Kansas University defensive line coach Joe Bob Clements is leaving KU to take over as defensive ends coach at rival Kansas State, Wildcats coach Bill Snyder announced Thursday.
Clements, who is in his first season as a Jayhawks assistant, was part of 10 bowl games as both a player and coach with Kansas State and spent a total of seven years working under the legendary Snyder, who will return to the Wildcats' sideline next season after a three-year hiatus. Clements represents the first known member of Snyder's new staff.
After walking on to the Wildcats team prior to the 1996 season, Clements developed into an honorable mention all-Big 12 selection before graduating in 1999. He remained at KSU when his playing career was over, serving as a student and graduate assistant before taking over as defensive ends coach from 2003-05. He also spent two seasons as the defensive line coach at San Diego State before joining KU coach Mark Mangino's staff earlier this year.
Clements will not coach the Jayhawks in their yet-to-be-determined bowl game, Kansas officials said Thursday.
“We’ll absorb his responsibilities among the staff,” KU associate athletics director Jim Marchiony said. “That’s what will likely happen.”
A Kansas State spokesman, meanwhile, said Clements will begin recruiting for the Wildcats immediately.

The only reason why this was mentioned today is because Kietzman on 810 all but backed Snyder in a corner about raiding Mangino's staff.

Don't think we'll miss him that much. I mean, come on, it wasn't like our DL play was stellar by any means.

This just means our D-Line will get better and K-state's just got worse, if that is possible.

Joe Bob is a douche and always will be. This is good news for our Hawks...in getting rid of him and him going to K-State.

From a career standpoint, who not? It's not like Joe Bob was going to climb the coaching ranks here.Hell, he may be KSUcks head coach in 2 or 3 years.

Personally, I wasn't convinced in his coaching abilities. However, I am concerned about the fact he knows about everyone we were trying to recruit and our strategy and that can only help Snyder.

No loss. "Wild Willie" Snyder is grasping at straws with this hire. KU's defensive line this year? Laughable, about as tough as a wet newspaper. As the result, my guess is Mangino was looking for a way to ease Joe Bob out of Lawrence, and found it: Manhattan.

Agreed, rasta. The handwriting was on the wall regarding this move when Snyder was hired. Clements may not be a great coach, but he might take a few of our recruits with him. The Rivals list for KU has four as recruited by him. Two are KS kids. Two or three were also recruited by KSU. I would bet that the hiring has much to do with the recruits he can bring with him - perhaps those that have yet to commit?

There is no doubt Bill Snyder did a lot for KSU football, but I would find it incredible to think a kid would de-commit from a better team to go to a worse team. Is a 17 or 18yr old player going to have name recognition of 'Bill Snyder'? Someone who hasnt coached in 3yrs (these recruits would have been 13-14 yrs old?) and certainly has not been calling your parents or any other recruiting activities. Especially if you committed to KU, then saw that KU-Mizz game, and also saw the turmoil over in Manhattan this season--how could you pick KSU? Got big dreams? Talib and Fine are in the NFL this year and seeing playing time. Im not sure about KSU players. I can understand if a head coach leaves, but to leave following a D-Line position coach leaving just sounds like a stretch to me?

I can't really be mad at a guy that is just going back to his alma mater to coach. I'm sure he's a good guy and would have been a solid coach for us if he had stayed longer.I have no problem wishing him well for 364 days of every year.Good luck at K-State coach.

This is NOT a big deal at all. Our defensive ends totally sucked, and while I don't blame that on Billy Joe Jim Bob, he certainly did nothing to show that he was some sort of invaluable up and comer. As far as recruits go....if a kid wants to decomit from KU, a program on the rise, with a BCS Bowl title under it's belt and probable bowl trips every year, while playing tough schedules, to go to a school whose luster from playing absolutley no one very season, fell off 7-10 yrs ago, let them. They're probably not smart enough to qualify academically to play at KU in the first place.rcjhku!rhfho!

There's probably some good assistants at Tennessee or Auburn we could bring in to replace Joe Bob or whoever is moved into Joe Bob's position. Tennessee and Auburn have been down recently but they are solid programs who are used to playing tough teams. As far as Joe Bob wanting to go back to K-State, that kind of speaks for itself as far as his abilities.

Ok, first of all, don't be name calling kraus42...that's lame. Second of all, several people on here have already said it-you can't blame the guy for wanting to go back to his alma mater. Third, do some research. He coached some great defensive ends under Snyder when Kansas State was a power. I'm not a K-State fan, but I'm pretty sure they'll be a contender in the north within the next two years.

Some of you people are pretty dumb. Coach Clements did not play for KU. KU's D-line was seriously under-manned and injury-riddled this season. That has nothing to do with coaching. Coach Clements is a very good coach and recruiter. This is a blow to the KU program, no doubt about it. However, KU has a lot to offer and as jayhawkintexas states, there are some solid programs we can poach from.kansas25.....If your betting on KSU, I'll take that bet. Old man Snyder can't recruit Prop 48 players or use the Powercat Jet to fly recruits directly to Mancrappy anymore. That hill is much steeper to climb and the climber is much, much older. I would be willing to concede that KSU will be .500 within the next two years, however.

I actually used to know Joe Bob from Emporia High School. I used to play hoops with his younger brother Jeb, who was twice the athlete Joe Bob was, but about half the size. I think Jeb wound up playing football at Emporia State. Joe Bob was a senior when I was a freshman, was a heck of a hooper in his day. I, for one, wish him luck.

Stubblefield? He's a juicer! No way we hire an admitted roid head. We might as well go after Mark Gastineau. One of Mangino's best qualities is finding hidden talent. Both coaches and players. I'm sure he already has a dozen guys in mind, but I doubt Stubblefield is one of them. Maybe I'm missing something but BALCO and college athletics should be in different galaxies.I'd rather go after Gilbert Brown and field the heftiest coaching staff in history but I don't think we could pry him from the Wisconsin area. He was going into coaching if I remember, but for some reason he decided against it. Gilbert is a good guy who could probably still crush a college double team. I bet he would be great for Parish, Johnson and Greene. Especially with Parish's development as a monster in the middle.
