Final, KU wins 75-64

AMES, Iowa - Many - if not all - eyes were on Darrell Arthur heading into Wednesday night’s Kansas University road trip to Ames, Iowa.

Led by 18 points from the sophomore forward - three days after his roughest outing of the season in a 61-60 loss at Oklahoma State - KU ousted a pesky Iowa State club 75-64 in Hilton Coliseum, improving to 25-3 overall and 10-3 in league play.

More importantly, the well-rounded showing from the Jayhawks gave KU a nice boost heading into Saturday’s rematch with Kansas State in Allen Fieldhouse. It will be KU’s most anticipated home game of the 2007-08 season, followed Monday night with a Senior Night matchup against Texas Tech.

The offense flowed through Arthur right from go, as he scored 12 points before the half. He was just as integral after Iowa State closed to within six points at 36-30 in the opening minutes of the second half. The Jayhawks went on an 8-0 run in response, and were again both mentally and physically strong as ISU closed to wtihin nine points inside the four-minute mark of the game.

That time, it was a straight-on three-pointer by Mario Chalmers which served as the dagger. That bucket was the final piece in a 15-point performance for the junior guard. Brandon Rush was the only other Jayhawk to notch double figues in the scoring column, scoring 12 of his 15 points after the break.

The Jayhawks played without Rodrick Stewart, who is in Seattle attending the funeral of his 21-year-old brother Allen, who was murdered a week ago. Neither Tyrel Reed or Jeremy Case logged playing time in his place, as Bill Self went with a four-man backcourt rotation against the overmatched Cyclone guards. Sherron Collins scored seven points playing without a knee brace as his bone bruise in his knee continues to improve. Darnell Jackson also netted seven for KU, while Sasha Kaun scored eight.

Tipoff for Saturday’s game against K-State is set for 8 p.m. Things will get started at 10 a.m., though, in Allen Fieldhouse with ESPN Gameday in town for the second straight year and the third time in four.

3:37, second half, KU leads 67-55

Jiri Hubalek made one of two free throws out of the timeout to get Iowa State to back within 10 points at 57-47, and Russell Robinson was off on a layup attempt in traffic on the other end. Wesley Johnson, though, lost the ball himself driving for the Cyclones, and Brandon Rush then cashed a layup in traffic while drawing a foul, making him the third Jayhawk to reach double figures in scoring. The free throw gave him 11 points and KU a bit more breathing room at 60-47.

Bryan Peterson answered with a long two, but Sasha Kaun then spun around again inside with the ball and dropped in an easy bucket. This time he was pushed in the back by Jiri Hubalek, getting him to the line. The charity missed, keeping KU ahead by 13.

Johnson was swatted by Kaun on the other end, but after a Brandon Rush three miss, Diante Garrett cut into the lane for two for Iowa State, leading to a 30-second ISU timeout.

Mario Chalmers continued to attack the basket and this time got a try at a couple of free throws, both of which he swished, keeping KU ahead comfortably by 13 points.

Rahshon Clark then got to the line for ISU, hitting a pair of free throws, and the Cyclones got a chance to pull to within single digits after a Darnell Jackson miss. Craig Brackins slipped in two off the glass to make it a nine-point game, but Mario Chalmers broke the hearts inside of Hilton Coliseum with a straight-away three atop the key before the full timeout, giving him 15 points.

7:57, second half, KU leads 57-46

Darnell Jackson made one of two free throws out of the timeout to give KU a cool 20-point lead. It was extended to 22 when Darrell Arthur slipped in his eighth bucket of the game on a slick spin move following a Sean Haluska miss.

Wesley Johnson swished another three for the Cyclones, giving him a game-high 17 points, and he then forced Arthur into a miss defensively. Diante Garrett cut to the basket for the ‘Clones and dropped two in off the glass while getting hit. His free throw missed, leaving KU ahead 57-40.

Bryan Petersen then hit a three for ISU from straight away to pull the Cyclones to within 14 points. Mario Chalmers then turned it over underneath, and another Wesley Johnson helped the Cyclones continue to creep closer, now trailing just 57-46.

Bill Self then called a timeout to regroup, but Darrell Arthur’s entry pass to Darnell Jackson went off the senior’s fingers and out of bounds, giving ISU a chance to continue its charge. This time, Petersen missed a three, but the Cyclones controlled the rebound. Hubalek was then off on a turnaround jumper against Arthur.

Arthur missed a jumper from the right wing after that, and Hubalek drew contact on Arthur going up for a jumper leading into a full timeout at the 7:57 mark.

11:47, second half, KU leads 54-35

Sasha Kaun scored a nifty two points off a feed from Brandon Rush out of the first full break of the half. Craig Brackins responded for ISU with his first points of the game.

