Arizona takes down Jayhawks

No need for overtime this year, as Arizona beats KU 84-67.

— Visions of sugar plums and a nice road victory over Arizona danced in the heads of Kansas University’s basketball players early in the second half of Tuesday’s Fiesta Bowl Classic contest at McKale Center.

But KU’s impressive nine-point lead a minute into the final session disappeared as quickly as Santa’s sleigh over the horizon. U of A outscored the Jayhawks by 20 in the second half of an 84-67 nonconference blowout.

“This puts a huge damper on the holiday,” said KU junior guard Sherron Collins, as amazed as anybody that the Jayhawks (8-3) could — and did — get outscored, 29-6, in a short span that turned a 44-35 lead into a 64-50 deficit.

“It’s still going to feel good to go home to see my family. Obviously, I wanted to go home with a win,” Collins added, noting, “They wanted it more than we did. We’re not going to win a game like that until we get tougher. Coach has been preaching it all year. We’re not tough enough yet. When we get back (from three-day break), practices will be longer, harder until he gets his point across.”

KU’s pre-Christmas Eve lump of coal appeared on a night the Jayhawks — thanks to the defensive work of Brady Morningstar — held Arizona junior standout Chase Budinger to just five points off 1-of-9 shooting.

Budinger, who was one point off a career low, missed four shots and didn’t score the first half as KU took a 38-35 lead into the break.

“I just tried to put a hand up every time he shot it,” said Morningstar, a player coach Bill Self said, “played great.”

“You can’t stop one player and expect to win the game,” Morningstar added. “We didn’t play defense like Kansas.”

Jordan Hill ruled inside for 23 points off 11-of-23 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds. He and Kyle Fogg (14 points) had seven points apiece, while Nic Wise had eight in the 29-6 surge.

Jamelle Horne contributed 19 points off 7-of-13 shooting and had 13 boards on a night the Wildcats (8-3) outboarded KU, 40-29.

“They manhandled us on the glass,” Self said. “We were up by nine (44-35 a minute into the half). We didn’t have control of the game. We made so many poor decisions defensively. We were really bad defensively the second half. We got behind and started pressing.”

One difference in the halves was that the Morris twins combined for 17 first-half points and 10 rebounds. Marcus hit for 10 points, while Markieff had seven. Marcus had two points the second half and Markiefff none. They combined for 12 boards, two the second half.

“When Sherron and Cole combine for four of our 38 points the first half, I think those young kids are doing a good job,” Self said. “The second half, Sherron tried. We missed easy shots and didn’t show poise. We had no low-post presence the whole game.”

There’s more.

“You’ve got to give them something to guard. Defensively, we were no resistance,” Self said. “ The key stat of the game,” Self said, “easy baskets, second shots. I guarantee, if you go back and look at the tapes of this one, you will see we gave up about 38 points to those two stats compared to our 10.”

The end result? A loss for the Jayhawks to stomach as they head home for Christmas.

Bah humbug.

“It leaves a real sour taste,” Aldrich said. “There’s not one thing we’re happy with.”

Right now, it's Cole Aldrich. when he decides to play ....and i mean the whole game, then this team will get better. The twins are still learning, but they seem to be learning pretty fast. Tyshawn can play...and Morningstar is like a gym rat....tell him what to do, and he'll do it (or try very hard to do it.)Aldrich had one point in the first half? and we're up 3. then in the 2nd, he does something...but it's worthless. At some point, the light has to go on for this kid. Maybe he's heard and read too much praise from pundits and/or fans? He needs to go back to work.

That was sure one ugly half of basketball. Granted there were plenty of bad calls (no calls especially) and it seemed like every bounce went there way, but we will have to do better than that. Most disappointing to me was the play of Cole: 2-4 fg's, 6-10 from the line, and 4 rebs...Hopefully in the future the twins/releford can pick up for Cole on bad nights, but we're not there yet. I haven't seen a half breakdown yet of TT. Seemed to me he was awesome in the first half but disappeared in the second. I know this is supposed to be Sheron's team but I'd like to see TT take a larger role. Lastly, hats off to Brady!!! Way to show all the doubters on these boards who said all week that Bud would school you (me not being one of them). I still believe this team will get better and use this experience to build off of.Don't give up the faith yet.Rock Chalk!

