Kansas University's basketball players who answered 7 to 7:15 a.m. wake-up calls on Game Day last Thursday in Omaha, Neb., will be allowed to sleep much later Friday in Detroit.

"We will try to keep them in bed as long as we can," KU coach Bill Self said Monday.

This week, he must figure out the best way to handle a 9:40 p.m. (Detroit time; 8:40 CDT) tipoff for the Jayhawks' Sweet 16 battle against Villanova at Ford Field.

On Thursday, KU opened the tournament with an unusually early 11:25 a.m. game against Portland State.

"It is a ridiculous time to play. At the same time, we realize television dictates everything," Self said of the late-night tipoff. "If we are fortunate enough to win, we'd then play Sunday in an early-afternoon or mid-afternoon game (not yet determined).

"It's not just at our region. It's that way at all regions. We play games at all times of the day during the year in large part as preparation for the NCAA Tournament. We have never started one at 10 o'clock, though," Self noted.

The Jayhawks were sharp in downing Portland State, 85-61, in their late-morning meeting with the Vikings.

KU also beat Boston College, 85-60, in an 11 a.m. game in Massachusetts and stopped USC in an 11 a.m. game in California. The latest the Jayhawks have tipped this year is 8 p.m., winning against Nebraska, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas State and Texas Tech, and losing at Texas.

For some reason I don't mind the late tip. If we beat Nova, the game won't have gotten over until about midnight and then it's a short turn around for the 2:00 game against the Davidson/Wisconsin winner. To get to the Final Four I think the less time you think as a player the better. The coaches will do their job, but as a player the short turn around bodes well for the Jayhawks. The only thing I can see where it might be a problem is if Sherron knee gets banged in the Nova game and there isn't much rehab time to get it fixed for the regional final game. I will be there with flying colors rooting them on in person. I hope this is the year we get to the Final Four.

Much like you said about the turnaround time shaw, what I hate about the late tip is all that extra time to sit around and think about what lies ahead. That works both ways, though, and I think after all this trying to hype up Villanova, we're going to walk all over them. Every team that starts off good keeps running into the same problem against KU. Depth. If they aren't getting exhausted, they're getting in foul trouble. If they aren't getting in foul trouble, it's because the refs are letting them play, and thats when our defense looks really good. As usual, the only chance they have to keep it close is for the refs to let THEM play, while calling it tight on the other end.

From the mouth of a biased KU fan :)

c'mon guys, we still have to go out there and play the game. yes we should win this game, but if we start thinking of Wisconsin or Curry...excuse me Davidson, then we could be in for some trouble. Nova's a good team from a great conference. can't overlook anyone, especially this time of year.

I don't like the late tip for this reason. Wisconsin plays a slow, grind it out style. That means that the game will probably take longer with all of the fouls that will likely be called in that game. Which means instead of a 8:40 (CDT) tip, we may end up with a 9:15 (CDT) tip. Which means that we won't finish up until 11:30 CDT, or 12:30 in Detroit. That's a late night of basketball, followed by an off day, then an afternoon game.

Ya we definately want to play Villanova like its April 7th and we're in San Antonio. To be honest, I think we will have to play Davidson(AKA Curry) to go to the Final Four. I don't care who we play. We aren't losing. Bring on UNC to go to the Championship. I want to see if Hansborough can hang with Shady, Djacks, The big Russian and Aldrich. I dont think he can. Rus Rob, Sherron and Mario will shut down Ty Lawson.

I can't wait til we beat Roy and UNC.

Rock Chalk!!

As a diehard Badger fan, (but a bigger Jayhawk fan) don't worry justanotherfan about Badger games taking extra long. I've seen this team 20 some times this season. They play stout defense without fouling. If anything their offense draws fouls (warning Arthur, Jackson, etc) as they make more FTs than the opponents attempt. OF course this is looking ahead which we don't want to do either.

wissox,

I say that more based on the officiating this postseason (most games operating at more than a foul a minute pace) than anything. We know that Curry is going to try and attack the Badgers defense and they are going to get after him. Given the way the Tournament has been called, that's going to lead to a lot of fouls on the perimeter. If that happens, the stuff inside will put people on the line earlier in the half, which will lead to more free throws for both teams (since Wisky will look inside where they have a distinct advantage). That will stretch the game I think. I hope you are right and that doesnt happen.

Why is it that after virtually all of these articles there's a comment from someone complaining about someone else looking ahead to possible future matchups? Here's the thing: we're fans. we can look ahead five years and it won't make an ounce of difference in friday's game. Sorry for the yelling. That's really getting old.

Let's also keep in mind that Georgia didn't seem to mind playing two games in one day! This isn't just a KU problem - it is a problem for everyone left dancing. Two hours extra rest of Wisconsin or Davidson will not make a difference. And if it does, then we don't belong in the FF anyways.

Pep rally is Friday afternoon, 4:30-6pm, at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn. After the win on Friday, pep rally Sunday will be two hours before tip off. Dearborn is roughly halfway between Detroit airport and downtown.

You must not have looked too hard, 4chewnut, considering that this was in the article:

"'If we are fortunate enough to win, we'd then play Sunday in an early-afternoon or mid-afternoon game' (not yet determined)."

That's interesting, shaw. I had been under the impression that those types of things are determined after they know the matchups -- what with TV deciding things, as usual. Maybe that's not the case and the 2:00 time is already set. (Do you mean 2:00 eastern time?)
