Spending a summer in Lawrence after a 12-1 football season that included an Orange Bowl Victory has been a joy for the Kansas football team.

Reesing ready for start of season
After a sophomore season that featured 33 touchdown passes and nearly 3500 yards through the air with only seven interceptions, what possibly could be next for junior QB Todd Reesing and the Kansas offense?

Since he first came to Kansas University in 2004, senior linebacker Mike Rivera has seen his share of ups and downs.
As a red-shirt freshman, he watched the Jayhawks struggle to a 4-7 record. In 2005, Rivera, then a reserve linebacker, helped lead KU to a 7-5 record that included a victory over Houston in the Fort Worth Bowl.
A sophomore season at 6-6 was quickly forgotten after the Jayhawks' stellar 12-1 finish and Orange Bowl victory last year.
Despite his roller-coaster ride through the KU football program, Kansas City native Rivera is determined to break the cycle and help lead the Jayhawks to two consecutive winning seasons.
"I have confidence in saying we're going to do a good job this year," Rivera said Tuesday at Big 12 Media Days at Kansas City's Marriott Downtown. "We're going to win games, and we're going to be at a bowl game."
Rivera acknowledges that things have changed for KU football players around Lawrence after last year's success, but he doesn't get too comfortable with the newfound appreciation.
"You definitely get a lot more kids asking for your autograph," he said. "But the message is just to keep on working, never be satisfied. We had a good season, but that's behind us now. This is a whole new year, and we have a whole new team. You can never get complacent. You need to be humble about it, but always look to the future and see what we can do this year."
The Jayhawks' ability to repeat last year's breakthrough performance has been the question on everyone's lips this summer, especially in light of a more difficult schedule.
But Rivera isn't worried. In fact, he welcomes the challenge.
"I think every year you're going to have to prove something," he said. "We don't want to play in games that aren't challenging. We want to play in games every week that are big. It's going to be hard, but we're looking forward to it. We've got a lot of good players this year, and we're looking forward to showcasing them."
Rivera and his fellow returning linebackers, seniors Joe Mortensen and James Holt, are among those good players.
"Me, James, and Joe, we're going to be the three-headed monster," Rivera said. "We know each other really well, what our positives and negatives are. It really helps us to be a successful unit."
The Jayhawks also will be aided by new players coming up the ranks. Asked about sophomore linebackers Drew Dudley and Justin Springer, Rivera got wide-eyed with excitement.
"I can't wait to see what they're going to do," he said. "They're learning so fast. Their freshman year, they were way more advanced than me and Joe and James ever were. These kids are going to be really good. They're students of the game, and also, physically, they're made to play linebacker."
Rivera also said a strong defensive line would help KU's linebackers this season.
"I think a lot of players are going to step up this year," Rivera said. "Kendrick Harper, Caleb Blakesley, Jamal Greene. Those guys are what makes it easier for us to make plays. We appreciate everything that they do."
With nine starters returning to KU's defense, Rivera said not much would change from last season. The biggest difference will be the replacement of defensive coordinator Bill Young with Clint Bowen, who previously served as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.
"Coach Bowen is going to be a great defensive coordinator," Rivera said. "He's been around the system just as long. He's been here since day one. There's not going to be any sort of drop-off. He knows the defense in and out."
Rivera is as confident in his defensive teammates as he is in the Jayhawks' success.
"I love our defensive group," he said. "I think we're a bunch of crazy guys that just want to run around and make tackles, make plays, make interceptions and have a good time. I can't wait to see how fast and how explosive we're going to be this year on defense."
But he realizes the defense can't shine without substantial work.
"We can't just assume that we're going to be the best defense again," Rivera said. "We've got to make sure we're doing the things we need to do to be a really good defense. We need to make sure we're studying our game, studying our plays, making sure that we're all on the same page so we can work as a unit."
So as KU gears up for its season and tough match-ups against South Florida, Texas, Oklahoma and, of course, rival Missouri, Rivera says bring it on.
"They're going to be gunning for us," he said. "But at the same time, we know they are. We're still going to be a solid team. We're still going to make good plays, and people are still going to have to stop us. So we're ready for the challenge."

