Known as one of the top recruiters in the country during his 16 seasons as a college head basketball coach, Bill Self has additional ammunition to use in pursuing prep players in the Class of 2009.
Kansas University's sixth-year coach, who today hits the road for the start of the July evaluation period, can sell ...
¢ KU's 2008 NCAA title victory over Memphis and No. 1 NBA Draft pick Derrick Rose.
¢ The 2008 NBA title in which former KU player Paul Pierce's Boston Celtics disposed of Kobe Bryant's Lakers in six games. It marked the third straight year former Jayhawks claimed the NBA's top prize.
¢ A whopping five players selected in the 2008 NBA Draft, including three non-seniors - mighty important to blue-chippers who want to exit college for the pros as soon as possible.
"We've got to strike while the iron is hot and have a great fall (recruiting)," said Self, who has two available scholarships for the Class of 2009; more if Sherron Collins, Cole Aldrich or any of the squad's newcomers decide to turn pro.
"We've always been fairly popular. We've got some guys (prospects) calling us now. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out," Self added.
His most important recruiting tool, of course, will be KU's most recent national championship.
"We will be able to sell, 'Hey if you are able to come here, look what can and will happen if everybody is on the same page,''' Self said. "The university has made great steps as far as helping recruiting from an entire university standpoint. Things will be done with housing (at Jayhawker Towers where the players reside), the new (practice) facility and improvements to the fieldhouse. We're excited about everything going on at our university."
The first part of the summer recruiting period runs from today until July 15. After a break, it resumes from July 22-31. It's a period in which coaches are to be seen, but not heard at various AAU events since the NCAA prohibits coaches from having any contacts with players at the tournaments.
Usual stops are events in Las Vegas, North Augusta, S.C., Indianapolis, Orlando, Fla., Louisville and Tulsa, to name a few.
Self can't comment on specific recruits in accordance with NCAA rules. Here's a list of some Class of '09 players believed to be considering KU, listed in no particular order. Obviously this list could be incomplete, with some prospects yet to be revealed publicly.

i think that bill showed people that you could win a national championship, get drafted early into the association, and still learn defense and team play. there's gonna be a lot of people calling head coach bill self.

I met Carl Henry when Late night was first starting. I went to the field house with my kids 9 and 5. They got to talk with Carl and I took their picture with him. He was the nicest person. We will never forget him.

Would it be all that difficult for the Journal-World to list the individual player's actual position? i know some of these kids (not personally, but I know who they are) and know their positions, but a lot of these young men are news to me. If you have access to their height, weight and high school, can't you list where they will play on the floor? I hate to assume that the 6-2 kid is a point guard and the 6-5 kid is a #2 guard, even though some of those assumptions are likely accurate.

I'd be pleased if we landed two out of all those players listed. We only have that small number of scholarships, so I also wouldn't be surprised if there is a transfer or two in the next year. I'll be largely disappointed, to say the least, if we don't get Henry.

You said it, Chicago. Even by KU standards, having the top four and seven of the top 11 prospects (according to Rivals) considering KU is pretty amazing.

We're still trailing NC as far as blue chippers (5 stars) recruits. I agree that NC seems to be loaded with 5 stars high school players pretty much every year. But too much talent could mean no one wants to play defense.

Just because a kid gave a verbal doesn't mean we have to give him a scholarship. If KU doesn't offer, they aren't obligated.

Judging talent at the HS level is really hard and Coach Self and staff do a magnificent job. The Rivals and Scout and SI rankings may mean little because KU plays defense and few of those rankings even consider defensive ability. That means assessing lateral quickness and team character as well as shooting and dribbling and passing. There will be some quality recruits coming in each year and Coach Self will send off NBA lottery players year after year. Collins is nearly sure thing and Aldrich is as well when they decide to cash in. I think Cole has the possibility of proving himself the best big man in the country this year. As for next year Xavier Henry is one of us and I truly hope Coach Self and Xavier both agree. Coach has always recruited Oklahoma well and done well by those he has developed. Nobody even knew Darnell Jackson when he was offered but he is in Cleveland now following the path of Carlos Boozer with many of the same talents. Sasha would have been drafted higher but chose to sign in Russia before the draft. Mario will prove to be the best point guard in the draft because his defense will get him on the floor quickly alongside Wade and that is a dynamite combination.

