KU hoops target Snaer to decide Wednesday

Blue-chip basketball recruit Michael Snaer, who last week said he'd wait until the spring to pick a college, has had a change of heart.

Rivals.com's No. 11-rated prospect said Sunday he'll choose between Kansas University, Florida State and Marquette at a yet-to-be-determined time Wednesday at Rancho Verde High in Moreno Valley, Calif.

"I want to get it out of the way. I think it's that time," Snaer said of finalizing his college choice.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound shooting guard said he eliminated two schools Sunday - UCLA and Missouri.

"It was tough cutting Missouri. I know a lot of the players there," Snaer said.

"It's pretty close. I might have one school ahead of the others," he added, not revealing that school.

"It's going to be a hard decision. I look at the coaching staffs, the players, how hard the teams work."

Asked specifically about KU, he said: "They have a good chance."

Meanwhile, Rivals.com's No. 3-rated player, Xavier Henry, will bypass the Nov. 12-19 signing period and will choose between finalists KU and Memphis sometime this spring.

"He did want to (sign early) at first. Circumstances happen," Xavier's dad, former KU player Carl Henry, said Sunday night.

Xavier suffered a fractured cheekbone in an Oct. 22 automobile accident and had surgery last week.

"He's out four to six weeks. He's taking medicine every day, resting, taking it easy. He'll take his time. He'll make his decision at the end of the season," Carl Henry said.

Carl Henry, who averaged 17.1 points and 6.4 rebounds in his 61-game KU career (1982-83, 83-84), said Xavier "likes the players and coaches at both schools equally."

This is reminiscent of the recruitment of Carl's older son, C.J., who orally committed to KU in the spring of 2005 only to sign a professional baseball contract after being selected by the New York Yankees in the June draft.

"My older son did the same thing," Carl said of bypassing the early signing period. "We thought Xavier would sign early ... except for the accident."

C.J. Henry is now a freshman guard at Memphis.

"He likes it there," Carl Henry said, noting C.J. "stays out of it. We all realize it's Xavier's decision."

KU and Memphis would not be waiting on Henry's decision if the NBA allowed high schoolers to head directly to the pros.

"He would have," Carl said of his son bypassing college had the rules not changed a few years ago. "I wish they could go directly from high school (to pros). If they are ready - if their bodies are physically ready - they should be able to go. His body is together."

Xavier and other "one-and-done" players have the option of heading to college or Europe for a year before putting their names in the draft.

"Some don't want to go to Europe. It's a long way from home for kids who are in high school," Carl said. "We've had offers to play in Europe. If a kid is not even through his senior year of high school, why would you even consider Europe right now?"

Two top high school seniors will definitely sign with KU on Wednesday.

They are: Thomas Robinson, a 6-8 power forward from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H.; and Elijah Johnson, 6-2 from Cheyenne High in Las Vegas.

KU has two scholarships to give in recruiting. Coach Bill Self has said he would like to sign three or four prospects because of the likelihood of players leaving for the NBA.

KU targets Dominic Cheek, 6-5 from St. Anthony High in Jersey City, N.J.; Lance Stephenson, 6-5 from Lincoln High in Brooklyn, N.Y.; and John Wall, 6-4 from Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C., will make their decisions in the spring.

¢ Next up for Jayhawks: KU, which pounded Washburn, 98-79, Tuesday, will play host to Emporia State at 7 p.m., Tuesday in Allen Fieldhouse. It'll be KU's final exhibition game of the preseason. Emporia State will play Wichita State tonight. The Jayhawks will open for real against UMKC at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Snaer Assessment: Snaer looks like a Hawk to me. He turns down UCLA, probably his first choice, and Missouri. He adds Marquette and FSU, or at least keeps them on the list. UCLA must have had no room for him and must have told him so, but to be nice, let him decline UCLA in public. Howland signals other LA kids that he's a good guy. Missouri is just a lousy place to go and Snaer woke up and said being with old pals should not determine things. Self must have quickly signalled Snaer that he could 99% sure have a ride in the fall period, if Snaer could wait a couple days for another player KU was involved with to clarify; but that KU wouldn't guarranty Snaer a ride if Snaer waited till spring. Why would Snaer pick Marquette or FSU over KU? He wouldn't. But with X Henry suddenly pushing back his move, and some of the other one and dones (Wall, Stephenson and Cheek) having to be recontacted and reevaluated , too, Snaer is taking KU while the taking is open. Marquette and FSU made the list in case one of the super blue chips (Wall, Stephenson, and Henry) were to clarify and announce for KU suddenly in the next few days.