The team should do very well, and JayhawkNation will be most proud when the season ends in another bowl trip and bowl victory.Having said that, can we get rid of those hideous new KU band uniforms - the black ones that look like a CHEAP junior high version? It's a disgrace, an embarrassment. The old band uniforms were stately, sharp and reflected KU's school colors: crimson and blue. The current black uniforms must go! The appearance (it's the uniforms) of the band is a laughing stock around the Big 12 conference. If KU football is to be consistently on the national scene, the appearance of the KU band should be, too.

I agree with njjay regarding the band uniforms, and since we're on the subject, how about adding a few more trumpets, drums, tubas, etc. I love our band, but they get blasted every year when Nebraska, OSU, or even Iowa State comes to town (not to mention we have Texas at home this year and they will send a huge traveling band). And I'm not ragging on the band, it's just because those other bands outnumber KU sometimes 2-1.Come on Big Daddy Lew, show the band some love this year!!! Pregame could be so much better with a bigger marching band.

ESU, the band plays a huge role on the road. If you want to say you're serious about football to other schools, the marching band is definitely one way to do it. I don't care about the uniforms, but if the band was louder it would have an effect on the perception of KU football. Like it or not, Marching Bands and College Football teams are linked. And no, I'm not some band geek.

The band is made up of volunteers. We used to have a huge band and then the football team got so bad that they quit volunteering for the band. It has increased in size the last couple of years. Hope to see a big jump in numbers this year. The athletic department doesn't have anything to do with the uniforms or the make up of the band that is the music department. And I think it is appropriate to discuss the band on this site.

The band is going to grow by about 80-100 members.***ESU,you can stuff it, the band was important enough to Coach Fambrough that he gave them the game ball after a game at Iowa State!!!!"When I found out Missouri had more band members than we have, I just about went to pieces," Fambrough said. "Otto and I both loved the marching band and talked about how important it is, about how as far as KU athletics, the marching band is really our 12th man. We talked about raising funds for more band scholarships. Well, anytime I wanted anything like that done, I'd turn it over to Otto because I knew he would get it done."http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2008/mar/11/time_reflection/Fambrough has done more for Kansas football than you've ever dreamed ...so, go to hell!!Sincerely,7YH,Kansas Tuba 1993 and 1994

Great to hear we will be increasing the #s for the band. I was just thinking that KU will be going to Nebraska this year. I think at least in the past NU lets the visiting band play their fight song or Alma Matter at halftime while the Nebraska fans clapped and pretended they are classy fans. I'm sure that was easy to do when NU was up by 30 at halftime (I think we all have memories of that occurrence in the past), but won't be as much fun for them this year after KU has put it on 'em for a half.I'll be at that game, so I'm hoping to hear KU's band rock out a little Fighting Jayhawk nice and loud.

the band actually had to beg for donations from people around the communit in order to get the new uniforms. The music department either could not or would not give them unforms. The old ones, though they may have looked sharp from the stands, were actually shabby, falling apart, and band members had to piece together parts of the uniforms when their own were no longer wearable. I agree, though, I think the band and the football team are inextricably linked, and I would love to see the marching band grow to its former glory. There is nothing like watching the bad streaming through corridors and down onto the field before the game (do they still do this?) I am a 1997 KU grad.

pleiker - Vivid memories! 10 years ago I was there attending our game in Lincoln, and other than checking out their stadium for the first time and hanging out with some fellow Jayhawks, it was not a pleasant experience. I thought we shoe-horned people into their seats at Allen Fieldhouse - - if you haven't been before and unless things have changed, go inside the stadium early, and either take a chair-back with you or rent one there, and plop it down on your seat number. Otherwise, you will be squeezed out, especially if you have an isle seat.Marching bands and college football go together like beer and brats, or spaghetti and meatballs, or steak and potatoes, or:

when I went to the movie theatre to watch The Dark Knight and in the previews they had the drumline competition, I got pumped about college football because I thought they were going to show a marching band.I was never in the band, but I can't get enough of them during the pre-game and halftime shows. The marching band has to present the football team to the crowd, and we want them to be as big and as loud and as good as any marching band because our team is as big and as good as and football team out there.

