It’s incredible what $31 million, 80,000 square feet and a 12-1 Orange Bowl championship season can bring a football program.

Specifically, for this year’s Kansas University football team, such currency delivered the state-of-the-art Anderson Family Football Complex that the Jayhawks now call home.

Gone are the annoying bus trips across campus from the old locker room to the stadium. The outdated, overcrowded meeting rooms, film rooms and training rooms the Jayhawks used to make do with have been traded in for newer, more spacious, more triumphant quarters.

The facility, situated at the southwest corner of Memorial Stadium, is a constant reminder of the heights the KU program has reached. It’s something that is not lost on the student-athletes who frequent the new digs.

“It’s definitely a reminder of what we’ve accomplished,” senior linebacker Joe Mortensen said. “And I’m so glad, being a senior, that I got to experience it.”

From the sound of things, Mortensen has experienced the complex more than just about anyone on the team. An informal survey of a dozen or so Jayhawks made available at a recent media session revealed that.

“Every time I go down there, I see him in there doing something,” defensive lineman Caleb Blakesley said of the senior linebacker.

Senior offensive lineman Adrian Mayes also was quick to pick Mortensen as the one player who calls the complex home.

“I think Joe Mortensen spends the most time in there for sure,” Mayes said. “He doesn’t have a car, so he’s always walking everywhere and showing up way too early. It’s been pretty special to have a facility like that. It’s real nice.”

Mayes, who admitted he spends a minimum of two hours a day at the new facility, said his favorite room in the building was the hydro-therapy room.

“There’s a hot tub and a cold tub in there,” he said. “That’s some good stuff.”

Mortensen, meanwhile, has two pretty good reasons for logging so many hours in the new complex.

“My favorite room is probably the weight room. I’m a weight-room fanatic,” Mortensen said. “Other than that, I’d have to say the players’ lounge. In the players’ lounge, we’ve got flat screen TVs, X-Box, Playstation 3 and all that stuff. We’ve even got an arcade in there, and we play Street Fighter and go old school.”

The players’ lounge seems to be far and away the most popular room in the entire joint, and that’s largely because of the freedom it offers.

“It’s away from the coaches and away from everybody else, and it’s just the players,” sophomore wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe said. “It’s just a cool place to chill.”

Defensive lineman Russell Brorsen said Briscoe’s assessment of the lounge was right on the money.

“That’s really what it is,” Brorsen said. “It’s just a place you can go if you have some extra time It’s always open. The whole facility’s always open if you have the code. You can go in there at 3 a.m. if you can’t sleep, or you can go in there just to watch TV. Nothing bad ever happens there.”

Of course, it’s not all fun and games in the new facility. A fair amount of actual work gets done there, as well. And, for some players, like red-shirt freshman offensive lineman Jeff Spikes, it’s having the room to work that he appreciates most about the Anderson Family Football Complex.

“It sounds cheesy, but I would say the offensive line room,” said Spikes, asked his favorite spot. “You can get yelled at, but there are so many people there, you can’t get torn into too bad. All the film work, all of the different things we need to go over, all of our plays … we build a lot of plays in there. It’s just like a learning center. Every time I go in there, it’s a chance to get better.”

Spikes was one of the few Jayhawks who went a different route when naming the player that gets the most face time on the complex’s security cameras. He chose Mayes.

“Adrian Mayes spends his whole day there,” Spikes said. “He has nothing else to do, and he loves the game of football.”

Senior wide receiver Dexton Fields went with the oft-injured Kerry Meier.

“Probably Kerry Meier, because he’s been in the training room all year, working hard trying to get himself ready to play,” Fields said.

And Mortensen, the man who tried to beat strength coach Chris Dawson into the facility by showing up at 4 a.m. a couple of times, voted for linebacker Justin Springer.

“I’m up there a lot,” Mortensen said. “But I’d definitely have to say Justin Springer. He’s a weight-room fanatic like me, but he takes it to another level. I guarantee he sleeps in there. I see him sleeping in the players’ lounge all the time.”

No matter where the room or what the reason, the 2008 Jayhawks have adapted to their new off-the-field home with ease.

“We have great people in there, all of the coaches, our strength staff, our trainers. It’s a fun place to be,” Mortensen said. “If you’re bored, you can go in there and just talk to someone. Or you can jump in the cold tub and see how long you can hold your breath. I’ve got the record, I’m a minute-15. I don’t know how cold the water is, it’s like 48 degrees or something like that. I think someone, I think James Holt, got 50-something seconds. I’m owning everybody.”

It is an amazing facility. I heard national recruiting gurus say it puts KU in the Top 10 in football-only facilities in the nation. Thanks again, Anderson Family!