Rush then stroked his second three of the night after an initial Mario Chalmers feed inside to Sasha Kaun was kicked back out. Brackins then got himself to the line and swished a pair, but KU still held a steady 49-34 lead.

Rush’s third trifecta of the game came after a Wesley Johnson miss from deep. Sherron Collins took down the long defensive rebound and after driving deep into the paint in transition flipped it back to the racing Rush, putting KU ahead comfortably by 18.

Collins pushed the lead even further after an ISU free throw, running an obstacle course with the ball in his hands around ISU defenders before dropping in two off the glass. That took KU to the 11:47 media timeout with a 54-35 edge.

15:54, second half, KU leads 44-30

Wesley Johnson started the second half scoring for ISU after a Darnell Jackson turnover with a quick pull-up two. Another Jackson giveaway led to a Sean Haluska three - the first ISU field goal from anyone other than Johnson or Jiri Hubalek. That cut KU’s lead to eight points at 36-28. Haluska then hit another two-pointer after a Jackson miss inside to pull KU’s lead down to six points at 36-30.

After a Bill Self timeout call, Darrell Arthur scored KU’s first points of the second stanza with a jumper from the right wing just inside the three-point line. Darnell Jackson then pushed the lead back to 10 points after a Diante Garrett miss for the Cyclones, quickly quieting Hilton Coliseum.

Sherron Collins turned an ISU turnover then into KU’s first free throw try of the game, getting hacked on a transition layup attempt. He cashed both to make it a quick 6-0 Jayhawk run and give himself five points on the night.

Hubalek tried to answer for ISU, but his miss turned into another transition try for the Jayhawks. This time it was Russell Robinson getting fouled going up to the glass. He too hit a pair of charities, extending KU’s lead to a game-high 14 points.

Halftime, KU leads 36-23

Wesley Johnson hit a long two for ISU out of the timeout, giving him eight points in the game, but Darrell Arthur stepped back and cashed a mid-range jumper off a crossover dribble on the other end, giving him 10 points on the night and keeping KU’s lead at 14 points.

KU called a timeout with 1:59 to play in the half and at the end of a lengthy possession out of it, Darrell Arthur put home two more tough points inside. Wesley Johnson’s third three-pointer of the game was the answer for ISU, who has seen Johnson and Jiri Hubalek combine for all but one of its points tonight.

Another empty Cyclone possession gave KU a chance for the final shot of the half, but Chalmers was no good on a long three. Still, KU took a 36-23 advantage into the locker room.

Arthur finished the first half with 12 points and seven rebounds for the Jayhawks, who look aggressive and are 16-of-32 from the floor. For Iowa State, Jiri Hubalek and Wesley Johnson each scored 11 points, with the rest of the team only notching one.

3:19, first half, KU leads 32-18

Darnell Jackson flipped in his first two points of the game in tough fashion to put KU up 28-13 after the full timeout, but Jiri Hubalek answered back for ISU with two of his own in the paint, giving the Cyclone forward nine points so far. Hubalek then stole a Brandon Rush pass on the defensive end.

Russell Robinson then missed a three after the TV timeout just inside of the eight-minute mark. Rahshon Clark drew contact on the other end for ISu, which was KU’s first team foul of the game, coming at the 6:35 mark. Clark made one of two free throws, and Hubalek hit two inside after a Darnell Jackson miss on the other end.

Sasha Kaun scored after a couple of blown ISU trips up the floor on offense, and the bucket came as the result of an impressive defensive carom by Brandon Rush. Rush then grabbed another board off a Cory Johnson miss, and this time, Darrell Arthur’s fourth bucket of the game put KU up 32-18 with roughtly four minutes to go in the half.

10:39, first half, KU leads 24-13

Russell Robinson controlled the game’s opening tip for Kansas, and after working the perimeter a bit, Brandon Rush fed Darrell Arthur, who missed a short turnaround hook shot to start the game.

Bryan Petersen missed a three for the Cyclones on the other end, and KU took possession after the rebound went out of bounds. Arthur again took an immediate feed on the other end, this time slipping in two on another short turnaround.

An ISU turnover gave KU a chance to extend its lead, but Mario Chalmers missed a three from the left wing. Wesley Johnson came back to cash a three of his own for the ‘Clones, putting ISU up 3-2.

Arthur missed a mid-range jumper after that, and Brandon Rush missed a mid-range two of his own after KU controlled the offensive glass. Possession again stayed with KU after a foul was called on Craig Brackins, and Brandon Rush cashed a three to put KU back ahead. Brackins then lost the ball off his foot taking a post feed. Mario Chalmers answered with a slashing floater to extend the KU lead to four points.

Chalmers then stole a perimeter pass of ISU’s and flew to the other end for an uncontested two-handed slam, continuing KU’s opening surge.

