Tying up loose ends from KU’s 69-45 win over Colorado. It was the second time in two weeks the Jayhawks have used the Buffs as a bounceback victim while coming off a loss. Mario Chalmers was as steady as always for KU with 13 points, five assists, three rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Throwback beatdown: KU thumps Colorado, 69-45, in front of Jayhawk hoops alumni
Wearing blue throwback uniforms, Kansas University got back to its pre-Texas ways in thumping Colorado Saturday in Allen Fieldhouse, 69-45, in front of several KU hoops alumni in town to celebrate the program’s 110th birthday. Mario Chalmers led the way for KU with 13 points, including a three-of-five showing from three-point range. KU, which had been 4-of-26 from deep in the past two outings, went 8-of-19 Saturday from beyond the arc. Chalmers also had five assists, two blocks and two steals to his name. Darnell Jackson was the only other Jayhawk to score in double figures for the Jayhawks (12 points), who were an efficient 24-of-50 from the floor. Sasha Kaun and Darrell Arthur each scored eight for KU, while Brandon Rush chipped in seven.

Manning ‘the best’
All-American earned team's respect
Mark Randall was on two Final Four basketball teams at Kansas University, and played parts of four seasons in the NBA. That included a half-season with the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls during their dynasty run. Now working in community relations for the Denver Nuggets, kids often ask Randall who he considers the best player he’s ever faced. “They think it’s Michael Jordan,” Randall said. “But the best player I ever played against was Danny Manning. Every day in practice for two years.”
Memories still fresh
Jayhawks won it all 20 years ago
Where were you, when the clock hit 10:09 p.m. on April 4, 1988? Where were you, when Ricky Grace heaved a three-pointer that thunked off the backboard and fell into Danny Manning’s hands at the buzzer? When Kansas University’s men’s basketball team beat Oklahoma, 83-79, to win its last national championship 20 years ago - a jubilant Monday night in Kansas City, Mo. - just where were you?

Wood: Tracking down team fun, but difficult, task
Google, cell phone indispensible
The phone rang for a man I presumed to be Lincoln Minor, the former Kansas University basketball player who played 34 games in the 1987-88 season. “Hello?” the man on the other end answered. “Hi, is this Lincoln?” I asked. “Yes,” he said. “The Lincoln who played basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks?” “No,” the man replied. “This is his father.” Hey, that’s progress.
Woodling: Miracles no slouches
Supporting cast full of good players
Two NCAA men’s basketball championships. One common denominator. Both of Kansas University’s national-title teams were regarded as one-man shows - uncannily similar tours de force by Clyde Lovellette in 1952 and Danny Manning in 1988.
KU players revered coach Brown
Rarely did Larry Brown’s barking fall on deaf ears. The Kansas University basketball coach in 1988 had demanded respect from his players through what guard Jeff Gueldner called “intimidation and fear.” “He was a little guy,” Gueldner said, “but he was godlike in that way.” But this one time, just before tipoff of the 1988 NCAA championship game between Kansas and Oklahoma, the players went their own way.
Current Jayhawks thrilled to meet past greats
Ed Manning, assistant coach on Kansas University’s 1988 national title team and Dave Robisch, star of the 1971 Final Four squad, shook hands with Darrell Arthur as KU’s sophomore forward stepped onto the court for Friday’s practice in Allen Fieldhouse.
Keegan: Keegan: Tubbs tickled for KU
When a college basketball coach speaks into a microphone, it’s not too difficult to guess the forthcoming words. Winning coach: “First off, I’d just like to congratulate Whatsamatta U for a great effort tonight. That is one really well-coached basketball team. He does a terrific job with those kids.” Losing coach: “We got great shots; we just weren’t knocking them down tonight.”
