New turnpike signs boast of KU’s 2008 accomplishments

Orange Bowl, basketball championship, academic research all mentioned

New signs along I-70 boast KU's recent academic and athletic achievements.

The new sign, which lays claim to Kansas' status as an international research university, 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions and 2008 Orange Bowl Champions, was installed on Wednesday at mile marker 207.

Between bouts of rain and trips to the trucks to avoid lightning, Kansas Turnpike Authority workers Wednesday raised a new exit sign to three I-beams along Interstate 70 east of Lawrence.

The sign, one of two raised, touts KU's recent academic and athletic achievements. While the old sign trumpeted the school's four NCAA men's basketball titles, no mention was given to the school's academics.

Increasing research, coupled with the 2008 men's basketball title and a 2008 Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech, led the school to put up some new signs, said KU spokesman Jack Martin.

Martin took over the project to purchase and erect new turnpike signs in September, shortly after he was hired by the university.

The exit sign west of Lawrence had come down in a wind storm, and the sign east of town was beginning to fade.

As talks with the KTA continued and the Jayhawks began to show promise in the basketball season, officials decided to hold off on the signs until they saw how the basketball season played out.

Each sign brought a $8,000 price tag, Martin said, paid for by KU.

"And we're glad we did," Martin said.

The new signs have a Jayhawk emblazoned on the top followed by the exit number and three lines touting the university's recent successes:

"An International Research University."

"2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions."

"2008 Orange Bowl Champions."

Gary Campbell, road maintenance supervisor for the KTA, said it took about two or three days to assemble the entire sign. The smaller pieces were then hauled out to the interstate, where it took about three hours to piece together and place on the I-beams.

Martin said the signs would be updated next year, replacing "2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions" to boast of the five national titles the Jayhawks have under their belt.

Color codes for highway signs

What determines a highway sign's color?

The Kansas Department of Transportation has a set list of criteria determining what sign gets what color.

Green signs tend to alert travelers to cities and major arts and science institutions within those cities. Brown signs are designated tourist or historical cites.

Lisa Callahan, public relations director for the Kansas Turnpike Authority, said certain entities - such as public universities - were allowed to purchase green signs specifically pointing out successes they have had, which might encourage people to visit.

Those hoping to receive brown signs pointing out either their historical building, society or tourism destination must apply to the state. If the Kansas State Historical Society or the Travel and Tourism Division of the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing approve the request, the Bureau of Traffic Engineering will erect the sign free of charge.

Callahan said certain entities were prohibited from purchasing signage, including adult-themed businesses, industrial parks and various privately owned businesses.

Also, how can you publish this without a picture, cmon now!

They should have left space for a few more lines at the bottom, as we're only getting started.

You guys are seriously abusing the "BREAKING NEWS" headline this summer. Isn't that usually reserved for big important stories?Every time I see it I think something huge has happened, like a recruit committing or something and then no, just a billboard or an ESPY nomination. Quit getting me all excited for nothing!

Gordon Penny 9 years, 1 month ago

Yes, the Master Debaters should have their own sign

sdoyel 9 years, 1 month ago

They had better put a barbed wire fence around it.... The purps will have that thing covered in paint in no time.

These signs are very cool, however no mention of our 2008 Debate National Championship on them? Sigh.

Vic Janeway 9 years, 1 month ago

Wheres the National Debate Champs sign....

Sweet. Now I'll be able to slow the flow on I-70 to take a pic the next time I go visit the folks!!!!

Jaminrawk 9 years, 1 month ago

That should be yet another nice thing for recruits to see when they get into town.

Ryan2845-Sorry about the lack of picture, it should be fixed now. There was a technological glitch where the photo showed up on our LJWorld.com site but not KUSports.com. ThanksJonathan KealingOnline editor

Awesome! Now when will the Soil Judging championship sign be put up further down the interstate.

JJHAWK 9 years, 1 month ago

When KU won it all in 88, I believe K-State won the National Debate Championship. So since we won both titles this year, can we at least debate the signage issue? ;>)

chaddyd 9 years, 1 month ago

I now live in Dallas, can someone around the Lawrence area tell me that the sign with "Dr. James Naismith Inventor of Basketball" is still up right? Because thats a sweet sign

TtownHawk 9 years, 1 month ago

Finally! i've made the drive to KC the past two weeks and was wondering when those signs were going to be replaced.