Hubalek answered with two more for the Jayhawks, and Brandon Rush was then called for a travel, giving ISU the ball back down by four. A turnover was forced by Russell Robinson, leading to the game’s first full break.

Iowa State was awarded the ball out of the timeout, but a shot clock violation was the result of the possession moments later, and Darrell Arthur answered for KU with a spinning two off the glass for his second bucket of the game.

Wesley Johnson came down to hit his second three of the game, pulling ISU back to within thiree points, and Brandon Rush couldn’t respond, as his mid-range two fell off the back iron.

Alex Thompson was short on a turnaround hook against Arthur, and Sasha Kaun responded with two tough points inside for KU, pushing the lead back to five points at 13-8.

After a couple of empty possessions, Mario Chalmers cashed a three for KU to extend the lead to 16-8. Jiri Hubalek answered twice for ISU, however, with a two and then a three, but Sherron Collins nixed the mini-run with a three of his own to push KU back ahead 19-13.

Arthur made it again an eight-point game, slipping in a Sherron Collins miss for his third bucket of the game. Wesley Johnson was then long on a three, and a Mario Chalmers three continued the Jayhawks surge to start things off.

Pregame

AMES, Iowa - With the biggest home game of the regular season on the horizon, the Kansas University men's basketball team should have no problem not looking past Big 12 North foe Iowa State.

That's because the Jayhawks can hardly afford to do so.

Entering tonight's second matchup of the season with ISU, KU carries a 3-3 road record in league play, with the latest addition to that mark coming in Saturday's 61-60 loss at Oklahoma State.

Emotions had some effect on last weekend's action, as KU as a team was mourning the losses of Rodrick Stewart's younger brother and Darnell Jackson's cousin just days earlier. Stewart will miss tonight's game, as he's in Seattle for the funeral services.

That could mean minutes for freshman Tyrel Reed, whose playing time in the Big 12 season has been limited due in large part to injuries to both of his ankles. Reed could also take on some added pressure in needing to provide a spark off the bench, as KU's usual energy guy off the pine, Sherron Collins, is still slowed some after bruising his knee in practice a couple of weeks back. He played just 11 minutes and was scoreless in Stillwater.

For KU, all eyes will also have keen interest in the performance of Darrell Arthur. The Jayhawks' leading scorer on the season was plagued yet again by foul trouble at Oklahoma State, being limited to six points and six rebounds in 17 minutes of run before earning his fifth foul call.

In KU's 83-59 win over ISU at home on Jan. 23, the bigs ruled the roost from Bill Self's club. Jackson scored 21 and snatched 11 rebounds, while Arthur chipped in 16.

KU enters tonight's action at 24-3 overall and 9-3 in Big 12 play - 1.5 games behind league-leading Texas at 11-2. Iowa State is 4-8 in league action, but all four wins have come at Hilton Coliseum. It took KU overtime to win in Ames last winter.

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m., with the game being aired on ESPN (Sunflower channel 33, 233 HD).

Let's go Hawks!

Darrell seems to be extra aggressive. He called for the ball with authority in the low post. That's a good sign.

I'm actually seeing them get up and down the court quickly on offense and defense. Nice!

What's the story with your handle HNJ?

Posted by NH_JHawk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 6:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I like our efforts on the boards and 2nd shots. Amazing what DA can do for us when he's not sitting on the bench in foul trouble!!!

Posted by txrockchalk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 6:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

DA is playing to his potential tonight...

Posted by melrank (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 6:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Same play to end the half as end of game at OSU. Same result.

Let's try something different.

Posted by txrockchalk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 6:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

HNJ, do you like Nebraska football and Kansas hoops?

Posted by Mr_Sandman (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 6:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree kansaspike, they look like they wanna win this one. "Controlled Fury" as my high school wrestling coached called it. Come out and compete hard, want to win, but execute your game plan. If KU can do that they are hard to beat.

Posted by truehawkfan (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 6:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why do we continue to let Brandon take the last shot? I thought we would have learned from the last game. He cannot create his own shot. Period. He is soft. It is nice to see the aggressiveness from the team though. DA is playing much harder, DJax is playing like he always plays, and Collins looks good. We keep playing with this intensity, we will be fine. I have been very critical of this team in the past couple of days, only because I expect them to play like they are right now. Mistakes will happen, but they are easier to take when there is no fear.

Anyone else notice we ran our "last play of the game" play at the end of the half? Not surprisingly, it didn't work.

Good job on Defense tonight. Aurthur has played a lot smarter tonight.

Of course... It is Iowa St.

Melrank--Sorry! Was reading the boards and not paying attention. I apologize.
txrockchalk--The story behind my name....well, Im a Jayhawk, married to a Husker. We cheer for both equally.

