my university valued the sentiments of its fans, both kansans and alums, to allow our University to play our home games in our state. Also, the athletic dept is not putting our football team in a better position to win. We will never have a majority of fans at this game (last year as the home team it was conservatively 55% MU fans). I do hope I am wrong about the attendance disparity, but if we couldnt do it with the team we had last year I don't see us doing it over the next 5 years. BEWARE, just wait until they get a hold of MU/KU basketball and move it to the Sprint center.

I'll bet if we would go back to the days of Ted Owens and Terry Allen, you "die hard" Jayhawk fans would be the only ones in the stands to watch our Jayhawks lose 69-7 to Nebraska again for the 30th year in a row. Fortunately, (or unfortunately for you "rapid" Jayhawk fans who probably don't contribute a dime) Lew Perkins is taking Kansas into the 21st century as a winner. You want the game in Lawrence, then try attending games when the team is 2-10. The Mizzou game hadn't been a sell out in years. The football team wasn't worth crap. Now we are winning, people are going to the games, we are on television regularly and our program is no longer the laughing stock of division 1. Lew Perkins is the best thing that has ever happened to Kansas University athletics. Unfortunately, he has to try and work with self centered, ignorant people like you folks who talk big, don't contribute and bitch like champions. Wake up, being competitive is fun. Its too bad that division 1 athletics has turned into a business, but it has. If you don't like it, Washburn is just down the road. They have a nice division II program in football and basketball, they play all their games at home (don't think of going to Pittsburg State for God's sake, they play their biggest rivalry game at Arrowhead as well) and they have great seats available. There are lots of places to go and not spend money, but if you want to be a division 1 fan with any chance of winning, you're going to have to deal with what makes money. KU-MU at Arrowhead makes sense. Money wise and recruiting kids who want to play big time football. We are lucky to have Lew Perkins. There is a reason he is one of the most respected ADs in the business. And believe me, college sports IS a business! Accept it or find a new division II or III team to support. But what ever you do, STOP bitching, you sound like a bunch of cry babies.

I was there last year. Getting to the stadium was bad. Getting into the parking lot was bad. Getting into a parking spot was bad. The cold weather was fine because I would sit through worse to watch my Jayhawks. Getting into the gate was bad. The drunken fans were bad. The ushers doing more to instigate a fight than prevent one was bad. The dirty tigger that yelled we got "F***ing exposed" in my ear was almost a night in jail bad. I am to passionate about my team and too old to go to jail. This game will come with my season ticket next year (13 years in a row and driving 3.5 hrs). So Lew while you are in your heated suite away from the jerks that surrounded me last year ( at our home game, what a joke) you can count your money but count me out.

I don't like this trend in college football. It should be played on a college campus. I think the fans have every right to be disappointed especially when it jeopardizes a home-field advantage that could translate to a win. Would KU have won at home last year? I think so. What would that have done for the program? You talk about the money being important alone but what if it cost you a shot at minimum of playing for a conference championship and possibly a national championship game, and possibly a national championship. How can you put a price on that?????????????????

You want to go to arrowhead for a game? How about the K-state game? Or why not all our "home" games? This reminds me of after Glen Mason had a good season he goes out and schedules Florida State for the first game of the season and we get killed. You build up the program on winning, not revenue. At some point when the program is ready then you make these kinds of decisions. Winning fills stadiums. If KU was getting murdered every year at Errohead, we are getting embarrassed on tv and we make money only because Mizzu fans are filling the seats, I ask any reasonable fan, do we continue the money making when it costs so much?

Speaking as a season ticket holder through way too many of those 2-10 seasons, I agree without hesitation that this "deal" gives MU a distinct advantage. I'm very disappointed in this decision. I agree that Lew has been good for the university, but there has to come a time where tradition is more important than money. If that makes me a crybaby, so be it. I've paid my dues as a Jayhawk fan and I deserve to see them play MU at home, which is not Arrowhead.

Mainly due to our increased footbal attendance, and our new basketball seating priority. We do not need these games in Arrowhead. it puts KU at a distinct competitive disadvantage...because it eliminates our home atmosphere. somebody else pointed out above that winning builds revenuse bases....and that's exactly right. you can play these games like this AFTER you're a football power...and we're not there yet. the program is still being built. We are 0-2 at Arrowhead, since we've been playing these games with our schedule...(OU in '05, and MU last year) and we're likely to be 0-3. Unless the money is a gargantuan increase....like $2 to 3 million...then it's not worth it. this decision is a total disaster if we don't win this game at least this year or next year.Money is necessary to be competitive....but you leverage that thru your own means AND winning programs...because then more fans want to see you play. we have a big time basketball program, we play in a big time league...and we're selling out our home football games....we don't need the money that bad!!!!!! we haven't played MU as the last game of the year in Lawrence since 1993...and it looks like now we never will again. it's a very sad day in KU athletics history....very sad.

