After KU's thrilling 40-37 win over Missouri at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, the police chief of Columbia, Mo. issued a fake warrant for the team's arrest.

Say what you will about the city of Columbia, Mo., but at least it has a chief of police with a sense of humor.

Capt. Tom Dresner, interim police chief of the Columbia Police Department, put together a press release on Saturday announcing that he intended to issue warrants for the arrest of the entire Jayhawk football team for robbery following Saturday’s football victory over his Tigers.

The release, addressed to Lawrence Police Chief Ron Olin, said the department’s Major Crimes Unit is preparing to carry warrants to the county attorney.

“Your gang of desperadoes led by Todd Reesing and Kerry Meier will be behind bars soon enough,” the release said.

In a phone interview Monday, despite tough questions about the lack of evidence for the charges, Dresner held firm.

“It was a robbery in plain daylight,” he said, although he later admitted that perhaps the Tigers played some role in the defeat, blaming “our defense not covering a guy who’d gotten like a thousand receptions that day.”

Dresner said he’s not confident the charges will hold up before a jury because, among other things, there’s a lack of jail space to accommodate the entire KU team.

Lawrence Mayor Mike Dever responded to the charges, noting he didn’t see much evidence after having watched the last 10 minutes of the game about 30 times over the weekend.

“I think there needs to be a warrant against the entire MU football team for impersonating a top 10 team,” Dever said.

Dresner said he came up with the idea of submitting the release after watching the football game Saturday.

“It’s fun to do, and in our business, we don’t get to laugh enough,” he said.

Perhaps Chief Dresner needs to issue a warrant for Coach Pinkel for stealing $2.3 million/year from Mizzou. :o)

Just focus on MU's basketball players and Columbia will be safe enough.

Well, at least the guy's got a sense of humor.

But what's telling is how they want to say we "stole" the game when KU clearly outplayed MU basically the whole day. If they would have come back, that would have been theft.

But they didn't. And Mike Dever clearly got the last laugh in the joke.

No, wait, on second though that would be our boys in blue with the last laugh. Injured and completely counted out, yet they out-man and out-play the slave-traders.

Man, it's good to be a Jayhawk.

Rock Chalk.

I agree... I thought maybe he was going to say he reported our team to the SRS because we spanked his boys!

Anyway... I like him, it's good to laugh

Fun story. Fun game. Glad to see both sides are getting a good laugh out of it, even though Kansas got the last laugh.

Great game overall, and for the second year both teams have delivered an exciting game for a national TV audience. That bodes well for building more national respect for a rivalry that I prefer far more than the Duke-North Carolina-ESPN lovefest.

Interesting comment from "the Chief"......I doubt seriously if anyone in Columbia found it one bit funny. There is genuine outrage that KU had the nerve to even make it a game, much less us beat them.

I am shocked at the depth of outright disdain for all things Kansas in Columbia. If my history is correct wasn't it Missourians that burned the town and murdered the citizens of Lawrence? Wasn't it Norm Stewart who taught his Missouri teams every cheap shot trick in the book when playing Kansas i.e. Jason Sutherland?? Wasn't it Missouri fans who taunted and abused the KU fans after the game last year even after winning?

Heck, when I was in school, one year in Columbia, the KU band was pummeled with oranges throughout the ENTIRE game. Nice sportsmanship, Mizzou!!

My advice to anyone going through Columbia, if you have anything indicating your a Jayhawk, take it off, hide it or cover it!! The chief's comments are clever but don't you dare go one mile over the speed limit. I speak from personal experience.

Fortunately, at least one person in Columbia has some grasp of reality and a sense of humor. Even more fortunately, Lawrence has a mayor with a quality response.

I wonder where he was when those Jayhawk fans were arrested a couple years back at the Mizzou basketball arena for their sign.
