Kansas seniors Joe Mortensen and Marcus Herford were named Thursday to the preseason all-Big 12 football team, as voted on by the media.

Mortensen, an all-Big 12 first team selection at linebacker a season ago, finished ninth in the conference in tackles per game (8.15) and tied for second in tackles for loss per game (1.15) as the Jayhakws finished 12-1 and earned their first BCS bowl victory in school history.

Herford, meanwhile, was the only other Kansas player to earn preseason all-conference honors. His 28.65 kickoff return average in '07 ranked second in the Big 12 and 15th nationally, and he was voted the Big 12's special teams player of the year following the season.

The team's only unanimous selection was Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree, who caught 134 passes for 1,962 yards and 22 touchdowns in '07.

Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel was voted the conference's preseason offensive player of the year. Oklahoma defensive end Auston English earned the defensive player of the year nod, and Colorado freshman running back Darrell Scott was projected as the newcomer of the year.

Reesing lands on another watch list

Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing landed on his second watch list of the off-season Thursday when he was named as a potential contendor for the Davey O'Brien Award.

The junior from Austin, Tex., was one of 31 college quarterbacks named to the list, which annually honors the nation's top signal-caller.

Reesing threw for 3,486 yards and 33 touchdowns as a sophomore last season, while completing 61.9 percent of his passes and breaking 21 school records in the process.

Last month, Reesing was named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award.

Brown to be honored by Packers

Former Kansas lineman Gilbert Brown will be inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame during the organization's 38th induction ceremony on Saturday.

A former second-team all-Big Eight performer with the Jayhawks, Brown went on to play 10 seasons with the Packers, from 1993-99 and from 2001-2003. Brown played in 15 playoff games with the Packers, finishing his career with 292 tackles in 125 games.

Thanks for representing with Reesing, Keegan. I think that the surprise of the year may be Crawford, so here is to wishful thinking that he becomes the newcomer of the year!Rock Chalk Jayhawk, lets get it started NOWps. G Brown played from 93-99, not 83-99 for the Pack.

Big Gilbert and Dana Stubblefield were a load in the '92 Aloha Bowl, dominated Bring 'em Young's o line.Congrats to G, a well deserved honor. Nary a running back made it past the line of scrimmage running up the middle when he was in there for the pack.

Is there any way to report a story that comes out during the day other than labeling it "breaking news" every time? I mean seriously, this is how many days in a row with so-called breaking news?

  7. 5DecadeHawk (anonymous) says…

Word definitions according to the Lawrence Journal World:"Breaking News"News that is fractured or otherwise incorrect. The reporter was hurrying so much that he will undoubtedly include errors in the article. Such stories should not be taken very seriously.Other past examples include:Mangino in negotiations with West VirginiaBrandon Rush Court datesBasically... any time the LJW has Breaking News you can count on it having errors. It's what Tabloid Newspapers thrive on... They put out the story before getting the facts straight. It also reduces the credibility of every story ever written by the tabloid and causes people to question the integrity of every reporter working for the tabloid.Congratulations LJW. You're keeping up your tabloid journlistic traditions.

  8. aledell (anonymous) says…

Seriously. I think the phrase "breaking news" has been tainted by sensationalist local newscasts as well as cable news outlets like Fox News and CNN. Like if you turn on Nancy Grace it has a constant scroll that just says "breaking news-breaking news-breaking news" repeatedly. That's how the LJW is making me feel with this nonsense. Is there a rule against just adding stories to the Site without labeling them this way? I mean, today some people voted on who'd be the best Big XII players, the votes were counted and the results were published.Something that is done at the same time every year that happens as expected again this year is hardly "breaking news."

  9. troutsee (anonymous) says…

    Law off the LJW.

  12. HowMuchRice (anonymous) says…

I'm so mad about this "breaking news" label, I want to fight someone.Seriously, who gives a crap?

  13. chuckberry32 (anonymous) says…

IMO you should lay off the LJW for this one. At least we get notified about something and get to read the simple story about it as opposed to hearing about it somewhere else (if we are lucky) or just having to wait until tomorrow's release to find out. I've just started assuming that "breaking news" means "KU related story that has developed recently of which might be of interest to some" Granted it would be nice to have a different category like "this just in" but I'd rather have the story than have to wait.

