FINAL: KU wins, 73-54
Collins misses a three, but Aldrich is right there for the stickback.
Travis Releford checks in at the 2:44 mark for his first action. Looks like he’s the one that’s being left out of the Jayhawks’ eight-man rotation.
After a rebound by Reed, KU runs the transition to perfection, as a Taylor feeds Aldrich for a thunder dunk.
Following a steal, the Jayhawks run well again, as Releford gets a layup inside off a Reed assist.
Conner Teahan gets a three from the top, and maybe that will help get him out of his shooting slump.
The clock runs out, ending a solid effort for KU, especially on the defensive end.
KU 60/UW 44 — 3:52 left in game
Morningstar is late on a rotation, and Washington drains a three. Self isn’t happy, yelling out at both Reed and Morningstar.
Aldrich follows with an NBA move inside, faking outside before cutting back into the lane for an easy lay-in.
The Huskies hit another three from the corner, but Collins responds with two more on a dribble drive.
Isaiah Thomas puts in another three, and suddenly the ice-cold Huskies have hit three long-range shots in a row.
Off a nice feed by Morningstar, Marcus Morris gets an easy layup inside.
KU 52/UW 33 — 7:22 left in game
Reed hits a 15-foot fallaway jumper, and KU’s up 49-28.
Following a three from Washington, Marcus Morris shows a nice turnaround in the lane. He still has fumbled a few inside and hasn’t had the best of hands while receiving the ball tonight.
KU 47/UW 28 — 11:55 left in game
Collins drive in and forces a blocking call, which brings a standing ovation from the pro-KU crowd. Pretty sure it’s the first blocking call we’ve seen tonight. He hits both freebies.
Collins follows by stealing the ball from Brockman before laying it in on the other end.
Two more blocks by Aldrich, who’s having one of the best games of his career. That’s six blocks for the sophomore.
KU 43/UW 28 — 15:59 left in game
Marcus Morris gets two on a nice feed inside by Collins.
Morningstar gets beat on a curl inside, and Quincy Poindexter makes him pay with a three-point play.
Collins follows with his own three-point play, making a shot in the lane and the subsequent free throw.
Taylor hits a floater, and Marcus Morris adds a turnaround jumper to push KU’s lead to 41-28.
Off a Morningstar steal, Taylor rattles in a dunk, and Washington calls timeout. Collins does jumping jacks at mid-court, urging the fans to get out of their seats and cheer. They do just that.
Kansas scoring
Cole Aldrich 8, Sherron Collins 7, Tyshawn Taylor 6, Markieff Morris 4, Marcus Morris 4, Brady Morningstar 3.
KU was 13-for-24 from the floor (54 percent), 1-for-4 from three-point range (25 percent) and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Also of note, Aldrich has four blocks, and KU has seven as a team.
Washington also shot miserably in the first half, making just nine of 38 shots (24 percent). The Huskies were just 1-for-10 from three-point range.
Also a concern for KU: Washington was dominant on the boards, out-rebounding KU, 28-13. UW had 17 offensive rebounds, and Brockman had 10 by himself. The Jayhawks are fortunate to be up 10 with such a discrepancy.
KU 32, UW 22 — Halftime
Markieff Morris finishes a nice move with a shot off the glass inside.
KU continues to play a 2-3 zone, presumably to stay out of any more foul trouble.
Tyshawn Taylor hits a floater in the lane, but after a possession where Washington couldn’t score despite getting five-plus offensive rebounds, Taylor misses a wide-open transition layup after getting a feed from Collins.
Big play for KU at the end of the half, as Justin Dentmon is blocked inside by Aldrich with 5 seconds left. Quickly, the Jayhawks threw it upcourt to Taylor, who hit a finger roll just before the buzzer to give KU a 10-point halftime edge.
KU 26/UW 22 — 3:50 left in 1st half
KU comes out next defensive possession with a 2-3 zone, and the Huskies miss a pair of open threes.
Aldrich hits a 16-footer on a feed from Collins, and KU is up 23-14.
After a missed free throw, Brady Morningstar hustles to get a steal. He was bumped while going up for the shot, putting in a layup before throwing his fist out in celebration. He finished the three-point play to put KU up 10.
Quintrell Thomas gets two fouls in a matter of 30 seconds, and he now has three personals. He’ll have to sit the rest of the half.
Brockman gets a stickback on an offensive rebound, capping a 6-0 run that cut the KU lead to 26-22.
A bad pass inside by Taylor leads to his best highlight as a Jayhawk. After racing back on defense, Taylor got way above the rim to reject a layup by Isaiah Thomas out of bounds.
KU 19/UW 14 — 7:43 left in 1st half
