While representatives of the Alamo Bowl have discussed the possibility of selecting the Kansas University football team during Sunday’s selection show, most of their attention is currently focused on fellow Big 12 schools Oklahoma State and Missouri, according to a bowl official.
“We had a meeting last Monday, and we talked about Kansas,” Rick Hill, vice president of marketing and communications for the Alamo Bowl, said Wednesday. “Right now, our focus was that we’re focusing on Oklahoma State and Missouri, barring anything wacky like coaches leaving, players getting hurt.”
The Alamo Bowl, held Dec. 29 in San Antonio, annually pits a Big 12 team against a team from the Big Ten, with a combined payout of $4.45 million in 2008. After the BCS bowls have been filled, the Alamo Bowl has either the third or fourth pick among Big 12 teams, depending on whether the Gator Bowl selects a team from the Big 12.
Currently, the Gator Bowl is required to pick a Big 12 team twice over a four-year period. In years it does so, the bowl is one spot ahead of the Alamo Bowl in the conference pecking order.
If the Alamo Bowl is not interested, the Insight Bowl, played Dec. 31 in Tempe, Ariz., will be KU’s likely bowl destination.
The Insight Bowl has the sixth pick in the Big 12 and has been following Kansas actively throughout the second half of the season.
And Tuesday’s comments from Hill don’t do anything to suggest the Jayhawks won’t be spending their New Year’s Eve in the desert.
“I think Kansas will probably be brought up Sunday,” Hill said. “But they’re not really on the board.”

Who cares about the Alamo Bowl - played in a dump, unamagitive football facility? Tempe, Ariz. is a far better destination in winter.

Good lord. This tool needs to go. There is no reason to write this article other than to say Missouri might get selected ahead of KU for a bowl.

we all want the Alamo Bowl so let's not pretend like we wouldn't take it in a heartbeat. Let's compare: Insight= NFL network, about 75% of high school recruits don't have this channel. Alamo Bowl= ESPN= most recognizable name in sports television. Recruiting hotbed for KU- Arizona= very few Texas = A boat load. Alamo Bowl>>>>>>>>>>>Insight Bowl. Taken care of NU when we should have we'd have a shot at Phoenix in a different bowl.

What's the reasoning on this? Why not consider KU? Don't we bring fans? Didn't we beat Missouri straight up?

I agree with roundrockjhawk, the Alamo offers better viewer and recruiting exposure. That's my first choice. But for the fans who attend, Arizona will be great.
Wherever we go, there's no downside to back to back bowl games, a classic win against MU, and continuing to ride a high from the Orange Bowl and NCAA Championship. RockChalk

I think I read somewhere the Insight Bowl payout is around $1.2M. As roundrock said, for the sake of recruiting, the Alamo Bowl would be superior. As mvjayhawk said, if MU gets beat to a pulp like they did last year in the Big 12 championship, they won't look like such a great choice to the Alamo Bowl.....two straight losses.

roundrockjhawk,
If we take care of Nebraska like we should have, no one would be talking bowls. We'd be talking, "how we going to beat oklahoma" and win our first big 12 championship. That's how important that loss was.

I think the Alamo bowl would prefer OSU to Missouri anyway. Here's my guesses on Big XII bowls.
If OU wins the conference
Oklahoma - National Title Game
Texas - Fiesta
Missouri - Gator
Texas Tech - Cotton
Oklahoma State - Alamo
Kansas - Insight.com
Nebraska - Houston
If MU wins
Missouri - Fiesta
Texas - Sugar (assuming Texas doesn't jump to #2 in BCS)
Oklahoma - Cotton
Texas Tech - Gator
Oklahoma State - Alamo
Kansas - Insight.com
Nebraska - Houston
Basically, any way you slice it, the BCS will take two Big XII teams. The Gator bowl is going to either take Missouri or Texas Tech if they can get them. The Cotton bowl will take a South team. The only way KU gets in the Alamo bowl is if they skip OSU.
If the Gator bowl declines to take a Big XII team (unlikely since so many Big XII teams are highly ranked), KU may end up in Houston or the Independence Bowl (depending on whether they flip flop KU and NU).

Why would Nebraska be below us? If anything, they've got Flordia in their Sights for the Gator Bowl. Justanotherfan, do you even read the sports news?
If OU loses, that's it, we have Insight.
If OU wins, but by a small victory, we have Insight.
If OU murders the kitties, then we have a chance... so hope for a blowout and pray that we can get some more magic out of San Antonio!
As for the fans... isn't that the reason why the Orange Bowl selected us last year (they can say the one-loss blah, blah crap, but in reality, its about the fan revenue).
Texas and OU are taking the BCS/NC spots (Unless Mizzou somehow crashes the party), OSU/Tech will sweep Cotton and Holiday, NU has the Gator pretty much locked up... so it will come down to Mizzou/KU for fighting for the Alamo/Insight...

I think the reason that this article was written is because of all the talk about the possibility of KU going to the Alamo. I think it is nice that Dugan laid out the thoughts of the Alamo Bowl people.
I know that I have had numerous texts and emails from people talking about the fact that KU was being mentioned for the Alamo bowl on the local radio stations. With that being the case, isn't it expected that the beat reporter for KU football look into it? He just can't win. If he doesn't report it, then all of you critics would be complaining that he didn't get any info on the Alamo bowl. Good grief!
Why can't you just take in the info? Why do you feel the need to complain about getting information. Regardless of if you like the info or not. At least you are getting it.

The Insight Bowl would seem sooooooo much more appealing if it wasn't on the NFL Network. It just bugs the heck out of me that all the Bowls except 2 are on a major network, and the Big 12 has tie-ins to both of those Bowls (Insight and Texas). I realize the Big 12 won't send a team to the Texas Bowl this year, but they really need to get this fixed. What's 2 more bowls ESPN? Pick them up please!
