Final, Texas wins 72-69

Putting together a carbon copy of a stellar first half offensively didn’t happen for Kansas University Monday night after halftime. That said, Texas’ huge performance in the final 20 minutes pushed the No. 11 Longhorns past the No. 3 Jayhawks, 72-69, in Austin.

The loss drops KU to 23-2 overall and 8-2 in Big 12 game, now behind Kansas State for first place.

A.J. Abrams, who scored 14 points for Texas, blocked a crucial Brandon Rush three look in the late minutes, then hit two huge free throws late in the game. Connor Atchley led Texas with 16 points, including a four-of-four three-point showing in the first half. Damion James, who played just three minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, scored 12 of his 14 points after the break. D.J. Augustin scored 10 for Texas despite just hitting one field goal try all night.

Darrell Arthur scored 22 points for KU to lead all scorers, including 14 in the first half. Darnell Jackson and Mario Chalmers had 13 apiece and Rush 10.

Chalmers, who hit one big three in the final minute, had another look at one as the clock expired after a D.J. Augustin missed free throw.

The telling stat was Texas outrebounding Kansas 36-35 after KU held a 23-13 rebounding advantage at the break.

The Jayhawks are now 1-2 against ranked opponents this season, and 0-2 against them away from home.

KU faces Colorado this Saturday at home at 12:45 p.m.

:32.2, second half, Texas leads 69-67

Mario Chalmers went to the line for a one-and-one after drawing contact out of the timeout. he hit one of two, and after an A.J. Abrams three miss, Justin Mason corralled an offensive board to allow Texas to melt some clock.

D.J. Augustin missed a long jumper and A.J. Abrams couldn’t hit off an inbound with just two seconds on the shot clock. Abrams made up for it, though, deflecting a Brandon Rush three look from the corner and setting up a trip for Damion James to the stripe with :40.5 to go.

James hit both charities, pushing the Texas lead to five points, but Chalmers answered quickly with a guarded three up top, keeping KU within two with :32 to play.

2:29, second half, Texas leads 66-63

A.J. Abrams hit a pull-up jumper for Texas around a screen to put the ‘Horns up by two out of the full break, and a miss by Darrell Arthur set up another opportunity to drive for Justin Mason, who this time was fouled hard by Darnell Jackson. Mason hit one of two, putting Texas up by three.

D.J. Augustin then scored against a melting shot clock for his first field goal of the game, putting Texas up 62-57 and forcing Bill Self to call a 30-second timeout.

Sherron Collins was stripped while driving by D.J. Augustin, and on the other end, Justin Mason forced the Erwin Center to explode, skying to tip in a Damion James miss and extend Texas’ lead to seven points with less than five minutes to play.

Mario Chalmers ended a five-minute scoring drought for KU by hitting a pair of free throws with KU in the double bonus. That also snapped a 10-0 Texas run.

Chalmers scored again after Texas failed to score on the possession, slashing to the rim for two, giving him nine points.

Damion James pumped some more adrenaline into the Longhorn faithful then, finishing off a D.J. Augustin miss with a follow-up slam. Darrell Arthur scored just his third bucket of the second half in response, giving him 20 points and again pulling KU to within three.

Augustin drew contact on Brandon Rush for the junior’s fourth foul leading into the final T.V. break of regulation.

7:28, second half, game tied 57-57

Darnell Jackson took a dish from Brandon Rush out of the timeout up high and slammed it for two, drawing the third foul against Damion James in the process. Jackson missed the free throw, but came away with a steal on the defensive end. KU couldn’t convert after Mario Chlamers missed finger roll.

Sasha Kaun was called for a foul which sent Texas into the bonus at the 10:06 mark, but Gary Johnson missed the front end of a one-and-one, sending the ball back with KU. Sherron Collins then went up and under, squeezing in a layup for his first points of the game. A.J.Abrams was then off the mark on a three attempt, but Damion James off an offensive rebound drew the third foul of the game on Darrell Arthur. He hit a pair of free throws to pull Texas within one.