(continued)Small Okie World Dept.: Snaer chooses between KU's Bill Self, Self's former Okie State coach Leonard Hamilton now at FSU, and Marquette's Buzz Williams, an Oklahoma City University star in 1994 and Billy Gillispie's assistant at Texas A&M. How does a young man from LA get wired into the Okie Baller mafia? Good question. I haven't found anything, but I have two guesses. One would be that Snaer may have a relative who has already played for someone in the Okie Baller mafia. Another would be that Kermit Townsend, KU's man on the Left Coast, has been recruiting Snaer since Snaer was in 8th grade or so. Over the years the bond has built up. As this final year of recruiting unfolds, it becomes clear UCLA is Snaer's first choice and KU is a strong second. But UCLA decides to "go in another direction," because some guys don't jump to the L as expected, and they land one or two they weren't sure about. Snaer opts for KU, but suddenly KU says KU still has to wait a couple more days for things to clarify with a couple of other players. Regardless, KU makes it "understood" that KU wants Snaer badly and will cover his risk of waiting by "strongly recommending" him to Leonard and Buzz, if anything at all were to prevent KU from signing him in the next couple of days. Snaer has met Leonard and Buzz--two tireless Okie Baller recruiting machines themselves--previously and likes them. Leonard and Buzz jump at the chance of being bumped up Snaer's list and confirm he is gold, if KU falls through. Snaer, beginning to see how dicey actually getting signed is (hurt feelings about UCLA going in another direction), and beginning to see first hand that while he is very, very good, he is not viewed to be quite as good as three others KU (and everyone else) is hot for, and so maybe he agrees to announce "KU, Marquette, and FSU" as his new top three and see if KU will sign him in a couple of days. of course all the above in both posts is entirely speculation and opining! After landing talent, that's what recruiting posts are all about, right? :-)Come on Michael Snaer. KU needs a ferocious, 6'5" lock down two in the worst way. You have KU written all over you. You are born to be a Jayhawk. I have a superstitious theory that certain guys have KU names and certain guys do not. Guys named "Podunkus Clinkett" go to places like K-State. Guys with strong, cool names like Brandon Rush, Russell Robinson, Paul Pierce, Joseph White, William Bridges, Wilton Chamberlain, and Michael Snaer go to KU. We like Mike.Michael Snaer, come on down!!!

I would have liked Xavier primarily because he is Carl Henry's son (a legacy and a great player), but his inability to decide, the fact that he seems injured fairly regularly (obviously not all his fault), and the fact that he is almost 100% one and done, I say welcome Mr. Snaer! ESPN-U should not be a deterent to announcing a simple choice between two schools. I hope Snaer chooses KU. He is ready and Xavier had his chance to choose. Xavier would be one and done and so KU or Memphis would be just a vehicle to the pro's for him. Afterall, There's no "I" in team and we won a National Championship without a one and done kid last year. And we beat the teams that had one a done kids like USC (Mayo), MSU (Rose), KSU (Beasley) and the year prior Texas (Durant).

The one thing I found interesting in this article is that if "X" had the opportunity to go Pro (NBA) he would. However, if the opportunity presented itself to go over to Europe and play........"It's a long way from home for kids in High School." Ha! I thought that was backward funny comment. He's mature enough to play in the NBA, but too immature to go over to Europe. He would learn quite a bit living and playing in Europe for two years then he would sitting the bench for two years in the NBA. No catering to young teenagers over in Europe. Just thought that was funny and interesting.