During the KU/MU game my husband didn't cheer for anyone BUT Nebraska. He was just excited that day that they had fired Callahan :)

HNJ - Although you've probably been on the short end of the stick for a lot of years, I bet you enjoyed the football game this year. He He.

Does anyone else believe we might be better without B Rush? I just see a different attitude from the other players. As hard as everyone is playing tonight, Rush still will NOT dive on the floor, or take contact. I am tired of that fricking floating runner. He is 6'6". Just take it to the rack and try to get to the rim. As a short kid, it just ticks me off. Sorry for the rant. Just my opinions.

Posted by huskersnjayhawks (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 6:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Melrank-actually T Rucker (Mizzou) and Justin Thornton (KU) are from my hometown. I had to show the hometown boys some love! Weird huh?

BCB- I'm tired of our "last shot" play as well. I'd rather see Mario take that then Brandon any day.

Posted by huskersnjayhawks (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 6:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Brandon Rush: I think he played better with his brace on then brace off. *shrugs* I think Brandon has done very little to elevate to the NBA. I think he bought himself a senior year at KU.

Posted by melrank (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well that kind of takes my enthusiasm away.

Posted by truehawkfan (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Once again, the opposing teams guards are coming out and doing what they want. We better not let them get back in the game.

Thats the way!! Get your butts to the free throw line. Stay aggressive guys!

Is this a new set of officials for this half or what?

Posted by melrank (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It's hard to evaluate the level of competition with the ISU big guys, but our bigs certainly look assertive. Nice stuff.

why doesn't BR shoot the ball more for gods sake??? He turns down more shots than anyone I've ever seen.

Posted by melrank (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Too late to change strategies now, but Iowa State is insane to play this fast of a game with us. The talent level isn't even close.

Posted by melrank (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The over-under on points for Reed tonight is officially 2.5

Posted by Royaljayhwk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'd say that line should be moved to minutes....

Posted by NH_JHawk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Melrank,

This is the first game in a while where we have dictated the tempo. I agree with you that it is difficult to evalutate KU's level of play tonight given that ISU is a MUCH inferior opponent, even playing in traditionally tough Hilton.

Posted by melrank (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ooops, Update.

Both lines just moved to 0.5.

C'mon guys.

Our perimeter defense is weak again tonight.

Can someone please teach Darrell to not fade every stinkin time he takes a jumper? Hi! You're 6'9" and you've got some pretty good hops...put your crotch in their face!

That last part sounded bad, but the kid drives me up a wall with this.

Posted by NH_JHawk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Shocking! Another opponent has a player on the verge of having a career night vs. KU. Will somebody please defend the perimeter?

Posted by Royaljayhwk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Rather evident that nothing has changed. Just a poorer opponent.

Posted by ku98 (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Wesley Johnson always plays well against us.

Posted by Royaljayhwk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I have an idea. Slow down the game since they are coming back and make it easier for them! Oh wait, that's what they always do anyways. I'm silly.

Posted by melrank (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It seems that Iowa St. has picked up the intensity level considerably and our defense looks suspect again. Man, why are our guards struggling to defend so much?

Posted by melrank (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh, boy, our bench looks inspired. What's up with that?

Posted by Royaljayhwk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think they are doing there best. I think the crumbling schedule at the beginning of the season didn't have guard play like the Big12 does and now we are seeing the true team.

Posted by dek9219 (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

get Cole in there Bill, what's wrong with you anyway???

Posted by txrockchalk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

That Mary-O is a heck of a player! :)

Posted by jross1972 (Johann Ross) on February 27, 2008 at 7:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You know, it's time to be realistic. I think the sand is running out of the hourglass on this Kansas team. You cant play like this so late in the season. Now is the time when you need to hit a stride (preferably like 2 games ago). I hate to call attention to the elephant in the room that everyone is pretending doesn't exist, but Kansas is in real trouble. Keep in mind this is Iowa State. Not Duke. Not Memphis. Not UCLA.

Dont let the point spread fool ya. This team has some real issues right now.

Posted by ku98 (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Because they gamble too much to cut the pass and get the steal, or collapse too low to double-team the bigs and try to strip the ball out of their hands, and the shooters become wide open.

Posted by NH_JHawk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think Mario needs to step up and be the vocal leader while Sherron is playing injured. He's the one who's fearless not afraid to take the clutch shots. He's been big tonight!

Posted by Royaljayhwk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree as much as it hurts to say jross....

Posted by melrank (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You know, Royal, I really don't want to believe that, but how much longer can you pretend there's not something to your comment? I'm starting to think you're very right.

they are trying to brag up the Hawks, but they suck

He's been big? On what? Offense? Try some D. Seems like when they have amazing D, they always score a lot.

