Vitale’s got the right idea

When Dick Vitale recently handed me a signed copy of the book he wrote with Dick “Hoops” Weiss of the New York Daily News, I thanked him and told myself I only would read it if he listed former Bradley University great Hersey Hawkins among college basketball’s top 50 players since Vitale started screaming into a microphone during college basketball games in 1979.

Sure enough, there Hawkins was, listed at No. 38, too low for my taste, but at least not overlooked.

Hawkins, a 6-foot-3 center at Westinghouse High in Chicago, was overlooked by college basketball heavyweights, but Bradley coach Dick Versace offered him a scholarship after coming away from a private practice in which Hawkins played guard for two hours.

Hawkins gave the greatest college basketball performance I’ve ever witnessed live on Dec. 19, 1987. Covering the Cal-Irvine Anteaters, I watched Hawkins trigger a frightful gasp from the Peoria crowd when he was whistled for his third foul with 9:45 left in the first half, by which time he had scored 23 points. Hawkins sat out the rest of the first half and still managed to torch UCI for 51 points in a 139-119 victory for the Braves. The Anteaters’ volunteer assistant in charge of defense, former Bob Knight assistant Andy Andreas, quit after the game. Bradley coach Stan Albeck had Hawkins running figure 8s around screens all night long. He would catch it, shoot it, score it.

Later that season, Hawkins lit up Detroit, long after Vitale coached at the school, for 63 points. During his four-year career at Bradley, Hawkins scored 30 or more points 37 times.

The book, “Dick Vitale’s Fabulous 50 Players & Moments in College Basketball” ranks Danny Manning as the fifth-greatest player during Vitale’s time behind the mike. Vitale ranked Georgetown’s Patrick Ewing, Duke’s Christian Laettner, Virginia’s Ralph Sampson and North Carolina’s Michael Jordan ahead of Manning.

Vitale’s rules for selection rock, baby. They’re super fantabulous. No wonder the guy’s a PTA, prime-time announcer.

First, players’ NBA careers weren’t considered. Consistency, the ability to make teammates’ better and being crucial to the team’s success all were nice rules, but none were better than rule No. 4 of five: “Players that were one and done were not eligible for consideration.”

The one-and-done rule works for the NBA in one sense. It gives the league a year of free marketing for the next year’s leading Rookie of the Year candidates. It doesn’t work for college basketball in any way.

If the NBA ever went to Major League Baseball’s rule, both college basketball and the NBA would be better games. Let players declare themselves eligible for the NBA draft right out of high school, but if they decide to go to college, they can’t enter the NBA until three college seasons have passed.

You have to love Vitale for urging players to stay longer in college, especially those who are deluding themselves. After all, if Mario Chalmers had bolted after his sophomore season, his three-point shot against Memphis wouldn’t be ranked as the seventh-greatest moment. And if Manning hadn’t played four years, the miracle he pulled off with the Miracles wouldn’t have ranked 13th.

Vitale a fabulous, prime time announcer? You've surely got to joking, Tom. Vitale is a moron, a clown of the hardwoods, a super marketer for UNC, Duke, and the ACC. And boring to boot. The guy is hype, a distraction to the game on TV, and ego centric, thinking himself god of college basketball insight and knowledge. He was a complete failure as a basketball coach.Ralph Sampson and Christian Laettner better than Manning? Can't possibly be so. But I would surely expect such to be Vitale's view, as both are ACC players. Sampson was a huge disappointment in college - he never won a championship. Laettner? He had several All-Americans playing with him, allowing him to play on several championship teams, but he is not better than Manning as a college player. No way. Again, Vitale shows his incredible bias for the ACC, a conference he worships and adores. If you want to acclaim a broadcaster, Tom, for their decorum, basketball knowledge, and even-mindedness behind the broadcast mike, there are many to chose from. Vitale is not one of them. When Vitale is "broadcasing" I have the TV switched to mute.