I am confident they would tell us it's all about presentation and packaging, actorman. They would probably say the "2008" gives it more relevance for now.I am surprised someone didn't contend that we only have three national titles in men's basketball and not five. No doubt they will likely complain when the signs are updated next year.

actorman 9 years, 1 month ago

Good point, txrockchalk. You're probably right; good to emphasis the glorious 2008 year first and then switch over.

Jim Pendleton 9 years, 1 month ago

Shouldn't there be a sign for the west side of town also? Need to make sure all the purps (like that term - good one sdoyel) see that one also when they come in for games this year. If they do one out there, they should add the debate team as well. They should also leave room on these sign(s) for being a Titletown finalist.

PeteJayhawk 9 years, 1 month ago

Because it's a freaking HIGHLIGHT video, people. The complete games are available all over the internet. If you can't figure out how to get them, that's not CBS' problem.

"Martin said the signs would be updated next year, replacing "2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions" to boast of the five national titles the Jayhawks have under their belt."Did anyone else notice this? Why do they need to set it up this way now and replace it next year? Why couldn't they just have "boasted" of the five national titles in this year's sign? Is it that much more complicated to do?

Actually KU finished first in the NDT rankings, but it did not with the NDT Championship that was actually accomplished by Wake. They had a team in Quarters. However, they ended the season #1 in the Varsity rankings. Here is how those points are counted:A school's best eight tournaments count for the NDT rankings. The two teams who score the most points at an individual tournament count. There are rankings for overall, varsity, community college, and regions. So it is not as easy to say that they won the NDT or CEDA tourneys. The KSU Debate Titles are CEDA titles, which well is not quite the same. In fact Fort Hays won a CEDA title in 2002. I am not trying to belittle the accomplishments because it is still amazing. However, the #1 Ranking in Varsity is just slightly different and difficult to reflect in a sign.

penguin 9 years, 1 month ago

Also KSU won their CEDA titles in 1991 and 1993.What no suggestion that we put up a sign that saysHome of the 2008 Master DebatersIt seems to be the most common debate joke out there:amongst those who have never been in debate. Also I am not trying to start any fight. All the KU debaters are pretty great people:those that I have met/judged over the years. I guess another way to look at those KSU signs is like if we would have put a sign on the highway that said:Home of the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl ChampsAgain, why everyone should chuckle at those signs as they approach Ainthappen.

penguin 9 years, 1 month ago

However, KU has won the NDT many more times than KSU has won the CEDA tournament. They won the NDT National Title in 1983, 1976, 1970, 1954However, it is just not on a sign like the CEDA titles that KSU won.

BUYERS BEWARE:I ordered the championship DVD from the CBS store because it's advertised at the end of these web articles. Unfortunately, the DVD has been horribly edited, leaving out significant minutes of the semifinal game with UNC, at least 8 minutes in the first half alone, when KU was dominating UNC. THE CBS STORE DOES NOT SAY THIS IN THEIR AD COPY WHEN ORDERING!!!!

trich424 9 years, 1 month ago

Shut up about debate. The joke has run its course, we are not going to spend $8,000 on a sign to recognize a debate team.

penguin 9 years, 1 month ago

What about the 2004 Bowling National Championship?

Rick Arnoldy 9 years, 1 month ago

BUYERS BEWAREYeah, I smell a class action suit coming. How can you edit out one of the most historic runs in a final four game?

You guys are seriously abusing the "BREAKING NEWS" headline this summer. Isn't that usually reserved for big important stories?-- Hey, breaking news is in the eyes of the beholder. It's one way to let you know it's a new story, not one you may have seen earlier. But if you don't like it, you don't like it. Not trying to change your mind.

Mike Crosbie 9 years, 1 month ago

I wish people would quit referring to our 3 NCAA championships and include all 5 national championships, so what if 2 of them happened before the creation of the NCAA.Rock Chalk Champion-Hawk !!!!!

davidsmom 9 years, 1 month ago

While I enjoy the National Championship and Rock Chalk Championship 2-DVD set, I would rather have had the entire KU-UNC semi-final on DVD than just highlights. Also, the second DVD, "The Jayhawks' run to..." did not include the shot of Bill Self at the very end of the Davidson game. I know I can find it on the internet, but I would rather have it on that DVD. The Orange Bowl DVD left out some of the FOX post-game stuff I wanted, also. Oh, well.