The good news is that Brady has had back to back games where he shut down the top scorer for the opponent. Sounds like we've got one top notch defender and the others will learn or sit. This team has a lot of potential, I just hope it's more than potential by the start of Big 12 play.Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.

ku out okie balled!Game was lost on the blocks and the glass, where KU's bigs could neither defend nor rebound at all.Self out-coached by Pennell and his 3/4 court press and half court zone.Aldrich utterly outmanned by Jordan Hill. The Twins generated another good combined line score, but they were out-jumped, out-defended, and outglassvacced. And worst of all, their weakness at help-defense for Aldrich ensured a complete collapse of KU's inside game made possible by Aldrich's inability to handle Hill on his own.Collins, Taylor and Morningstar proved inefficient offensively, because none of them had the presense of mind and composure to set up the half court offense at a normal distance from the basket.Taylor was finally painfully exposed as unable to feed the post under pressure.Reed provided no spark off the bench.Releford confirmed again why he hasn't been playing: he can't figure out the offense his team runs and he can't pop the triceratop. He has a long neck and no upper body strength and so he plays shorter than his height and his rebounding is no better than any of our other perimeter players. His defense is not bad, but he really doesn't play D with enough intensity to take us up a notch there either. Morningstar locked down Budinger, but Pennell decided to play through Hill and Horne and outman KU bigs, so Morningstar was really guarding a decoy. Brady's good defensive game was not to be disregarded, but again, UA was playing Okie Ball. UA played through its match up advantages in the paint with a vengeance. Brady's defense may have made Budinger miss some of his shots, but Budinger only took 9 shots. Pennell was determined to reduce this game to Hill and Horne vs Aldrich and the Twins. He succeeded.

Back to UA's press...KU was clearly unprepared for the press. KU never did adapt to UA's press. Though it did not appear a classic John Wooden 2-2-1 press, The Pennell Press--its brilliance deserves its own name--appeared to be either a two-man, match-up, 3/4 court zone press, or a 2-1-2 version. I could not tell. It was a stroke of strategic genius and tactical beauty, whatever it was. It was not geared to create turn-overs, though it created a few. Instead, it was geared to slow KU down, force its reactors (Collins and especially Taylor) to become thinkers, and sucker KU into setting up its offense over 25 feet from the basket every time down the floor. It worked every time and the KU coaching staff never came up with an effective counter strategy, or at least one that worked. Frankly, KU's Collins and Taylor, and apparently Self, too, fell for the ploy hook, line and sinker. The cascade effect of The Pennell Press was to draw KU's bigs away from the basket and thus neutralize the basic dynamic of KU's game--strong inside scoring within 10 feet of the basket with offensive threats outside to keep the defense from sagging. The ONLY inside scoring KU could get was on a few drive and dishes. KU's players could not get any rebounds, or stick backs. They could never get in control of a single square inch of the paint for even a minute. But bottom line, Taylor and Collins and Morningstar were so preoccupied with trying to get the ball up court the second half that they never could get it to normal start up points in half court and KU's zone offense never could generate anything but long shots. The combo of the press and the zone completely wrecked KU's game. It was awful to watch as a KU fan, but it was basketball strategy at its best.

jaybate (anonymous) says...

Now, about the UA half court zone. KU has handled zones before this year pretty well, but they couldn't deal with UA's zone in the half court. Why?First, as already indicated, KU was rattled by the zone press.Second, the other teams that have zoned KU did not have the 6'8" Budhinger on Morningstar's wing. Budhinger could take away most of the 6'3" Morningstar's trey looks, and harry the ones he attempted. Without Morningstar as a credible three point threat on one wing, UA could bitch slap our bigs with impunity in the paint. In turn, the game turned into a Sherron and Tyshawn three point shooting contest that went okay for awhile until the UA press had them getting their looks from 30 feet away. And of course the Twins finally had to be seated in the second half, because they couldn't keep from being shoved out into the cheap seats. No pair of KU bigs I can ever remember were so physically weak that they could not even get into the paint! The Twins finally experienced what it is like to play serious D1 competition--this was a MUCH better team inside than Syracuse--and though they had another excellent combined line score of 19/12, it was deceptive. They were able to do this because UA focused help on shutting down Aldrich, which they did. For the Twins to have really done their duties under these circumstances, they would have had to have scored a combined 25 to make up for Cole being shut down. But when all is said and done, the lens has to focus on Cole's measly 2 assists. When an opponent has decided to take Cole out of the game as much as UA tried to do, Cole HAS to compensate by passing the ball to the Twins. If he can't score on Hill, he has to become a passer. This kind of game was good for Cole, because now he knows he has to become passer out of the post, not just a guy who moves the ball to the next person. Cole has to learn to hand out assists when he can't get to the rim against an excellent player like Hill.Post Script: I wouldn't be surprised to see Self add The Pennell Press to KU's defensive quiver. That was the most exciting new wrinkle in defense by a KU opponent since the Howland Hack'n'Slap took us out of the game two years ago in the Madness. Self picked up on that right away. There's no reason in the world KU can't pick up on this one too. Collins and Taylor could play it beautifully. And more often than not, Cole would be a very good anchor defender. Post Post Script: I think the jury is in on The Twins jumping. They just don't have very good springs. This means they are going to have to add a lot of weight and get into the pushing and shoving game of traditional horizontal big men.

