Withey has Kansas high on transfer list

Jeff Withey’s high school coach says there’s a good chance the 7-foot University of Arizona freshman will be playing basketball at KU second semester.

“Jeff speaks highly of Kansas. I think they (Jayhawks) have a really good shot at landing the big fella,” Waheed Mitchell, Withey’s former coach at San Diego’s Horizon High, said Tuesday.

Withey — he averaged 20.8 points, 13.0 rebounds, 7.3 blocks and 4.1 assists as a senior — asked to be released from his scholarship at U of A after the resignation of Lute Olson.

Mitchell told the Bremerton, Wash., Kitsap Sun newspaper there was an “80 percent chance” Withey would choose KU over Texas, Gonzaga, Cincinnati, Indiana, San Diego, San Diego State and Boston College.

Mitchell didn’t mention any percentages in his interview with the Journal-World.

“Kansas is very much an option. He likes the coaches at Kansas. He went to Late Night in the Phog. He knows everything there is to know about Kansas,” Mitchell said.

What kind of player would KU get in Withey, Rivals.com’s No. 36-ranked player in the Class of 2008? He’d be eligible to practice immediately and play in games in late December of 2009.

“He has very good touch from eight to 10 feet and can also shoot the 3-ball,” Mitchell said. “He’s very skilled. He’s also very humble. He’s always been a team guy, very coachable.”

Two-sport athlete to decide Thursday

Bryant Allen, a 6-foot, 160-pound football wide receiver from Maplewood (Mo.) High, will announce for one of six schools — KU, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois State — on Thursday. All six schools will allow him to play football on scholarship and also walk-on the basketball team.

Allen told Rivals.com he visited with KU coach Bill Self as part of Sunday’s football recruiting trip to KU. Allen said Self told him he could play basketball after football season if he kept his grades up.

“It was an honor just to meet him,” Allen told Rivals.com.

Allen spent some time with KU football offensive coordinator Ed Warinner.

“He has gotten to know me as a person more than a football recruit,” Allen said. “They made me feel like I was at home,” Allen added of the football team. “I really bonded with them in just one day.”

In hoops, Allen averaged 25.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 4.1 assists per game his junior year for the Missouri state champs. He made 51.3 percent of his threes and 82.8 percent of his free throws. He was MVP of last weekend’s Webster Groves Classic. He had 29 points in the title game and set the tourney record with 84 points.

From what I just read, I think I like both of these guys and they both seem pretty high on KU. Another big would definitely be a good addition to this team (esp. a 7 footer). Let's hope for the best.

I don't see a two sport athlete at KU with FB and BB. As a freshman they have enough adjustement to accomplish. They would not be capable of being truely productive in both sports.U BB has to many people on th ebench already.I am assuming he would be a FB scholarship and walk on in BB.

Bryant Allen is an outstanding player in both sports, and apparently FB is first for him and BB is the icing on the cake. If he wants the chance to enjoy the ride of a great BB tradition, he'll come here. And the thought of another Missouri guy excited about a chance to play for KU is not bad. He is talented enough to be in the mix for playing time before his college days end, and he certainly would help make the starters better. Come on down, Bryant Allen.

Withey humble? We don't want humble big men. Eric Chenowith was a talented big man who was humble. We want big men who tear the glass out of the backboard frame. We want bigs who dominate their opponents, who lock them down, and finish all over them. Withey has touch from 8 to 10 and from trinity? Can he rebound? Can he defend? Can he take people up with him as he finishes? Can he jump?Does he look out for his buddy?

Well he averages 7.3 blocks a game. Sounds like he can defend.

Anyone who met Chenowith knows he WASN'T "humble". The guy was an a**hole. I'll take him, You can naver have too many bigs in Self's system. I really hope we land Allen. He is a stud at both sports and to get a walkon with the talent he has, would be a boon to even our basketball squad.

Jaybate, Chenowith was a pompous a$$. Nothing humble about him.I am afraid Withey is like Padgett... Not what we need.

Jaybate; did you read the article? Can he rebound? 13 per gameCan he defend? 7+ blocks per gameCan he take people up with him as he finishes? what does this mean? Can he jump? he's already 7' tall...Does he look out for his buddy? again, what does that mean?Plus he has range...Yes, there is a diff. btw H.S. stats and college but these are good number none-the-less.Being humble doesn't necessarily mean he'll be meek around the basket. Trust Self to evaluate the talent coming in...

