Last May, a survey taken of 12 Lawrence men who cut hair for a living resulted in four of them predicting a 10-2 regular-season record for Kansas University’s 2008 football team. Six guessed 9-3, one forecasted an 8-4 finish, and only Rockie Browning of “Images” on Ninth Street nailed it with a fearless forecast of 7-5.
Give two guys credit for picking with their heads. The other 10 let their hearts make the call.
If 7-5 sounds too much like the same old Kansas football season, take a closer look to realize that this season’s 7-5 is really more like 8-4 because of the difficult schedule.
A year ago, Kansas benefited from a schedule that didn’t include Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech. This year, the Jayhawks were the only North team that had to face all three powers. The three-way tie among the South powers has created quite a controversy, given that computers had a role in choosing the Sooners to represent the South in the Big 12 title game.
Meanwhile, what nobody has bothered to notice yet is that three teams from the inferior Big 12 North were nearly as closely bunched as were the three South teams. One reason that has flown under the radar is because there was no three-way tie. Missouri and Nebraska tied for first, Kansas finished a game back, and Missouri advances based on its blowout victory against the Cornhuskers.
Yet, all three Big 12 North teams went 4-1 against teams from the North. The difference: Missouri and Nebraska picked up a win apiece against Baylor, which wasn’t on KU’s schedule.
Sometimes the schedule helps, sometimes it hurts. Eventually, it all evens out.
The 7-5 also feels more like 8-4 because the season included such a bad beating of rival Kansas State that the Wildcats fired their coach a few days later and had him walk the plank from the sidelines for the remainder of the season, and because it included a thrilling victory against KU’s No. 1 rival, nationally ranked Missouri.
Before last season’s 7-1 conference finish, KU never had done better than 3-5 in the Big 12. The Jayhawks finished 4-4 this season.
“We’d like to say, ‘Hey, maybe if we’d have done this better or this better, maybe we’d be better than 7-5,’” Kansas coach Mark Mangino said after the game. “The reality of it is we’re 7-5. And at least we finished on a strong note, and we’ll get ready to play a bowl game. We’re excited about that. Our players are looking forward to it, and let’s go get another win.”
Kansas can’t officially sign with a bowl until Selection Sunday, but the way the dominoes will fall, it’s a lock the Jayhawks will compete in the Insight Bowl in Tempe on New Year’s Eve. Minnesota is the most likely opponent, although Wisconsin remains a possibility.
If Glen Mason’s last two schools face off, KU will be favored heavily against Minnesota. The Golden Gophers take a 7-5 record and four-game losing streak into the bowl season. Not only that, they are coming off of a 55-0 loss to Iowa. After that humiliation, the offensive line coach resigned, and Gophers coach Tim Brewster raided Alabama’s coaching staff to replace him. In his second season after replacing the ousted Mason, Brewster has an 8-16 record.
If Minnesota’s the bowl foe, Kansas finally catches a scheduling break.

Let's take it to whoever we play in our bowl game. 8-5 would be a decent record with our schedule. A season in which we beat both of our rivals Missouri and Kansas State in the same season. I'd take ending the season on a two game winning streak against quality opponents.rock chalk!

Will the Big XII ever do anything to adjust the scheduling so that it isn't feast or famine for KU? No other team has to deal with the polar swings that we have to. One more year of the top of the South, and then it is 2 more years of bottom dwellers.

Yeah I know what you mean. It's usually either a great year or bad year for Kansas against the Big 12 south teams when they have it like that. They need to juggle it up a little like all the other north teams.

The Big 12 is set up perfectly to have a schedule that would settle all the debate about who's the best in the conference. With a 12-game schedule every season and 12 teams in the conference, each team should schedule a I-AA / FCS team to open the season as a warm-up, then play every other team in the conference every season. Then, the only thing to debate is how much of an advantage the home field gives a team. You can maintain the divisions and have a championship game as well.

Scootsbe has a good point. Forget the powder puffs; one such game is enough. Who wants to pay $45 per seat to watch multiple wanna-be's play a Big 12 team, with the game over after the first quarter? Bottom line, though, is as Mangino pegged it: we're 7 - 5, let's get win # 8 in the bowl game. And as to the comment re Minnesota as an easy win for KU in the Insight bowl: Tom, you're hubris is premature.

I have been saying that for awhile scootsbe. They wont do it because the conference will beat up on themselves too much and take them self out of the national picture every year.

