Young denies accepting Miami job
Kansas University defensive coordinator Bill Young denied a published report stating he accepted a job at Miami on Wednesday. "I haven't accepted a job anywhere," Young said when reached Wednesday evening.
Hold it, Hurricanes.
Kansas University defensive coordinator Bill Young, who has been on coach Mark Mangino's football staff since 2002, denied a published report Wednesday that he already has accepted a deal to be defensive coordinator at Miami.
"I haven't accepted a job anywhere," Young said when reached Wednesday evening.
Young, a 39-year veteran of the coaching ranks, has been linked to defensive-coordinator vacancies at Washington and Miami in recent weeks. CSTV.com reported Wednesday, citing unidentified sources, that Young agreed to a two-year deal to take over Miami's defense.
The once-proud Hurricanes are coming off a 5-7 season in which they ranked 56th nationally in scoring defense. Defensive coordinator Tim Walton was fired by head coach Randy Shannon last month after just one season.
Walton was hired as defensive coordinator at Memphis last week. Meanwhile, the search for his replacement at Miami has gone on. Young apparently is being considered.
Young, a Broyles Award finalist this season, has led two of the most successful defenses in school history during his tenure at Kansas.
Young, 61, made $214,120 in base salary in 2007, according to an open-records request filed last April.
These days, elite defensive coordinators at major programs are commanding more than $300,000.

Come on Lou. Open up the check book and give Bill Young a raise. It would be a shame to loose him, (or any other assistant) to another school. KU had a great season and I would really like yo have another one next season. I Belive that going 9-3 next year is not out of reach or hard to fathom. KU will need its core staff to get us there and keep us on top for years to come.

I hate to lose anyone from this staff, but that's the way coaching is. If you prove yourself somewhere, someone else is gonna try to steal you away. I would think he's possibly holding out for a head coaching position though... If you're making $215k, another $85K somewhere else isn't necessarily a deal breaker, especially considering the state's fairly low cost of living. However, a head coaching gig, now there's gold in them there hills...

Does coach Young have ties to south Florida? Why would he want that (except for money) when KU is so close?

Those posters on Tigerboard were having a hay-day with this last night. Man, they had me going, even showing the link on CSTV. I was so mad I was ready to break something. But once a cooler head had prevailed, I couldn't blame Coach Young if he left. All people should do what's best for them and their families, so if he feels the need to move, best of luck. But I sure would like to see him stay here and work with this awesome defense he will have returning next season. Rock Chalk!

Jeez LHS1908. Lemme ask you this. Would YOU move from Kansas to South Florida for a $100,000 pay raise?

Lew, get the checkbook out and give the guy a raise. We do not need any speed bumps right now on our way to the top. Make the guy one of the top paid assistants and move on. I'll except a bump in ticket prices to help out. Let's lock Young down. He should only leave for a head coaching job. The best is yet to come!!! I also remember an article saying that this team, the staff, had the most fun they have ever had coaching.

the only reason to go is $$ or ego. why leave a top 10 program/defense you built to go to a program in shambles? He came here so maybe he likes reclamation projects. If he does go, with the talent they have down there, the Canes will be a force once again - hopefully, without the thugs.

I guarantee you the $85,000 necessary to hit the magic $300,0000 salary will be returned to the athletic department 10 times over in royalties on athletic wear, tickets, and TV money if we keep Bill Young happy and go 9-3 or 10-2 next year. If we don't keep him and go 7-5.......was it really worth it to keep the $85 grand in your hip pocket, Lou?

I've searched many sites and the only site reporting this is CSTV. The Miami Hurricane site doesn't even mention this.
I hope he stays and finishes his career here in Lawrence.

jayhawk909603, you sir are an idiot! Miami has one of the best graduation rates in the country. They led the conference in 2007 with academic all-americans. In my opinion, "thugs" wouldn't do that. If you are going to label a team of thugs for getting into a fight with another team, keep this in mind. I would hope you wouldn't rush to quick judgement if somebody from Kansas State picked up Kerry Meier, on an extra point attempt, and body-slammed him to the ground in Memorial Stadium for absolutely no reason, and Kansas players stormed the field and whipped some A$$. I respect the brotherhood that Miami players have, and the tradition at Miami is far superior than at Kansas.

Hey - we made all that money playing at Arrowhead, remember??!! Add to that the payday from the Orange Bowl and there is plenty of money to reward Bill Young for the great job he's done at KU. I have always lived by "defense wins games" and to let our D Coordinator go over money would be a huge mistake for more reasons than I can count. If it was a head coaching job, well you would have to support that for him, but another D Coordinator position is a different story.

It bothers me when people come on this site and try to tell one of the most successful Athletic Directors in the nation how to do his job. It also bothers me when people come on this site and pretend to know what's best for Bill Young, when I'd be willing to bet he/she has never even had a conversation with him. It's one thing to give your opinion, but its a whole other thing to make comments like these.

I hope everybody realizes that the amount list above 214,000 is what he was getting for this year. Last year we were 6-6 so 214,000 is a pretty good wage. I guarantee you that all the assistants will receive nice pay raises after this orange bowl year. I don't think money is really a problem at KU. Lew knows how to fund raise like a MoFo. Just give it some time and it will all unfold the way it should.

notabandwagonfan- Why the anger? I don't think they are all thugs, but you have to admit they have had a lot of trouble in the football program. The Crimilones have had the same problems. That is what I like about Mangino. He may not get the most talented players but he avoids trouble makers.

I would suggest that notabandwagonfan refrain from name calling and obscenities. Jayhawks aspire to be intellectual and behave with class. I assume all who do not must be mildcats and tiger lilly hillbillies.
And Miami has been noted over the years for agitating conduct on the field, even before games, and for trouble makers. I can't say whether they are like that now, but they are remembered for this. We haven't forgotten Nebraska and Lawrence Phillips either.
Personally I like KU's lineman (Dion someone?) who got stuck in the drive through window trying to get his Chalupa while the popular Taco Bell commercial was playing. That was hilarious. Later his lawyer tried to claim it was not a Chalupa. That was even more funny.
On a positive note

Final Four is too