But if you just play your game, you render that guy's performance useless, ala Kevin Durant.“You can’t stop one player and expect to win the game,” Morningstar added. “We didn’t play defense like Kansas.”That's it, that's all.

Or maybe he just had a bad game against a good player in Hill. If so thats fine, learn from what happened and get ready for the next game and get back to being the J-Hawk Beast. But just to be safe, someone check Coles shoes and make sure there is no added weight in them.

This one was very painful to watch, and pushed me to grudingly conclude that this KU team is not very good - after 11 games played. We can keep talking about the 'youth' of this team, but that is too easily becoming an excuse for lack of progress by too many on this team, a lack of consistent intensity, and a lack of mental toughness. Aldrich was an embarrassement last night; he was thoroughly worked over by Hill, who made it look easy. KU has no rebounding. They seemingly don't know how to block out - how to put a body on the opposition. Morningstar played well; Sherron played well in spots.11 games into the season, with many of the 8 wins against cup cakes, I honestly don't see this team being a lot better than .600 in winning percentage at year end, especially if Mario Little remains out over a long period of time. I watched a bit of the Texas win at Wisconsin last night: KU will be sacrificed at the Longhorn altar if the Jayhawks don't show dramatic improvement. We have no signature wins (no, I don't consider defeating Temple in Allen a signature win), and I don't see getting a few signature wins much of a possibility with this KU edition. I hope we can avoid the NIT.

We can stick with the young and inexperienced excuse until at least mid-February (it's a legitimate claim), but after that we're going to have to be able to show something that we can claim as being good at consistently. Right now, I don't see what part of our game we can lean on during tough strecthes. Our biggest problem is the developement of a power forward. We were really spoiled with the Jackson/Kaun/Arthur rotation down low over recent years. Let's hope the twins can step it up and develop a presence down low...

JaybateThe press is something that U of A's assistant coach Mike Dunlap has run for years and put in this year. It is a 1-1-3 press with many looks in its rotations. Dunlap is a great coach as he has won national titles at the Division 2 level and was an assistant for George Karl last year with the Nuggets. Dunlap is basically running the team as Pennell is mainly a figure head this year. That press is pretty nasty if run correctly, and last night the Wildcats put on a clinic on how to run the 1-1-3.

The press works against KU right now because teams have seen that we only have two legitimate ballhandlers against pressure right now in our regular rotation (Collins, Taylor). They can treat Morningstar and Reed like bigs against pressure, because neither of them really wants to have to handle the basketball in that situation.Because of that, it puts a lot of pressure on Taylor and Collins to facilitate everything when the press is on. With Sherron already feeling the pressure of being our #1 option offensively, pressure is the best way to wear him down further and bog down our offense, since teams know he has to handle the ball against the press. UA's press is pretty good - lots of athletic bodies, etc. - but the key to an effective press is to isolate the ballhandlers. Since KU only has two, that is easy. Last year against a press, we could go small (Robinson, Chalmers, Collins, Rush, Arthur) and break the press with any one of three primary ballhandlers, use Rush as a secondary ballhandler and let Arthur finish. This year we don't have a third handler, so UA exploited us.Now for the good news. I'm pretty confident that we are still NCAA material. Don't everybody go all Chicken Little just yet. However, we probably won't last past the first weekend with the current rotation. We just don't have enough weapons to turn to. Maybe Mario Little changes that, but at this point, I say we get to the tournament, but lose in the second round.

