Complete video coverage of the 2008 Insight Bowl.

The Kansas University football team is headed to the Insight Bowl.

A source with inside knowledge of the negotiations told the Journal-World on Thursday that Kansas University is planning to announce Friday that it will be putting tickets on sale for the 2008 Insight Bowl.

The Tempe, Ariz.-based bowl, which kicks off at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 at Sun Devil Stadium, annually pits a Big 12 team against a team from the Big Ten. Because it remains unclear how many Big Ten teams will be represented in BCS bowls, however, the Jayhawks' opponent has not yet been determined.

Fellow Big 12 North member Nebraska, meanwhile, is currently selling tickets to the Jan. 1 Gator Bowl, where the Huskers will take on Clemson.

The Alamo Bowl, which had discussed the possibility of offering a bid to Kansas, is no longer an option for the Jayhawks. According to the source, even if the Alamo Bowl thought Kansas would be a better draw, the San Antonio-based bowl would not want to go against the wishes of one of its partners, the Big 12 Conference, by bypassing the North champion in favor of the division's third-place finisher.

I kinda figured this would be our bowl. We can beat any Big 10 team. Any of 'em. Rock Chalk, let's whup some butt.

What? That's not right....Nebraska was selected for a better bowl and technically Mizzou is above them (head to head), so why neglect us because the North Division (not the confrence standings) is a three-way tie? (4-1 for NU, MU, and KU)

Here in the sticks, we don't get NFL network. And there aren't places nearby to go watch the game. So I'm a little disappointed we are in the only Big 12 bowl that won't be on tv. NCAA should ban the NFL network from collecting a dime of college football.

The Insight bowl? What's next, the Epiphany Bowl? HAHAHAHA!

0

HawkFanEddie 5 years, 8 months ago

I've heard that Insight was founded by KU guys and they REALLY wanted us at there bowl game. Anyone know if there was any truth to that?

What a way to bookend the year of 2008! Start off the year with an Orange Bowl victory, end the year with our first back-to-back bowl game ever, and, oh yeah, a basketball national championship in the middle! It is definitely a great time to be a Jayhawk! Rock Chalk!

Ha, anyone catch the hidden implication here: "even if the Alamo Bowl thought Kansas would be a better draw...would not want to go against the wishes of the Big 12 Conference by bypassing the North champion." Hehehe.

License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote.

Way to go, guys!! Have a great time in Tempe. Airfare--$350, hotel-$250, watching the Insight Bowl while K-State sits at home-PRICELESS!

The Big 12 can now dictate which bowls it's teams can go to? Since when did that start. So if Mizzou wins wouldn't the Alamo bowl still want us then?Alamo Bowl is on ESPN - Better coverage for us. Better recruitment in Texas!

KU goes to consecutive bowls for the first time in history and some people are bitching? Shut up.

Since I don't get NFL Network, now I have an excuse to go to a bar on New Year's Eve. Thanks Lew!!

0

rockchalkin54 5 years, 8 months ago

It's just disappointing that the game is on NFL Network. Still not sure why that is, but whatever. I guess I'll have to listen to Bob Davis on the radio.

0

Trobs 5 years, 8 months ago

I am thrilled we are going to another bowl. It isn't BCS, but I think it still validates us as a football school. I think the Big 12 dictating bowls is out of line. It is suppose to be on the bowls to decide. If Mizzou is not what Alamo wants, why can't they choose us?

0

Djibouti 5 years, 8 months ago

Agree. The Alamo Bowl guys know that Mizzou and their fans will not be excited to play in their Bowl game, coming in 9-4 having lost their last two games (KU, OU). Mizzou will have about 11 fans show up; the rest will sit at home on their fat buts in their la-z boys, snuggled up to their battered sense of entitlement. If the Alamo Bowl put KU on the sheet, we'd be excited, travel well, play with heart, and make everyone a whole bucket load of money.

0

Trobs 5 years, 8 months ago

This all leads back to last year and the Orange Bowl. Mizzou got blown out by OU in the Big 12 Championship and the BCS guys all ran away from them and fast. Orange bowl looks over, thinks we're the strong team and takes us. Big 12 stepped in this year to avoid a repeat. Now Mizzou just needs to win to completely screw things up. BCS Championship Game - TexasFiesta - MizzouCotton - OUHoliday - TTGator - OSU Alamo - KUSee? It works out! It does beg the question what happens if Mizzou wins. This is assuming the Gator Bowl takes a big 12 team as well. If they don't obviously OSU could be taken into the Alamo bowl then it's a moot point.

jayhawk2062 5 years, 8 months ago

I can understand why Nebraska got picked over Missouri. It's basically what happened with us and Missouri last year. Both teams have the same record

Think of it this way... KU plays Arizona in hoops on Dec 24th and then KU Football stomps on the sorry Golden Gophers on Dec 31st. Make a vacation out of it! A sweet 2 for 1 KU week in sunny Arizona. No better way to spend Christmas besides with the one's you love! :) Rock Chalk Jayhawk!P.S. The owner of Insight.com who sponsers this bowl is a KU and a Delta Chi Alum.

0

Carter Patterson 5 years, 8 months ago

HawkFanEddie: Yes, Insight.com was started by a few KU guys. Nice to see our Alumni doing well! Looks like we'll play either Minnesota or Wisconsin. I like our chances against either one. Especially if our defense and our OL/DL keep improving.

0

nejayhawk 5 years, 8 months ago

Actually Trobs, Gator already is taking Nebraska, not official but the ticket office down here in Lincoln is selling tickets to the Gator Bowl, so your scenario is close to impossible as I would expect Alamo to take OSU at that point.I'm excited for the bowl game, may need to see if I can find a way to get down to Tempe. I'd love to be present to see the Jayhawks finish the season at 8-5 beating some pud Small 11 team.Rock Chalk!

just curious why people are saying we are gonna be playin the goofers? just curious.