Some of you people really amaze me. Many of these excuses, errrr reasons, you give are just flat out lame. For the last time, you people need to get over last year. Nobody, and I mean absolutely nobody, could have predicted KU would be 11-0, and for that matter MU being 10-1, coming into that game. Total coincidence that it happened the first year the game was in KC.There were some comments earlier in the week regarding the OU-Texas game, the Florida-Georgia game. Seems to work out pretty well for them on neutral fields. Yeah I know they have been doing it longer, but come on you have to start somewhere. We can make this game as good as those in time, and we will get more exposure in the process, something we all want. We could also make this a real sports weekend in KC, and schedule a doubleheader at Sprint Center Friday night before the game, and have KU & MU each play a high profile team. For those of you saying that MU will have home field advantage all years, it will be that way only if KU fans allow it to happen. How you ask? One, not buying enough of our allotment, even past season ticket holder purchases. Two, KU people who buy tickets but then sell out to someone. You are putting our tickets at risk to an MU fan by selling out like that in hopes you make a quick buck. Those people are not real KU fans - hope your extra $40 is worth having an MU fan in our section.People we can make this game to our advantage. We have the bigger alumni base in KC. We should be the ones buying up their tickets, not the other way around, regardless of who the better team is. It is a new era of KU football. Jayhawk Nation needs to suck it up and take over this town. Those of you that want to bitch and moan about where the game is either need to get with the program and be supportive of our football program regardless of having to drive an extra 30 miles, or just go sit on the couch and yearn for the old days when we got beat merceilessly every other week. One more thing, I said earlier in the week that as long as this game is in KC, it should be made part of the season ticket package every year. I was told this was actually considered for this year's game. We will have a lot of people there any way, so why not include it. Will guarantee more KU people in the seats (assuming they don't sell out, see above). If you are a season ticket holder, what's one more game every other year when most should be there any way.Everyone be supportive and let's make this a KU benefit. Rock Chalk!

It seems the opposition to the games being played in Arrowhead break into several categories:1) "It takes away our home advantage." Are you kidding me? Have you been to a home game in Lawrence? It's hardly a lion's den for the opponent. KU fans are not good football fans, period. They don't make enough noise to create a home advantage. It's embarrassing.2) "Getting into Arrowhead is inconvenient." Try leaving home earlier.3) "Missouri fans are mean and they might key my car." Park your car and ride the bus.4) "It's not tradition to play in KC." Huh? For many years, the game was played in KC. 5) "KU will never have as many fans there as MU." Buy tickets and go to the game instead of whining and KU WILL have as many fans as MU.

4) "It's not tradition to play in KC." Huh? For many years, the game was played in KC.not true. i would say 1920....eight generations ago....was the last year it was regularly played in KC. that hardly qualifies as any "tradition."this is where the tradition is....campus games. how could alabama-auburn, ohio st.-Mich., etc. etc....play games at a neutral site. It's just not right....i don't care what you say. This game is supposed to be on campus...period. it's where all of our classic upsets and big victories have been ...regardless of where the game is.quote from above: "It takes away our home advantage." Are you kidding me? Have you been to a home game in Lawrence?uh....of course. the better question is, have you been to a home game vs. MU in Lawrence? the last year the game wasn't competitive in Lawrence was 1988..and of course, it may have been our worst team ever. Terry Allen went 2-1 in Lawrence vs. MU....2-1!! We have a huge advantage in Memorial Stadium....vs. the Tigers. we are 7-2 in Memorial Stadium since '88.....and 10-4 the last 14. and that's a lot of bad KU teams....that have somehow prevailed against tough 'ol Mizzou. We win the game tomorrow, and next year....and then it's fine...i'll come over. but until we consistently win this game...it's a terrible idea.

mv, I hate to break it to you, but MU wasn't very good for most of the past 25 years. TA going 2-1 vs. MU in Lawrence wasn't like we were dominating a program like OU or Texas. While we weren't very good most years either, I think we had more winning seasons than Mizzou did.The first 16 years of the rivalry were played in KC so KC is the roots of the rivalry and is obviously where it's going to be for some time. The reality is we outnumber MU alums 3:1 in KC and closer to 5:1 in the region. If you're proud to abandon our football program against our most hated rival, congratulations! It's mediocre fan support like that is why our football program has historically struggled. The rest of us that are going will lose our voices supporting the team and will hopefully support the Hawks onto a victory.