  14. Displayhawk (anonymous) says…

I see where Nathan Scheelchaase from Rockhurst has committed to Illinois. Hate to see quality talent leave home, but at least he didn't go to the Tiggers!BTW, the Davey O'Brien award is a JOKE! Doesn't do any good to vote! Our guy Reesing was the top vote-getter last year, but didn't even get invited to the award ceremony as one of the top three QB's in the nation!Fan vote only counts for 10 percent! The rest is decided by reporters and other so-called experts who "expertly" predicted Kansas would finish in the bottom half of the Big 12 last year!

  15. patton6 (anonymous) says…

What I want to know is why did the LJW replace Ryan Wood with a Methzouri graduate in Dugan Arnett?I mean, look at this d-bag... http://journalism.missouri.edu/news/2...

  16. GoBadgers (anonymous) says…

    Hahahaha. Good find patton6.

  17. KUFan90 (anonymous) says…

Bring back Wood! We want Wood! We want Wood!

  18. hawk_bred20 (anonymous) says…

What happened to wood btw? Did he move up in the world?

  19. number1jayhawker (anonymous) says…

Ryan Wood is no longer with the LJW? Bad decision by the LJW if they let him go. Why in the hell hire a mizzou grad when there is a home town University that is ranked as high or higher than it's interstate rival in the School of Journalism?????????

  20. GoBadgers (anonymous) says…

I hope you're not implying that the kU school of journalism is better than Mizzou's.I never read anything by this Ryan Wood character, but he couldn't have been that good.

  21. 5DecadeHawk (anonymous) says…

A better question is who did all the Mizery supporters running the local paper interview for the open positions?Did they interview any local talent?I'm not just registering a complaint, but I'm offering a constructive solution. i wonder if anyone in the LJW is intelligent enough to even listen to it?How many ex-KU athletes have good writing abilities? I know I've read plenty of items written by them over the years (It's would be a difficult search inside the LJW). Some have written books. Mark Ewing is still over at WIBW doing his broadcasting gig. Toss in Chris Piper and David Lawrence. The talent exists for anyone that bothers to open their eyes and see it.Has one EVER been interviewed for an important open position by the LJW?Shouldn't the local paper at least interview ONE? Some KU Athletic alumni have the writing skills. It would be intelligent for the LJW to seek them out. It sure would be a breath of fresh air to have the perspective of someone that's actually been inside the locker room in Allen Fieldhouse or Memorial Stadium. The talent is obviously out there, but the egocentric cult running the LJW is too prejudiced to allow it to happen. Oh ... hey... Breaking News... I heard a rumor once that the LJW hired a minority once to empty trashcans. Was this their attempt to get local representation on the staff?Sounds like Mizery logic. As long as the local paper is run by people that don't care about the local community we can expect a sub-par tabloid paper.

  22. BillJonesSr (anonymous) says…

Did I mistakenly hear that someone compared KU's journalism school to Missouri's? So, apparently KU, overnight mind you, hopped over Northwestern and Columbia University to be in the Top Spot with Mizzou? Wow. Just kidding, that didn't happen. Just another garbage revelation from a garbage school. Seriously, you are not better than us at anything academically, yet we rank the top nationally in Journalism and Vet Sciences... but you guys sure can get some kids that can put a ball in a hoop. You know what, go back and plow your field or try to stir your sister's guts or whatever you idiots do there. You're lucky to have a writer from Mizzou. It's like having a writer from the Times (that's New York Times... it's the city out east... do you get papers like that in you dumb, petchuli smelling city?)

  23. GoBadgers (anonymous) says…

5DecadeHawk: So you would rather have some kansas born and bred chickenhawk fan boy write biased stories glorifying kU instead of someone doing intelligent objective journalism?Suit yourself...

  24. 5DecadeHawk (anonymous) says…

I submit BillJonesSr's last post as a perfect example of the kind of grammar and writing ability that comes out of Mizery.Capitalization is something that just gets sprinkled on as if it's topping for an ice cream cone.Subjects and predicates are in disagreement. An incest refrence is included.Yes, that is a quality representation for Mizery. Thanks for your post Bill. With posts like that, why bother bashing Mizery. They do a fine job of showing themselves for who they are.

  25. Displayhawk (anonymous) says…

Why are these Missouri morons on here???I have never had any inclination to go onto their website and see what they are saying about Jayhawk fans!Basically, I just figure what goes around comes around! All schools, regardless of where they are located, or what their social status is, have SOME fans who are idiots! (Mizzery just seems to have a whole lot more!)

  26. GoBadgers (anonymous) says…

Hey 5DecadeHawk: You spelled "reference" wrong. You would think someone making a post about grammar would make sure he or she didn't make any mistakes. Am I right people? Am I right?! hahahahahahahahahahaha!