Maybe when Carl called Self to tell him Xavier wanted to wait until spring to announce, Self finally said "that's the last straw, we're going with Snaer"???You KNOW kids like Snaer who aren't considered THE very top players (as opposed to Wall and Xavier) don't really want to wait until spring to choose because they know it weakens their "negotiating" position. It's possible that Snaer told Self on his visit that he wanted to come here and Self told him to keep it under his hat for a few weeks while things shook out.Looks like things may have "shook out" over the weekend.

one thing many of you seem to be forgetting is that Snaer said he didnt want to play with X Henry because they play the same position....so what this tells me is that if Snaer does choose KU then we are done recruiting X...I wonder if Self is getting fed up with X and his little show he wants to put on, the real reason he doesnt want to choose right now is because his face is all messed up and ugly after the accident, but he really wants to hold announce via espnU....I am sick of X he is a selfish me first player and we would be better off with Snaer. If he does pick KU wedensday X might as well be a Tiger, X is a drama queen, and to be quite honest he isnt as good as Durant, Beasely or Rose....but he thinks he is.

I love how mad all these posters are that Xavier hasnt decided yet, so fickle. Kansas has had a ton of late signees that have been beloved, Rush, Arthur, Wright. Good things come to those who wait. Besides i think we could land Xavier even if Snear commits now. Especially if Sherron and Cole go pro, Tyshawn and E.J. at the point, Tyshawn and snear at the 2, Releford, Henry and Snear at the 3, and then rotate Morriss squared, T-rob and Quintrell down low, that would be a deadly rotation if all those guy learn how to defend.Also... Henry and Snear may be 3 and 11 respectively right now but that may change as well, They have their whole season ahead of them to get better, and if i remember correctly Cole was #1 in his class at one point, but had dropped to the 20's by the time he signed.

Or pound in a half court set, Ah wishfull thinkingbut just because their both listed at SG or SF doesnt mean we cant land them bothRobinson, Chalmers, Collins? all high school PG's landed in a 3 year period, all played together at KUWright, Rush, Downs, Galindo? I think waiting til Spring to sign is going to become more en vogue because the prospects hold all the cards in Spring. Think about it. Top players from the top programs are declaring for the NBA draft, teams have holes to fill. Maybe a team loses a guy they didn't think would leave (like us losing Julian a couple years ago). Now there's an extra scholarship out there. Top Recruit A is still on the board and hasn't signed. Why not give him a call, see if he's interested in filling the minutes formerly filled by NBA bound player X. That's the position that guys like Henry, Stephenson, Cheek and Wall will enjoy come Spring. They are too talented to not get offers, and once the NBA class clears out, there will be teams very excited about landing their services, if only for a year or two. That said, my favorite of that group is still Cheek. I know X is the smoothest scorer, and Snaer is supposed to be the best defender, but Cheek seems like the kind of guy that will rise to the top. He's proven his mettle against the best HS players, and always seems to be among the top. But he's not signing til spring, so I am more than happy to take Snaer now if he wants to come. He's no slouch. Maybe the best guard on the west coast. I'm not going to try and get into Self's mind as far as a rotation just yet, because I am interested in the 2008-09 Hawks, but Snaer or Cheek or Henry would be a GREAT addition.

To all posters who are calling X a "drama queen" or "me first" or "selfish"....You have no idea what you are talking about. You obviously have never watched him play live and in person. He is a very unselfish player, lets the game come to him, doesn't bring a lot of attention to himself (other than dominating the other team), pretty much carries himself with a calm and cool precense. Stop trying to label a person you obviously know nothing about, simply because he wants to hold off committing. As mentioned before, MANY previous recruits have had more "dramatic" recruitments and have been great players and loved at KU. Hinrich, Rush, Arthur, Wright, etc. I think those guys are pretty well liked and respected.Besides, JR Giddens was an early commit!

Self said he may have 4 because some 2 kids may opt for the NBA. The could still recruit X because Self often runs a 3 guard system for speed and increased on the ball defensive intensity. However, if Snaer chooses KU, I hope that Self will go for Derrick Favors or Kryl Natyazhko. We will need a center if Cole opts for the NBA. If Cole opts for the Pros and Snaer chooses KU then this is the perfect project for Danny. Derrick Favors!Article from ESPNFebruary, 2008: One of the most powerful high school players in the country, Favors attacks the basket and the backboard as well as anyone in the 2009 class. He is physically imposing, runs well and post up extremely strong. He plays very hard and rarely takes plays off. He is efficient, strong and attempts to dunk everything at the basket. He reminds me a little of Amare Stoudimire at that stage. He is a great offensive rebounder and it is almost impossible for players his own age to keep him off the glass. He is also a fairly good defender in the post, although he does allow guys to catch the ball deep against him. Favors does have a good 15 feet and in game, but can use some refining at that range. He also needs to develop a consistent post move to help his overall game develop. He plays and appears to be humble and hungry and has the ability to be the best player in the 2009 class.January, 2008: Favors entered the game (2008 Pangos Dream Classic) as the No. 1 ranked junior prospect in the country and with his performance here he solidified that ranking. His performance (see above) was scintillating and he has room for improvement as well. His frame is impressive with extremely long arms and he has some of the best hands I've witnessed on a big man. Favors approach to the game is terrific (never gets rattled) as he plays with an even keel at all times. He is a prototypical four-man prospect for the high-major level, but he needs to polish up his post moves and develop better fundamentals if he is to have that expected significant impact. He does have a solid left hand finish in the paint area, but most of the time he relies on his bounce to finish plays. He can step out and hit the 3-pointer but his shot is flat as he needs to smoothen out his release. Defensively, he has great timing and he moves his feet fairly well for a big. Favors upside is unlimited and it will be interesting to see his development over the next year.

