Kansas guard Sherron Collins calls out a play against Emporia State during the first half Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 at Allen Fieldhouse.
Sherron Collins doesn’t need to worry about being called a “ballhog” or a “gunner” at any time this season.
“Coach wants me to shoot. He says I can take 18 to 20 shots a game. It’s nice to know I can do that,” said Collins, Kansas University’s junior point guard.
He scored a career-high 25 points off 9-of-14 shooting — he made four of six three-pointers — in Tuesday’s 85-45 rout of Florida Gulf Coast. The 5-foot-11, 200-pounder hit six of 11 shots — one of four threes — in KU’s 71-56 season-opening victory over UMKC.
“I don’t count my shots. I don’t pay attention to that. I’m just hot right now. Everything is falling,” said Collins, who has made 15 of 25 shots (60 percent), including five of 10 from three.
He averaged 22 points a game in two exhibition games while making 15 of 21 shots, including three of five threes.
“Right now he’s good, and he’s confident,” KU coach Bill Self said of Collins.
“Our guys should play through Cole (Aldrich, center who has cashed 11 of 14 shots) and should play through Sherron. If we look to get those guys chances to score in different areas, we’ll have a chance.
“Cole and Sherron should be taking the shots, the majority of them,” Self added. “Everybody else should be taking open looks.”
Collins — the leader of this young team — has averaged 33 minutes of floor time in KU’s first two games. For that to continue, he’ll have to stay healthy. Remember, he had left knee problems last season, corrected by offseason arthroscopic surgery.
“I am 100 percent. Nothing is bothering me,” Collins said. “Playing more in the game is taking a little toll on my body. Other than that, I’m fine. Practice is fine. I’m 100 percent and happy to be out there.
“It’s a big relief,” he added of his knee feeling fine. “I’m kind of speechless at this time about my health. Knock on wood ... I hope I stay this way. I just know I feel good.”
He’s added a pull-up jumper — one in which he goes full speed before suddenly stopping and popping from 12 to 15 feet.
“I am comfortable to get my own shot, to do what I want,” Collins said. “That’s something I worked on with coach (Joe) Dooley in the offseason. He did a great job with me helping me learn different moves. We knew I’d have to score in different ways.
“I’m confident right now. I try to get my teammates going because I know I’ll get going. I’m in no rush to shoot the ball.”
Collins was extra fired up about Tuesday’s game, considering it followed the unveiling of the 2008 national title banner.
A video preceded the banner, one that included a shot of the play in which Collins fed Mario Chalmers for a game-tying three with 2.1 seconds left in regulation of the national title game versus Memphis. Collins, who shoveled the ball to Chalmers after charging 70 feet from the far baseline to the right wing, looks like he may have been lightly shoved by Derrick Rose before passing the rock to Chalmers.
“I’m so glad it was a no-call because we’d have gotten two shots (at foul line) instead of (a) three,” Collins said. “I thanked the ref. He said it wasn’t a foul. I said, ‘I’m glad it wasn’t a foul.’’’
KU, of course, went on to roll in overtime for the title.
Back to the present: KU, 2-0, will play Washington, 1-1, at 9 p.m. Monday at the Sprint Center and meet either Florida or Syracuse on Tuesday night in CBE Classic games.
“We’ve moved past last year. We know it’s not the same team as last year,” Collins said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do to get ready for next week. Practice will be harder, more intense. We know there are tough games coming up.”
lRecruiting: Dominic Cheek, a 6-5 senior shooting guard from St. Anthony High in Jersey City, N.J., will visit Rutgers this weekend and Pittsburgh on Nov. 25, Rivals.com reports. Cheek also is considering KU and Villanova. Memphis is no longer on his list following the signing of Xavier Henry. ... John Wall, a 6-4 senior point guard from Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C., plans on visiting Baylor and possibly Miami and Duke in coming months. He also has North Carolina State, KU and Memphis on his list.

A Collins injury -- at least in the first half of this year -- would be absolutely devastating to this team. I'm not sure there is a single player that is more important to a team in D1 ball... certainly no one on any other top 25 team. That being said, I think come conference play, this team will be a miles ahead of where they are now. Right now Cole (when he's on the floor...) and Sherron are simply playing in a different league than everyone else. The young guys have quite a ways to go, but the talent level is there, and I think this baptism by fire will get them playing at a top D1 level fairly quickly. One can only hope that Manning is spending hours each night teaching post moves to the twins, because clearly they need improvement in that area. Plus they all just need time to play together and trust each other. Then this will truly be a top 25 team.

