Kansas University's Russell Brorsen (81) drags down Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt in this file photo from last Sept. 15. Brorsen enters his senior season as the leader on a proven defense - and as one of the team's brightest scholars.

Russell Brorsen is struggling.
It's a Tuesday afternoon, just past 2, and the Kansas University defensive end is stationed in an office in the bowels of Allen Fieldhouse, trying to explain the intricacies of a course he recently completed - organic chemistry - that he found to be considerably challenging.
"How can I put this : " he says.
He is choosing his words carefully, trying to ensure that the class is adequately described - "My professor might read this," he says - while simultaneously attempting to avoid the kind of playful banter teammates have been known to heap upon their scholarly teammate.
After umm-ing and uhhh-ing his way through a brief synopsis, however, he throws in the towel - apparently resigned to the fact that it is a physical impossibility to protrude coolness while discussing the particulars of carbon-based molecule interaction.
"Whatever I say," he says with a sigh, "I'm going to sound like a giant nerd."
And so it is that Brorsen, he of the near-perfect grade-point-average and mop-top haircut, enters his senior year not only as a leader of a Jayhawks defensive unit that returns nine starters, but as the team's resident Einstein - the player designated by teammates as the second Jayhawk most likely to succeed. (First on the list, if you're wondering, is current Tampa Bay Buccaneer and soon-to-be-millionaire Aqib Talib).
In the past two years, Brorsen has been named to a total of five all-academic teams, including ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America First Team as a junior last season. He was tapped as a Big 12 Academic First-Team selection the past two years, and upon completing his undergraduate degree in chemistry, he intends to sign on for four years of dental school.
"He'll cure some disease or invent the ever-burning light bulb at some point in his professional career," assures first-year Kansas defensive-line coach Joe Bob Clements. "He's a very talented individual."
A first-team all-state football player and state weightlifting champion at Stillwater (Okla.) High, Brorsen was largely overlooked following his prep career. He chose Kansas over Tulsa and Navy; hometown Oklahoma State passed on the 6-foot-4, 240-pound lineman.
After moonlighting as a tight end during his freshman season in Lawrence, he returned to his natural position on the defensive line before the start of the 2006 campaign.
As a junior last year, Brorsen collected 36 tackles and an interception and was the only KU defensive lineman to notch at least one tackle in each of the team's 13 games. His best effort, however, was reserved for the biggest stage, when on the fourth play of the Jayhawks' 24-21 victory over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl, Brorsen slipped through the Hokies' front line and introduced himself - rather intimately - to opposing quarterback Tyrod Taylor for an 11-yard loss.
The sack set the tone for a surprisingly impressive evening from the Kansas defensive line and leave coaches hoping for an encore of a senior season.
"I've only been around the kid for five, six months, and he's as tough a football player as I've ever been around," Clements says. "On the field, off the field, I don't have to worry about him. The thing about him is that you can tell him about something he can work on, and he's going go work on it."
Entering what surely will be one of the most intriguing seasons in school history, Brorsen's sights are set on duplicating the success of last season's 12-1 team, during which the Jayhawks finished the season ranked seventh in the country - the highest postseason finish in school history.
"I think there's been an effort to make sure everyone stays grounded," Brorsen said. "I'm just looking forward to playing that first game. See if we can win some games again, get on a roll again. I'm looking forward to it."

If the guys stay humble and saw wood, they will roll...my prediction...10-2..or better. We will beat MU and TU. The OU game will be up in the air since it is down there. We'll have to be careful not to overlook CU and NU.Brorsen is a heck of a student-athlete and should be one of our team leaders.

Seriously though, I think the Kansas University football team would be a perennial contender in the Dade County high school football system. I mean that.

In that league KU would be #1 and Florida would be #4, right behind FSU and Miami.

What imaginary league are you talking about that includes those teams? Are you just talking about the state of Florida? I can't understand your nonsensical ranting. Do they not teach basic literacy skills in the Kansas public education system?