I disagree. Although he is a bit loud and at times hard to take he has been a great ambassador for the college game. Yes, he does ride the ACC and Big East band wagon, but never has one person brought so much attention to basketball. There are other commentators out there that I would prefer to listen to, but as we near tourney time he brings an excitment and enthusiasm that draws attention to the game we love.

Ralph Sampson was a disappointment as a pro, but he carried Virginia for 3 years. He had no one else around him that sticks out in my mind. Laettner was NOT better than Danny. He had great players all around him and Danny carried the team his last two years. The championship occurred when role players played above their normal capacity and the team really peaked in the last 3 games. Hersey Hawkins was a scoring machine, but did he really make the players around him better? Not like Danny.

You either love Vitale or hate him. I happen to enjoy it when he does the occasional KU game. But I'm also glad he doesn't do EVERY game.Vitale putting Manning at #5 is better than being left off the list of ESPNs Top 25 all time (yes I realize that's all time vs. Vitale time).I agree I'd like to see basketball adopt the baseball rule, but I disagree that the current structure doesn't help college hoops at all. I'd argue that Beasley/Rose/Durant etc have all helped with college hoops visibility and enjoyment and I appreciated the chance to watch them play a year in college.

As annoying and biased as he can be, Vitale is almost personally responsible for college basketball being as popular as it is. He's become increasingly more eccentric over the years, but part of me thinks he's earned it for the service he's done to the sport. Vitale is a purist and wants to see the college game progress and improve despite the NBA's commercialized attempts to weaken it. He deserves the soapbox for this book. Was Laettner a better college player than Danny? Absolutely not and no one will ever convince me otherwise. I nearly choke on my own stomach acid every March when his highlight resurfaces and announcers proclaim his all-around greatness. However, I think you'd be hard pressed to convince any announcer, Vitale, Packer, Bilas, etc. that Danny was the better of the two.

i couldnt disagree with woodhawk more. what makes college bb popular is they play hard, play defense, and dont walk up and down the court like in the pro's. it has absolutely nothin to do with who announces the games. wow, to think someone could be that ignorant and able to type too.

I agree with jayhawkr34,The NBA is boring. Basketball is my favorite sport, but it is nearly impossible for me to watch it. "Oh, I'm just going to stand around until I get the ball and then I'll show how great I am." Boring, and it is destroying the game. College isn't better today then it was 20 years ago because of Vitale. It is better because the NBA is getting worse. My wife doesn't even watch the games with me, but if you ask her about Vitale she will tell you how much of a moron he is. I will say this much about Vitale. He is my second most hated commentator. Bill Walton is #1, but it is close.

I see both sides of the Dick Vitale love/hate thing. I agree he can be annoying sometimes, but his enthusiasm is infectious. And though he does love duke, unc, etc.....he shows lots of love for KU. He's always excited when he comes here and really pumps up the crowd. Most other analysts are dry, it's nice to see someone with some sheer joy and who really loves the game.

For those who are interested, here's a link to Dick Vitale's speech at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Dick is passionate about living life to its fullest and I commend him for that. Love him or hate him, Dick Vitale is an exceptional motivational speaker. He truly enjoys speaking to kids about life and how to excel in it. How many of us can do that?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nws2-zY6yyU

Yea Dicky V may be annoying sometimes, and yea he was a terrible coach. But he found something he IS good at. There is not a better ambassador out there for college basketball. He would do anything for this sport. He is on the board for the Jimmy V foundation and is also very passionate about that. My father was in lawrence at a motel the day before a game that Dicky V was announcing and dad sat down and ate breakfast with him. Said he was a real down to earth guy and offered to send a signed copy of his new book to him (which he had already puchased and read at the time). Sure enough a couple weeks later the book came signed to him with a personal note thanking my dad for eating breakfast with him. He might be a little loud and he might like the ACC a little to much, but this man will do anything to help anything in college baskeball. So all you haters might think past the loud voice.....

