USA Basketball announced Thursday that Kansas University freshman Travis Releford was a finalist for the 2008 USA Men's U18 National Team.

Releford, a guard from Bishop Miege in Roland Park, was one of 14 players that survived three trials at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. this week.

Now that he's made the first cut, Releford's focus shifts to making the 12-man roster, which will be finalized by July 8.

The team cut four players on Thursday and the cuts were made by the USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee, chaired by Syracuse University head coach Jim Boeheim.

The 14 finalists will continue training at the Verizon Center twice a day, at 9 a.m. 5 p.m., through July 8.

"I'm thrilled with the effort, with the competitiveness and with the attitude of every one of the guys who were a part of these trials. We're down to 14 players right now and we still have two players to cut, but it's incredibly competitive and the talent level is superb; and most importantly and most satisfying is the fact that they are so willing to learn and so willing to get better. We have what we think is superb chemistry on the coaching staff and we are going to work to make sure it filters down to the team," said USA and Davidson College head coach Bob McKillop.

After the squad is chosen, it will compete at the 2008 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, which will take place July 14-18 in Argentina. The top four finishers automatically qualify for the U19 2009 FIBA World Championship, scheduled for July 2-12 of next year in New Zealand.

I like Travis' odds! Can you imagine how Boeheim has been drooling over these guys, wishing he could bring many of them to 'Cuse to play for him??

That's great. Seems like a fantastic guy and a great coach. He deserves everything he gets after last year's run. Sure will be fun to see what Davidson's made of this year...

I hope Boeheim cuts Releford. Things turned out pretty well after Chalmers and Collins were cut from another USA squad. We'll just hang another banner.(Really, though. I hope Releford makes the team.)

way to go travis. that's impressive and to get that kind of experience will only add to what he's made of when we're down in norman or austin, gunnin' for that league title.

He's a USA Basketball "veteran", so he has an advantage on the others in terms of knowing the expectations. Also, are they playing under FIBA rules, with the trapezoidal paint and slightly different officiating standards? If so, his experience would definitely help. Kinda like how Carmelo Anthony claims to love the international game with the Olympians. Some players just take to it better than others.

I see releford as the Langford mold same body type, same drive first before looking for the jumper-i also see him as a 4 year player....i just think his shooting touch is just average, but if he plays D and gets to the foul line, nice guy to have in a 3-4 man rotation...i have saw him play more than once and i think of him a nice 6th man at the D1 level..

Fantastic experience for Travis. I think he was way under-utilized last season. If I could find anything to complain about our championship season, it would be that Travis wasn't worked into the rotation enough. He has the skills but just needs the experience on the court.Rock Chalk Champion-Hawk !!!!!

mcrozbThis will be Travis's first year as a Jayhawk. He wasn't on the team last year as he was still in HS. I believe you're are thinking of Tyrel Reed.

mcrozb, are you serious? I love confidently written posts that make no sense at all and expose someone as a mediocre fan...

Nice post (a bit old?) from USATodayTravis Releford (Kansas) - Aggressively looking to penetrate and get his shot, Releford scored 10 points in the scrimmage. He was one of the top guards during the session, and he did a nice job balancing his aggressiveness within the structure of team play. Expect Releford to be a productive and stabilizing force for Kansas next year with his mature game.