Appalachian State can come on here and talk smack if they want. They went to a Big Ten school and beat em. If memory serves, Michigan went down to the south and beat Florida. If you want to come on a Kansas board and talk smack there is one simple task for your team to complete-Dont lose a bowl game to a Big Ten school. If you lose a bowl game to a Big Ten school-SHUT UP.

I'm actually serious. At the University of Kansas we consider the Big Ten, and everything associated with it(Lee Corso & Ryan Greene to name a couple) the biggest joke in college football. We don't demean ourselves by carrying on football conversations with those associated with the Big Ten, and certainly not those few that have actually fallin victim to them.Do you Gators have any idea how much ammunition you guys gave those bloviating idiots on ESPN. We know the SEC is a damn good conference, and we loved watching you destroy THE Ohio State to end the 06 season, so get through next bowl season without losing to a Big Ten school and you can come back and we can talk football.Until then though, we just arent interested in anything you have to say.

Brorsen has been an absolute steal and hidden gem getting him from Stillwater. He needs to keep these guys fired up and looking forward to building on to their accomplishments and not resting on what they did last year. Go get em Russell!

Why would a Gator fan be here talking smack on our team unless he knew that they were good enough to be worthy of his competition?Actions speak louder than words.

Were we talking about Brorsen? F the Gators. Who cares?Brorsen is another diamond in the vast Mangino rough. I'm glad the OKS Hookahs didn't want him. They don't deserve him. He's a scholar. That means you don't play in the Big 12 south. You play because it's fun, and it's a challenge. Not because you have 4 kids and you need a meal ticket. Or cuz you dint pass SA tease.Oklahome State! Because I'm a man. I'm forty!!!... and I'll gradumate perty soon.

Missouri is unimpressed with Kansas. Kansas may be better in basketball - but when it comes down to a head to head comparison across all discplines, the Mighty Mo' is superior. Kansas is for hippies.

BillJonesSr you must be stupid or crazy. Actorman had it right the only thing that Mizzery does better or more of is owning slaves and doing drugs. MU fans, students, and athletes have no class, brains, or education. KU has MU on pretty much everything except baseball, and wrestling. Because this year just see if the Jayhawks don't take back that drum in football. So please just shut up and get off this site.

What a great story. It sounds like Russell Brorsen could be really successful....if he went to Mizzou. Shame to have a man of his caliber rotting away at kU. And who predicted kU would finish 10-2 or better? That person must be smoking something way stronger than any drug ever smoked in the history of the world. Let's pray for his health. Don't do drugs man.

Last year I said 10-2 and we went 12-1. I'm being conservative this year when I say 10-2 with wins over TU and MU. It's all about TEAM.

Yes, I've looked at the schedule, and I tell ya what, we have a really good TEAM and a great coach. Nothing will suprise me. I expect our team to be really, really good...good enough to win the Big-12 title.I'm with you all the way, Fabio. Some guys are born voyeurs.

A. Winning a national championship is not a prerequisite for talking smack.B. I'm not a Big Ten guy. My name is "GoBadgers" because I really love badgers. The animal. Not the team.C. You have a good team. Take out the "really." And you have a fat coach. Take out the "great." Fine, I'll give you "good coach." But leave the "fat."D. My prediction? 8-4 or 7-5.

If our coach is only good and not great then why is it that while he was with Oklahoma they won a NC, and when he came here we were a terrible football program and now he has taken us to three bowl games and been eligible 4 times and won the coach of the year over every single other coach in the country. Also 8-4 and 7-5 are possible records for us but so is 10-2. KU had one of the best defenses in the country last year so good that we made even V-Tech's defense look bad, and we are returning 9 of those starters. Our defense is going to be better than ever and thats what wins games and thats why KU will be one of the best teams in the country because teams will find it VERY hard to score on us and our defense will be backed by a very good offense as well that will cause other defenses fits. KU has been down towards the middle and bottom for a while and yeah I know why people think we are still there but just look at the facts and you will see that KU has a great coach, a great team, and they are going to have yet another great season.
