Dugan Arnett’s KU football notebook

On the eve of Saturday’s Border Showdown at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium, the second straight season the game will be played off-campus, much discussion has been centered on whether the schools will elect to keep the game in Kansas City, or return it to the respective teams’ home fields.

A final decision on the matter is expected to be reached in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, Kansas University’s players offered their thoughts on making Arrowhead the game’s home for the foreseeable future.

“It’s a good destination, because it allows more fans to come and it’s a neutral site, kind of like the Cotton Bowl with Texas and Oklahoma,” said junior safety Darrell Stuckey of Arrowhead. “It’s one of those things to where it allows it to be seen by more people, and it gives it a stage.”

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel and Kansas coach Mark Mangino have both said that they’re open to the idea of extending the current deal — a two-year arrangement set to expire after Saturday’s game — although Mangino insisted he’d wait until after this year’s game to offer a final analysis on whether he’d be in favor of another stint at Arrowhead.

One of the primary issues with moving the game to Kansas City for the foreseeable future is that every year one team will lose a home game. Last year, for instance, the Jayhawks would have played the Tigers in Lawrence if not for the Arrowhead deal, which, theoretically, would have provided an advantage in their quest for an outright Big 12 North title.

At least one other player isn’t too distraught about the idea of a losing a home game, however.

“I like playing away,” said senior linebacker Joe Mortensen. “I kind of like being the hated person, the underdog. I loved playing at South Florida. So it really doesn’t matter (where it is). I love playing in Kansas City. I thought Arrowhead was awesome last year. It’s an NFL stadium, it fits 80,000.

“I’m just glad the weather’s going to be a little bit better (this year),” he added. “It was, like, sub-zero last year.”

Sharp not practicing

Injured Kansas receiver Kerry Meier is back on the practice field, injured running back Jake Sharp isn’t, and that’s about all Mangino has to say about his team’s injury report heading into the Jayhawks’ final game of the season.

“What I will tell you is that Kerry is out on the practice field (and) Jake has not practiced to this point,” said the coach. “I will not address injury situations the rest of the week. I’ll do it here today, but I won’t answer any questions because it doesn’t matter who’s playing and who’s not, we’ve got to be ready to go to beat Missouri.”

We have this nice new football facility, and so far, I don't see where it's helped us land more or better recruits!

It will always be an uphill battle in recruiting until we do something about the stadium. The last 2 games that I have been to were the Homecoming this year and last year's A&M game in College Station. We are a long ways away from a home field advantage. Until they get rid of that track and we can count on 3 star recruits.

Try going to rivals and looking at all the stars behind the recruits names. If you have been paying attention over the last 10 years you should have noticed that this is far better than we have ever recruited. We used tobe lucky to get a handful of 3 star recruits and this year that is the majority. Improvement is definitely there.

DallasHawk: The stadium has nothing to do with recruiting, as long as the practice and residential facilities are top notch, and the academics are "acceptable". The players don't care about fan amenities, seating arrangements, or the absence or presence of a track. Once they are on the field, they are focused ONLY on what's going on inside the white lines. Have you ever been to the LA Coliseum? It's a dump...but it doesn't seem to impact USC's recruiting. As for our recruiting, it has been steadily improving over Mangino's years...not sure what ratings you're referencing.

Memorial Stadium does....and it doesn't......impact recruiting. If the fans were passionate and loud, it shouldn't impact a recruit that much. But when a recruit comes to a KU game and the crowd is subdued, then goes up to Lincoln and there are 85,000 rabid, loud fans, it DOES make a difference. So to me, the number of seats isn't as important as the quality of the fans. Right now, KU fans get at best a D rating when it comes to football.

I think our recruiting has steadily improved since Mangino has been here. Last year we did not have one two star recruit. They were mostly threes and I think two four star recruits.I think the stadium does matter. I think a high school kid standing on the sideline of a game at Nebraska is going to be more impressed by the noise and the atmosphere than they would be in front of fans at KU. If we could add 10,000 - 15,000 more seats and get the fans closer to the field it will be a lot louder and recruits would be more impressed with that. I would be.

Hawkster, you're crazy if you don't think the stadium matters. I'm just saying that there are only a few D1 programs out there with a track around the field. If you want a better atmosphere and an imposing student section, it’s very simple. You do what most programs did 15 + years ago and you remove the track and add more seating right on the field. Bottom line, I KNOW we are much better off right now than 8 years ago. I’m simply stating that if we want to continue to be in the mix with bigger recruits the atmosphere at Memorial Stadium needs to adapt.

Has anyone been to DKR in Austin? You are literally 50 yards away from the field on the 1st row. They took out the track and did not add seats and it seems to be working for them. I am in favor of removing the track and adding seats, however. Whoever posted about the loudness factor hit it right on the head. Until we can get an intimidating crowd we will lose some recruits who like that stuff.

It helps when there is something to get loud about.

I think Coach M has brought in better talent each year, and we have far better athletes now than Terry Allen could have ever gotten, irregardless of the facilities. It just seems like we are on pace to have about the same ranked recruiting class as last year, and the football facility was supposed to help us get better recruits. We are still in the top 30 to 50 range in recruiting classes, but I was hoping the new facility would have more of an impact. Missouri's facilities aren't any better than ours, yet they are ranked almost 20 positions higher than we are. Granted, there are more high quality recruits in Missouri, than there are in Kansas. But stll, I was hoping we would be doing better!

Display, are you serious? Do you follow recruiting at all? This is by far KU's best recruiting class we've had. It's not even close. We just need to finish the class out and feel a few holes. Just another example how clueless most KU fans are about football.Jeff, as far DKR, I agree you're a mile from the field, but they get 95,000+ in the stadium. That makes a difference. It doesn't mean KU isn't or can't be loud, but it doesn't hurt to have another 45,000+ people yelling.

Fans definitely make a difference in recruiting ...Basketball players at this school have said as much! The stadium, I don't know ... the new facilities are at least keeping Kansas in the hunt.

hawkfan20, are you serious? I played at KU and have followed the program for over 20 years. At this point, this class is not the best we have ever had. In fact, it isn't all that impressive yet.I agree with Displayhawk, we should be doing better than we are. The stadium does affect recruits, but not as much as you think. It is more about the entire set of facilities and the overall feeling a recruit gets when watching the game and KU fans are some of the worst football fans in America. In fact, I have only see worse fans at a Stanford game where they could care less about football. Maybe it has changed in the last few years, but I remember people cheering when we were on offense and being quiet when we were on defense and the players having to tell the fans to be quiet when we were on offense and ask them to get loud when we were on defense. It was pretty pathetic.