It would be fun to have a two sport athlete again play for the Hawks. Does anyone remember the 88 team. They were hurting to fill out the roster and added 2 football players. Clint Normore had some good action in that tourney run. Go Hawks!!

I suspect "humble" means he doesn't think he's such hot stuff that he won't take instruction from the coach because he already knows how to do everything. It has nothing to do with his style of play.

It's pretty pompous for fans that have never even seen this guy play to say we don't need him. We don't need him!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?! Have you seen our interior play this year? Yeah, the Morris twins are so good that we don't need anyone else. Right.Nice fantasy land you live in. I feel like I'm just banging my head against the wall here.

Withey has been quoted as saying he didn't want to start playing with the Arizona team, after he asked for his transfer, because he didn't think it was fair to his teammates. That is not a 'me first' type guy. He also has said he likes defense the most. That's definitely is a Bill Self kid. Drawbacks: He committed to Louisville when he was 16 and then decommitted, so he is now on his third school. I can't say as I blamed him about Arizona because he wanted to be coached by Lute and then O'Neal because they had coached big men to the NBA. I'm sure Danny and our 2008 bigs in the NBA will help our chances.

Ha, I was waiting for someone to mention Clint Normore. What a spark he was for that '88 team. I think he was added because we ran out of players that year.Allen seems solid, he would be great for our football team and if he can make the bball team as a walk-on, more power to him. As for Withey being humble, no worries. Manning is as humble as they come. Being humble and being tenacious on the court are not mutually exclusive.Yahweh, easy on the excessive exclamation marks!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Only one is required!

Excellent point about Manning, Strikewso. I've always found it kind of ridiculous that people equate someone's off-court personality with how they play the game.Tim Tebow seems like a fairly humble person and he won the Heisman last year. And there have been plenty of other examples of people who were humble off the field but excelled on it. (Walter Payton? David Robinson? Rick Barry? Okay, just kidding on that last one.)

A reminder that Snaer, Henry, and Cheek were down to two schools, too, but Stephenson has an attitude that I really like. He is an in your face, take it to the hoop, high intensity guy .. and he's good out to 22 or so. Withey would be perfect for him and for KU. Aldrich is gone after this year. He's already in lottery talk.

jaybate (anonymous) says...

Withey...has he got a pair? That's the question. When you're 7' tall and humble in high school, you can get 20ppg, 13rpg, and 7 bpg, especially if you're all the team has and you walk and chew gum. How good was his team? Was he it?I still think its absurd to talk about what a terrific replacement Withey would be for Cole. Cole was beaten up on for a year by 3 NBA draftees. Cole wanted to be a Jayhawk since he was 10 years old. Cole committed to KU before he had pimples. Cole is all Jayhawk and he is battle tested and even he is having some growing pains.Jeff Withey couldn't make up his mind between schools the first time around till the last minute and then went to a school whose idea of a great big man was Luke Walton and whose bigs have usually tended to be one or two dimensional softies. Now, Jeff Withey, because he couldn't play for one of the true jerks of college basketball--Lute "cheap shot'em if they get ahead, let me marry gal youngin' while the wife is still fresh in the ground, let me take season off to divorce, and let me shaft Kevin O'Neill" Olson.Umm...Glad he's interested. Its great to add a 7 footer anytime.But...I'm gonna have to learn a lot more favorable things than I know now to believe this guy can carry Cole's jock strap, much less start in his place next year.

Jaybate,I don't read here all that often, but when I do, I notice you. You're an interesting guy and I value your input. Since you don't know me, take this FWIW. Bill Self and Danny Manning want Withey. No one has said, at least no one that knows anything, that Withey is assured of being an equivalent of Cole Aldrich from day 1 of elegibility. What I'll say is that I've seen this kid play and I know a bit about the kid's demeanor. We want him as a part of this program. All 7 footers are a bit goofy, but this is a good kid with game.BTW, don't believe that it's a done deal that Cole is gone. I'd put it at 50-50. And even if he is, Withey will gain big time experience practicing against Cole the remainder of the year.Juju