KU had multiple opportunities to extend the lead on the trip back, but a Mario Chalmers three miss and a Sherron Collins layup miss gave the ball back to Texas. Gary Johnson again got to the line but continued to struggle from there. After hitting his first two of the night, he finally made one after three straight misses, tying it at 57-57.

Sherron Collins missed a three from the left wing and Damion James tipped the board to A.J. Abrams. D.J. Augustin missed again for Texas, making him 0-for-9 from the floor, but the third foul of the game on Russell Robinson gave possession back to Texas and sent the game into a full break.

11:18, second half, Texas leads 54-53

Justin Mason drew contact underneath while shooting again after a KU turnover out of the timeout. Mason hit one of two, putting Texas ahead of Kansas by three at 51-48.

Darrell Arthur missed a turnaround hook while double-teamed on the other end, and KU then committed its fifth foul of the half.

Brandon Rush swished a three from the left elbow after a KU full timeout, and Sasha Kaun then gave KU the lead once again with a turnaround two off the glass inside.

Damion James responded with his second three of the game for Texas, then he swatted a Mario Chalmers look inside on the defensive end. Texas couldn’t capitalize, but the ‘Horns carried a 54-53 lead into the second full break of the half at 11:18.

15:50, second half, Texas leads 50-48

Brandon Rush picked up his third foul of the game and headed to the bench just 15 seconds into the second half.

D.J. Augustin then missed his eighth field goal attempt of the game, but Justin Mason corralled the offensive board and scored, drawing contact in the process to pull Texas within two. After Mason missed the free throw, a lane violation gave him a second chance, which he cashed.

Darrell Arthur then started what he had yet to finish after one half, scoring his seventh field goal from the baseline, giving him 16 points so far and KU a three-point lead.

Mason then scored again after having his initial attempt swatted by Mario Chalmers. Darrell Arthur quickly answered with two more off the glass, but Damion James awoke the sleeping crowd with a three from straight-away to tie it up. Arthur tried to match the trifecta but was off to the right. Atchley then put Texas ahead with a dunk inside off a nifty Augustin feed.

Mario Chalmers came back to draw a foul atop the key and get to the line, hitting two free throws to tie it up again, 48-48.

A.J. Abrams and Brandon Rush then traded misses, and Atchley again soared in off a bounce pass feed for another two-handed slam, keeping the crowd awake.

Halftime, KU leads 42-38

Darnell Jackson hit one of two free throws before Texas tried to run out much of the rest of the first half clock. But the ‘Horns turned it over with 20 seconds to go in the half, giving KU the final shot.

Jackson missed a long jumper, sending KU to the break with a four-point lead. Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson combined for 24 of KU’s 42 first half points, with Arthur doing so on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor in a variety of ways.

Connor Atchley did most of the damage for Texas with all 12 of his points coming off of 4-of-4 three-point shooting. A.J. Abrams had 10 for the Longhorns. KU outrebounded Texas 23-13.

:55.8, first half, KU leads 41-38

Texas missed an inside two out of the half’s final T.V. timeout, and Darnell Jackson gave the lead back to KU with a mid-range two on the baseline, but Connor Atchley again struck the Jayhawks with a three-pointer, making him four-of-four so far from long range. Darrell Arthur scored yet again to give KU a three-point lead at 39-36 and giving him a team-high 12 points.

Texas called a 30-second timeout and taht led to a Gary Johnson mid-range miss. Brandon Rush soared for a defensive board and fed Darrell Arthur, who scored another acrobatic two inside to give KU its biggest lead yet at five points.

Gary Johnson scored two and drew contact underneath for Texas, but couldn’t connect on the charity, keeping KU up by three.

3:35, first half, KU leads 35-33

After Alexis Wangmene swatted a Sherron Collins driving layup, Cole Aldrich, fresh into the game, followed it up with a falling two of his own, pulling KU within one.