Chiefs running back Larry Johnson is shown sitting in the stands, and he draws immediate boos from the fans. He still had a smirk on his face and seemed to almost enjoy it.
Collins is called for a charging foul, and that’s two on him. Morningstar comes in to replace him.
Aldrich gets a two inside, and KU leads 17-8.
Collins comes back in with 9:24 left. We’ll see if he can avoid his third foul.
Aldrich turns a bad pass into a good one, snatching it away from a defender before slamming it home.
Marcus Morris picks up his second foul, again on a charging call. This officiating crew is a charge-happy bunch.
Marcus and Markieff Morris have both gotten into brief scuffles with Washington players in the last minute. Both could stand to settle down a bit.
KU 15/UW 8 — 11:55 left in 1st half
Sherron Collins hits an 18-foot fadeaway, then nods in satisfaction as he goes back down the court. That’s seven points on 3-for-3 shooting for him.
With a young team out there (Morris twins, Tyrel Reed, Morningstar, Taylor), Marcus Morris finishes with a tough move inside, going under the basket before pivoting back into position for a layup.
KU 7/UW 7 — 15:34 left in 1st half
Sherron Collins hits his first shot, a pull-up from 15 feet to give KU the first points.
Interesting that Self is having Marcus Morris guard Jon Brockman. It’s worked well so far.
Cole Aldrich, after getting double-teamed inside, finds an open Marcus Morris for a lay-in.
Already, KU has had two charges, one on Taylor and one on Marcus Morris.
Isaiah Thomas is proving to be a pesky defender and also a capable scorer. He skies over the defense for a three from the top of the circle.
Aldrich responds, though, once again finding the open man on a double-team. This time, it’s Collins, who drains a three from the left wing to tie the score at 7.
Aldrich misses an easy one, then picks up his first foul going for an offensive rebound. Double whammy for the Jayhawks.
8:56 p.m.
KU starters: Sherron Collins, Brady Morningstar, Tyshawn Taylor, Marcus Morris, Cole Aldrich.
8:53 p.m.
A good KU crowd tonight at the Sprint Center, but not close to a sellout. Many of the upper sections are more full than the lower sections. Interesting.
Keep an eye on Travis Releford tonight. Remember, he's from Kansas City, Mo., so this is truly a homecoming for him.
8:35 p.m.
Syracuse holds on, winning 89-83. Great game for quick sophomore point guard Jonny Flynn, who finished with 18 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Paul Harris, from Niagara Falls, N.Y., like Flynn, also had 18 points. The Orange won despite a so-so game from former McDonald's All-American Eric Devendorf, who had nine points on 3-for-11 shooting.
Interesting scenario now for the loser of the KU-Washington game, as that team will have to take on a disappointed (and ranked) Florida squad.
8:04 p.m.
Syracuse has pulled ahead of Florida in somewhat of a surprise (74-67, 6:45 left). Both teams are big and athletic and look like they could pose matchup problems inside for KU.
7:16 p.m.
Welcome to the Newell Post Live, coming to you from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., where Kansas is getting set to play Washington in the CBE Classic later tonight.
Syracuse and Florida have tipped off, so we’ll get to some observations of that game a little later.
For now, let’s get to three keys for the Jayhawks as they go up against the Huskies.
1. Avoid the whistles
Washington’s 6-foot-7 forward Jon Brockman is a preseason All-American and has averaged 20.3 points and 11.3 rebounds through three games this season.
The Jayhawks will need to have all of their available bodies to throw at him defensively, meaning it will be important for both Cole Aldrich and Marcus Morris to avoid the early fouls that have plagued them in the first two games.
2. Make outside shots early
KU has already shown a tendency to be a streaky team from the outside, going 1-for-13 from behind the arc against UMKC before making 7 of 18 three-point shots against Florida Gulf Coast. Sherron Collins, Tyrel Reed and Conner Teahan have seemed to have more confidence when the early shots have been falling, so we’ll see if they get off to a hot start tonight.
3. Guard the perimeter
KU’s newcomers are still learning to play defense the way coach Bill Self wants them to but, ready or not, they’ll get a tough challenge tonight. KU’s guards will especially get tested, as WU senior guard Justin Dentmon is averaging 15 points per game and freshman Isaiah Thomas (no relation to Isiah Thomas) has posted 12.3 points per contest. Watch closely to see how guys like Tyshawn Taylor and Travis Releford handle their assignments on the defensive end.