0

jhawkfan22 5 years, 8 months ago

I think it's just because some of the other sports sights are predicting Minnesota. So, I'm thinking "Hmmm...spend New Years here in bitterly cold Chicago or warm, sunny Arizona?" No brainer! Tempe here I come! ;-)

0

Rivethead 5 years, 8 months ago

People are saying we'll be playing the gophers based on their predictions with how the bowls will select teams. The bowls select teams in a certain order. By the time the Insight Bowl gets to choose it's Big Ten team, Wisconsin and Minnesota are likely the only options left.KU going to the bowl is FANTASTIC for our program and I wish some people would take some Midol and quit their b*tchin. We need to represent so that next year and the year after and the year after, etc., etc. the bowls take notice and desire us.

BCS National Championship - OklahomaBCS - TexasCotton Bowl - Texas TechHoliday Bowl - Oklahoma StateGator Bowl - NebraskaAlamo Bowl - MissouriInsight Bowl - KansasIt kind of sucks for the conference that Colorado and K-State couldn't fill out the last two bowl spots. The Independence Bowl and Texas Bowl won't have a Big 12 team this year.

KUAlum2000 5 years, 8 months ago

Were out here in PHX and I just bought my tix to the game. KU b-ball is actually on the 23rd, I think. Tickets are available to that through the UofA, but it's a package thing (KU, Weber St and 2 other games) for $90 a pop. Also, the Upper Deck in Scottsdale is the big KU alumni place. It fills to capacity (~300 I'd guess) for any KU event.

0

jahawkdave 5 years, 8 months ago

Is there a scenario where Tech gets in a BCS bowl by OU finishing BCS#1 Florida wins but Finishes BCS#3 behind Texas. If its Texas vs OU in the BCS title Game could that open a third BCS spot for a Big 12 team (Tech)? even though they limit 2 teams pre conf?

On the Time Warner Cable web site, under "channel lineups / sports" they have a selection titled "NFL Network". There, they have a lengthy tirade that slams the NFL and the NFL network and includes the following statement:"The greedy NFL has decided to charge you for the games that used to be free" ... It's just another attempt to take games away from the public so they can make as much money as possible". It goes on to say: "All of the NFL Network's eight regular season games will be available on broadcast TV in the local markets of the teams playing ... so you can see the games on local broadcast carried by Time Warner Cable". (It says the NFL network only carries eight games over six weeks)Maybe there's hope that this will be the case with the Insight Bowl, also. Maybe, in the local markets (i.e. Lawrence, Kansas City) the game will also be available on the local broadcast stations.Let's hope.

Does anyone know when exactly KU will be selling tickets to the bowl? Or should I just look at other websites for one?

0

TxJyHwk 5 years, 8 months ago

jayhawkdave: For a conference to get 3 in, they would all have to be automatic bids. In other words, if the #1 and #2 in the BCS were from the same conference - but neither one is the automatic bid.So, they only way for that to happen is if Texas and TTech finish #1&#2 in the BCS poll.

"At Kansas' School of Journalism, they tought us not to use unnamed sources."So are you saying that Watergate (and other scandals) should never have been reported? One of the best things about playing Minnesota or Wisconsin is that, as far as I know, neither of them uses a spread offense. That should help KU immensely. On a completely different note, does anyone know if the KU B-Ball game tomorrow against Jackson St. will be on ESPN Full Court? As of this morning, the guide on my TV didn't show the KU game for any of the ESPN Full Court channels.

jbsd31 5 years, 8 months ago

I wish we could have gone to a little better bowl (one that's not on NFL Network) for exposure reasons. But after my preseason hopes of the Hawks being out here for the Holiday Bowl went out the window; selfishly, I couldn't be more happy. Tempe is an easy drive from San Diego, and I was already headed to the basketball game. Looks like 2 road trips through the desert in 8 days. Rock Chalk.

I know I already posted this, but last year when Oklahoma St. played in the Insight Bowl the game was on local TV in the Oklahoma City area. http://newsok.com/article/3179817/1197434131 Hopefully they will do the same this year in KC/Lawrence.

Too bad Glen Mason is no longer at Minnesota. What a great storyline that would've been. Plus, it would've been a great chance to get back at him for leaving our program in shambles.

0

Hawkish4bigM 5 years, 8 months ago

I don't think that Mason did leave the program in shambles. I think he did a good job at KU. His last season was a distraction because he left, then didn't leave at the end of the great 95' season. I loved that toss sweep that we used to do. Like to see that on 3rd and short. If you can read a block it is pretty much a gimme.Congrats Hawks on two bowls in a row. I also feel pretty good about a matchup from the Big 11. Rock, chalk!

Reesing the rattle snake wrestler, had a very golden arm. And if you ever saw it, you might even say it glows. All of the other players, used to laugh and call him names. They never let short Reesing, join in any football games. Then one dreary saturday at half, Mangino came to say, hohoho. Reesing with your golden arm, why don't you guide my team this half! Then all the players loved him, as they shouted out with glee, yippee! Reesing the rattle snake wrestler, You'll go down in history....Like Gayle Sayers!

trojanhawk (anonymous) says...Here's a thought. If you're all upset about not being able to get NFL Network, just go to the game. The more fans that show up, the more likely other bowls will want KU in future games. What's not to like about Tempe in December? Highs in the low 70s, plenty of great hotels and more than enough nightlife.------------------------------------You know it's not always that easy. Not everyone can afford to just go to Tempe.