Nice Facility. Should help with recruiting to boot. Now to continue on a point that was touched on a few days ago, that I don't think any of us can fully grasp yet. Next year's (2009-2010) team...Think about next year's starting 5 at the beginning of March Madness: wow. This is a killer NBA team. Imagine 6'11" Aldrich (very seasoned by this point), 7 foot Withey (seasoned after a year+ of KU practices and 3 months of games), 6'9" M.Morris (ready for primetime, used outside). Sherron Collins gets a starting spot, whether it's at point guard or not it's hard to forsee. The last starting spot on a power team like this would be up for grabs, depending on who is acquired also. Could be Taylor. Could be Little. This looks like a team that could easily win the whole thing next year and send 5 more off to the NBA.Three starters seems certain: Aldrich, Withey, Collins...

Really 100!?!?!!? I don't think anyone truly grasped that yet. Arguably one of the stupidest posts I have ever seen on here. I realize this will never be a football school but, I think KU can make a serious dent in the national picture year in and year out with continued support of us fans, donors, and the university. I cannot wait for New Year's Eve in Tempe......

Speaking of next year...Reesing, Meyers, Sharp, and Briscoe are all back. They are the core of the "skill" postions for our offense. KU will also have the same weaker Big 12 schedule as we had in the 07-08 season. The stars are all alighned for another super season. Perhpas KU can take down the Big 12 North title, and perhaps more.I am very excited.

Quigley, give it a year or two. Besides, Mangino has found diamonds in the rough all throughout his time at KU, perhaps those prima donnas don't fit into his "team first" concept. As for Fihsch, we will have Kerry Meyer (not Meyers) back next year along with all the usual suspects, including a much improved and experienced O-Line. What we won't have however is the soft schedule that we went 11-0 on. We will still be playing the Big 12 South, though this time we will have road games in Austin and Lubbock, with OU in Lawrence. This will make our North games that much more important, as we could be the frontrunner to play in the Big 12 Title game since Iowa St. will be in a rebuilding year with a new HC. Missouri will be in a down year without the 3 Chases (2 QBs and TE) and possibly Maclin. Colorado will be a tough game, and Nebraska will be in Lawrence, making it a winnable game and K-State should be the usual beating we inflict. I haven't looked at non-con too much yet, but we could have another great season and make another big bowl game.RCJ

DPU - Agreed for the most part. Fihsch seems to be unaware that the non-division opponents are on a 2 year rotation. we play the same teams next year but switch the locations. It isn't until 2010 that the S-div opponents change. The part of your post that I'm questioning is that the O-line will be more experienced. It's possible, but definitely not a given. We lose the 3 players in the middle. It sounds like we upgrade thoe 3 with non-freshmen, but I've also heard that all but one position will be new (1 of the OT's changes position?).Definitely agreed on the "give it a few years" position. Similar comments were made when last year's team was doing so well and the stadium wasn't filled. This year it was. Ironically, this year when it filled, people started talking like we needed to lower the field and install new seats immediately. The facilities are just geting finished, and we are still real young in developing a winning FB program. The good news is that the O should be at least as good as this year as last year, and potentially a lot better if everyone returns and plays healthy. If the 3 LB's are replaced as successfully this time as last time, the D should be much improved as well. Hopefully, we'll have the depth to develop the 2010 skill players (QB) during the easy games next year.

I'd have to question the idea that we don't have any top notch recruits signing. Opurum just signed with us and he had offers from: Nebraska, Notre Dame, Purdue, Texas Tech, Arkansas, and Florida. Not a bad group of schools to beat for a recruit if you ask me.Furthermore, in the past we have gotten a bunch of 3 star recruits, but almost never a ranked three star. Nearly all of the 3 star recruits that we've snagged this year have been ranked, and had many other good offers. I see a ton of guys in this recruiting class that we simply wouldn't have been able to pick up in years past. Even if it's a small increase in the talent level, it could pay big dividends for the future of the program.I just don't see any good reason to trash the guys that have signed with us. There are a ton of great players now on their way to Lawrence and I find it disgraceful that you wouldn't be happy to have them as Jayhawks and welcome them to the family. I trust our coaches to know who is talented enough to make our team a contender.

JBurtin- Great post and I couldn't have said it better myself. Coach Mangino is a genius at recruiting. I think alot of people who are unfamiliar with the program i.e. 100 and others expect to see giant headlines across the web site about every football recruit and that just does not happen. Therefore they think KU is not getting any grade A talent, which you and I know is not the case. Rock Chalk Jayhawk and Kick a$$ in Tempe

100....................................This a football story, not a basketball story. This has next to nothing to do with basketball. Please get with the program and read the story completely PRIOR to posting. Then again, you could possibly be a mu or ksu fan who has no idea what a quality facility or team is for any SPORT due to the fact that mu and ksu have no idea what SPORTS are.