Clint Chapman answered for Texas with a two-pointer inside off a Justin Mason miss, but Brandon Rush finally pulled the Jayhawks even with the ‘Horns with a daring three-pointer from straight-up. Rush then pushed the Jayhawks ahead, following a Mario Chalmers layup miss in transition, giving the junior seven points after a slow start.

D.J. Augustin was the first to benefit from Texas being in the bonus, hitting two free throws to tie Texas back up with KU, and KU failed twice to regain the lead.

Mario Chalmers was able to prevent Texas from snatching the lead by drawing a charge on Augustin, and on the other end, Darnell Jackson slammed home his third field goal inside, putting KU up by two going into the next full break.

7:42, first half, Texas leads 29-26

Gary Johnson hit both free throw attempts out of the timeout, and Darrell Arthur then followed it by drawing contact inside against Connor Atchley to give himself a try at the line. He, too, hit a pair, giving him a team-high six points so far.

Texas then subbed mammoth sophomore Dexter Pittman in for Justin Mason, giving the Longhorns a huge lineup on the floor.

A trio of turnovers back-to-back-to-back took over the next few possessions before D.J. Augustin got himself to the line just before the midway point of the first half. He sunk a pair, making the two teams a combined nine-of-nine at the stripe so far.

Darnell Jackson tried to drive the baseline for a slam after that but missed long, the knock out of bounds kept possession with KU. Jackson took the ball from the wing and floated one up to the rim, which ultimately fell in. A.J. Abrams’ second mid-range jumper of the game kept Texas up four, but Darrell Arthur answered back with two more from the elbow, giving him eight points.

An offensive rebound on the other end went off Gary Johnson’s back, giving the ball to KU. Brandon Rush passed up a three look and kicked to Arthur for another elbow jumper, but A.J. Abrams again came back with a three - his second of the game.

Sherron Collins missed a three for KU, but the Jayhawks collected back-to-back offensive boards before Arthur missed from straight on, sending it back with Texas. D.J. Augustin missed inside and couldn’t capitalize.

11:50, first half, Texas leads 20-18

Darnell Jackson roughed up Gary Johnson and jarred the ball loose out of the timeout, but an awkward-looking layup attempt by Brandon Rush in transition gave the ball back to Texas. Gary Johnson then went to work against Sasha Kaun and scored a bucket. Sasha Kaun canceled it out with a follow-up dunk on the other end to another Rush miss.

An A.J. Abrams miss from three-point range straight away gave Darrell Arthur the chance to score for the second time, inside with a turnaround hook off the glass. He pulled KU back to within one at 17-16. Mario Chalmers was whistled for his second foul after the hoop.

Connor Atchley came down to hit his third three of the game in the corner opposite of his last one, pushing Texas ahead by four once again. Atchley then wiped a Darrell Arthur shot attempt off the glass and set up a three miss from A.J. Abrams. Sherron Collins sped down the floor and floated a lob for Brandon Rush, who laid in his first bucket of the game.

Gary Johnson was fouled underneath leading to another timeout, KU down by two.

15:20, first half, Texas leads 15-12

Texas controlled the game’s opening tip, with Damion James right away taking a feed from Justin Mason and cashing an 18-foot jumper.

KU’s answer after exhausting much of the shot clock against strong perimeter defense was a Mario Chalmers lob up high for Darrell Arthur, which was slammed home with two hands. Connor Atchley came back to cash a corner three for Texas, making it 5-2 early.

Russell Robinson missed a three for the Jayhawks, and off a backdoor feed on the other end, D.J. Augustin was fouled by Darrell Arthur and got to the line, where he hit both charities.

Mario Chalmers on the other end was then the first Jayhawk to truly penetrate the paint, flipping in a layup and drawing contact. He hit the free throw to pull KU within two, but A.J. Abrams answered back with a mid-range jumper.