Is it really that hard to believe that we have a role player like Morningstar on the floor. I think Coach Self knows this team a little better than we do. Granted Cole had 6 blocked shots... Still concerned about rebounding. We don't have that mental toughness and defense that past Self teams have had.

BannerforKirk (anonymous) says...
Hey railer - how many points did they have? How many of those rebounds were then blocked or stolen? Yes, they had a lot of offensive rebounds, that's what happens when the team plays good defense and forces them into difficult/low percentage shots and they miss, what, 70% of their shots? And it was noticeably improved in the second half once Coach Self made some corrections. Yes, the rebounding was a problem, but as Coach Knight astutely said, sometimes that can be misleading in a game like that - and it is misleading to use that as an indicator of the quality of defense tonight.

I don't think many teams this inexperienced in a Self system have had the toughness and defense that last year's (National Championship) team did - or the Elite Eight team before that. Check back at the end of the season and see what kind of defense this team plays then and what kind of toughness they had. I'd say another aspect of toughness is missing the rebound and then stuffing it back into the guy's face when he tries to shoot again. This is the first real game of the season, I'll take a 19 point win (and only giving up 54!), no matter how much they get out rebounded.

Im hoping Cole doesnt get picked off after this year. I hope sense and reason prevails. It's one thing to get good, and obviously he's doing that. It's another to be able to dominate a game. Not only that, but the real joy of playing comes in college (whereas in the pros youre doing it as a job). Cole is looking sharp, I can say that. He may be the best big man in the country. Shut my mouf! Did I say the best? The Best! You certainly wont be able to quell the hype if he continues to improve. He'll be changing in phone booths by season's end.

I, for one, was impressed by Brady and Tyrel's control of the ball. The Warshington guards could have really got into their heads and caused turnovers at will, but they showed good skills. I was expecting Cole to sit more with foul trouble. But, it was a pleasant surprise to have him play the minutes and put up the numbers. I don't think Bobby Knight has a "man crush" on him at all. I respect his opinion when he acknowledges talent and potential. He may be opinionated on many subjects, but, you gotta love him now that ESPN is paying him. His input is interesting and more based on experience than just observations that most of those guys rattle off. Neeeeeext.....Oh yeah, great win last night Xavier! Now Memphis won't be as fond of the name Xavier as they were last week (you know, Xavier Henry).

The boys looked good tonight, the first true "test" of the season wasn't much of a test at all. They can't continue to give up 18 Offensive rebounds to teams or they are going to find themselves in trouble vs better shooting teams. I have a feeling if Cole keeps playing as well as he is, then he is gone after this year. Over at NBAdraft.net they have him slated at going #12 overall

Morningstar won me over tonight. He's got exactly what his dad had. He's a sleepy eyed jumping jack and garbage man. He's short and inexperienced, so he's got to get used to what guys can do to him when he takes it to the rim, but he can play at this level. And he is just the perfect designated passer for this team, even though he's got a gun. This is strictly a chemistry thing at this point. Reeds probably the better player. Releford will be a star some time, but the team just operates better with Brady in than out, at least with this unusual mix of 3 scoring bigs, a great PG in Sherron and this frankly potentially amazing 2 in Taylor. KU has 4 scorers in the game at any given time, four guys who can make a credible array of offensive moves out of their positions. I know this is going to seem outrageous, but this team has MORE fire offensive power inside than last year's team, or at least plays through it more. Cole and Kief and Marcus are actually scorers. Last year, Kaun was not much of a threat, Arthur could score but he could not keep his head in a lot of games, and DBlock learned to score, but he was not a natural scorer like this year's big three. This team has so many guns that Brady stifling his shot is exactly what this team needs. But I suspect there will come a time later this season, once Cole and 'Kieff get their inside offense hard wired inside, that Brady will drift to the corner and take threes. I am no longer sure Mario Little is a certain starter when he comes back. He'll bring a lot better defense when he comes in, but Brady's got a sixth sense about how to make the second pass to make things happen. That wouldn't get him any mileage on a conventional team with 2 or three scorers on the floor at any time. But on this team, he's perfect. He's like Lefty Lynn Shackleford on UCLA's old Jabbar teams. Shackleford couldn't have started on ANY other UCLA team of the Wooden era, but he was just perfect for a team that had such enormous power inside. Shackleford became their baseline corner bomber, whenever the defense packed it inside on Jabbar. You can tell with this team, that opponents are going to have to surrender the outside sooner or later to KU in order to stop this inside scoring power KU has. Brady is going to be there popping from the corner eventually. I'm not saying this bunch can hang inside with UNC or UCLA this year necessarily, though they just might be able to by season's end, but KU's inside scoring game is just going to cause opponents a ton of problems, when KU is not in foul trouble. When you've got three bigs who can all jump hook, and Marcus can actually put the ball on the deck and create inside, this is serious business to defend.