Posted by Royaljayhwk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It's terrible. I expect them to win out until the Big12 tourney. Then we will get the real test against another guard team in the tourney. If they lose in the conference tourney, I'm scared for the NCAA.

Posted by woodhawk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why aren't we running? There's no immediate turn from the big men to look for an outlet. Force the issue boys!!

Posted by NH_JHawk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Royal,

Let me clarify that for Mario on the offensive end. I'd agree with you that our perimeter D is and has been VERY suspect. It's been a problem since we started B12 play pretty much.

Posted by dek9219 (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

how pathetic was that? RR getting stripped from the ball

Posted by Royaljayhwk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 7:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

An issue that has surrounded this team for years is that they play down to there competiton so when they play a well rounded team, they are not prepared.

These guys are just so low key. Brandon smiles after the semi-air ball, the bench walks out to meet the players during the TO. I don't get it, but this team just has a relaxed personality.

I want to see us bring it on Saturday.

Posted by KUglow (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 8:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You know what really burns me about tonight's game? The game ended at 7:59! Why is it every time we play on Big Monday, the stupid Big East game ends about 20 minutes after our tip off. Here was our chance to screw Duke fans and we blew it. I'm done with this team, they can't do anything right. I mean, we barely beat a terrible ISU team. Yep, we might as well just play in the NIT.

Good call mel. We need a couple guys with attitude. Not cocky, bad attitudes, but a swagger. Too many issues to discuss right now. 11 point win vs. Iowa State? I hope coach isn't satisfied, we should've run them out of the gym.

I don't think that will be an issue. I see them coming out and giving KSU a whooping, but I think that is purely because of what happened out west. We'll all get excited and think they are back, but I think it will be an act.

Thats just it. I WANT to believe. But believing in something when there is no evidence to believe in it is just having blind faith. In other words, they have to show us something! If you would have told me in early January that a month later we'd take the floor like whipped dogs I would have argued with you until my face turned every shade of blue. That's how astonishing this nosedive has been. We're not playing with heart.

That gets you early exit from the tournament.

I hope they show something against Kansas State. This game on Saturday is another one of those bellwether games...

Everyone remember how much you hated Beasley when he guaranteed a win last year and he hadn't even enrolled in school yet? That took a lot of guts, but the guy brings game to back it up and his tough talk motivated that team. He was a leader instantly.

I'd like a little of that cockiness from some of our guys right now. It might force someone to emerge as our "vocal" leader.

I agree with a lot of you when you say this team is in trouble. I don't like the laid back attitude of some of our players. DA had a different look tonight though. If he didn't show up pissed off, then we lose this game too. For being such a defensive minded team in the beginning, we have done a 180. We just want them to either score or turn it over so we don't have to play defense.

Posted by Royaljayhwk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 8:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

We're not bashing. We still love them just as much. But who of us are used to seeing a team doing a complete 180 like this? I can't remember one. Usually they start out poorly and finish strong. This shipped has got to be turned around. The question is who is going to be the captain? If someone doesn't step up, there will be a silent mutiny.

Posted by melrank (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 8:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Flip - it's fair to say that there might be some legit "bashing" going on, but a huge percentage of the comments here are far from "bashing". IMO you are grossly exagerating.

You've got very passionate, and often times, pretty knowledgable fans posting here that want to see us play to our potential.

Like it or not, we are not playing at that level and what you have here is the written form of the same banter and criticism that goes on in everyone's living room or the neighborhood sports bar during a game.

I'd bet most everyone here bleeds crimson and blue.

Posted by NH_JHawk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 8:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

truehawkfan,

I agree completely. A prime example of not playing solid D tonight (besides the consistent lack of tenacious perimeter D game after game) involved DA playing on the low post.

Two times that stick out to me were when Hubalek drove the baseline. 1st time DA commits a foul when all he had to do was seal off the baseline by stepping on it. He was in position to do that. Same thing 2nd time but instead Hubalek gets a reverse layup and again all DA had to do was seal off the baseline. That's basic fundamental low post defense...something you're taught in middle school. Frustrating!

You are right, we need to get realistic. So, I can admit it, we are not playing as well as we did earlier in the season. But you know what, we are not as bad as some of you think we are either. Being realistic goes both ways. I saw some things in the first half tonight that I hadn't seen in a while. But no matter what we did tonight, nobody would have been happy. Win by 40, ISU is just bad. Win by 10, we are bad. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. So, let's all be realistic by all means. But if you can't find just one thing to be positive about tonight, then I'm not sure you really are being realistic.