"Collins is nearly sure thing"I have to disagree. He is an under 6 foot point guard that is a shoot first type of player. He can play himself into the lotto but it will take a lot of work. And Xavier might be going to Memphis, because he has said many times he just wants to play in the NBA. Memphis would get him there faster.

We are most likely to have three rides available, when the time comes.Collins, if he gets healthy for all of next season, is just too good to not to go pro after next year. After seeing how high DJ Augustin went, it is apparent that strong talented short PGs have a major place in the NBA. Sherron Collins, if he gets healthy, is better than Baron Davis and better than DJ Augustin. The less pleasant possibility is that legal problems will strip this remarkable basketball player from KU and open a third scholarship. And, then, too, there is always the possiblity that the twins will not qualify, will head for Europe, and we'll have five scholies to give.Coaches, players, and fans have to be particularly flexible in their expectations these days.

Sherron is not leaving after this season. He isn't 6 foot, he hasn't had a good assist to turnover ratio and needs to stay healthy. Cole Aldrich is a bigger threat to leave then Collins.

Is there any new word on CJ Henry coming with Xavier? I seem to recall talk a while ago about him walking on to play with his brother since he had the pro baseball contract. While Sherron has more O than some of our "pure" PG's of the recent past (Miles, Vaughn), it seems way out of line to call him a "shoot first" PG. His D may still be behind that of RR and Mario, but it has improved greatly. In my book, the one thing he needs to improve to jump is some decision making at crunch time. Sometimes the team is better off if he doesn't attack. That was the skill that Augustine and Collison embody so well.It will obviously be SC's team to lead this year, but I look for Cole to have a huge year. His game developed so much thru last season, and he will need to be on the court most of each game this year, so he could have monster stats.I certainly hope Coach Self has a replacement for both.

Not that it makes all the difference in the world, but nbadraft.net has their 2010 Mock Draft out and they have Aldrich going 13th and Collins going 40th, but Favors, Henry, Wall, Sidney, and Orton (maybe others) listed in the top 20. Just their opinion.

trich424,Collins has been injured both his years at KU. His stats and his defense will skyrocket, if he is healthy for a full season. His trey shooting has even been pretty good on bad wheels. His defense improved a lot on bad wheels. If he gets to play full time, so that he's not being sent into Self to pick up the pace and force it inside all the time, his assist/TO ratio will be as good as anyones. He's gone after next season...unless he's hurt again.Regarding the 2010 Mock Draft: No one has seen Collins play healthy for any length of time.Regarding Xavier: you have to wonder what the pot is being sweetened with in Memphis? What brings first Derrick Rose and then Xavier Henry to Beale Street? Bar-b-que sauce?

"He's gone after next season...unless he's hurt again"Okay, that doesn't make any sense. All that you described was a best case scenario. It doesn't change the fact that he is 5'11" and a shoot first type of point guard. Something scouts are too high on. He could definitely play himself in, but I doubt if it is after next year.