Good old Jim Marchingformoney says that this is an opportunity for KU fans in the area of the largest alumni base to see "their" Hawks play. If these lazy ass JoCo fans can't take 40 minutes to drive to Larryville...they WILL show dedication in heading to Arrowhead? Not sure I get the logic on that one. But since it is now a done deal...and will NEVER return to the respective campuses...I have a few questions for Jim and Lew, or is it Lew and Jim?1. Will a 30 yard line "priority point" seat remain in the endzone or upper deck of Arrowhead? (BTW: How much did KU lose pissing off the donors last year?)2. Will Carl STAFF that crap hole?3. If one game at Arrowhead is "good" shouldn't we sinply move ALL of them to KC? Afterall, the Chiefs fans might actually want to see some real football each weekend. In all honesty, If I wanted to "experience" Arrowhead...I'd have been purchasing Chief season tickets for the past 35 years.I'll always follow my GRID Hawks..even straight into hell....but why would I want to do that EVERY year instead of every other?

Where you fit into that picture isn't for me to know or decide, as your words are all I have to go by.And as for the doubts you expressed, I will admit that you have probably been to a few more games than I in the last couple of years. However, I will gladly compare the total amount of mileage driven/flown to get to those games any time. Prior to that, though, I would also be happy to compare atrocities seen, both home and away.Aside from the personal attacks either way, I will respectfully (truly) disagree with two of your reasons for opposition. In regards to tradition, what tradition? The only tradition I can think of is the mere fact of rotating games on campus, as anything else would just fall under the category of "recent trend". As for advantage, yes, KU would most likely benefit more from playing in Memorial. But that said, the only reason for that is too many choose to occupy seats in front of their televisions rather than in Arrowhead. If more would have joined you and I at the game, that kind of advantage could have been created. And remember, the 50,000 that would be packed into Memorial is yet another of those "recent trends", as you know from going to all those games.

So let me get this straight. Some of you keep complaining that you are season ticket holders that were surrounded by "drunken Mizery fans". How is that Lew's fault? The tickets that you bought were either part of the season ticket package, or bought from the KU ticket office. Which means......A) Those other season ticket holders sold their tickets to the "drunken Mizery fans" for a "quick buck" (the same quick buck you demonize Lew for)...orB) KU fans did not buy our allotment, so they end up in the hands of "drunken Mizery fans"Apparently the "drunken Mizery fans" were more resouceful and more passionate about supporting their team. Maybe if more KU fans quit complaining and actually support the team in good times as well as bad times, at home as well as away or "neutral" fields, then maybe , just maybe we could make this thing an advantage for our Hawks.Yes, I went to the game last year and except for the outcome, I had a good time (although it was pretty damn cold). We had good seats and I was not surrounded by Mizery fans, so that probably made it better. We left at a reasonable time, got there fine and had a nice tailgate and my car did not get damged.I may not always agree with the decisions of the athletic department, but I cannot control them, so I will control what I can.. my actions and my support. I will always support the Jayhawks.... even if we were playing in Africa.

Tradition in Memorial Stadium??????????????????Please. When you set an all time record for home attendance during a 12-1 season at 5,000 under capacity, I have one heck of a time calling THAT tradition. Yes, I was there for the '98 KSU game and for ALL of those God forsaken Nebraska games where the KSU and Nebraska fans outnumbered us in our own damn stadium. Arrowhead can't possibly be worse than that. The day we have an 80,000 seat stadium on campus in Lawrence will be the same year you same bunch of cry babies bitch about parking and driving in Lawrence.Think about it, we are having a cow as fans and the Jayhawks are heading for their 3rd bowl game in 4 years. Have qualified for a bowl 4 years in a row and are coming off the greatest sports year in Kansas history. And we are bashing the AD. You guys are fricking unbelievable. And you wonder why Roy Williams wanted to leave? Maybe you cry babies would like Terry Allen and Bohl back. This isn't Columbus, Ohio or even Lincoln, Nebraska. Get real guys, we need to do whatever it takes to be competitive. If you want to bitch about GREED open your eyes and look at Wall Street. The reality is Lew Perkins didn't create the rules, you did! Yes, many of us were in the stands for those lop sided losses, but one heck of lot more were not! Kansas football IS what it IS and to be competitive we have to be creative and imaginative. For my money, I am one heck of a lot happier, even this year with a 6-6 football team headed to a bowl and a freshman dominated basketball team that plays its heart out. I remember 1982-84. I remember football in MOST years. It is nice to have a stadium of blue instead of red for the Nebraska game and to have a chance of beating them every year. If that means suffering through traffic one game a year to help out, so be it. I've been to a few games in 80,000 to 105,000 seat stadiums and it is just a function of the number of people. Traffic sucks in Lincoln for every home game. Same with most successful football programs.Come on, this whole conversation makes us sound like a bunch of cry baby, dummies. Yes, its GREED, but it isn't greed created by Lew Perkins or anyone else in the athletic program. It is a function of the way things are. Its 2008, not 1998. This is the way it is. Get on board and quit being cry babies!