A travel call against Darnell Jackson turned into a Damion James miss on the other end, James then was called for a foul against Jackson - his second - at the 16:44 mark, sending Jackson to the line. The KU senior hit both free throw attempts.

Abrams answered two more KU tallies with his first three of the game from the corner in front of the KU bench. Russell Robinson then answered back with a trey of his own, keeping KU close at 12-10.

Connor Atchley’s second three of the game was the result of Texas’ next trip up the floor, but KU came back to again silence the crowd with Sasha Kaun tossing a lob to Darnell Jackson. A foul on KU sent the game into its first full break with Texas up three.

Pregame

AUSTIN, Texas - One down, one to go. That's the way it is right now for No. 3 Kansas University, who faces its second major backcourt challenge in a three-day stretch tonight in Austin, Texas, against the No. 11 Longhorns.

Texas (19-4 overall, 6-2 Big 12) is coming off a 71-65 overtime win Saturday on the road over Iowa State. The effort was paced by junior guard A.J. Abrams' 25 points, including seven three-pointers. Abrams, who averaged 18.5 points per contest in two meetings with the Jayhawks in 2006-07, leads the 'Horns with 72 treys made. He's averaging 17.9 points per game this season, which is second on the team to sophomore D.J. Augustin, putting away 19.7 points and 5.4 assists a night. Augustin was the Big 12 preseason Player of the Year.

KU defensively wants to atone for allowing 90 points to Baylor in a 10-point win in Allen Fieldhouse Saturday night which looked more like a track meet at times than a basketball game. Baylor's backcourt went nuts offensively, with Curtis Jerrells scoring 30 points, LaceDarius Dunn 25 and Henry Dugat 15. KU was able to combat it with consistency, with Darrell Arthur scoring 23 efficient points for the Jayhawks, Russell Robinson notching 22 on 14-of-15 free throw shooting and Sherron Collins exploding after halftime to finish off a 17-point, four-assist showing.

The x-factor for Texas may in fact beits big men. Sophomore Damion James is one of the league's most improved players. After averaging 7.6 points and 7.2 boards a game as a freshman, those numbers are up to 12.7 and 10.6 a game this year, respectively. He's also hit 17 three-point looks this year after converting just one as a frosh. The team's most accurate deep marksman is fellow forward Connor Atchley, who is a 49.1 percent three-point shooter, yet leads the team in blocked shots with 42.

Tonight's game tips at 8 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN and ESPNHD (Sunflower channels 33 and 233).

Looks like critical defensive matchups at several positions. I guess if one of their bigs is on the perimeter shooting 3s, that takes him out of the paint--hopefully we can rebound the ball aggressively. Sounds also like at least 4 3pt-shooters and aggressive A-rated guards. Another good challenge.

the big 12 has been way better than last year, this game looks to be a serious challenge! I can't wait, this is what it is all about for me, these mid-season big-time games

One of the few things that sucks about playing the 8pm game on Big Monday. At least it's not going into OT.

And actually, the refs are doing a very impartial job for a change of pace.

Posted by jross1972 (Johann Ross) on February 11, 2008 at 8:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

They were late cutting to the game from Georgetown...

but Ive been keeping track from that point. Texas is 60% when 3s are uncontested (3/5) and 33% when 3s are contested (1/3--including one block).

Not liking the ref's. Everytime their guards drive they push off and somehow it's a foul on us. Crazy!

It would appear we're taking control of this game.

i don't think KU has a good history with curtis shaw...but I could be confusing him with another ref.

But the threes aren't falling as frequently as they were. The misses mean more potential rebounds for us.

unofficial 3 point stats first half (excluding the first several minutes)....

Incidentally, Coach Self tells Holly Rowe "We didnt defend the three at all." Reece Davis is talking about the "Face up five" Connor Atchley...

4/8 from three when 3s are uncontested

1/4 from three when 3s are contested

80% of their made threes come when shots are completely uncontested.

Defense?

