Williams, Pitino move past 1989 dispute

— Roy Williams was upset that Rick Pitino was still using a full-court press in a blowout. Pitino then got angry at Williams for adding to the lead.

Eventually, Pitino got called for two technical fouls, and the coaches exchanged angry words.

The strange events from that Kansas-Kentucky game during the 1989-90 season were revisited Friday, a day before Williams and North Carolina faced Pitino and Louisville in the East Regional final.

"Roy is a good guy. There are no ill feelings," Pitino said.

There were ill feelings at the time. On Dec. 9, 1989, undermanned Kentucky visited Kansas in Williams' second season with the Jayhawks. Kansas took control early, and Pitino used all his timeouts in the first half to no avail.

Williams cleared his bench in the second half, but Pitino still was pressing. Kansas continued to pour it on in the 150-95 victory.

"Rick and I talked about that. It was some unfortunate things and probably my fault more than anybody's," Williams said. "We've had some discussions many years ago about that and put it behind us. We've played golf together. ... I have zero - zero - problems with Rick. The only thing I have for Rick is a great deal of respect, and I mean that sincerely."

Well, it may not be the most sportsman like thing to say but I think it's awesome that we put 150 up on Kentucky using the end of our bench. You can't blame the kids at the end of the bench for playing hard. If Kentucky couldn't play hard enough to stop our walk-ons then they deserve to lose by 55.

one of my most memorable moments in KU BB history, after years of getting beat up on by UK, we layed one on good, it was wonderful, especially when pitino made it easy to keep laying it on. The anger by the UK fans towards us made it even more special. They have us in quantity in the series rivalry, but we have them on quality~!!!!!!

Lots of great story lines from the teams remaining in the Elite 8. If ucla, unc, and Kansas advance, it will be a clash of traditional basketball titans. Roy Williams potentially faces his old team. Kansas may eventually see Padgett again. Perhaps another all-conference championship game if Kansas and Texas both make it. Kansas' 20th anniversary with Danny Manning, of all people, present as a coach. Potentially the first time all four number one seeds advancing to the Final Four.

Good stuff!

I agree. Lot's of interesting storylines. This will be one great Final Four. The whole tournament so far has been fun to watch.

Wasn't it Bob Knight that said -
It's my job to beat you, it's your job to stop me.
or something like that?