  27. 5DecadeHawk (anonymous) says…

Yep. I sure did. I made a one letter mistake.I admit my mistake. When is the last time a Mizerian admitted one? Before the Civil War?

  28. GoBadgers (anonymous) says…

I don't know. You would have to ask one. You see, I am not a Missourian. I went to Mizzou though. I can tell you, based on my own personal experience interacting with Missourians, that they are a very pompous bunch. They don't easily admit mistakes. I'd say before the Civil War is probably fairly accurate.

  29. BillJonesSr (anonymous) says…

5DecadeHawk - I forgot that this post was going to be critiqued and deconstructed by a professor for a grade. I thought it was just some good and proper back and forth between two schools arguing their merits. I guess you win. Go ahead and put your hair in a ponytail, grab your birkenstocks, hop in your hybrid car and educate me on the ways of the universe. Then, full of self-satisfaction, you can go and read your Ayn Rand and drink your latte "with room."I'll take my state that and our extra 5 electoral votes and make a difference. Our school/state is better.

"LJW! You posted a story! Damn you!!!! Damn you all to hellll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"Excellent post, JayViking. Sums up beautifully the constant bashing by some nitwits. And speaking of nitwits, I think it's time to get back on your medication, 5Decade. Just out of curiosity, is there ever anything, at any time, that you like on this site??? And if you hate it so much, why do you keep reading everything???

Don't like it- don't read it. Pretty simple. I for one appreciate this site.

  35. stravinsky (anonymous) says…

You put the Ozarks as a plus to missouri? Not to go to much against the grain, but I've lived in both Columbia and Lawrence. And everything between St. Louis and Colorado along I-70 is pretty much the same. As far as states go, they're pretty much the same. Except that Kansas City professional sports teams have winning records about once every decade. Damn rams and cardinals. The missouri J school is good, but it's debatable whether it's "elite" anymore. Word is that it still pulls a lot of weight based on reputation and not as much for being amazing anymore. Still, it's the second most prestigious J school outside of the midwest. It's not Northwestern, but it also doesn't cost $35k per year. Not that I care that much about J schools. Only thing I read in the Kansan is the Free For All anyways. So shush. Both teams are going to be really good next year, it'll be interesting to see how the game turns out. Hopefully less cold. rock chalk.

  36. actorman (anonymous) says…

"We were actually with the north (we just had confederate sympathizers who formed militias)"Which of course explains why so many Misuse fans still celebrate Quantrill and his butchering of the people of Lawrence.

  37. aledell (anonymous) says…

Wow. So I thought I took some heat for my criticism of the breaking news label. Meanwhile the arguments on this thread turned pretty heated and awesome! Now if you'll excuse me I need to go invade some Mizzou boards and talk some smack.Oh wait that would be stupid and pathetic!Rock chalk and keep coming back Tiger fans. You guys are making things pretty interesting on here.

  38. 5DecadeHawk (anonymous) says…

Feel better now actorman?Actually the thing I like best about the site is the people who post that care a lot about KU and Lawrence. As I have previously said, if there was another newspaper that would allow me to stay up to date on my 2nd hometown, I would go there. It's the takover of the local paper by people that don't care about the local community that I have a problem with. If that bothers you, actorman, too bad. I don't see anyone holding a gun to your head forcing you to read anything I type.At 11:22am I offered a constructive suggestion about what the LJW could do to better represent the local community. That suggestion was immediately attacked by the Mizery scum. That's hardly a surprise. Let's face it. About the only thing they have to their credit since Quantrill raided the town is the fact that a group of ruffians have crossed the border again and taken over the paper.I guess they feel threatened. If the Lawrence paper were actually to represent the Lawrence community rather than disrespect it, the mizery in Mizery would get even worse. Is that even possible?

  39. Kman_blue (anonymous) says…

BillJonesSR: "We were actually with the north (we just had confederate sympathizers who formed militias)"WRONG, after the pro-Southern governor and pro-Southern state legislature of Mizzery were forced to flee the capitol in June 1861 by the Union Army, fleeing gov. Claiborne F. Jackson called the state legislature into session where they enacted a secession ordinance. It was recognized by the Confederate congress, and Mizzery was admitted into the Confederacy on November 28, 1861.Mizzery: WRONG side of Civil WarKansas: RIGHT side of Civil WarOh and I got another one for ya.BCS Bowl wins:ku: 1mu: zeroku/Kansas wins! Why a Mizzery fan is on this site talking smack is beyond me. I'd rather be dead than reading any crap about Mizzery and their teams anywhere.
