Self on UMKC
Kansas basketball coach Bill Self doesn't expect an easy time tonight against UMKC, a squad that dropped its season opener to North Dakota, 61-56, Friday night on the Kangaroos' campus.
"They played us well here last year, and we had a pretty nice team," Self said. His eventual national champions led by 10 points with 8:41 left before storming to an 85-62 victory.
"I respect their style of play," Self added, referring to "a lot of back-cutting, a takeoff of the Princeton-style offense. You have to get to their three-point shooters and not give up layups, which is easier said than done."
UMKC's best shooter is 6-foot-4 senior Dane Brumagin, who hit 45.1 percent of his threes last season en route to a 17.1 scoring average. Brumagin - he scored 11 points versus KU last year - scored 11 points off 5-of-13 shooting versus UND.
Big night for Davises
Two members of the Davis family will broadcast tonight's 7:30 p.m. game. Bob Davis is in his 25th year as KU radio play-by-play announcer. His son, Steven, a former KU hoops student manager, is in his first season as voice of the Kangaroos.
Steven also is voice for the K.C. Royals Double-A affiliate, the Northwest Naturals of Springdale, Ark. Bob is one of the Royals' announcers.
Crazy tourney
This game is actually part of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic, which does not have a usual tournament format. KU will play host to UMKC tonight and Florida Gulf Coast at 8 p.m., Tuesday. The Jayhawks also will play Washington at 9 p.m., Nov. 24 at Sprint Center, and either Florida or Syracuse at 6:45 p.m. or 9:15 p.m. on Nov. 25.

Bob Davis is the best play-by-play man in the country. Honestly, he deserves some national attention for that. He's a huge part of Kansas' sports personality. Soooo many great calls over the years.Very cool that his son is going head-to-head with him tonight. How can I hear that online? I get KU's call on KLWN. How about UMKC?

Washington lost their "first round" game of the CBE. They fell to Portland at home. Looks like UW has their work cut out for them.

I can't agree more about Davis. He really is the best and we are so lucky to have someone as good as him. The only other guy in his league is Keven Harlan.

To KGphoto and Strikewso: I love Bob Davis. Love his over the top "swiiishhh!!" calls, love that he's been here for 25 years, but I'm sorry, he is one of the worst play-by-play guys in the country. Most of the time you don't get a good idea of what transpired during his calls. It's all so vague with big Bob. His football work is the worst. Love the guy, but he's not one of the best.

i agree bob is passionate but not one of the best in the country, he loses track of whats going sometimes, but i agree there is nothing worse than a broadcaster who doesnt show emotion

Not that I could really knock anything about Bob Davies but on a national level he is a pedestrian play by play guy at best. He benefitted by comparision being teamed up with Max Falkenstien, the poster child for the Peter Principle. What I do like about Bob is that he is unabashed "homer" and lives and dies with the Hawks. The heck with the cool, calm professional approach; give me a guy who cares. You know what, maybe he's not so bad after all. And you have to admit, MAX was very "unique"!!!

Davis has lots of emotion and is a die-heart Hawk, but he gets confused way toeasy. There is a reason he is with the Royals and Hawks for so long. No way to move up to the big gigs.Football and basketball move to fast for Mr Davis. Baseball is his speed for a pro league. He os OK for college, but would never say he is one of the best. If you live or travel in other parts of the country you realize the shear amount of talent that is available.

Bob Davis is one of the absolute worst radio play-by-play basketball announcers I have ever heard. He fails miserably at describing the game in a timely manner, giving the listener no sense at all of what is actually happening on the court. He was OK as the Royals TV announcer, because the viewer can see the action, and Davis was fine at interjecting a useful comment or two. But radio play-by-play for basketball?Pathetic. I pity the people who have to rely on his description of a game on the radio.

My mom made sure I learned two things growing up:1. The Golden Rule2. If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything.Good thing she raised me before the advent of message boards.

WilburNether: You may be right about Bob getting names mixed up sometimes, but at least he's talking about the game--unlike your big-time announcers with all the "talent" who are likely talking about other games or teams altogether. I can follow game action easily by listening to him, and usually mute the TV and turn on the radio. I don't even mind the delay. And when he gets too carried away Chris Piper calms him down. I like listening to those guys. Sorry you don't appreciate them.

I'm a little shocked at ANY Bob Davis complaints.Flahawk: who said anything about moving up to "the bigs"? That's exactly why I love him. He doesn't need the bigs. Fox Network will hire any idiot with a catchy tagline, which is exactly why Harlan made it. "Oh baby, what a play"! Please. Radio isn't meant to be fast. It's an art, not a race. I get everything I need from Davis, and it has nothing to do with his reaction time.I really have no words. If you don't like Davis, you don't like college ball.