Flipboarder, if you don't want to hear the truth about the team we all love, then go somewhere else. That is the whole reason I started commenting. I have found a group of very smart, basketball savvy individuals that actually know something about the game, and can be truthful on this site. Again, we are very competitive fans, and we love winning. Being a fan does not mean we have to run around saying everything is OK and act like nothing is wrong. We LOVE this team, and because we love them, we are very concerned with our lack of effort and emotion we are seeing from our team right now. Now, go read yourself a bedtime story where everyone lives happily ever after.

The voice on this team that is missing is Julian Wright. He was the most vocal of this whole group and of course is gone, but I really think he was the one to motivate last year and no one else has taken over his vocal leadership. I mean, RR doesn't even live with the rest of the guys, he lives alone in his own apartment house, nice article about that, but I mean, where is the team spirit in that kind of thing?

I'll give you some positives:

We were 7-13 on treys. Very nice, especially on the road.

We were 14-18 from the line with several makes the last 90 seconds.

We won the battle of the boards (Jaybate, you listening) 43-30.

Our big guys were aggressive and we actually looked to establish a consistent post presence.

See, we can be positive :)

DA has a decent game with 18pts and showed some aggressiveness in the 1st half, but since you all put me in a "glass half empty" mood, I will add that he continues to play defense like a moron, and that he shot 0 FT tonight, because of that damn turnaround fadeaway jumper that he occasionally makes. 9 for 18 from the field is not that great for a big man. He needs to take it hard to the rim (same for BRush) and draw some fouls.

I didn't get to listen to the game, but from what I heard from the Associated Press, it sounds like KU played well for the most part. I gather, though, from your posts, that the perimeter defense was still a shambles and that we slacked off some in the second half. Nevertheless, there's still hope for us to win the Big 12 regular season.

Yeah, can DA dunk? I bet he could throw down some mean ones! There was a few tonight that he got the second chance and just barely laid them in. A monster dunk or two would do a lot in the middle of a game on the road to get this team jump started. But a lay-up is cute I guess. Heck, I'm 5'11" and I would have atleast dunked it. No monster jams or anything, but how much easier could it be for him? Someone needs to slap them all in the face and call them pansies or something before the game starts to get them riled up!

When I became a Jayhawk in the fall of 1966, the first three things I was taught were, One, basketball was, is and always would be King at KU. Two, Kansas State was the sworn enemy and, Three, it was never too early to talk about next year.

I have found this looking forward by us Kansas fans unique and really quite interesting. After watching the last eight games, here it goes:

2008/2009
P/G Collins/Appleton
S/G Chalmers/Reed
C Aldrich/Morris
P/F Morris/Thomas
Swing Little/Releford

2009/2010----Sub Henry for Chalmers

It appears we are going to in for some fun!!!!!

Oh, by the way, unlike some writers I have read, Teahan, Bechard, Morningstar, Buford and Kleinmann who are all great guys, will be where they belong....being cheered by us at garbage time.

I attended KU from 91-94 So don't even get me started on how much I hate Duke....or UNC for that matter. (Did I mention I still have a foul taste in my mouth from UTEP and Purdue too)

Posted by kuhawksr1 (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 9:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ok ... here's my ramble/rant:

Ya'll ... you're looking for silver lining on a set of glaring problems. I'm very concerned about this team. They are NOT playing at a level that will get them past the Sweet 16.

Regular season championship is out, tournament championship is not looking good if we have to go through a 3 seed State away from home so all we've got left is a run of six in the dance. You really think we can outscore anyone in the top 5 right now ... especially away from Allen? We let weak teams dominate us during certain periods of games ... some longer than others. Our guards rarely penetrate the lane and get layups. Our bigs are good at the rim but do not consistently hit jumpers. Teams out hustle us ... their guards pester us and cause us to take bad drives to the basket often resulting in turnovers/steals. We don't get enough wide open looks at three and when we do we don't consistently knock 'em down in key situations. Our picks out top don't provide enough separation from the defender and we don't see many pick and rolls. We let teams hang around too long. We let double digit leads evaporate quickly. We don't defend the three very well ... too many open looks against us.

Wanna know how to beat KU? Pester KU guards on defense and spread the floor and take our guards on one-on-one to the basket on offense.

I'm not a pessimist ... just calling it like I see it. I watch a bunch of ball and we're simply not playing at a level that will produce a championship. Sure we dominate Nebraska, Colorado, etc. but they're not the types of teams we'll have to go through in the end. When we play within conference, we typically get the opponent's 'A' game. KU rarely plays an 'A' game against top caliber teams and often underperforms enough to lose or, at best, barely win against obviously inferior talent. I just don't get it.

Posted by crimsoninracine (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 9:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Did we all watch the same game? We were up 22 or 24 in the 2nd half! From there, we got beat. We're soft. He's telling Sherron "you can't get up" when he fell on the floor and got called for traveling. Are you kidding me? You can't get up? Every player learns that in 3rd grade biddy ball! You can't get up? Go have a seat down at the end and grow a brain! Oh, and help with the towels at the timeout! But no, our soft coach tells our soft players "you can't get up", as if they might not realize that the rule hasn't changed since the guy had to take the ball out of the basket after each score! And, he looks like he's going to cry when he's saying it! We're soft, top to bottom. It continues to shine through.