KU (anonymous) says...

jmason......Like you said, it definitely wasn't a 2-2-1 press. They had one kid on the point and the rest was sort of like an "amoeba" they way it morphed. At times it looked like a 1-1-3 and at times it looked like a 1-3-1 because the 2 wings on the back had the freedom to move up and down the sideline. It looked to me like they were dropping back more to a 2-1-2 sometimes in the half-court after KU got it across. One of the defenders on the top of the zone seemed to sort of disguise the look in the half-court by going out above the top of the key when the ball was up top to pressure, making it look more like a 1-3-1 in the half-court.Whatever it was, KU did a very poor job of getting the ball in the middle of it.Who would have believed 4 minutes into the second half that KU would get it handed to them like that? But like Coach said, they weren't ever really in control. It was fool's gold because we got killed on rebounds. How many second shots did we give up??? At least 15 or 20. We would have beaten them if we had blocked out and rebounded on the defensive end. You can't let a team that is efficient offensively get two chances on every possession.

Two main things we need to work on ... when we brake the full court press we had a 3 on 2 most of the time ... The twins are showing signs of greatness .. they are very quick when they want to be ( wish they wanted to be more often )This team is going to take time to develope but the potential is GREAT !!! Collins is trying to do to much at times ( I know we are looking lost but the only way we can learn is by doing ) Collins driving for a throwup shot at the end of the half when we have a wide open 3 from the corner is just doing to much .. Pass it out and let our good shooters have a wide open look at the buzzer. Rock Chalk

@dukehester: Couldn't agree more. This game looked a loss when the schedule was released, and it really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that a team composed mostly of Freshmen and Sophomores played like a deer in the headlights during stretches in their first away game (and at Arizona, to boot). We got sped up, and once they snagged the momentum we didn't know what to do. Instead of stepping up, we fell apart, and that's just inexperience. It might take longer than this season for some of our players to know what to do. That's how it goes, but it's not that the kids aren't trying or busting their azzes. It takes time. Some positives: Brady's play. For me, he's an unexpected win out of this season. He's good now and getting better -- what a jewel for the program. Good kid, hometown hero, legacy player . . . At times our interior passing was slick -- I think as this team grows, we'll slice people open with quick interplay between our bigs. This team will probably be Self's first that doesn't win the Big 12, but if they can be in the picture going into the last few games, it'll be an accomplishment in my book. We'll make the tournament, and while even an elite 8 is probably out of reach, we're going to be the 6-7 seed that nobody wants any piece of. Lighten up, folks, we're still the National Champion Kansas Jayhawks.

I've said this before, and I still think it's true. The team should schedule one away game in the first two weeks of the season (preferably against a "smaller" school) to shake off the jitters that come with playing away from home. All of KU's losses this season have taken place outside of AFH (although two were in nearby KC).KU just was not ready for this trip to Arizona. When the crowd was out of the game, KU was focused. When Arizona shrunk KU's lead and took over, the crowd got louder, and Kansas lost focus. I'm not saying that is the only reason KU lost, but I think it was a big factor.

Jaybate,I don;t disagree that the Pernell Press was the major strategy shift that doomed an inexperienced KU team. Remember in Maui 4 years ago when UA full court pressed a young KU team (chalmers, Rush, etc first game). At one point KU was 35 points down.THe Morris twins are weak and can not jump a lick. They would be an even bigger liability in a zone press. They are slow like molasses and for a zone press to work youi need 4 athletic attackers and one stud (like Aldich to defent the hoop). Collins and Taylor would work in a zone press. Not sure who the two middle men would be? Reed and Morningstar can not be on the court at the same time, so you need one additional middle man. KU needs something to chane the pace of a game and a zone press would be very workable, but I think the twins would have to get in shape for it to work and this will nt happen this year. They are somewhat overgrown HS slugs that got by on their height and not athleticism, strength or quickness. They need a summer of serious strength and quickness training.I wonder why KU did not know this or maybe they have and the twins are much better than in HS????? Twins are aboyut 18 months from maturity both mentally and physically.

I don't totally blame Aldrich's poor play on him alone. The other players need to get him more involved. Granted, he did get schooled by hill last night, but he has proven he is a reliable big down low and he shoots a high percentage shot. He had a bad game last night and I am sure he will learn from it. The only thing that bothers me about the game last night is the fact that U of A went on a huge run on us (29-6) in the second half. That is just ridiculous. I had a feeling (as I am sure many of us did) this team was probably going to get blown out at some point this year, and this was our first road game of the season, but seriously? It appears to me that none of these players care about losing these kinds of games. It appears to me that none of these players give a rats a$$ about the fact that they are blessed with the opportunity to play for the defending national champions and blessed with the opportunity to play basketball at kansas. Kansas doesn't rebuild, they reload. These "reloading" players are not living up to their hype, potential, or ability. When are these kids going to realize they are not in high school anymore?

