Location: Minneapolis
Mascot: Golden Gophers
Conference: Big Ten
Coach: Tim Brewster, second season
2008 Record: 7-5 (3-5 in the Big Ten)
Last bowl game: Lost, 44-41, to Texas Tech in 2006 Insight Bowl
General: No team in college football enjoyed a better turnaround this season, as the Gophers put together seven victories just a year after finishing 1-11. In doing so, the team earned its eighth bowl invitation in the past 10 seasons. This will mark the second Insight Bowl appearance in the past three years for Minnesota, which faced Texas Tech in the 2006 game. Overall, the Gophers are making their 13th bowl appearance and have an all-time bowl record of 5-7.
Offensive outlook: Much of Minnesota’s offensive success this season can be attributed to the team’s passing game. Junior receiver Eric Decker earned first-team All-Big Ten honors after catching 76 passes for 925 yards and six touchdowns during the regular season. Sophomore quarterback Adam Weber, meanwhile, was a second-team all-conference selection after completing 236 of 376 passes (62.8 percent) for 2,585 yards and 14 touchdowns with eight interceptions.
The Gophers have struggled running the ball, however, as they rank 11th in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game (105.8) and average yards per carry (3.2). The bulk of the team’s carries have gone to freshman DeLeon Eskridge, who has compiled 652 yards and seven touchdowns on 170 carries.
Defensive outlook: In giving up 378.4 yards per game, the Gophers rank 10th in the Big Ten in total defense. They’re also 10th in pass defense, allowing 231.6 yards a game through the air. However, their turnover margin (30 takeaways to 18 turnovers) is second in the conference to only Fiesta Bowl-bound Ohio State and is a big reason they were able to win seven games this year.
Led by defensive end Willie VanDeSteeg (18 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks in ’08), defensive back Traye Simmons (four interceptions, one touchdown return) and linebacker Lee Campbell (two interceptions, three fumbles recovered), Minnesota has proved to be among the nation’s best at taking the ball from opposing offenses.

10th in the Big 10 in pass defense, I like the sound of that. It looks like if we hold onto the ball we should be in good shape against these guys.

are we in a better bowl than misery again? they play earlier which generally means less prestigious.

PS I do like the matchup.Sounds like they can throw it around a little bit as well, which we have obviously struggled with , but I would hope we can score on them.Should be entertaining, but I would prefer a blowout, statement game against the Big 10 as a spring board for next year.Go Jayhawks!

Yeah, well the math isn't what recruits look at. They look at perceived prestige...

I don't think the later the bowl the better, necessarily...the International Bowl is on Jan 3 and the GMAC Bowl on Jan 6...I don't think anyone is confusing those with the prestige of some of the New Year's Day games...

Who cares at least we get to go to a game. I would have preferred the Alamo Bowl because it is closer but I am not complaining. Well thats not true, this game is on the NFL Network so I cant watch it at home....guess I will head to Lawrence.

Can someone please explain to this ignoramus why a college football game is on the NFL Network to begin with?

chuckberry32......That's a great question. Good luck finding a reasonable answer. If they put their game on a "regular" channel, they would be able to pay out more than the measley $1.2M because they would have more ad revenue.

Mizzou got picked in a better bowl than we did... the Alamo Bowl.Their reason behind this? They didn't want to go against the Big 12 in choosing the 3rd place team in the North above the North Division winner. I didn't know the Big 12 could tell which Bowl teams could go to which bowls now... that's comforting to hear...The NFL network... I thought this was College football.

It's not the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl or the Lysol Toilet Bowl. The Insight Bowl is in warm Arizona on New Year's eve against a Big 10 opponent. Benefits are 1.2 mil, warm weather destination for Alumni and players, ability for team to practice through out December, National Spotlight to showcase football program and help recruiting, and for the players to celebrate the season.

I think Patterson might get one as well. I will go with an over/under of 2 ints for our defense, and an over/under of 0.5 int for their defense based only on the fact that we will likely throw it 40+ times.Believe it or not, I am a bit concerned about the team overlooking Minnesota for the fact that we have played such an insane schedule against some great teams this year and the Big 10(11) is preceived to be overrated this year.

I'm excited. KU gets to show the Big Ten that the Big XII was the premier conference of 2008. I'm just glas we play another team from a BCS conference. Playing a mid-major would have been boring.

As huge Jayhawk fan, just the extra practice for this young team is more important than fizzou gets a "better" bowl, more money, or coverage on what channel. the extra practice alone is a big maturity factor alone. Go Jayhawks, beat the goofers...rock chalk jayhawk, go ku!!!!

If Minnesota were in the Big 12 with those defensive numbers they would have one of the best defenses in the league. The bad news is the Big 10 is down and their teams do not spread the ball over the field. It will be an interesting matchup. This game looks good for us on paper.

I'm a Twin Cities Jayhawk and the Goofers aren't that good. They got beat at home during their last game of the season, 55-0, to Iowa. Yup, a shutout. Iowa doesn't run the spread or anything that would help them rack up such points. They're pretty conservative when it comes to scoring, but the Goofers couldn't even get a field goal against their defense. Brewster is trying to run the spread there, but doesn't have the talent to support the game plan just yet. Their star receiver Decker is no joke though. He's good. Wasn't really recruited by anyone, but has made a name for himself in Brewster's offense. There really is no comparison between the competition KU faced in the Big 12 versus what the Goofers faced in the Big 10. Toughest opponent the Goofers faced was Ohio St. on the road and they couldn't hang. At least KU was competitive with OU and Texas for 1st half of those games. As long as KU doesn't look past the UofM and plays with some energy like the did against MU, this matchup would favor the Jayhawks.I was hoping we'd get the Badgers. I've seen a number of Goofer games and just about every KU game. Seeing that we'll be healthy come bowl time, watch out rodents cause there is a 'hawk in the air.I'll be there in Tempe, AZ regardless.

"National Spotlight to showcase football program and help recruiting"You can just cross that one off because most of the nation doesn't even have that channel.

I'm getting an uneasy feeling about the way the jayhawk community, and now even the players, are looking at this bowl game. Minnesota started 7 and 1 before they had the rough finish. They are not bottom feeders, and with the month of preparation they might very well rediscover the team they were earlier in the year. I hate that KU will probably be favored by a large margin. We need to find a reason to have a chip on our shoulders and something to prove.

After watching the interviews in the DJ video our guys still don't know the opponent. They are talking about facing a running team when in fact the Gophers play a spread. Plenty of time to fix that so we can crush them. Looking forward to my first real trip to AZ. Thanks Hawks.