I love how the headline is "KU hoops target Snaer to decide wendsday" but after the 1st couple paragraphs actually about snaer, height \ weight and some comments, It goes directly into a X story. I find that might be offensive to Snaer. Why commit to a team that can only talk about Xavier and others this was supposed to be about Snaer. Snaer who has the best chance at becoming a Jayhawk over X and cheek. We should be encouraging him to come to KU not sizing him up with players that might or might not even come here. I say lets do what we can to get him here wendsday. THEN go for the X story. If i were a HS prospect and i read all these comments about me on KUsports id prolly say F it and go somewhere else. Thank you MountainHawk and KUFanKam for being the voices of reason in a board full of judgmental jerks. It's amazing to me how easy it is for someone to prejudge a high school senior's choice to take his time when making one of the most important decisions of his life! For God sake, give the guy a break! Taking time to make a tough decision does NOT make someone a me-first player, selfish, or any other nasty adjective you can come up with. It means he wants to make sure he's made the right decision. I for one will welcome X if he chooses to come here and wish him the best if he doesn't. Common guys, show some class. Try not to be like the "fans" at KSUck or Misuse.

Snaer is a Jayhawk. The great thing with Self is there will still be room for Henry. Bank on it. Just like the class that fell together at the last minute with Rush and the national championship gang.

Haha, I was just thinking the same thing, fabolous_bg--Snaer does look exactly like Ray Allen. Hopefully he can play like him, too. Sounds like a good kid and someone I'd love to have as a Jayhawk.

I actually think that Snear will not pick KU. Marquette loses ALL of their guards after this year. He would easily be the feature player there. Same goes for FSU, they lose an NBA bound guard this year. But FSU is on the other side of the country. That "yet to be named" school may be the one. Could it be USC? Washington? If Snear does come to KU, several things would be set: We will not get X, that would be enough to push him to Memphis. We will be done with guards. If Cole goes pro, we will want another big. Bill Self likes his 5 bigs. We will also be very, very good with Snear, Robinson, and EJ.I still want X though. His pure scoring will work great with the team's busy D. What if we kept everybody from this year and added X to the 2009 recruiting class? I think it would look something like this:PG: Sherron Collins/EJ/TT/Reed/Applesg: tt/ej/Reed/AppleSF: X/Little/Marcus MorrisPF: Marcus Morris/Robinson/QC: Cole/'Keif MorrisThat is a deep, mean rotation.

Bryan1-9 -- It's not fair to single you out, as the idiocy of those that post here is widespread, but your all-caps "shouting" puts you a little above the fold today. When did Snaer say he "will not play with x...end of story?" Was it before or after he said of Henry, "It makes no difference to me where he goes. If we're going for the same spot, I'll just have to beat him out."

Let see what happens at Arizona. If John Calipari takes the job, then memphis may cease to be a player for these guys, and X may be in Arizona.

I just like the fact that our school even brings consideration from top prospects every year now. I remember getting excited about incoming players back in the 90s from time to time, but now we have an honest chance at the top recruits every year. I hope both X and Snaer come...the competition would make them both even better than they already are.

I was impressed with Snaer at late night. He seemed to be enjoying himself more than any of the other recruits. He actually seemed to think it was worth his time and wasn't just texting during the whole show.