Having the game at Arrowhead is a win win situation for KU. I've had season tickets for football at KU since the days of Gilbert Brown, Dana Stubblefield, and Chris Maumalanga. I've been to KU games at Columbia before and I can attest to the fact that the parking sucks, and the seats in that place are horrible. It has always been my belief that MU has always been against having the game at Arrowhead, fortunately the contract has been extended to 2012. I went to the game at Arrowhead last year. The parking was unsupervised and not very well planned out, cars were parked on sidewalks, walkways and next to dumpsters. This year should be a helluva lot better with an upgrade in staffing and supervision. Below is a link to the Chiefs website for parking for the Border War games, KU will have parking on the westside of the stadium complex while MU will park on the eastside. You can click on the Kansas link for a video of the parking approaches, etc..,My best advice is to leave early, park in the Kansas lots with fellow Jayhawkers and enoy the game. I'm enthusiastic about the game being played in Arrowhead and not Columbia tomorrow. Let's get out there and show these Mizzou fans this isn't a home game for them and cheer the Hawks to victory!http://www.kcchiefs.com/collegefootball/

Mark my words, this series will go down in KU history as the Errorhead Series and will cost the football program more than once. Meanwhile the "exposure" to KU alum in the KC Metro area will backfire and build up the MU base instead. The football team will be left exposed all right. The fan support will dwindle and the game will be an away game every year. Any of you supporters of this atrocity know your history? Making them come to Lawrence and get a whipping after burning the town is just desserts. We let them totally off the hook.

Hawkish4bigM -Please educate us on KU history. Just how did Lawrence "capitulate" during the civil war? I think you misspoke your history lesson. And, please tell, how in God's name does any of the civil war history have any thing to do with this conversation. You are the first supposed KU fan to "capitulate" anything. I suspect your motive. Are you no more than a wolf in sheep's clothing? Or just another dumass Mizzou fan that needs a whupping? We'll see over the next few years who has "capitulated". If we're lucky it will be YOU!

You gotta be able to win whether the enviornment is hostile or friendly. Last year's football team won in stadiums more hostile than Arrowhead, and they won the Orange Bowl by beating a good VT team in a hostile enviornment. So don't give me this crap that putting the KU-MU game in Arrowhead takes away a win for KU. I think KU would have lost last year's game even if it had been played in Lawrence for the simple reason that they didn't bring their best stuff. Besides, big rivalries like this one deserve a more national stage than Lawrence or Columbia.

The Texas-OU game is not at a neutral site. A neutral site for that game would be to play it in Boulder. It may be closer to neutral, however, than Arrowhead for the simple reason that in the state of Texas, UT is not the only draw. I am sure there are Aggies, Bears, and Red Raiders pulling for OU in the same way we would cheer for any opponent of K-State. (And, as we all know, the largest county in Texas is Oklahoma.)I will never get used to Arrowhead being called a neutral site for a KU-MU game unless the following happens: sell tickets like it is a home game every other year. That is, 90% of the tickets in 2009 go to KU fans . That means that Chiefs season-ticket holders can't get a ticket, for it is common knowledge that more Chiefs fans are MU supporters than KU supporters. Maybe it doesn't sell out, but that stadium would look a lot better if it was full of KU Crimson and Blue (mainly Crimson against those red seats). It would also make available KU football tickets to a fan base that can only grow if they can buy tickets, even if just for one game.

Where are all the folks complaining about the game being played at Arrowhead today? Oh, they're on the Misery boards? Hmmm, maybe the reason KU fans were opposed to it after last year was the sour taste the loss left in our mouths? You can't deny after watching that game at Arrowhead that this is the best thing that has happened to the KU-MU war in a long, long time. The last 7 minutes of the game was just electric! Half the stadium going nuts when KU scored, the other half going crazy when MU scored. Back and forth. 50-50. THAT makes for a true rivalry atmosphere!Rock Chalk.

Actually Norman is closer than Austin is to Dallas by a few miles even though Norman is in Oklahoma and Austin is in Texas and the game is played in Dallas, Texas.

Interesting to read after the KU victory. Also interesting that no one cares that the players love having the game at Arrowhead (NFL) Stadium.Maybe it isn't just about the $. Maybe Lew, et al, are thinking about the players, and the attraction of playing in an NFL stadium. The players say it matters. We can use some more recruiting tools that don't require millions of $, but rather generate millions.Rock Chalk
