It takes 10 fouls, not the usual six, for an NBA player to be disqualified from a Las Vegas Summer League game.
Relaxing of the foul rules has been a blessing for former Kansas University basketball power forward Darrell Arthur of the Memphis Grizzlies, who was whistled for nine fouls Friday in his pro debut against New Orleans.
He had eight Saturday against Milwaukee and nine more Sunday versus the Los Angeles Lakers. The 6-foot-9, 225-pounder was asked Sunday if he was concerned about his hacks.
"Nah, I got 10 of them so I can use them," Arthur said, expounding on why he has been whistled so often. "(I'm) just playing real aggressive, going after the ball a lot, just trying to transition from college to the NBA."
Arthur scored 18 points off 9-of-12 shooting Friday and 10 points off 3-of-11 shooting Saturday. He had just three points off 1-of-7 shooting in 22 minutes versus the Lakers. Memphis was 2-1 in those games.
"I'm just going with the flow, just trying to pick up everything I can, learn as much while I'm here, listening to my teammates and following their lead," said Arthur, the 27th pick in the first round of the 2008 NBA Draft. He wound up with Memphis after a series of draft-night trades.
"I'm not doing anything special, just going out there playing my game. Right now, I'm going to just keep running the floor, get as many rebounds as I can and easy buckets in transition. Once I get in with the whole team and learn the system (in fall camp), I'll find out what my role is."
Arthur had one rebound Sunday after grabbing seven total in his first two summer games.
"I'm playing with a chip on my shoulder every night. I want to go out there and show people I can play," Arthur told the Las Vegas Sun, indicating he's still disappointed he was not a lottery pick.

3 points and 1 rebound isn't much of a chip. I hope he can start playing better.

It is too bad that Arthur didn't go to a team that already had frontcourt depth so he could gradually learn how to play at the NBA level. He has always been a supbar defender and foul prone. I don't see that changing anytime in the near future. He should get a lot of minutes with the Grizzlies if he can stay out of foul trouble. However I have a feeling he will be sitting more than playing because of fouls.

Shady was not a very good rebounder in college, despite his size and athleticism. He is going to have to work his butt off to make his mark. I wish him luck. Also, in the Hornets' first summer game, Julian shot 4 of 17 and had 11 turnovers. Not so good either.Come on guys!

Did any of you see the news about CBS and Billy Packer parting company? The ESPN story indicates there was a rif between the two due to Packer's comments during the Kansas/North Carolina semi-final game, Packer declared the game over in the first half.Personally, I always felt Packer was late to get on the Jayhawk bus, in '88 and '08.

The reason he is still "disappointed" is because HE chose not to hire an agent early on. What he did was keep it in family and an AAU coach who knew nothing about the real sports world. THAT Darrell, is the reason you punked out. Accept responsiblity for the blame.

Arthur is a good player. He will develop well and he'll be ok. He never was a superstar at Kansas and I don't expect that from him in the NBA, but he got drafted in the first round and he's signed a contract to play basketball for money. Good for him. I certainly would have loved to see him back in a Kansas uniform in November but he has moved on and we should support him.

Arthur has been a fouling machine since Day 1. I'm still not convinced he knows how to set a proper screen, but he's going to make millions playing the game so I guess that's not what matters. I think Darrell will have a tough couple of seasons before finding his feet and becoming a 20 and 10 guy for many years. I wish him nothing but the best, and I look forward to the day when I see him set a fundamental screen (sorry to keep harping on that but it has always bothered me with him).In other news, thank you CBS for getting rid of that controversy-courting curmudgeon, Billy Packer. I cannot express how happy I am that I won't have to listen to his obnoxious comments throughout March Madness (from the selection show to the Final 4). Goodbye and good riddance!

Arther did not play like a animal partly because the team had so many stars, HE did not have to! But he should have gotten a clue at sometime! I am darn happy we had him. Darn good player, with a heck of alot of talent! I sure wish him well and that he does himself, family and the Jayhawk Nation Proud!

He had a big game tonight with 23 pts. "Just" five fouls. Quite an improvement. He'll be a good pro I'm sure. Will take him a while like Julian, but he's playing much better in summer league than Ju did last year.

Make no mistake about it, I am ALL for Darrell and want him to succeed at the highest possible level. He definitely has the talent and needs to keep plugging away. Maybe if he has a chip on his shoulder that will man him up a bit and go on the war path.

Since when did anyone care about summer league games? It's glorified practice & w/o 1/2 the league participating for crying out loud. Derrick Rose "lost" to Michael Beasley in their first game in Orlando, and it makes front page news here in Chicago & elsewhere? WTF? God bless the internets... :)

Good point swonder, but the summer league is a big deal in Vegas. Check out the Las Vegas Sun's Website and Review-Journal. They are going nuts with coverage. Mario's games with Beasley were covered heavily.Summer league ball is growing in popularity.