Okay, can I also mention that the officiating definitely contributed to Arizona's momentum? That Hill kid got away with murder last night. He had offensive and defensive fouls that weren't called, and our boys called called for everything. It was bad enough that Coach Self got into it with the officials a bit. There's no question KU is to blame for that loss, but is frustrating to see such poor officiating.

I know someone will probably comment about my post, so let me say this...I will stick by these players and coaches as long as they are at Kansas. I love KU sports and will always support them. This is going to be a fun/interesting/at times frustrating year for us fans to watch these young Jayhawks play. I am excited to watch these kids grow and develop over time. Rock Chalk Jayhawk Go KU!!!

Loved the first half...hated the second half. U of A did a good job going to players other than Budinger...Morningstar played great but was clearly winded in the 2nd half. KU needs to have others step up when Collins and Aldrich can't.The positives for me were the first half, the twins showing more consistency, players such as Releford getting valuable PT, and another game with tough lessons to learn: playing the whole 40 minutes, playing smarter on defense, rebounding, not losing poise when the other team is on a run, dealing with hostile crowds...I don't think it's just the freshman...our veterans are part of this emerging mix. I do see much potential for this year's crew and I do see the KU streak of NCAA tourney appearances being kept alive. Next year, look out. I'm excited to see them live Tuesday. Happy Holidays!

BleedCandB,You got it right in your first post, less perhaps the comment about the KU players not caring about losing. I believe they do care; they just don't all have the mental toughness and resolve to play thru "down nights" to find a way to win. Not yet anyway.Call it like you see it. Be tough on the team and staff, if you see it that way. This is kansas basketball, and yes, expectations are high....very high. And they should be. For sure, Coach Self does not pussy foot around with the team when he sees poor play and/or lack of intensity.

Jaybate- Their is a reason Chase only took 9 shots, Brady was in his jockstrap all night long! Brady last night put on a clinic on how to play defense. Defense is all about desire and want to (HEART) In the end it didn't make a difference but hopefully it rubbed off on some of the younger players( and maybe Cole too) so it makes us a tougher team down the road! great job brady!!!!

Thanks jaybate. I hope other teams don't see the middle problem as clearly as you do. Of course, they will. I did think the referees didn't blow the whistle enough against Arizona, but you have to accept that and play over it. Anyway, thanks.

It is Christmas Eve, 2008, and I am still optimistic about this team.dukehester asks: "Is jaybate ever positive in outlook other than when we blow some team out?"Answer: Yes.Additional Comment: I am endlessly amazed that persons interpret analysis of what went wrong in a loss, or even a win, as pessimism about a season. Just like players take'em one game at a time, analysis focuses on one game at a time. If one can't take a game apart and think forensically about what went wrong, one can't learn spit from a loss. dukehester, have you never set through tapes of your play? it can be brutal to watch a mistake rerun a hundred times, but learning involves not only learning what you are doing right, but also recognizing what is wrong. I've seen this aversion to analyzing problems in so many fields and it is always an substantial impediment to persons improving both their knowledge and performance. I will say this this one time: it never hurts to analyze what went wrong in a loss, or a win, using plain english. jmason, thanks for the insight about mike dunlap and his 1-1-3. Post links about this zone press if you have them. I have to read and learn about it. FWIW, Pennell sure looked like he was running the show on the bench.mbmerriman, you are always a voice of reason and the short answer is yes, I do remember those horrible moments early in the season 2 and 3 years back. I really do enjoy young teams and their birthing pains just as much as I do the experienced teams struggling to play as experienced as they are. This team could easily get ripped up the next few weeks and still turn it around. With great coaches like Bill Self, you never give up. A team is a complicated apparatus. Players develop nonlinearly. What looks hopeless at one point can suddenly be full of hope two weeks later. But with that being the case, I still have to say the Twins can't jump. :-) I am hoping big time that I am wrong on this; that they're just thinking too much right now, but I doubt it.yates33333,I agree about the refs, but the most athletic team with the best jumpers over the course of the game tends to get the calls. The refs get used to seeing one team always go higher, always arrive sooner, always faking the other team out of its jockstraps, and over the course of the game this builds up an expectation that the more athletic team is just better and less likely to have committed the fouls that are questionable. Last years KU team often got the breaks on calls, because they were quicker and more graceful and better leapers than the teams they played. This year, UA had the goods on us, at least yesterday.