I know, someone will have to point out that he's hurt. Yeah! He's hurt. Why do we keep playing Collins when he's hurt? Are you kidding...we don't have anyone else who can play in his place? Come on, this is Kansas basketball with the great recruiter at the helm. We've got to have someone else who can play.

Where I learned this game, if you should win by 50 and you only win by 11, that's a 39-point loss! We should have buried that team. The only team that might be worse is OSU. Oh, we lost to them.

We are soft. And, yes, I'm a fan. If I didn't love the Jayhawks and bleed crimson I wouldn't care that they're soft!

But really, where IS that fire?

In reference to MOJHawk's comments about us cheering for our subs.

Maybe someone who is fortunate enough to actually get to the games can correct me, but it appears on TV that our bench is practically asleep during the game.

Do those guys ever get up and cheerlead? It's just another piece of the puzzle that really bugs me.

I read these posts and I feel like the commercial where the guy asks, "Are you questioning my fanhood?" Look, bottom line here. Im a dedicated fan. Im both optimistic and realistic about our chances. Sometimes those two things go hand in hand. Sometimes they don't.

I want to be Paula Abdul, but sometimes you have to be Simon Cowell. The truth about this team is as inescapable as is gravity, and it's just as heavy: KU is NOT tournament ready and we show NO SIGNS of getting there any time soon. Send hate mail to my secretary, but it's the truth. We're not playing with any kind of heart.

I feel like Lt. Kaffee about to put Colonel Jessep on the stand, trying to make him admit he ordered the "Code Red".

"You want Answers?"
"I think I'm entitled to them."
"YOU WANT ANSWERS???"
"I want the TRUTH!"
"YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!"

The truth is we stink. 25 teams in the country could have beaten Iowa State as we did tonight. That's not gonna get it done.

Just the facts, ma'am...just the facts.

melrank,

Thanks for the rebounding stat against ISU. It appears Arthur, especially, can come up BIG against a team with a 4-9 conference record.

Now we must see if he can beast on Beasley.

What do you think the chances of Arthur getting a double double on Beasley are?

Posted by NH_JHawk (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 9:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Jaybate,

Considering DA only has 4 double doubles all season I'd say not good. The chances that Beasley gets a double double on DA? 99.9% to go for his 25th of the season.

Jaybate - I actually felt guilty after the little jab. I respect your opinions more that just about anyone else's on this board. It was meant in fun, but sorry anyway.

I'm just a little curious about your continued concern for our rebounding when often the stats don't reflect an area of deficiency.

Anyway, I would say that the chances of a double-double against Beasley are slim to none, but I think we will win the battle of the boards on Saturday. Unfortunately, that won't help our guards with their perimeter defense or stop Beasley from getting 30.

We have to slow down head case Walker and not let some other yahoo (Pullen) go crazy. Then we win.

big deal. So the 'hawks beat a bottom-of-the-barrel ISU team by 11 points. I love my jayhawks, but the truth is that they are by far the most over rated team in the top 15. Let's see ....... Weak preseason schedule (no fault of there own - BC and U of A should have been better) and ZERO wins against a team in the top 25. None. Nada. Zip. Add the most timid over-rated player (Brandon) who fears going to the basket in traffic and refuses to step up when needed and a coach incapable of instilling a bit of passion in his players (can't coach what you don't know) and you have the formula for a 15 v. 2 upset.
I pray to god that doesn't happen but I won't be suprised.

I am afraid that jross is right on. K-State has truly sucked since they played us and, just like a broken clock is right twice every twenty four hours, I predict that KState will play the second game of their lives and if the Hawks aren't prepared for total war, we are going to get smacked.

However, I am driving all the way from St.Louis Saturday to see this game in person because this game is that important and in the last 17 years, KU is 24 and 1 in games I have attended. { The one loss was to Norm and Mizzou and it still hurts to this very day]

So everybody relax...unless Norm comes out as the guest coach, then we're screwed.

Posted by jaybate (anonymous) on February 27, 2008 at 10:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

melrank,

I was also impressed with RR getting TEN reebs. How many reebs do you expect RR to grab against KSU?

I mention RR and Arthur in regards to KSU not because I think KSU is so good; KSU isn't. They are a VERY up and down team with 18-9 record--a team whose best win other than over KU was Pitt very early. And KSU has been badly whipped by the likes of Xavier.