8 uncontested three pointers when you have Abrams, Augustine, and Atchley on the floor?

Defense?

And Im sure Texas made at least one three prior to when I started keeping track...

18 of their 38 points--over HALF--at halftime come from threes.

PERIMETER DEFENSE!!!!

Overall a solid half of basketball on both ends of the court. I really like our focus and intensity out of the gate...something that was lacking against KState/Baylor. I also like the way our bigs are playing and how D-Block and Shady continue to get into excellent position for layups, 2nd shots, and rebounds. Anyone keeping track of the differential on points in the paint?

My only complaint so far is the perimeter D and that was most flawed early on. Somebody PLEASE get a body on Atchley and let's hope this kid doesn't stay unconscious in the 2nd half. On the other hand we have contained Augustin really well.

to this point, the ratio of uncontested threes to contested threes is 10:3. Theyre getting open shots on the perimeter.

6 fouls to 1... Sweet!

Everyone is always so quick to compliment our guards, especially on the defensive end. Personally, I think they have lost a step or two. Every Big 12 guard the last month have driven past them and gotten our guards and bigs in foul trouble.

Realistically if we don't beat Texas, who have we beaten this year? No one. I've been on the bandwagon all year, but I'm about to hop off. The way this team has been playing the last month there is NO way they make it to the Final four, let alone win it all.

Crimson whats sad is your exactly right.... The 1 thing that is killing us more than anything else is the fact that our guards are slow on defense.

It looks like we could stick just about anyone out there, and they could just drive right past our guards.... That puts everyone on the team in foul trouble, and gives too many free outlets to our opponents.

ref's=terrible.

Posted by NH_JHawk (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 9:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Please step back off the ledge fellas. I can't believe you're ready to abandon your team because we've won every game but 1 this last month. I know I know...nothing short of being undefeated is mediocrity right? It's pretty lame actually. You do realize that it's statistically almost impossible to win a championship don't you?

Posted by kushaw (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 9:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

what does it take for us to get to the free throw line.

Posted by kushaw (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 9:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

NHHawk: What are you talking about? I don't think anyone is about to jump off the ledge. We're commenting as the game is in progress and if you haven't noticed, there is definitely some ugly play and some really bad no calls that are being slipped.

Posted by jhwkfan162515 (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 9:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

An impartial officiating crew would be nice, kushaw. I wonder how much money Rick Barnes and company slipped under the table at halftime to the refs...?

A change in officiating is what it will take.

Posted by jross1972 (Johann Ross) on February 11, 2008 at 9:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Kansas is giving up less three attempts as the game goes on! Thats a good sign. Perimeter D is picking up. WE LOOK LIKE WE'VE BEEN PLAYING FOR THE WHOLE GAME, WITHOUT A FIRST HALF LET DOWN. That another good thing.

But we HAVE to get a big win. We have to prove to ourselves we can win the big game. Cant drop two to KSU and Texas and question our ability...

Cant do it.

We need the win.

Posted by kushaw (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 9:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I wish Bill would give those refs an ear full. Sometimes it's okay in my opinon to get a technical and I think a couple of minutes ago would have been the perfect opportunity.

You have no idea about my KU allegiance. So don't question it. I'm just tired of KU getting so much hype year in and year out - building expectations to monumental levels and then it crashing down on us EVERY year. We haven't won a title in 20 years...

With the talent we have had the last 4 years there is NO reason we shouldn't make at least ONE Final Four!

After all that: Rock Chalk forever!

this second half was doomed when we got a call for a back door pick with 12 seconds to go in the second half. I hate it when refs dictate outcomes.

We keep going to the paint but no calls. They could be forcing it instead of taking what is available.

GOOD...

The first half was not flat.

Kansas shut down the three and perimeter defense picked up in the second half.

We played the whole game (except for 5 minutes in the second half).

BAD...

We cant win the big game.

well, get ready for another 2 or 3 and done March.