I like Vitale, he is great for the game. But yes, he has his weaknesses. Like last year when he was visibly angry at Calipari and Memphis after they blew the title game, and his raging ACC bias. He does brush his teeth with a used Duke toothbrush he got from Grant Hill.Still, he was always better than chloroform-with-a mic Billy Packer. And it's great that he's giving Danny Manning respect, he always seemed to be big fan of his. Also, I agree that Knight is suprisingly good as a color commentator.

"I love Danny, but Laettner was a better college player. I know that is sacreligious for me to say, but look at how many Final Fours the guy went to."This goes back to the ages-old argument about how much a player should be judged by his team's success. Yes, Laettner was an incredible clutch player and had probably the most famous shot in college basketball history (until maybe Mario's this year). But he also had an incredible supporting cast -- far better than the one that Danny had (except maybe for Danny's freshman year, and that team made the Final Four). So I think it's pretty short-sighted to say that Laettner was a better player simply because he went to more Final Fours.

No Keegan, that's a bad Keegan! Vitale reminds me of everything that I hate about Lee Corso... an old man who doesn't know squat about the game, has a west coast bias, distracts people from the game with his shenanigans and thinks himself to be bigger than the game. Ridiculous.

Hersey Hawkins was incredible at Bradley, that's for sure. Too bad he and Danny couldn't get us the gold in Seoul. I think Hawkins hurt his ankle and we were stuck without a 3-point threat since coach Thompson didn't bother keeping Rex Chapman. Big mistake.Manning did go to two Final 4s - not bad.Lee Corso is no Dick Vitale. Corso is in his own moronic Galaxy in which he is the sun, shining rays of idiocy with every word. He is the most arrogant idiot in the universe. Remember that rant he went on when the Dallas DJ made a joke about him posing nude? He was so arrogant he actually thought the guy was serious, as if anyone would want to see him naked. I'm sick thinking about it...

I agree, Strikewso. Although I've gotten tired of Vitale's shtick and I would rather not watch a game that he's announcing, there is no comparison, and it's a real insult to Vitale to compare him to Corso. On an interesting side note, a number of years ago, before Corso had become as well known as he is today, I met someone who had played for him at Indiana. I asked the guy what Corso was like to play for, and he said that everyone on the team had hated him with a passion and that he was real jerk. He also said that no one thought he knew what he was doing. So it sounds like he was pretty much the same way then as he is now.

I am as big as Hawk fan as anyone, but Laetner and Sampson were better than Manning. Yes Laetner had great players around him, but great players, with a great supporting cast, do exactly what Laetner did. Sampson was THE man on his team. Danny had a good supporting cast around him, and a great coach as well. Laetner was the greatest basketball player of the 90's hands down. He was tough, physical, dirty, etc... all the things the fans love to hate unless he is on your team. People want to say Danny led his team to the championship which he did, however, how many #1 seeds did they beat in getting there? The answer 0! They had things fall their way. Duke in the 90's got everyones best and still kicked thier ass.

Laetner wasn't even the best player on his team. Maybe the dirtiest, but Greg Hill was the man. And Danny was by far more important to his team.Dick Vitale's voice has ruined many a basketball game for me as I have to mute the TV and listen to the radio which may be as much as 3 seconds early. Dick sucks.

I watched Danny play all four years at KU. He was better than Laettner - he made the players around him better and he had no Grant Hill to pull off the double teams. Laettner had many great players around him. Danny made his teammates better and his team great in his KU finale. In 1988 KU had to beat K-State, Duke, and then Oklahoma - all of which were easily top 10 teams that year. So please, none of this revisionist history BS that KU played no one in 1988 to win the championship.

I liked Vitale until I read Bill Self's new book , "At Home in the Phog". Coach Self says that Vitale told him to stay at Illinois while Jay Bilas told him to go to KU. I think it finally woke me up to realize that DV is all about Duke/Carolina. I'm sure he told Roy to go home to UNC.
