Gary Bedore’s KU basketball notebook

Jackson's pro debut

Former Kansas University power forward Darnell Jackson scored 10 points off 4-of-9 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds in the Cleveland Cavaliers' 97-94 loss to the New York Knicks on Monday at the Las Vegas summer league. He suffered four turnovers and committed five fouls while starting and playing 28 minutes in his pro debut. Former KU guard Billy Thomas scored six points off 3-of-10 shooting for the Cavs.

Robinson's pro debut

Former KU point guard Russell Robinson came off the bench to score seven points off 2-of-4 shooting (he made three of four free throws) in Houston's 100-97 victory over Phoenix in Las Vegas. Making his pro debut, Robinson dished five assists against one turnover and had two steals in 24 minutes.

Arthur nets 23

Former KU forward Darrell Arthur erupted for 23 points off 10-of-15 shooting and grabbed six rebounds in Memphis' 78-76 loss to San Antonio. Arthur, who had 26 fouls in Memphis' first three games, picked up five fouls Monday. Players are allowed 10 fouls before disqualification in summer-league play.

Not much playing time

Former KU combo guard Keith Langford scored four points off 1-of-3 shooting with two rebounds while playing just eight minutes in Denver's 90-79 win over Toronto in Vegas. Former KU and Oregon State forward C.J. Giles scored eight points with four blocks, four rebounds and eight fouls for Toronto in 22 minutes.

Miles shut out

Former KU point guard Aaron Miles had six assists against one turnover, but did not score while playing 15 minutes in Dallas' 88-74 victory over Minnesota in Vegas. Miles missed three shots while grabbing three rebounds.

If you post something about Giles, then what about Giddens? What is he up to?

sounds like the hawks are doing well in general.

Sounds like a decent debut for Jackson; of course we all know that he's capable of more offensively, once his teammates know his spots he'll shoot over 50%. And Arthur showed his team a little of what he can do AND didn't even have 6 fouls. Robinson of course put up solid Robinsonesque numbers, but unfortunately in Miles is any example those may not land him on an NBA roster.

shady and mario will end up being the 2 biggest draft day steals. its like NBA GMs forgot to watch the Final 4 this year.

Mario was a steal.

Arthur will need a few years of on the job training to try to learn how to play defense and how to stay out of foul trouble.

I think once Bill Self's players play a couple of years in the NBA (this being his first true class to go through his program from recruiting to completing), they'll prove their value and worth. I don't think we'll see slippage on draft day for KU players anytime soon. Mario and DA will prove to be excellent NBA players as will Jackson and eventually Kaun, not to mention what Rush will do. I'd think any HS big would be licking their chops to come to KU, to get tutelage from Danny Manning, and toughness from Bill Self. Jackson speaks well for how well bigs develop an KU, and guards excel on Bill Self teams.

--Giddens plays for the Celtics. The Celtics are not competing in summer league ball this year. Some people might find it interesting Giles is on a team.
Thanks, KUfan90.

Thanks for the updates, Gary. Do you have anything about Kerry Boagni's rumored NBA comeback?

Correction: RR will be the biggest steal of this years draft. He was not drafted and he'll make a team. Everybody needs an RR on their team. The guy can flat out defend and he makes few mistakes. Mario was not the only guard who handled Rose in the championship game. i believe RR took a few turns.

Russell, prove me right!!!!

Morgansraider,

Why are you busting GBed in le chops? All he did was give us some interesting updates on former KU players.

How's this for an update:

Wilt Chamberlain just lead Heaven's Angels to a 158 to 98 drubbing of Hell's Devils in a Summer Styxx league game. Wilt score 138 points, grabbed 98 rebounds, and handed out 10 assists thus accounting for his teams entire offensive output--a first in the Summer Styxx league. After the game, Wilt said that Satan had no game at all and that he could beat him at anything. Wilt was looking forward to getting back to heaven in time to say "Rock Chalk" at the Pearly Gates to the next incoming member of the Jayhawk nation.

-- Noppe. I've lost track of Boagni. He was a nice guy, though. I can take the rips, jaybate. Thanks for the support though. It's easy to blast people under fake names. Like somebody else posted, it's like high school around these message boards sometimes. Bullies that hide behind fake names. I'm a big boy; i can take it.

Personally, I, too, like the updates, Gary. Thanks.

The petty BS on the board the last few weeks has me counting down the days until Late Night.

Petty BS only the past few weeks? When has the internet not been filled, nay, overflowing with petty BS? It's depressing sometimes...

I also appreciate the updates and am astonished that Giles is being given a chance in the NBA after screwing up numerous chances in college. If Giles makes it in the league and Big Dub doesn't, I will be very disappointed. It will be yet more proof that people don't always get what they deserve. I don't necessarily want Giles to fail, I just want Wayne to succeed. And Brandon McAnderson too, for that matter!

Good point and good post bayarea.
And that's why I included Giles. Some KU fans might be interested in the fact he's actually on an NBA roster right now. Summer roster.

I didn't mean an disrespect when I asked about Giddens. I knew he was drafted by the Celtics... I just want to know how he's fairing in summer ball.

Once a Jayhawk, always a Jayhawk... it just might be sometimes the step-brother no one really likes to discuss, but they are part of the family tree after all.

Lebowski (anonymous) says...

While I disagree with the whole "once a jayhawk" theme... you leave here in bad standing, you're OUT in my book... I still like to follow those whose names were ever associated with KU... even if they NEVER came here. (Stevenson, Baron Davis, Malik Hairston)

The guys that left on their own accord (Downs, Galindo, Padgett) and those that had to leave because they couldn't stop screwing up (Giles, Giddens).... I may or may not necessarily be rooting for them or consider them Jayhawks, but still am interested in seeing how they do at other places.

Good deal, Toto. Sorry bout that.
I thought you were beaning sarcastic. My bad on that.
Nice post. I liked your stepbrother reference. Good stuff and my bad on misunderstanding your post.
Good post as well Lebowski.
I would think if there ever was a KU tie, it's good to keep track of said players.