Okay, that doesn't make any sense. All that you describe minimizes how much better Collins plays when healthy and makes a specious argument about short, shoot-first PGs not being desirable in the pros.Iverson, Nash, Davis, Augustin were all short, shoot-first PGs in college, who the pros invested heavily in. For that matter, Mayo and Gordon were tall shoot-first PGs in college this year. Being a shoot-first PG in college is actually a positive to pro scouts, GMs and coaches. It means the player can create and make shots inside and outside. Frankly, every starting PG in the pros HAS to be able to take it to the rim in traffic and shoot the trey, along with being excellent distributors, or they don't get to be starters. They get to be backups. The only exceptions are a few, extremely strong, lock-down defenders, like JKidd, who's defense and moves to the rim off-set his lack of outside shooting. JVaughn has never cut it as a starter, because try as he has, he can't hit the trey, and he is not a lock own defender. Collins, on good wheels, will become a good defender, he can shoot the rock inside and outside. He'll need to play on a team with a lock-down defender at SG, but then that is the case with all the short PGs who play in the NBA.In short stretches when Collins has been healthy, he is one of the quickest PGs I've ever seen, certainly the quickest wide body PG I've ever seen. And even with bad wheels, he has tended to blow by all the top PGs he's played against.Again, if he's healthy all season (a big if), he's gone after the coming season.

The one thing that I think puts us over the top on the rest of the teams is, if you chose to come to kansas, you can get the great coaching that it takes to get you to the next level, and still leave early. i think this last year showed what our coaching staff can do in a short time. If a player comes, gets great coaching, becomes a better ball player, the better chance he'll have at makin more Benjamins. IMO, and I think we proved it, we had several members on our squad that could even shut down the #1 draft pick. I'm not sure about all these young recruits but that there speaks volumes to me. Mario may not be making multi millions right now but, along with the other 2 drafted in the second round, he'll make more dollars in his career then alot of the peeps takin in the first round will.

I'd love to hear about how Sherron is better than Barron Davis. That seems pretty ridiculous, at least at this point. Perhaps he has the potential to get there a long time down the road, but I don't think he's even close to it now. One of the biggest reasons, aside from the obvious injury factor, is his decision making. How frustrated was everyone when he tried to force the ball to the basket against a double team with 16 seconds left in the championship game? It drove me nuts because I thought he had blown our last chance to win. And that's not the first time he's done that kind of thing. On the other hand, he's certainly shown flashes of brilliance in his ability to get to the basket (or in the steal and three-pointer that cut the Memphis lead to four), so if he can do it more consistently and not make as many mistakes, that's a different story. But I love how people just gloss over his injuries, saying things like, "As long he doesn't get hurt, ..." But that's a BIG if. He hasn't come close to showing that he can be healthy for a long period of time. As strong as his body is, his size can also be a hindrance for staying healthy. At this point, I'd tend to go along with the opinion of Cole going 13th and Sherron 40th. There's obviously a long way to go, so we'll see what happens. Of course I hope I'm wrong, because if Sherron and Cole end up both being lottery picks, that would mean another great year for KU.

SO interesting to see if Self can "do it again" with a new group of kids. It may be Sherron's team to run, but make NO mistake: he will need all the talent around him to play as a team like the Champ (07-08) team did. Mario Little and Releford are absolute ballers. Cole will need to be a monster and he has shown flashes already (ask psychoT...). We need the Twins, frankly to develop our depth and rotations. Staying healthy is but one aspect for Sherron, as is the legal distraction. There is also the reason RussRob remained a starter over Sherron: size and decision-making. Russell rarely tried to do-it-all by himself, unlike Sherron, who has shown such lapses in the KU system. What is interesting to me is if Self's System will show itself to be a plug-and-play type, which I hope it is, as I feel it is a complete game, and thus deserves to be successful. About getting all the top-recruits to "buy-in" to the team-first philosophy and play both ends of the floor--I totally agree. I would use the example of none other than RussRob, a 22ppg scorer in high school, who Self first stole from GaTech, then we saw Russ's pain in giving up that type of scoring glory for the role that he blossomed into--great for KU ultimately, but, alas, it is hurting him right now in his NBA quest, as they havent seen that scoring out of him while at KU, and he is trying desparately to bring back that scoring aggression he showed us his freshman year, subbing for Keith Langford. What a saga. And Self will ask the same of some of the incoming recruits, to sacrifice something similar for the team.
