Not-so-cheap seats

New luxury section princely, pricey

Williams Fund members tour a new outdoor luxury seating section that will be installed behind the south end zone of Memorial Stadium. The 56-seat, 28-stool section will include 22 flat-screen televisions, an exclusive hospitality area with complimentary beverages and upscale buffets and luxury chair-back seating. Williams Fund members were given a sneak peak at the area Monday. Cost: $2,500 for a "club recliner" or $2,200 for a "club stool."

Memorial stadium introduces 'Touchdown Club Seating'

Imagine watching Kansas football at Memorial Stadium while sitting in your favorite recliner. It's a reality this fall when the Orange Bowl Champion Jayhawks return to action.

Ah, the spoils of success.

On the heels of a 12-1 season highlighted by an Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech - and the consequent rise in excitement about the prospect of Kansas University's 2008 football campaign - KU announced recently that it would be implementing a new outdoor luxury seating section, to be constructed behind the south end zone of Memorial Stadium.

A preview of the university's "Touchdown Club Seating" was offered to fans Monday evening during a three-hour tour held to spark interest in the prospect of on-the-field seating, which will be available next season.

A total of 56 "club recliners" will be sold for $2,500 apiece, while 28 additional "club stools" are individually priced at $2,200. The cost includes complimentary food and drink, easy access to one of 22 flat-screen televisions and an opportunity to purchase the recliners following the completion of the season.

The seating section is similar to those featured in multiple major-league baseball stadiums, according to Kansas associate athletic director Jim Marchiony, who added he was unaware of another college football program that offered the same style of fan seating.

"In the first 15 minutes, someone bought four tickets," said Marchiony, citing the team's recent success as a factor in the seats' attractiveness. "So I think this is going to be a very attractive option."

Indeed, the response Monday was generally positive, as those in attendance cited an unrivaled proximity to the field and the comfort of watching a live game in conditions similar to watching from one's own living room.

"It beats sitting on the bleachers," said Tom Horner, a fan and former Jayhawks football player. "The comfort is a big thing -especially for the older folks."

Guests also were treated to a tour of the soon-to-be-completed Anderson Family Football Complex, the most popular stop of which was the super-sized office of head coach Mark Mangino, which is only slightly smaller than the state of Wyoming and comes complete with a personal bathroom/shower facility.

"Look at that shower!" gushed a gray-haired woman, taking a moment to examine the rest room. "What a great shower!"

The backbone of the evening, however, was the novelty seating. At least 12 seats had been sold as of Monday night, Marchiony said, and the university hopes to sell the remainder of the 84 total seats before the Jayhawks' Aug. 30 season-opener against visiting Florida International.

"I think it appeals to people who just want a different experience at a college football game," Marchiony said. "These 56 people will experience KU football in a way that 49,950 people won't."

¢ Mangino returned to his former hometown of New Castle, Pa., last weekend to the kind of fanfare worthy of a national college football coach of the year.

In addition to taking part in a parade in his honor, Mangino was the featured guest at a local charity golf tournament.

"It's always good to be home," Mangino told the New Castle (Pa.) News. "You get a chance to hang out with people I only see maybe once a year.

"It's been a great weekend," he added. "I've been very fortunate. A lot of people in New Castle have been very kind to me. It's more than I could ever expect."

¢ KU recruiting coordinator Brandon Blaney and University of Miami defensive coordinator Bill Young went head-to-head in a recruiting battle over Riley Spencer, a 6-foot-6, 254-pound offensive tackle from Hesston High, according to Rivals.com. Blaney scored the victory when Hesston chose Kansas over the Hurricanes, Kansas State and Texas Christian.

¢ Kansas Athletics, Inc.'s board of directors has until 5 p.m. Wednesday to vote on a resolution to borrow $45 million from the Kansas Development Finance Authority for a project to make renovations to Allen Fieldhouse, Wagnon Student Center and Parrott Athletics Center.

In an electronic letter, board members were informed that:

1. The prinicipal amount of bonds will not exceed $45 million and is expected to be "around $37 million."

2. The interest rate will not exceed 6 percent and is expected to be close to 5 percent.

3. The term will not exceed 30 years, and the plan calls for a 25-year term on the bonds with "the expectation that they could be paid early as pledges are fulfilled."

Nobody in the athletic department doubts the resolution will pass.