Stephen Curry is BY FAR the most important player to his team. The kid had 44 against OU and almost single-handedly beat them. If you think Collins has the green light.......Curry could shoot it from halfcourt and his coach wouldn't care. Remember, he didn't have to be back this year. I think Collins will get the exposure necessary this year for him to REALLY think about the NBA next year. He's going to average around 17 a game and probably around 4 assists. He's a solid player when he's healthy. KU would be lost without him right now. Does anyone know when Mario Little is coming back? What kind of impact will he bring to the team? I had high praise for him. I figured he would have ample PT.

Collins isn't to Kansas as Curry is to Davidson. Not only he the most important player to his team being that it's freaking Davidson who also lost their second best player from last year, but he is THE best offensive player in college basketball today period. Maybe in a while.

Collins is going to be the man for us all year as long as he doesn't have an injury *crosses fingers*. But Stephan Curry is head and shoulders more important to his team, and to the entire history of his basketball program than anyone else playing right now including Tyler Hansbrough. That Oklahoma game was an exhibition for Curry. I think he could do that every night if he had to, but he will continue to do what he needs to do and if it's score 20 he'll score 20 and if it's score 50 he'll go for 50. He gets his shot off so quick that the only way to keep him from shooting is to keep the ball out of his hands like we did last year on that last play.John Wall can take a hike, I hope we get Dominic Cheek. Hey Tyshawn! Make this happen for us!

the article says that he is planning on signing during the early signing period, which would mean today, being it the last day of the early period. Every other article that I have read has him waiting until spring. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see.overall, I think cheek would be better for KU than wall. Yes, wall a more complete player right now but he will be done after one year. I mean, at best, if we did get wall, how far, realistically would we make it in the tournament next year? the elite eight or possibly the final four. There is a good posibility that cheek will be in college for multiple years, and we all know what happends when players stick around to play at KU! Just think about cheek, ej, robinson along with the guys we already have. Not to mention if cole or sherron decide to come back next year. We would be back to a top five team

There is a very real possibility that neither Sherron or Cole will be in Lawrence after this season. Sherron will be showcased in our offense this year. DJ Augustin was a lottery pick last year. If Sherron can take this team into the second weekend of the tournament, he's on that lottery level, too.Cole is a 6-11 rebounding and shot blocking force. Spencer Hawes is in the NBA and he doesn't do either of those things. If Cole can show that he can score in the paint, he's a lottery pick. Skilled 6-11 guys are hard to come by.That leaves us with a lineup next year looking something like this:G - T. TaylorG - T. Releford (or super recruit TBD - maybe E. Johnson or a Cheek/Stephenson)F - M. LittleF - T. Robinson (or Mc. Morris)F - Mk. MorrisNot exactly the scout team there. We could win 25 games and the Big XII title with that.

Dose anyone know the record for field goal attempts in a game by a KU player? I couldn't find it yesterday, but it went along with my point of letting Sherron get enough shots to put up Curry-like numbers. I know in general KU has never had to resort to that kind of play, but for one season it would be kind of fun to watch Sherron just go off on everyone.

LAJayhawk-No one on any other Top 25 team more important than Collins? He's extremely vital, no doubt, but I'd argue that Stephen Curry is far more important to Davidson. Without him, even in their weak conference, Davidson would struggle to .500. Without him against OU a couple nights ago, Davidson is run out of the building.