Wow!! Am I pissed...outplayed and outcoached in 2nd half!!
No sense of urgency or need to call a timeout to stem the tide of momentum. Nobody ran the offense and the coach didn't seem to care. When the hell are they gonna realize that you can't continue to play pick-up ball against this level of competition?

Posted by Chicago_JHawk (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't understand how we consistently lack the desire to win big games. Embarrassing second half display on the glass. And why isn't Sherron on the floor for that last possession??

When is Self gonna grow a set of nuts and start complaining about some calls? No wonder we always get shafted, officials are taking an ear full from the other side, and Bill just kicks back and gives a smirk. Gee, thats intimidating....

Not that we should have won anyway, we played lazy in the second half... Such a disappointment.

Posted by kushaw (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Agree Jross: We can't win the big game. Take this for note though.
I just looked at the unofficial box score.

24 fouls-KU
15 fouls-UT

19-26 FT for UT
11-14 for KU.

That tells me some information right there.

Posted by landon_2003 (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

texas has a weak ass front court...so why not throw it down low everytime instead of using the pick and roll every play and chucking up contested threes. o well....sure we will drop about 5 spots now. good job ku, you suck at winning games that count.

Posted by Chicago_JHawk (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Outplayed so badly, and we have a shot to tie at the end...our talent kept it close. Pair that talent with some heart and we win these games.

Can't win the big game - so EVERY game this year except UT and K-State wasn't "big"?

Stupid comment

Posted by kushaw (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh wait: It's Official

It gets even better. UT was 20-28 from the free throw line. Even freakin better. You're telling me that UT gets 14 more free throws than us. Yeah right.

8 out of first 16 three-pointers by Texas,
And they out-rebounded us in 2nd half
Home court advantage
Give them a cookie

we settled for too many jumpers and 3s
instead of taking it inside
Where was our dribble penetration?
Our size advantage?
The post game?
The reason you're not in the NBA already?...

yea but are the fouls bad refs, or our guys being out of position? d*mn i wanted to win this game to show we can beat a quality team on the road. doesn't bode well for the dance, yet again.

Posted by lance1jhawk (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

We played to whatever Texas wanted to do in the second half. We quit running, rebounding and guarding. Whatever Bill said to them at half time should never be said again. That was PATHETIC!!!

Posted by Theutus (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

kushaw, that does tell us a lot, but how about Self actually raise hell for once.

Posted by KU (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm beginning to think that not having a "go to guy" is not a good thing. We don't have somebody that will put the team on his shoulders. We haven't since Wayne Simeon. Too many soldiers and not one general. You've got to know who your guy is. We have too much balance, in my opinion. You need a Danny Manning. You need a Michael Beasley. You need a Psycho T to win championships. Maybe we have too many McDonalds All-Americans and not enough role players. As it is, we have ALL role players because nobody is THE man.

Arthur thought he wanted to be 'the man' tonight but he started throwing up perimeter shots instead of staying in the lane and blocking out and rebounding.

Posted by kushaw (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Truthhurts: You should take your name to hear. The truth is that not every game is a big game. So far K-State and Texas has been our two biggest games in confernce and pretty much this season and we lost both emotional games.

Posted by landon_2003 (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

he should just get a T and try to fire the team up. why not do what roy used to do...pull five and put 5 walk ons on the floor for a bit to get those starters pissed off. worked then should work again.

KU - remind me how many championships Psycho T has won (or even Final Fours)?

Posted by Theutus (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Our entire team stopped rebounding in the second half, not just Arthur. At one point I saw 3 KU bigs down low, all standing watching a rebound come down and a single texas player went up and got it in the center of all of them....

Jump much?

This isn't the year, fellas. Immaturity. They don't understand how to play close games. They don't understand how to control a game when they have a small lead. They don't block out. They don't get good shots when the game is close

I think Self is a great coach, but I think he's the wrong coach for this team...

We have a ton of talent, and they all get beat and just shrug it off like they don't care... I see no emotion at all when they consistently get beat, and I see no emotion from Self either when they come to the bench....