Nobody knew that Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma St. were going to be this good before the season. Most thought KU would get revenge on Texas, and take care of Tech too. Pre-season, most had Oklahoma, and S. Florida circled on the schedule as the most difficult games. You can't change the scheduling with knee jerk reactions. This year was the perfect storm, next year could be a down year, etc.All this schedule talk gives me a headache. Keegan says, "Hey, KU didn't play Baylor". Well what makes him think we would've beaten Baylor. They were a much better team than Iowa St., and look at the trouble KU had with them. Plus, we didn't have to play Oklahoma St. either.KU went 7-5. Which looks a hell of a lot like 7-5 to me.Great year! Bring on the Big Eleven!

About 5 years back, aTm would have been considered the "other" power team in the South instead of TT. Like all things, it's cyclical. OU and UT will probably always be on top, but the third strong school will rotate. There is NO WAY the Big 12 would ever go to an 11 game conference schedule. Dollar signs. Each team would go from an 8 game home schedule to a 6 or 7 game home schedule. Unless you figured out a way to share revenue equitably, they won't do it. The second reason they won't do it is the strength of schedule. The Big 12 would be putting itself in a competitive disadvantage for the beauty contest otherwise known as the BCS by not having 3 or 4 cupcakes on the non-con schedule of team team.7-5. It is what it is. No excuses. Had we taken care of USF and NU the way we should have, we wouldn't be complaining about the schedule.

jahawkdave, I understand the sentiment about NFL network. But two consecutive bowl games for KU doesn't suck, whatever network carries it. The crowd I watched with on Saturday was at least as excited about finishing the schedule with this win as it was with the orange bowl win. One, it was Missouri. And two, this was season of struggles, and we overcame. Let's finish strong, and I look forward to a stronger team next season with this group of seniors.

Big XII scheduling is a mess in football AND basketball. Take the ACC for example: in football they have two divisions and annual "rivalry" inter-divisional games, so that each team plays the same 6 teams every year with the remaining five rotating so you play each three times every five years. That way, the schedule constantly fluxuates, so you don't get in these feast or famine ruts.In basketball, there are no divisions, just "rivals" that each team is assured to play twice a year (UNC v. Duke, for example). This would be excellent for KU and the Big XII - imagine getting to play Texas twice a year every other season! I hate playing Iowa St. and Nebraska twice a year when our best basketball rival for the last decade has been Texas. The conference and the schools are getting screwed out of a budding rivalry and marquee matchup. Most importantly, a revised schedule would help balance out the north/south inequities which threaten to rip the conference apart.

I'm already looking forward to next season ( thanks to KU players and coaches for creating this "looking forward"), with that said, take a look at the schedule next year.We will have a good chance at winning the non-con road game, and then KU FANScircle 2 games on that schedule.......home games against Iowa State and Nebraska. We MUST do our part and pack Memorial with KU fans. Do not let husker fans havea chance to buy a ticket to that game........The game with Nebraska next year willbe HUGE

Shouldn't professional journalists refrain from "Ifs and buts" romanticizing about the season. Don't say it's just like we're 8-4. If we wanted to be 8-4 we should have beaten Nebraska or South Florida. We certainly got our behinds handed to us by the "powers in the South." I love my Jayhawks, but let's be realistic in our reporting of the season and let's leave the "woulda coulda shoulda" to the fans. Home town journalism can still be objective. Thanks Jayhawks for the most exciting football game I can remember. I don't think I could have handled the stress if I were in the stands, so I'm thankful I was watching it at home with the kids. They loved it, too.

I wouldn't want to play all 11 conference teams every year. I enjoy watching other teams come to our place and us visiting them. I don't really like watching us play so many patsies but I think our scheduling is picking up some. There are a lot of mid level BCS teams out there for us to schedule home and home games against. I hope we do that.Actually, we are really 9 - 3. If you look at what happened we ........ oh never mind. We're 7 - 5.

Yeah I think you're right oljhwk because Nebraska would be 4-4 in the conference and we would be tied with Missouri at 5-3 and would have the tiebreaker over them because we beat them in the best game I can remember in a long time.

oljhwk,Yes, if KU would of beaten Nebraska, KU would of been playing OU this weekend.Or if we would of beaten Texas Tech, we would of been in a three way tie... which most likely would of gone to Mizzou since they are the highest ranked. And hey, don't consider we have the Insight Bowl with that crappy NFL network just yet. Think what happened last year? When Mizzou loses this week (and hopefully by a large amount), maybe we'll jump them again and go to the Alamo Bowl (or Sun Bowl if Gator Bowl isn't taken?)

