Banner to be unveiled before Tuesday night’s KU-Gulf Coast game

New, bigger banners memorializing Kansas University's national champions - and a new "Beware of 'the Phog'" banner - were unfurled in Allen Fieldhouse in this photo from July 2006. A new banner commemorating the 2008 national championship will join these four Tuesday night.

Aldrich shines in second half

When Cole Aldrich is on the floor, life is much easier for the Kansas men's basketball team.

Many months after a trip to the White House — and several weeks after both a ring ceremony and unveiling of a temporary national-title banner — comes the final tribute to Kansas University’s 2008 NCAA championship basketball team.

It’s today’s 7:45 p.m. unfurling of the official ’08 championship banner —identical to the 1922, ’23, ’52 and ’88 banners currently hanging in the north Allen Fieldhouse rafters.

“To hang another banner will be cool. This one is permanent, the one that will hang forever,” KU coach Bill Self said, noting the Jayhawks would remain on the court to watch the banner ceremony before the CBE Classic game against Florida Gulf Coast.

Tipoff is 8 p.m., with a live telecast on ESPNU.

“I think it will be something great,” said KU junior point guard Sherron Collins. He scored a team-leading 16 points in Sunday’s 71-56 victory over UMKC. “Every time something like this happens, it makes me think of the team we had last year and makes me appreciative to be on a team like that and to finally win one.”

Tonight’s game will mark the first of the season for Gulf Coast, which returns two letter-winners from a 10-21 squad that tied for eighth in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Gulf Coast, which is located in Fort Myers, Fla., is led by senior guard Delvin Franklin, who averaged 9.2 points a year ago and scored 16 in an 89-58 exhibition victory Nov. 4 versus over Ave Maria. The Eagles also have Nebraska transfer Kyle Marks, a 6-7 forward, and 6-1 Michigan transfer Reed Baker.

Two teams from Gulf Coast’s conference pulled off shockers last season. Belmont stopped both Cincinnati, 86-75, and Alabama, 85-83, while Mercer beat Southern Cal, 96-81. Also, former Atlantic Sun member Gardner-Webb (now in the Big South) downed Kentucky, 84-68.

“If they can do it, we can definitely do it,” Franklin told the Naples Daily News. “I think we’re going to surprise some people this year.”

Seventh-year coach Dave Balza likes his squad’s attitude.

“This group is pretty good about believing they can beat anybody,” Balza told the Daily News. “But we have to make them understand what it’s going to take to do that. If we keep it under 10 turnovers, we can win this game.”

As far as KU, Self said before Monday’s practice he may change at least one slot in the lineup of Cole Aldrich, Quintrell Thomas, Sherron Collins, Tyrel Reed and Brady Morningstar.

“I told our guys, ‘If you want to start, it’s not that complicated to me,’’’ Self said on his Hawk Talk radio show. “The guy that can guard the other team’s best big guy, one that doesn’t make Cole have to guard him, will start. The guy who can guard the team’s best perimeter player, so Sherron won’t have to, will start. We need those guys in the game (not committing fouls). To me that would motivate our guys, that ‘All I have to do to start is be a great defender.’ We need a couple guys to emerge to that.”

During the KU/UMKC broadcast they said they are going to hang it in the middle. And in the media guide it is shown in the middle. Are they really going to put it in the middle? I think that's kinda dumb. 1922, 1923, 1952, 1988 and 2008 would look much better.

I used to watch, or record, or watch and record and watch again every KU basketball game. Now there are five games being shown on ESPNU this year that is on a premium sports tier of Direct TV that I am not going to subscribe to.As of this day I am five games less of a fan than I used to be, and I assume that is probably the case for a lot of others. Dumb move guys. How can this be a good thing for KU basketball?

i agree, I used to make it a point to watch every game, every year. this is the first year that I can remember that so many games will be on a channel that not everybody has. I can understand the money thing, especially with the tickets in AFH, but to diss the fans that follow through TV? come on.

Agreed, as well. How can I see games from Chicago? Any good web streams (free or pay) available to watch from PC?

It's $15 for two months of the sporte tier on Direct TV. After that drop it.Five games for $15 is a good deal I'd say.

Believe it or not, living in central Florida and purchasing the ESPNU package is the only way I get to watch these games. This might be the case for most Jayhawks outside of the midwest. On another note, these kids will have to grow up fast or it will be a long and possibly very disappointing season. UMKC and now Gulf Goast players feel as if they can beat Kansas - in Basketball - in Allen Fieldhouse!!! WTF!?!? The first game was a bit difficult to watch but I have faith in Coach and the players he recruited.RCJH!!!

On a totally different topic, I really don't like the new website's design. It looks so sterile -- so corporate. It's college sports for god sakes. It may serve better function but not form. I miss the blue banner on top.

I think I like the overall behavior and structure of the new design but I agree about the top, it would seem like it lost its identity along the way...As for the banner, I would hope that they place it at the end of the chronological string like the first post suggested.

It's good to be Sherron and Cole. "After you're done learning to play D; go grab Sherron and Cole some lunch". I'm just kidding with that last quote, but you got to love Self's sense of humor.

I would like to see the banner set in chronological order as well. I mean i understand the "want" to put it in the middle to show how important it is/was in how much it means to all of us. But no one championship should be held higher or more importantly than others. Thats just my thought on it. I'm going to love seeing it hanging up there no matter where they put it. rock chalk!

I agree with HawkFanEddie. Hang the banner where it belongs: after the 1988 banner. Putting it in the middle tries to send too much of a message. It's like dancing in the endzone. It's always classier to act like you've been there before. Which we have. And though I'm sure unintended, I also think hanging the banner in the middle is a bit disrespectful to the teams of '22 '23 '52 and '88. We should look at the 2008 championship as no more important than any of the others. It's just one in the line of championships in our rich history. So, let's keep the message simple, confident and understated: Winning national championships is just something we do at Kansas.Hang it on the end where it belongs. It'll find it's way to the middle soon enough.

Yes, this espnu really upsets me also. I am not a tv junkie and I get cable specifically to watch the games. I just got it two months ago and was crying with excitement for the season to begin. What depression I felt when I realized I could not watch the season opener. If they put the banner in the middle that would be ridiculous, even implying we won't win another one! Where is the next one going to go! It has to be on the end, waiting to be surrounded by the next one!

I have ESPNU which is apart of the DirecTV "Sports Pack". You have to have ESPNU for a minimum of 30 days. I cancel it every year once college basketball is over with. It's $12 a month and you get all the fox sports channels. Worth it in my book.

The DirecTV Sports Pack will often allow you to see games on the FSN channels that aren't being shown on ESPN's Full Court package as well. Definitely worth the money if you love college basketball and have DirecTV.

Ttownhawk, I don't agree that all the championships are equal. The first two were voted on by a committee. The last three were earned on the court. I wished the NCAA championships were so designated on the banners. Leave the Helm's banners if we must, but designate the NCAA championships as such.

You know what? Instead of complaining about the games being on ESPN-U, do it the cheap way and listen to them on the radio. Bring up LAZER 105.9 on the Internet if you don't live in or near the state of Kansas. I listen to my games on 610Sports in Kansas City.

Not that it counts, but I vote to hang it in a very prominent, visible place for this season(off the scoreboard), then move it in its place with the others at the end of the season.

Let me get this straight... We hang the National Championship Banner on a night we're playing Florida Gulf Coast, and the game is being broadcast on USPNU, which many KU fans don't have or don't even have access to. Who the hell are they paying to make decisions like this? That's just stupid!
