Indianapolis Former Kansas University basketball guard Brandon Rush hopes to remind Indiana Pacers fans of one of the best players in team history, Reggie Miller.
"Just coming in and helping the team win," Rush told the Indianapolis Star on Wednesday after taking a physical exam with his new team. "With him being a sharpshooter, I want to be that kind of player."
At 6-6 and 210 pounds, Rush compared himself to another NBA great.
"I kind of pattern myself after Paul Pierce," Rush said, referring to the former Jayhawk who led the Boston Celtics to the NBA title. "I've been watching him his whole career, and he's definitely a guy I see myself trying to play like."
Rush was drafted by Portland at No. 13 and traded to the Pacers for No. 11 pick Jerryd Bayless. The Pacers can't comment on Rush until trades become official July 9.
"My agent told me they were going to pick me but then trade me to Indiana," Rush told the Indy Star. "I knew, but I just couldn't say anything."
Rush said his three years in college, "made me a better teammate. Coming into college, I was known as a go-to guy who could dominate the ball the whole time. Learning to be a better teammate helped me to be a better player."
Rush's brother, Kareem. played for the Pacers last year but is not expected to re-sign with the team.
"I definitely see us as a team on the rise. They were one game behind eighth place," Rush said of where the Pacers finished in the Eastern Conference playoff race. "We've got a lot of young talent, and I think they're going to make some more trades. I think we're definitely a team people are going to have to deal with."
Beasley back at practice
Miami - Michael Beasley returned to practice with the Miami Heat on Thursday, one day after the No. 2 overall pick in last week's NBA draft was knocked out of his first official summer-league workout with a chest bruise.
Beasley was inadvertently elbowed by a teammate during a defensive drill about 45 minutes after Miami opened its summer-league camp Wednesday morning. He was taken to a doctor for evaluation and treatment, and did not participate with his summer Heat teammates in practices Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Beasley returned for a non-contact session Thursday afternoon, the team said.
He is expected to take part in summer league, which opens Monday in Orlando.
Paul agrees to new deal
New Orleans - Chris Paul and the Hornets reached a contract agreement Thursday that could keep the All-Star point guard with the team for at least the next four seasons. Lance Young, Paul's agent, said Paul agreed to a three-year extension with a player's option for a fourth year. The total value of the deal is $68 million.

It's certainly a stretch, but the only correlation I can see is that he is a teammate of JuJu...

It really is a stretch that Brandon compares himself to Paul Pierce, two very different players with different styles.

How is Chris Paul related to KU? Nice money, but who cares? It's a national notebook, Yates. Maybe the Internet person could have cut it off for the Internet version of the story if he/she knew it would have offended you. In the paper, it all runs as a national notebook on page 2.Don't worry; be happy. You just won a national title and it's July 4th. Go White Sox!!

If you guys want I can pass the word to cut the stories for the Internet version when KU is no longer mentioned in the story. Let me know if that is your desire.

Gary, I too think it's great that you interact with posted opinions. It helps you get feedback and gives us more insight to you're thinking. As for Chris Paul... I've never even heard of him before, but, I for one would rather have too much information than not enough, so keep on.By the way, I have several Chisox on my fantasy teams, but, laugh if you may, the Royals are going to catch them.Rock Chalk Champion-hawk !!!!

The Royals are so puzzling. They were just 7 or 8 games back I believe in the loss column after the White Sox lost all 3 to the Cubs, now it's back into double digits. They are a confusing team, that is for sure.

With all due respect, the Royals are not at all puzzling. The Royals are just one of 2/3s to 3/4s of the major league baseball teams that make no effort to win. Major league owners are largely of two types: a) individuals owning family interests in monopolies/oligopolies that wish to put a certain percentage of wealth in no risk asset investments with big depreciation plays and huge upside monopoly asset pricing (you can't put everything in bonds and clip coupons); or b) real estate speculators who have laundered a ton of illicit monies through their real estate flips and own a major league franchise again to take a ride on monopoly asset pricing and to get an asset that is independent of real estate cycles. Neither of these types likes to try to win consistently. They're not in it for the glory of the game. They are in it for cold, hard asset appreciation, plus annual depreciation write-offs. If I recall correctly, baseball players remain the only professional athletes with the same tax standing as race horses. They are depreciable. Current major league owners sometimes they like a year or two of the celebrity of ownership, but they quickly tire of it. This is why major league baseball is moribund as a sport, even though it is fabulously successful as an investment vehicle with tv revenues. It used to be that the bottom 25% of the teams didn't try to win. Now never more than 4-6 teams are playing to win in any given season. Its disgraceful. The Royals have not been willing to pay the price even to try to win, since a few years after Kaufman checked out. As a result, they haven't.The Royals the last 15 years have been bigger jokes than the Kansas City Athletics were in my early childhood. The Athletics went from being the Yankees "major league farm club" to being a joke once Finley bought them. But at least COF was holding down overhead and kicking out all the dead wood, while trying to find a way to win. COF operated them as a cheap carney in KC while he stock piled young players and then moved them to a bigger market when he got critical mass.Current Royals ownership is apparently just feeding their accountants depreciation and playing for asset appreciation. When you root for the Royals, you are rooting for a team, but not a baseball team. Baseball is a game you play to win. The Royals do not try to win. They try to buy just enough players, and spend just enough on PR to keep the stands and tv ratings just high enough to pass through the depreciation right offs and without spending any cash out of pocket; then down stream, sell for a big profit. This is finance and entertainment and marketing, but it is NOT baseball. All of the above is opining of course.