Sevenyear - The years KU does not play OU, Tex, or Tech, Iowa State does. Pretty amazing they did not win a conference game this year with none of the big three from the South on their schedule.JHawkshocker - Totally agree on the Nebraska game for next year. The season ticket base needs to increase again, and we cannot have people giving or selling their tickets to Husker fans, no matter the profit potential. Might be the biggest game on the schedule in '09. Would be nice to steal one from the big three in the South.Yes it would have been nice to have won the USF & NU games. We'd not only be playing this weekend, but we would be in a real good bowl as well. The team needs to take care of business in the non-con & others we are supposed to beat next year. Hopefully they will have learned from that this year.

While it's interesting to bring up how close the B12 North was to a 3 way tie as well, there is no way it would have happened in both divisions. If KU beats Nebraska, it's a 2 way tie with mizzboo (and we're playing next week), and the 3 way tie remains in the South. If we lose to Nebraska, we'd have to beat one of the South's big 3 in order to tie in the North, thus breaking up the South tie. The odds on a 3 way tie happening in both divisions in any given year would be astronomical. (And speaking of high odds, I hope some of you gamblers out there took the KU money line on Saturday as it was somewhere around +475!!)Honestly, 7 and 5 is like 12 and 0 to me right now after knocking off meth-zoo. It isn't so much the rivalry... wait... no that is huge... screw missouri. It's also, though, how gutsy this team played. They dragged their torn up bodies onto the field and played some of the best ball I've seen all year long. Now, hopefully I can make it to Tempe.....Rock Chalk

Note to tdomine: Since Keegan was writing an opinion piece and not a news story to wrap up the season, one should have expected an opinion from him. Don't expect him, no matter how professional he is, to give a straight report when he's paid to provide opinion. Besides, I like hearing good things about this team even if they are exaggerated. They deserve the kudos.

I think Tom's just pointing out the convenient memories of our rivals.Last year we were supposedly only good because of our easier schedule. Now that our schedule is harder I doubt any of them would man up and admit that playing Baylor is the biggest difference in our records. Sure there's no guarantee that KU would win that game, but it's a heck of a lot easier than TX, TT, or OU.As for me, I feel that we are a legitimate 7-5, and I have absolutely no problem with that. As old Lou Holtz would say, "you'll never pass somebody as long as you're trying to catch up" [approximate quote, I'm too lazy to look it up]. I really could care less what our rivals are doing. I just want my team to keep trying to improve itself to the point where our rivals are just another game on the schedule (much as they are in basketball). To truly reach the level that I want us to reach we'll have to be able to compete with the best teams in the nation, not just the ones that happen to be nearby.Kudos to the coaches for reaching another milestone in that quest. 7-5 with a bowl bid has become an average year for us.

Actually, this season was very close to 9-3. One pass vs S. Florida that is one yard longer and then a key first down against Nebraska is the difference. Amazing. Course those games wouldn't have been that close if the D had been there. Next year we will have a little more secondary experience but all new LBs for the most part. Meanwhile, Sharp, Meier, Reesing, Briscoe are back on offense. So, offense will probably be even better. Seems to me that the third quarter is where we were hurt the most this year. Why is that?

Hawkish: I thought some bad adjustments were made this year at halftime. Mangino did very well in preparation, but Kansas lost all of its games in the 3rd Qtr as other teams knew what to expect from a one-dimensional and battered passing game. Injuries were crucial this year too. Having Harris against USF would have meant victory (and a terrible 3rd quarter reversed a bit). Kansas could play with everyone this year, but were just flat-footed and badly prepared for Tech. Kansas needed to run Tech out of the stadium. UT really benefited from injuries as well--and that God-awful wind. That was not great preparation or game coaching that day either.

I think the biggest downside of having the bowl game on the NFL Network is exposure. Even the Fort Worth Bowl in 2005 was carried by an ESPN channel which meant that potential recruits all over the country were able to hear the Rock Chalk Chant and get yet another impression of KU.The NFL Network is in far fewer homes and so KU misses out on one of the biggest perks of going bowling.

So if we lost Saturday would it "feel" like 5-7? Not sure if I buy the thinking here. All that said, we should be happy we had an appreciably tougher schedule and are still going to a bowl game.I predicted 6-6 after the USF debacle, and am thrilled with 7-5 and a chance at 8-5.Sun, Insight, whatever bowl... we should be thankful we have a team we care about.