¢ Former Jayhawk football player and current New York Dragons DB Ronnie Amadi will be on the active roster for the wild-card round of the AFL Playoffs, when the Dragons take on the Dallas Desperados at 7:30 p.m. on June 27. With three more victories, his team can earn a trip to New Orleans to play in ArenaBowl XXII on July 27.

Even if I was filthy rich and could drop 5K on season tickets, I just couldnt justify spening $700 a pop to watch KU football. The idea of spending that kind of jack to watch KU kick the crap out of Fla. Int. or NSEW Louisana Technical College is just mind boggling.

Nut, fans of college programs all across America pay that much for luxury seating to watch their teams beat the crap out of some no name team. There's really nothing mind boggling about it. College sports has been this way for most of the past 2 decades. KU's finally catching up and we finally have a team to watch that's worth paying those kind of prices.

That's a pretty good idea, but it's a lot of money to spend on terrible seats. There's a reason bleachers never worked well there - of course, having flat panel TV's in front of you to watch the action will help a great deal. I hope it works and that there are enough rich people to fill em up. In fact, I hope all the rich people who take up the great seats on the 50 will now move down there.

Guys, stop all the complaining over these seats.First of all, if you don't want to sit in them, don't pay for them. It's as simple as that. Next, I am sure that some fans take offense for the remarks that the fans in the luxury box are not real fans or that this has become a status thing to be seen at KU Football games. Don't kid yourself, this isn't LA. As for the fact that you have to be middle or lower class to "really enjoy football" that is ridiculous. I am sorry that some of you feel that wealthy people are above rooting for a school they love and probably attended which afforded them their current lifestyle. At the very least, you should be happy that KU has such affluent alumni to support the athletic program in the way it does and provide us with the entertainment we have. Before I see any posts about how I am probably one of the snobs that will be sitting in those seats, I want to clue you in to the fact that I am a college senior and obviously don't have the money to sit in those seats. But I am also a diehard 'Hawks fan and an economics major making my view of sports as business quite different from some of you. If you want to criticize KU and every other college for trying to make money in a sport that traditionally loses the institution money (think of all the scholarships along with facilities and salaries of coaches) then go ahead, but at least have the courtesy to be educated on the topic you choose to critique.RCJ National Champs Football '09!

phoggy, dpu, LA, bringheat -- Dead on. I have been around a couple of athletic depts in my time, and I can assure you that the people who sit in these seats just to 'be seen' and could care less about the program are few and far between. Most of the donors who give to the University are first and foremost great people, and just as die hard as the blue collar fans and students with less $$ in their bank accounts are. Think about it, if you are gonna shell out big time coin for things like this you probably are doing it out of love and borderline obsessive fanhood for your alma mater.Every other big time football school has options like this, so get used to it if you want to be constantly successful. These seats are just a by-product of a football program going in the right direction. Memorial, although in a great location and beautiful, doesn't have the tradition of Allen, where you can get away with not having luxury boxes as long as the rock chalk chant still echoes and you see a who's who list of basketball hanging from the rafters along with 5 NC banners.I for one love to see these seats put in. You can't have your cake and eat it too--if you want to keep seeing BCS Bowl trophies you'd better get used to major construction and re-vamping of Memorial. And for the record I may never put together the scratch to sit in those seats--I like my seats halfway up on the eastside 45 yd line just fine. My grandfather and my father played football at KU and I've been going to home games since i was in pampers. For me and those like me, this is a long time coming. God bless KU Football. Wyoming is less populated, lower tax, less liberal, bigger (and size does matter), better school system and a higher income. If I was a neutral observer, I could see myself sitting back in one of those recliners, but I just care too much about KU Football to sit back like Im watching a Royals game or something.College football was never meant for the fans of a school to sit back like they are watchin a baseball game.Anyone else notice the fans over on the west side of the stadium on third down they will stand up and start clapping like the pitcher is just one strike away from getting out of the inning. When the players on the sideline are raising the roof, that means they want you to put your hands around your mouth and make as much noise as you can. Memorial is not Kauffman. The players have taken it to the next level and beyond, I think its time for the fans to follow their lead.

Finally, we are producing winners based on the reality of the power of money. On a side note and to help soften the pain of those jealous "poor" fans and alumni, my family sat in the south on-the-field end-zone bleachers in the late-70's, early-80's; they sucked.