I don't think that Cole will make the jump to the NBA any time soon. What, besides his size and potential, makes him NBA-ready? Nothing. Certainly not a lottery-caliber pick, which would be the only reason to leave Kansas after your sophomore season. Let's just hope he continues to improve and play smarter basketball. Let's be realistic; he needs to crack the All-Big XII team and perhaps some national honors or recognition before looking at the League.IMOP, Coach Self / Kansas Basketball doesn't need the "one and done" or so-called "rock-star" recruits. Guys like Mayo, Beasley, etc. don't look at Kansas because it's not about the individual....it's about the team. Those types want everything on their terms. They don't fit well here. The Morris twins, Taylor, and Releford have already shown glimpses in the first two games of their prowess on the court. Within Coach's system, these guys will develop into great players, fan favorites for 3-4 years, all the while competing for Big XII and National Championship hardware.

kusarge,I see your POV and sympathize with it, but...Clyde, Wilt, Jo Jo, Danny, Pierce, and BRush, would have or could have been OADs in this day and age, had they been allowed, or wanted to do so.KU's legacy would just not be anywhere near as wonderful without such players. We can continiue to do well without such players. But if you want your stable to run for rings, it has to have at least its share of the best horses.I actually think that what would actually happen to OADs at KU is what happened to Pierce, BRush and Arthur. It is so fun, they stay for two. They make a calculated trade-off. They optimize their draft rank by staying two years, because its a heck of a lot of fun to be at KU on and off the floor. I think some people underestimate how fun it is to be at KU and how much this keeps players there an extra year. Its not enough fun to stay more than two, if the L calls. I was bored in Lawrence, by the end of sophmore year even as a regular student. But those first two years were two of the best of my life. I wouldn't trade them for anything. And two years of any coach's lectures are enough, even from a great one like Self.Pierce was one of the smartest guys about this that I ever saw. He was quiet. He kept his own counsel. He didn't bolt after one year. He got better and had some fun at KU. But he didn't let emotion for Roy and KU get in the way of making the right move.Tyler Hansbrough is just plain stupid. He has given up probably 2-3 million dollars to stay and "help" Roy win a championship and optimize his draft slot. That is crazy by any standard. Roy would NEVER give up $2-3M for ANYONE for anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Roy ought to be ashamed of himself for letting Tyler stay around when he should be in the pros trying to get as rich as Roy.Ditto for KU players. Its good to come to KU. Its good to have a year or two of fun. Stay three or four, if its the only way to get to the L, or if you're not going to the L and need the degree. But don't forget: the game is about getting as rich as the Coach. Bill Self pulls down $30M for ten years; that's the game of life. Basketball is THE game of games. Players can and should become good at both at KU.

I don't think the either Cole or Sherron should make the jump following this year. Cole did not even start last year and only played limited minutes. He will make a bigger impression this year but is still a work in progress. It takes longer for big guys to develop their game. Sherron has all the skills but is undersized for the NBA. Many of the points in the NBA are 6-3 and taller. Despite his size, Sherron will be the leader of this years team. Most of his draft status will be determined by how KU does against Texas and OU. However, we'll see how the year progresses. I hope they stick together an go for another Championship in 2010.

justanotherfan: Exactly man. I don't see how there can be ANY question though. The only way Cole will be coming back is if he decides to stay another year just because of personal reasons - wants another year of "prep" or something. He will be 1st round no doubt already. Footwork, now he's going for the dunk effortlessly, great body control and speed for his size. No brainer. Downright ignorant to think that there is even a chance that the NBA wouldn't take Cole in 1st round. Sherron another. Goner unless he gets hurt or something again (kock on wood) - he is gonna average over 20 pts a game and every KU fan can see and appreciate that he is too good with body control, finishing when driving to the bucket, and all around just hitting his shots. The guy is a freak of nature. I love those two players!! WOW

Also, I thought it was somewhat of a plus that Cheek stated he took Memphis off the list because Henry signed. Henry didn't come here either so that means Cheek would only have come here if Henry didn't and it's nice to see that it's still a possibility. And that Taylor is here another plus. He is the #11 best player in the country (top 15 at least) so you're darn right adding him would make this already great recruiting season into a phenomenal one. I'm hoping!

Jaybate - Very astute as always. I seem to recall reading an article about draft positions declining after the soph yr also. Thought being that NBA thinks there is still potential to be developed vs. being maxed out. Don't think that is accurate; just the perception in the league. It would seem that Cole's situation is similar to Little's last year. When we first started recruiting him, some people talked down about his stats - until it was pointed out that he played his first year behind the JUCO national POY. Cole sat behind 3 NBA draft picks - and learned. My guess is that Wall signs in the spring with KU after Sherron declares, because he knows the ball is in his hands. It will be the prime year for KU as Little & Appleton will be Sr's, and it could be the last year for MM^2 as well. Remember that MM^2 have a yr post-HS, so they'll be that much antsier to jump after 2.