How about tearing into someone and firing them up? It doesn't have to be coach knight, but jesus christ, no wonder our team takes these losses and looks like they have no fire under their asses.

landon.......What don't you understand about championship basketball? This team doesn't understand anything about it, either, apparently! They don't understand how to play close games on the road. You'd think they would have learned something from the K-State game. Immature. No leadership. Impatient on offense. Poor lock-down defense. Poor block-outs.

These guys won't win the Big 12 tournament. They will be lucky to win the 2nd game of the NCAA tourney.

We only scored 27 points in the second half! We should have had this game in the 90's and buried the shorthorns. We played the game that they gave us instead of taking what we wanted. That is what seperates championship teams from elite 8 teams.

KU loses at OSU and ISU... if not both, one for sure.....
And we are surely ganna lose at A&M cuz they got big men. we wont even have points in paint.

So out of 3 road games... we have 2 lose written all over us.

Thanks Kansas for showing me some hopes for NC till half season. I'll be buying my sweet 16 shirt again this year.

Who said this was the best team Kansas ever had??

Posted by Theutus (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm getting more and more angry about the officials after thinking about it....

A majority of Texas's points came from outside the paint, a majority of ours came from down low, but they still got twice the freebies as we did? How the hell does that work out.

Posted by landon_2003 (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

everytime augustin drove they called a foul...that's how they won.

Posted by NH_JHawk (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Perspective:

We got beat by a highly ranked Texas team playing at home. A team that beat UCLA, Tennessee, and St. Marys. How they lost to Mizzou and almost to ISU I'll never get it. Give Texas all the credit. Hard to believe but they are a better team than last year. Imagine if Durant was still there....scary!

We need to tighten up our perimeter D and work on coming out BOTH halfs with intensity. Poor start to the 2nd half tonight.

Another off night from 3pt shooting. 4 of 17. Poor 2nd half rebounding the basketball as well, especially after a +10 rebounding differential in the 1st half.

Fact is guys, we've now lost 2 and it's ok. Both losses are to RANKED teams and AWAY from home. Can UCLA say that? Can UNC say that? Can Tennessee say that? We're going to be ok.

Posted by KU (anonymous) on February 11, 2008 at 10:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Damion James actually being in the GAME in the 2nd half was the reason we couldn't own the paint in the 2nd half.

These guys are about the 3rd or 4th team on the 2 line in the NCAA tourney. And at that, they are probably overrated.

i agree nh jhawk...our two losses are on the road to RANKED teams. sucks we lost but they are good losses unlike unc and ucla. we'll be fine.....still alot of time left to tweak before the tourney.

Why did UT get the calls? Because we FOULED THEM instead of playing sound defense! Don't blame the refs. I don't think they called that bad of game.

Who was gullible enough to believe this was the best team Kansas ever had? If so, Id love to hear why?

Things to work on for next game. I actually think our guards did a good job on their smaller quicker guards. That does sound like an oxymoron since we do have pretty small guards, but UT is exceptionally small. I think KU did a decent job, but the rotation was terrible in picking up the weak side because it allowed for dribble and kicks (for 3's) and dribble and kicks with a cutting man. UT did the exact opposite of the first half which I thought was good coaching on Barnes part. While we were drawing up a plan to stop the 3, Barnes instituted the guys to cut to the basket on dribble penetration. Pretty good plan!
I also think Danny and Saaaaaassssshhhhaaaa Kaun need to work on that right shoulder drop step. Go to your right man. You made 3 shots more difficult than they needed to because you're going further away to your right then just a little dump in with the left.
Bill, if you ever get in this situation again you better stick up for your team. I think you let your team down tonight by not beraiding those refs. Refs don't lose games, but you can dictate how those refs make calls. Refs don't want the stoplight on their games, but if you make it the spotlight than people will notice and they'll change their actions. Just my thoughts.
