Kansas forward Marcus Morris fights for the ball with the Coppin State defense during the first half Friday, Nov. 28, 2008 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas University freshman Marcus Morris made the best out of a bad situation midway through the first half of Friday’s rout of Coppin State in Allen Fieldhouse.
The 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward — who missed a pair of layups on successive possessions in a span of 37 seconds — at least grabbed his own rebound and scored both times.
Did salvaging four points out of the flurry make him feel better?
“No,” the Philadelphia freshman said with a smile, “because I already know coach (Bill Self) is going to be on me. He wants me to make the shot, to put it in.”
He finished with six points off 2-of-7 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds while playing 18 minutes in the Jayhawks’ 85-53 victory over the Eagles.
“It’s still two points, but if I could make the first one I could have my teammates get an assist,” Morris said.
Morris, who has started three of KU’s five games, takes a 7.4 scoring, 7.0 rebounding average into today’s 8 p.m. home battle against (3-2) Kent State.
He has made 45.7 percent of his shots, his percentage not helped by bricking the two above-mentioned gimmies.
“I told coach I think it was something on the rim. Every time I put the ball in, it just came back out,” Morris said. “I don’t know what it was. Coach told me I need to finish that because in bigger games in the Big 12 Conference I won’t be able to get my own misses half the time. I need to start finishing a lot more and play a lot more about the rim than just trying to lay it up.”
Morris’ teammates have teased him about him padding his own rebound stats.
“We joke around with him a little bit, (but) it’s something that needs to be taken care of. Obviously he can’t miss those shots,” junior point guard Sherron Collins said. “Especially in a game like Texas we’ve got to have those baskets.”
Self sees both positives and negatives in what happened to Morris.
“You always are happy to get a basket,” KU’s sixth-year coach said. “Certainly he has to play bigger than what he’s played as far as finishing around the rim. He’s a good shooter, but he hasn’t finished as strong as what he can. None of our big guys have. You can make a case for Markieff (Morris) and Quintrell (Thomas) not finishing strong around the rim. They’ll get there. They are just young.”
Self has asked his Jayhawks (4-1) to be more aggressive.
“He talks to me about toughness and being meaner,” Marcus Morris said. “I think it’s something he needs us all to do. We are young, and we don’t know a lot about the game and other teams. Other teams are very tough. I think he wants us to be meaner at practice, going against each other.”
Marcus said he has learned a lot by going against sophomore big man Cole Aldrich every day.
“Cole is tough. He’s strong. He dunks a lot. He does what he does in practice in the game,” Marcus Morris said. “He’s a great person to try to follow. You’ll get tougher by following him.”
Marcus was asked if the solution inside offensively was simply to copy Cole and dunk everything in sight.
“I got to dunk a lot in high school,” Marcus said. “This is a totally different game, a new speed. Guys are a lot stronger. I’m used to dunking. Maybe I need to do it more in practice, so I get used to it a lot more.”

Following Cole's lead for finishing strong around the basket certainly isn't the answer. While he has played well so far, he has also missed a number of close shots so far this yar because he hasn't gone strong to the basket. After hearing that MM^2 were Philly-tough players, it is rather sad to have these comments about weak interior play. Maybe it will help to have Mario return and double the Chi-town toughness of the 'Hawks.Rock Chalk

Dude, they're freshman. There's not that many freshman that start at Div. I schools with consistant play being their forte. I have full confidence that the coaching staff will get it handled. They've identified the problem, and now they'll go about fixing it.

I have been a little disappiointed by Cole missing so many easy shots under the basket also but I have reminded myself that even though he is a sophomore, he really hasn't had much experience yet except for that great game against Hansborough last year. There is still plenty of time for him to come around. His blocked shots have made up for at least some of his missed shots. I am reserving my judgement until sometime in February. I agree getting Little ready to play will make them better on the boards.

Everyone's been missing layups, i said during the game that we've already missed more layups this year than all of last year. that may not be too far of a stretch.

Hey, Gary..."He has made 45.7 percent of his shots, his percentage not helped by bricking the two above-mentioned gimmies."Actually, when he made the two follow shots, he actually shot 50 percent on those 2 posessions (2-4). I would argue that actually HELPED his percentage! It was the 0-3 on the others that brought him down...

kuwells-Sorry to post something negative but two misses will lower your percentage no matter what. Think about going 2 for 2 and 0 for 3 (2/5- 40%) verses 2 for 4 and 0 for 3 (2/7-29%). I hope you were just being facetious on your post...

Just slightly. Blaming 45 percent shooting on 2 errant shots (that he rebounded and made) is a bit odd... Especially with a line of 2-7 (Although I get the point). Think Freshman...Facitous. Nice. I prefer sarcastic. Chyna? Are you that really ginormous female wrestler? Didn't know you were a hawk fan. Awesome. Perhaps silicon poisioning affect your mathmatical abilities.

Are these guys running out of stories seems like the same articles day in and day out. We all know about the rebounding and easy "bunnie" woes, lets try and think of something better to write about, like oh i dunno how about the game tonight. Hows Taylors ankle will he start tonight? What about Releford will he see mins tonight, whats the deal with Appleton? Never hear anything about him. Im pretty sure i dont give a crap about why Coppin St chooses such hard road games, and when there next home game is. How about someting on Kent St this is our first game against them. Cant wait for the sh!tty post game report. This site is now officialy LAME.

So wrong sport, but since this article isn't that interesting, why not change the topic -- vote for Reesing's Game changing pass on www.ESPN.com . Enter pontiac into the searchbar to vote. The Arkansas play is nearly as incredible as Reesing's, but I don't think it was 4th down, and certainly it wasn't snowing, nor thrown (and caught) by guys who could barely walk (or throw).

Percentages aside, these guys need to realize that at this level these little soft put ups will not work. At the high school level they could get away with it, but here there is just too much that can influence those shots. They need to finish with authority. It would also help to see these guys learn to go off the glass.

Um...Finishing IS the next step the bigs have to take.Cole, Marcus, Kieff and Quintrell SHOULD form the constellation dunkatron! If these guys are not slamming and jamming tonight against a short Kent State mid major team, its time to get out the testosterone injections and create some synthetic beasts!!Dunking in D1 is not a show-off activity, or a macho act. It is the only safe, effective way for a big to finish in the age of butchery unlimited. It is just coincidentally a macho act. But even if it were a girly man act, it would be what all bigs have to learn to do to go along with their jump hooks.I anticipate quite a glassgasm by the bigs tonight. I anticipate that they will be throwing it down every chance they get.Good!

its a bit fustrating watching the twins, Quintrill, and at times Cole just lay it in. That would never happen last year with DA, Darnell, and Sasha. I know, I know they are freshmen, and the others were NBA type talent. But c'mon, i mean a monstrous dunk could put them in some ESPN highlights or something. Nothing bad comes from a dunk... except if they get stuffed by the rim.