It would seem that March has a huge impact on some people staying or leaving. I seem to recall BRush commenting that he would have left after his first year except for the 1st round exit, and the uneasiness it left. Juju obviously left (and BRush would have) after the E-8 loss, which wasn't nearly as hard to stomach. Fortunately, it was motivating for those that stayed as well.

For everyone thinking that Cole and Sherron are locks for the first round, don't you think that what happened in last year's draft with DA and Marion might be playing in their heads? I know that DA's circumstances were a little extraordinary, but s*it happens and could happen again.I think Cole definitely waits at least one more year unless he has a Wooden Award season. Sherron is a little different, if he has a year that would guarantee him good money, he might bolt given the reality of his situation (he does have a family to help support).

Aldrich is an outstanding talent and he will be a lottery pick when he leaves but I just don't believe that he will leave after this year. He is a rare talent that is a great combination of size skill and athleticism. But he is still young and can use a lot more improvement on more than just his fouling bc that is just a small issue that will go away in the first half of this season. He needs and knows he needs fine tuning to his game and will come back to lead the team next year, but don't expect to be hearing a senior night speech from him.

86, Cheek and Taylor were indeed high school teammates.I don't see Cheek going to Pitt, because Pitt is in the running for another good wing guy, Lance Stephenson. Pitt is really into NYC guards, and Stephenson fits that mold. As for the debate about whether Cole stays in college or goes to the NBA, lets look at some current NBA players:Greg Oden - 1st pick, 2007. 15.7 points, 9.6 rbs, 3.3 blks at Ohio State.Al Horford - 3rd pick 2007. 13.2 points, 9.5 rbs, 1.9 blks at FloridaKevin Love - 5th pick in 2008. 17.5 points, 10.1 rbs, 1.4 blks at UCLAJoakim Noah - 9th pick in 2007. 12.0 points, 8.42 rbs, 1.8 blks at FloridaSpencer Hawes - 10th pick in 2007. 14.9 points, 6.4 rbs, 1.7 blks at Washington.Brook Lopez - 10th pick in 2008. 16 points, 8.2 rbs, 2 blks at StanfordRobin Lopez - 15th pick in 2008. 10.2 points, 5.6 rbs, 2.3 blks at Stanford Marreese Speights - 16th pick in 2008. 14.5 points, 8 rbs, 1.4 blks at Florida.Roy Hibbert - 17th pick in 2008. 13.4 points, 6.4 rbs, 2.2 blks at Georgetown.Kosta Koufus - 23rd pick in 2008. 14.4 points, 6.7 rbs, 1.8 blks at Ohio State. If I had to guess, I'd say Cole is going to be a 12.5 point, 9.5 rebound, 2 block guy this year. That puts him in the middle of the first round, I think. Add that he's still relatively young and has the frame to get stronger, and I think a lot of GMs would love to have him after this season.

There is a HUGE difference between being able to get drafted in the first round and being ready to play in the NBA.Maxhawk, chill, you are right in that TODAY, Cole isn't ready to play in the NBA, but JChief40 is more correct. The NBA drafts on potential, not the current skill level. Barring him fouling out of most games this year (A possibility, though an unlikely one imo), and him not averaging 12 ppg and 8 rpg. I think he would very likely be a first round pick. This year won't be quite as deep a talent pool as last year, so he might get to lotto level even if he doesn't do much more than 12 and 8. I expect him to be at least 12 and 9 and probably better than that.I certainly would hope he would stay another year if he only gets 12 and 8 or less, but it isn't a given, based on the fact that his upside is great. Each time he runs the floor to the top of the T and hits a running jumper from 15-18 ft, his stock goes up (He's got at least 2 of those already this year, and he looks smooth doing it). That play and his size will light up NBA GM's.The only early-entry-player(eep) from last year's class that I thought was ready to PLAY, day-in and day-out in the NBA was Michael Beasley, but he was only one of many that got drafted!!! And even though most of those eep's are playing, they're showing their warts, but they were drafted and are playing!!!