If Arthur can't double double against KSU in a big game at home, and if RR is going to be held to normal reeb numbers, I doubt KU is going to hold much of a rebounding edge even against a KSU team that seems to be witnessing a Bill Walker melt-down.

I still shudder to think what might happen to KU on the boards vs. Memphis, Tennessee, and UCLA, despite this strong showing against 4-9 ISU.

I predict Jackson get a double double with 11 rebounds and 13 points. I predict KU wins by 11 points and leaves Iowa with a smile on there faces knowing they have found there balance they so badly need....
Yes Rush plays also ..

melrank,

not to worry. i respect your takes also. we just are coming at this rebounding issue from different assumptions and it is leading us to find the other's position hard to fathom.

You look at total rebounds and see KU usually close to significantly above the opponent in total rebounds. You conclude: we are doing okay, so lighten up jaybate you worry wart.

I look at these tendencies for our short guards to grab a lot of rebounds and our bigs to frequently not grab that many and I say: whenever our short guards run up against big guards who push them out of position, our guard rebounding is going to fall and our bigs are not going to be able to pick up the slack.

I confess that I tend to analyse everything KU does with an eye for what it implies about how they will do vs. top competition in the Madness. I am getting old and realize I might not be able to wait another 20-30 years for a ring.

I looked at the KC Kool Jazz Quintet in January and thought the only danger for a short guard dominated team was its reliance on short guards to rebound. Sooner or later in the Madness, I thought, some team is going to deny KU its short guard rebounding. I never dreamed KSU would do it near mid season.

I do think this team's weaknesses have been exposed and they are presently working through a fitful process in front of everyone of learning how to win a new way.

I have a lot confidence in Bill Self's ability to remold a team on the fly--not so much junk old schemes, but readjust the mix of who does what--and get this team back to being dangerous in March.

But I still think relying on short guard rebounding is a recipe for disaster from the Sweet Sixteen onward.

You're a gentleman and a scholar. If persons didn't give me a poke in the ribs every now and then, I would feel neglected. :-)

I was watching in 86 and 88 and 91 and 93 and 03 and..... these guys just have something special about them...maybe this is our year...who knows?..just win the B12 and the tourney then ............Rock Chalk..........

In the upcoming games Rush needs to drive the basket 5-7 times a game to find out once and for all if he can do anything but shoot 3's. I'm sure the scouts would like to know too. It seems he's turned it over or missed his 'running J' most every drive the past several games.

I was hoping Jackson would be our star this season. I think he had the potential, but isn't getting enough touches. Arthur likes to take 20 shots a game. I've been afraid from our first game this season that Arthur would try to do too much. He's good for follow up shots and guarding a little big man. He also appears to have attitude problems with things get tough. At times, I wish that Kaun was playing instead of him. I believe Kaun is playing his best ball ever with fire in his eyes.

Collins is a MESS this year. I don't know the stats, but he seems to have more turnovers than points and assists combined. This has got to be one of the biggest softmore slumps I've ever seen.

There, I feel better trying to diagnose this team with it's problems.

On the bright side, nice game Robinson... good effort, nice under control drives, nice not overdoing your role. I still have HOPES that we can fix some of these problems before the tourney.

Yes, we're a spoiled hard to please crowd. As I've said before I think we're all upset because we see so much more potential than they're giving us. We need a great game against a worthy opponent to give us our swagger back. Let's hope KSU plays a great game this Saturday and we beat them soundly.

Wow Jross, I've never seen you so down. Hang in there buddy... we may have problems, but we haven't gotten to 'we stink' yet. That would have been justified if we had lost tonight. Give them a little credit.

I sure wish KU could have one of these 63% three point shooting nights against a team like Texas. If they can just survive and advance for awhile, surely they will.

I want America to see the KC Kool Jazz Quintet in the bright lights of the Madness. That was still one of the most beautiful stretches of basketball I have seen in a long time, at least since the '86 team.

God, basketball is beautiful, when a team gets in deep synch.

MO Jahwk, glad you are going Saturday. We need your MOJO.

Jaybate, I must have missed it, please explain the phrase KC Kool Jazz Quintet.

Mitch4KU, I love your vibe. You wouldn't be Mitch Richmond would you? I always suspected you were a closet KU fan.

At the start of the season I had a vibe that something ironic would happen regarding Julian leaving (when he had always said he wouldn't) and Brandon staying (when we all assumed he was gone) and us winning the title this year. If I remember correctly Florida had a little lull last February...

Whew... That's about all the positive thinking I've got. I'm usually the pessimistic one.

Good win tonight hawks. Our intensity level was very evident tonight and you could just tell from the very beginning that there was no way our players were going to allow us to lose tonight. Bring that kind of intensity and fire every game and we could go along way into March and see the first week of April.

Now lets go get us some kitty cat on Saturday boys!!!!!