Cal will not go to Arizona. He is reloading at Memphis and if he went to Arizona, he would have to start from scratch. Arizona is not an attractive job right now. I hope Snaer does sign with us, an awesome athlete that would contribute for years, not just one. Come on down Mr. Snaer, we welcome you with open arms.

Interesting that most everyone posting thinks an announcement this week from Mike Snaer means KU gets him.For some reason, I just can't quite get there. I think he's headed to Florida State. And that he won't announce it on Wednesday, but a few days later.

I say we sign the guy. KU is more than Xavier Henry and I really think we would be fine with Snaer. Although, I must admit, I would absolutely HATE it if Henry ends up going to Memphis. I live there and cannot stand the ignorance of the fans here.

Calapari is not gonna take a 2 million dollar pay cut to go to Arizona . I have to agree with you kdurham07 . Memphis will be loaded if they could indeed sign X .Along with WALL,(no doubt he will be a tiger ,thanks to worldwide Wes and Derrick Rose recruiting him hard . must be nice to have others doing your bidding ) and the other players they have coming in could be the top class.

JayhawkSlant.com is reporting that Snaer is not going to decide tomorrow after all. Also, Florida State appears to be his choice from what he has said. John Wall is likely going to Baylor as they signed his AAU coach to be an assistant.

Mutt627, jayhawk slant is not definitive in their reporting. They are phishing to get you to subscribe and read the article. Snaer was very positive on Kansas after Midnight Madness. I think that Self was waiting primarily on X to sign before the end of the fall signing period. X wants to prolong the decision. It is unfair to put the other kids on hold because X wants to waver and play out his decision on ESPN-U. Self probably called Snaer and extended the scholarship to him if he wants to sign now. If Snaer decides on Kansas, Self can concentrate on signing another big man. I think he goes for Derrick Favors or Kryl Natyazhko. Either of these guys and we have a great recruiting class. I would rather have Favors and Snaer than X and the publicity.

that's good logic except we're loaded at the big man slot already. If you want a national championship in 2010, you sign both Snaer and Henry. All of the supporting blocks are there at KU and Self will make room for at least one more after Snaer commits.

truefan - I agree 100% with your 3:59 p.m. post above. There is no shortage of ridiculous comments being posted on this particular thread/subject. I'm sure a majority of the other D1 BB programs across the country would kill just to be in consideration for one of these top prospects...let alone 4 or 5! What a great "problem" to have. Having said that, I hope we sign both Snaer and Henry. Now that would be ridiculous!

thephog88,Thanks for catching that gaff. That's right. Self played for Paul Hansen. That is what Self's and Hamilton's entry in Wikipedia indicate.Actually, thid makes my argument much tighter! Thank you sir, I will have one more paddle! :-)

kufankam,Your sarcasm is pretty funny. I think many fans are just reacting a little too strongly or being too anxious over the uncertainty. While I don't think we absolutly need X Henry to achieve great things the next couple of years, but I love for him to come because of Carl Henry. I was a big fan of his father, and it'd be fitting for X to come and contribute to the KU tradition.

It has never, ever been reported Snaer said he would not play with X.I was at Late Night and EJ, Snaer, and X were all very animated. In fact X was the most, doing the chant and getting into it.Getting Snaer would fantastic, any way you cut it.Also, do you people not understand XH just went through surgery late last week and will be laid up for several weeks? He's all out of synch and with drugs on board and recuperation he probably can't think everything through. So, give it a frickin break and leave the kid alone.

KEITH is right. XH had surgery and needs the time to recupe. Give him time. He comes from great stock, great parents, and it is wise of him to wait until his head clears after this accident. X and Snaer will learn to play together. Coach Self is an expert at turning individuals into a "TEAM"! Remember B Rush was "selfish and uncoachable" before he became a Hawk? Ha!The main thing is that when X and Michael get a vision of the championship team Coach is putting together, they'll show up in crimson and blue.

I couldnt agree more. Would be nice to get both at KU...

Exactly. Great comment. This is what premier athletes do to get better. They WANT to be challenged. Every day. That's why the dribble drive offense against a weak 2nd string at Memphis' practices along with a weak Conf USA is less than appealing to a player(s) who really wants to excell in the NBA. Pair that with little national TV exposure and you can see why both Henry and Snaer would love to play at Chamberlain-Naismith-Pierce University.