Yes, I agree, Stephan Curry is extremely important to his team. Without him they would crumble. My point, though, to all of you who responded was less "who is more valuable to his team than Sherron Collins," but instead, "Sherron Collins is very valuable to his team." He is as close to an irreplaceable piece as I've seen at Kansas in a long time, even if it is less quantifiable than Curry (although, Woodhawk, I would argue that even though I agree that Curry is the most valuable player in college ball, with Sherron, KU -- in the first half of this year -- would also struggle to be a .500 team). But, yes, I agree with you all, Curry is probably the most important player to his team.To further the point on Collins, though: his importance is reflected less in the numbers he will put up; rather in the way he opens up the game for his teammates. Yes, he is far and away better and quicker with the ball than anyone else on the team, and he has better court vision, better instincts, far better control and individual moves, more confidence and exponentially more big game experience than anyone else (including Cole). BUT his biggest attribute right now is that defenses will key in on him -- especially with Bill Self publicly announcing his need to shoot 20 times a game. When opposing defenses focus on Sherron, the newbies have a little pressure taken off, and, with many of them having the talent to make big plays, they have the ability to gain substantial and important reps and build their confidence. AND Sherron clearly has the ability to get them the ball even with the added pressure (I'm guessing one of the biggest assists in Kansas basketball history last year is proof enough). Without Sherron, those same young guys are forced to make plays against harder defensive sets without the gifted passer and would undoubtedly struggle. And, thus, the team would not be even close to the same... again, for at least the first half of the year.A similar theory applies to Cole -- which is why we've seen much more success so far when he's on the floor -- but since Collins has the ball in his hands on essentially every offensive possession (plus his much more refined game), clearly this theory would pertain to him in a much greater degree. If he's off the floor for periods of time similar to Cole early on, there would be actual data to back it up.

If the draft was tomorrow Cole would not be a 1st rounder, but by the end of the season he probably will. You guys are arguing different points. Who cares hopefully he has an amazing season and is NBA ready, because that means he would have done awesome for us this season.

“That’s a big plus that Tyshawn’s at Kansas,” Cheek said. “He can tell me what he likes and what he don’t like. He can tell me how the coaches and everything are.”Reminds me of a certain Henry who joined his bro not long after.

JayhawkCasey - if the draft was tomorrow and everyone's game was based off of what everyone has done the last couple weeks then again - Cole WOULD get drafted in 1st round based on his potential which, to me, is already VERY apparent. If he never got any better, if you can envision that, and just played the rest of the season at his current abilities then he is still nba bound. What games are you watching?? I am talking about the game where the freakish athletic big guy named Cole Aldrich bounces that orange ball up and down and stuffs the ball in a round hoop like it's a tennis ball. Potential - do you see it? I do and if some others do as well you can guarantee GMs sure do. He will of course have an awesome season - why would you think any different?

I didn't say that he doesn't have potential, but playing against nobodies doesn't show the NBA potential. I do think he will have a big season and be a 1st rounder, but currently he has not played enough for the NBA to risk a 1st round pick on him. Maybe after we play Florida, Michigan St., AZ, ... you can say he has been amazing.

I am not talking about actually being "ready" for the NBA - I'm talking about the NBA willing to draft him based on all of his awesome potential. UNC was not a fluke - you don't do that against Tyler on accident. That was called a flash of potential. His ability to finish this year, I can already see, has gotten better. His footwork is better. He is very confident this year - then this guy starts swishing jumpers. Enough already, NBA will come calling. I'd love to see him turn that down to further refine his skills. Speaking of "ready" - Arthur wasn't "ready" to make a stink in the NBA. But his potential was through the roof. Same with Cole ladies.

Arthur was far better than Cole is NOW, maybe not later. They play a different position and Arthur had far better O which the NBA is all about

JayhawkCasey - I didn't say that you said he didn't have potential. I said that just because he is not "ready" to play in the NBA doesn't mean the NBA will still draft him after this year! It doesn't matter if this season so far has been "nobodies" - I just look at the guy at the court and the way he plays. He's got NBA all over him.

People people.. I wasn't saying Cole is better than Arthur!! I was merely saying a guy, such as those two, could use another year with us to further hone in skills and make an immediate impact in the NBA. That is it. Not comparing talent - only that in a perfect world these kids would stay until that potential becomes a sure thing at the next level on day ONE. Argh!

I worry that Collins might try to do to much. I know he is capable, but you have to admit he can be both a hero and a villian.
