Woodling: Happy new year!

Posted Tuesday, July 1, 2008

You know what today is, don’t you? OK, it’s the first day of the rest of your life. But it’s also a new year for Kansas Athletics Inc.

KAI, the corporate behemoth that operates on the Kansas University campus, functions on a fiscal year basis that begins on July 1.

The arrival of New Fiscal Year’s Day means that just about all the KAI employees will be receiving their hefty raises based on the bountiful booty created by the football team’s appearance in the Orange Bowl and the men’s basketball team’s … well, you know what it did.

July 1 has an additional connotation. It means last year is last year. In other words, it’s officially time to forget about 2007-2008 and slip into the inevitable next-year mode.

Fortunately, for football coach Mark Mangino and for men’s basketball coach Bill Self, expectations will be diminished — football because of an upgraded schedule and men’s basketball because of a major roster overhaul.

Dropoffs are likely. Fans have to realize that. Not that anyone expects Mangino or Self to hide behind excuses. Decline may be inevitable, but the fans won’t tolerate a freefall.

KU football, for example, has about as much chance of matching last year’s magical 12-1 season as Lawrence does of becoming a major seaport. Those two blissful years with Texas and Oklahoma missing from the Jayhawks’ schedule are history.

Eight wins would be a more reasonable expectation this fall, and, to tell the truth, seven victories might be more logical.

Basically, though, the Jayhawks have to find a way to snap the school’s ongoing post-bowl jinx. Kansas has never made back-to-back appearances in the postseason. That’s right. Never.

How pervasive has that whammy been? Let’s use 2006 as an example. Only one school in the country with a bowl-qualifying record failed to receive a bid that year, and I don’t have to tell you which school it was.

Sure, the Jayhawks’ 6-6 record wasn’t all that great, but it was good enough, or should have been good enough. On the flip side, you could speculate the ’06 snub may have given the Jayhawks added incentive during their amazing 2007 Orange Bowl season.

Don’t discount a team’s mental approach. All you have to do is hearken back to 1969, the last time a KU football team was coming off an Orange Bowl appearance. Heavy graduation losses hurt, but that ’69 team might have been the most complacent in school history while stumbling to a 1-9 record — one of the most dramatic win-loss reversals in NCAA annals.

The 1982 season — the year after the Jayhawks played in the ’81 defunct Hall of Fame Bowl in that storied southern spa of Birmingham, Ala. — was almost as bad. The ’82 team went 2-7-1.

Overall, KU’s record in post-bowl years is 45-61-3, with three winning seasons, six losing seasons and that one .500 year of ’06. Those three winning seasons — 1976 (6-5), 1962 (6-3-1) and 1948 (7-3) — certainly would have produced post-season appearances if the bowl count were as high in those days as it is now.

But they didn’t, leaving us to wonder if 2008 will be the year the Kansas post-bowl curse finally ends.

Bowls have only been common place the last 15 years or so, and KU was not real great for most of that period of time. It's a lot easier to make a bowl nowadays although the league is still tough so it's not a sure thing. KU has 7 games in Lawrence this year so let's sell the place out, rock the house, and go 7-0 at home again this year. Buy your season tickets because "We're just getting started!"

Well, Ive got my first foolish prediction regarding this team. Exactly this time last year Woodling came out with an article mocking our football facilities that were being built saying it was all in vain and if that didnt work the next move would probably be to take out the track. He was telling KU fans to just accept mediocrity. Lucky for him, I cant go back to stories more than a few weeks old now on KUsports. Otherwise Id put the link on here so you could see it for yourself. If Woodling was our AD, we would be forever stuck in the dark ages.

fabio - What can we expect from an MU grad? Here's to hoping the football team will use his article and prediction for motivation/bulletin board material.

To be honest, a year ago I would have agreed that mediocrity was the standard for KU football and probably would always be. But now that we finally got recognized by the BCS system (after the best season in KU football history), that standard has changed -- whether this position is permanent or temporary -- only time will tell.

My prediction (and that is all it is) is that we will be 10-2 in the 2008 regular season, with an upset win against either Texas or Oklahoma.

Wow. Nice find! It just amazes me the the town of Lawrence puts up with this guy. He keeps poking too, like he wants to see just how far he can go.

Reading the article made me check to see whether it was actually just some mizzoo drivel from the KCStar. An MU grad? That explains the dumping. 12-1 may not be likely, but to imply that 1-9, 2-7-1, ... are is ignorant homerism. You deserve an office in Paige.

Another year of excruciating losses (2006) is indeed a possibility, but competing with and beating the best teams in the nation (50% of the time, MU, VTech) should be a minimum. If we only remain at 50% then 9-4 (OU, UT, TTU, MU, SFU, NU, CU, Bowl Game - Yes, I do think NU will be a top team again this year) is very reasonable against such a tough schedule.

That being said, I think MU was just as beatable as VTech, and so yes I do believe that it is possible to even improve on 12-1. Maybe not likely, but definitely possible.

On another note, no team has gone 2-7-1 in at least 35 years. How long has it been since teams played only 10 games? The correct record for '82 was 2-7-2. How dare he shortchange KU a tie, given that KU is (and always will be) the all-time leader in ties--a proud legacy.

And the million-dollar question is, which team is second? Does anyone else know? (I'm not too proud to say that I am aware of it.)

On paper....the '08-'09 Jayhawks....potentially the best team ever. 10-2 or better, boys, bank on it, with a big win over MU at the end of the season. We will also beat TU.

It's hard to see a weakness on this team unless it might be in the kicking game, which at this point is untested. Since the kicking game is so important and untested, I do have a little angst about my prediction. However, Mangino teams find a way to make the most out of the talent at hand.

10-2 or better.

Woodling is king of the PESSIMISTS.

I don't know what to think of this season.
Key is that nonconference road game. Gotta win it and take care of the 3 at home to have a special type season.
Playing the tougher South schedule and at Nebraska before the sea of red. Wow.

Forgive me if there are not four nonconference games; I couldn't find a schedule.

The D will be awesome this yr in my opinion, and the question mark will be the offense--namely, the o line.

The O is always a little slower to start than the D, so the first two softballs will be key for the offense to get things buttoned up before the trip to Tampa. I'm with Gary, that SF game will prove very important--we've GOT to start off 4-0 before conf. play.

I see Iowa St., Colorado, and KsU as the best chances for W's, and if we can get those 7 wins and steal one or two from the Okies, a very bent on revenge Nebraska, a hot TTU team, or exact our own revenge on Tay-has, we will be in excellent shape.

I'm calling 8-4 or 9-3 this year and back-to-back bowl games for the first time ever. I am so excited for Aug. 30 I can hardly contain myself!

South Florida is huge, because if we win that and go on to win the conference we ought to be in the national title game givin our schedule. However, if we lose in Tampa, we can still go after a conference title, but a national title goes out the window.
I know we play Nebraska in Lincoln this year, but if we cant win in Lincoln this year, than we will probably never win there. We are just way too good and Nebraska was just way to bad this last year for any coach to come in and make them good enough, to were they should be able to beat us.
We won there in 06, and the refs took it away from us. The game is November 8th, so the weather will be cold up there. That has me a little worried about Reesing, who struggled with the cold a little in the Mizzou game.

We'll beat the Huskers and I will be there to see every glorious moment of it.