For my $, it doesn't get any better than the band coming and playing the bars the night before gameday. Granted, I was usually umpteen beers deep at the Wheel by the time they played, but I don't think I've ever been more jacked up in my life than when I was pumping my fist right next to a trumpet blasting out the fight song. During that 5-10 min period on Friday nights when the band played at the bars before home FB games, I was immediately catapulted into a beer/adrenalin/school pride induced euphoria that I can best describe as pure unadulterated joy.Gamedays/College Campuses are nothing without Marching Bands, and this is coming from a tried and true jock -- the KU Marching Band gave me some of my best memories of college.

Jocks and nerds.... you obviously have never been around the Band.... until you have run out of the tunnels and down the steps, run in place in the end zone, then tried to blow air through a horn to make music...while marching instep with intense concentration... etc... without bending over and grabbing your thighs to hold yourself up... well, this is not an activity for the weak... try it sometime. Actually just go out and participate in a couple of rehearsals the week before classes begin... you'll have a new appreciation for the time and effort put in by all the "Band Nerds"... oh, and show up at a rehearsal and call some one a band nerd and see what that gets you!

njjayhawkWould you volunteer money for new band uniforms? The money doesn't flow in the music department like it does for athletics. Besides, it is less about how they look and more about how they sound. And coincidentally, the more money the department has the more musicians it can accomodate. In my opinion the sonic explosion from the band should echo or foreshadow the beating we plan on unleashing on our opponents. It makes for that much more of an enjoyable experience on game day. That being said both sides need support of the fans.

Allow me to throw my late two cents in:Obviously, the marching band's importance cannot be understated. I've become a bit disappointed with our band over the last few years but believe that as our football program grows, so to will the band. As anyone who has ever marched before knows, it is not easy work and requires the dedication of people who get very little appreciation for the job they do.That being said, the new uni's are horrific and it would certainly be nice to see Lew throw some of his gobs of money their way even if it isn't his responsibility. Besides, they occasionally show tidbits of the halftime show on tv (I personally wish they would show it all) and it would be nice if they were looking good. Now on to football, I'm calling for an 11-1 season with our sole loss being to OU. I'm thinking this year's game with Mizery will be just as important but after the experience of last years hooplah and the environment of Arrowhead we'll play two halves of football much like the second half of last years game.

Score another one for the "band geeks." I too appreciate the time and effort they put in to make the college football experience what it is. Fox does a good job showing the band. Watch the Orange Bowl video-they showed cuts of both bands in the pregame, in our case playing a full rendition of "fighting jayhawk" and a little of the alma mater. Plus there were probably at least 50 scenes of 5 sec or so each during the game where they showed the band. I can't remember about halftime. My wife, who played in her HS marching band, definitely appreciated the attention the tv gave to the band during that game. So yes, it's important that they look good. Lew has more money than any AD has ever had before, and I think sprucing up the band is just as important as sprucing up the team and the stadium.

The band uniforms have a number of different front's to the jacket, hence why they often wear something different at halftime than pregame. The new uniforms aren't going anywhere anytime soon, as they're still in great shape and the old ones were completely and totally unsalvageable. Frankly, I think they are one of the few college uniforms that don't look like they're stuck in the 1970's era of marching band.As far as the numbers thing goes, give money! Call the alumni association and tell them you want to see the band grow and make it happen. Until very recently, the band received a stipend for participation which increased every year you were involved. It wasn't much, but now even that has been taken away due to a lack of support. When I was in the band, it cost me almost $200 by the time all was said and done. It's no different than facilities. If we're going to make one year of success turn from fluke (which we all know it's not) to tradition, we need all the things that go along with it. Facilities, coaches, fans and a marching band that represents the university at the highest level.