At the other end of the floor, things are looking sufficiently weak that Mister M2M, Bill Self, has already made clear in this game that this team is going to play zone this year. No ifs, ands, or buts. I say bully for Coach Self. This is a natural zone team with Aldrich and not to play some zone would waste his remarkable wing span on only one opposing player.Cole may not be a polished, flaw free diamond yet, but watching him bang with Brockman made clear that Kaun, DBlock and Arthur really did toughen him up. Brockman can bull with the best of them, and Cole dished out as much as he took.Syracuse's zone is apt to expose Kieff's and Marcus' inexperience in a big way. But Syracuse is apt to get a big dose of zone back in its face.Good first night effort against a legitmate D1 team, albeit a short one.

Brady was leading the team in assists coming into this game. He knows how Coach Self wants the team to be run (and does it right), and is able to distribute the ball thereby freeing Sherron to be more of a scorer. Gotta Love Sherron's leadership across the board!

Kudos to the team. Youngsters did themselves proud. Sound like an old-timer, don't I. I was really tickled with the effort of the team. Seems like each player played to his strengths, and as young as they are they played very well on the offensive end. The defense seems to be behind the offense, which is not something you will often say about a young team, but I think it really seems to be true of this team. Our youngsters were often out of position in the man defense. They worked their tails off in the zone defense, which is often harder for young kids to stay in position. Why did the zone work so well? Because we have the genuine security system (Or is it blanket?) in Cole Aldrich. It's really neat to have someone who makes your offense perform well (Sheronatron) and another guy that really picks up your defense (C.A. ~ Cover it All Aldrich). The box of chocolates was a great treat tonight! Yes there were a lot of missed block outs on defense, but there was so much effort that I felt great about the game. I must say that UW didn't look like a very good team, but they do have talent. So, this was a good win for our young ballclub. To those who have been dissing Tyrel and Brady, put a sock in it, they both did what they were asked to do. I liked what the commentators said about Brady...They said that Coach Self said he likes his effort.Wow, Tyshawn is a gazelle! Mc Morris has some nifty moves down low on the offensive end.Only seven guys played major minutes. Hopefully that won't cause the BabyBoomers to wearout tomorrow night.Cuse and Hawks! Chalk it UP!

Read these posts for years and thought id chime in.I would like to say, for all the smack talked on Morningstar and Reed on these forums, and oh how we will be in trouble if they are getting any real minutes later in the season, i was impressed at how quick they moved their feet on defense, and how well they handled the ball in half court sets on offense. Can we get of their backs a bit? Also, dare i say, that this extremely young team may be ahead of that All-American class that just won us a championship, as far as defense goes. We played well defensively, we gotta block out more and not let so many offensive boards(Morningstar had a nice blockout at one point, lay off the dude seriously) and then we are a righteous defensive team again.I love the Bill Self era. I was reading ESPN the magazines College BBall preview issue and one of the players in the interview mentioned being defensive minded and was something in there about teams lately winning titles with superd defense and Kansas was mentioned, i much prefer winning 75-50 than 100-80:) I loved Roy Williams but we were a finesse team in those years, now we are a stifling defense orientated team, i am in love.

Umm...Jesse. Larry Johnson did not get booed. Don't know what game you were watching but most fans around me were shouting "LJ! LJ!" and he acknowledged them. Both he and D-Bowe got strong hands from the crowd. Get your facts straight.

darnell — I don't think I misheard boos. And he's obviously a guy that would get booed from some of the publicity he's gotten lately. You must have just been sitting in a nice section, I guess.
